5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference on asanas
One of the most complete books on asanas. And B. K. S. Iyengar don't just show you the picture. He goes on with explanations, benefits, variations, sequences, etc. If you are a serious practioner of asanas, this is the best and most complete reference. It goes well beyond what your asana hatha yoga teacher can do. For me, I find it a good reading to expand my knowledge on asanas, especially when I want to find something new to challenge my body. there is always something in this book that I cannot do yet, may be forever! This book is not intented to be a textbook on yoga, though. If you are beginner and don't intent to challenge your body too much, then this book may not be what you want. Try taking classes, and have a books such as " Yoga: The Iyengar Way" by Silva Mehta instead.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly The BOOK
This is the book for anyone who takes asanas seriously. There are so many variations and each asana properly explained. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Hatha Yoga
I have been priviledged to have a copy of this book since it was first published.Being a student of yoga, I was always watching for new books on Yoga. My teacher of the time had taken me as far as she knew to do.When I met BKS Iyengar through his book, my work started again.I thought I knew a lot, but this book showed me how much I didn't know about the practice of asana, bandhas and pranayama.(postures, lock and breathwork) I was overwhelmed with the amazing amount of instruction written and discovered quickly that by using these instructions, I could take my own body further than ever before. At that time, I was quite flexible and I thought, also strong. Light on Yoga is a book that allows one to move beyond any limited thinking and limitation in a healthy body and has an amazing therapeutic section for those that suffer dis-ease and limitations. This is truly the "bible" for the asana work and is considered that by many teachers and in all traditions. The details given when followed precisely will take you beyond yourself into the most subtle and deepest levels one can experience. The first 63 pages are a translation of the Yoga Sutra's. This is a book for those that have a teacher and regular class as well as the book for those that prefer to be self-taught.You won't find a better book anywhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Yoga
This set is a decent introduction to yoga for someone who knows nothing about yoga and has never been involved in any kind of esoteric practice.I don't know why is it entitled "The Lost Teachings of Yoga", since the information presented on these CDs is widely available elsewhere. Most of the information presented here comes from Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. There are also references to Babaji and Trailanga Swami from Autobiography of a Yogi, Gopi Krishna's Kundalini experience, transcendental meditation, and works related to tantra, mantras and hatha yoga.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of yoga history and philosophy
I have looked for a long time for something that taught yoga philosophy in an engaging, comprehensive manner. Some books are a bit on the dry side, others just touch on one small aspect of it.This CD set is a wonderful overview of the classical philosophies of yoga. The author's voice is clear, soothing and pleasant.Best of all, he's interesting!I haven't found a more complete and well-organized source of yoga philosophy.Definitely a worthwhile purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Work
Absolute bliss! This is a magnificient work of synthetesis of the complex and fascinating world of Yoga; history, traditions, techniques are presented with knowledge , expertise and a suave voice (well its a recording). I have been listening to the whole thing 3 times now and there is still much to learn. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
This is one of the first yoga books I purchased. It covers a number of poses that really are not just for the beginner. But the book is comprehensive and will provide a great foundation for a home yoga practice as well as a great reference book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to the Iyengar method
How to Use Yoga is the quintessential book for beginning yoga students. 5-0 out of 5 stars 1st-class guide for energetic Qigong students
Having entered popular Western consciousness, the subject of Qigong is currently awash with fluffy, vacuous verbiage from pompous self-styled experts whose only real interest is cashing in on a lucrative New-Age trend. This volume, although dense and difficult, reveals much authentic and vital knowledge to those who have had some experience of Qi and are not afraid of patient study and experiment. Dr. Yang is one of a handful of authors in this field who is both qualified and willing to share significant teachings that have heretofore been kept secret or deliberately obscure. His material is presented in a format that, while extremely concise, assiduously avoids being cryptic. If you are a lazy dabbler interested in yet another mealy-mouthed, feel-good text weighted down with pseudo-exotica, promising everything and delivering nothing, avoid this book. But if you have perceived a little of the reality of internal Qi and desire to systematically expand your practice and understanding, you will probably find this volume unusually rewarding.

3-0 out of 5 stars theory not practice
I am disappointed with newest Jwing-Ming book. There is a lot of scientific and theoretical reflections about all stages of Qigong, unfortunately practical ground is covered only at the beginner level.
5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure
A very important book, especially for Qigong teachers. I doubt there is anyone at any level of practice who will not find something eye-opening and new in this book. Along with this one , his other two books, "Root of Chinese Qigong" and "Secret of Youth", belong on the shelves, no, in the hands of every practitioner who takes his/her Qigong even remotely seriously. I'm looking forward to his forthcoming Qigong books.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YogaNap Works!
I love this book!A friend recommended it to me, because of mystressful schedule, and it has helped me so much.I started incorporating a couple of Kristen's exercises in my day and the tension in my neck is starting to go away.It is amazing how I feel immediate benefits when I stop running around for ONE minute and simply bend over and breathe.I do yoga on a regular basis, but these exercises have helped me to blend more peace and relaxation into my work day.I find myself doing half dog on my desk, twisting when I get in my car, and taking slow beautiful breaths in traffic. These fun and simple exercises really help me go through my day with more awareness and joy.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Easy As Pie...
I've come to the realization that with age and work comes stress...mind-numbing, balled-up-muscles, backaches, headaches...stress. Desperate to find relief in any fashion I came across "YogaNap." The author, Kirsten Rentz, has done a great job at explaining positions in true "Yoga for Idiots" fashion (aka: simply). The illustrations (softly done in blues, and greens) go one step further in making the whole process as easy as pie (mmmmm, pie). Anyway, the poses are a perfect way to end a long (mind-numbing, balled-up-muscles, backaches, headaches) stressful kind of day. Thanks Kirsten!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy yoga rest
The perfect gift for the busy professional who needs to slow down, the stressed-out student, and every person who has avoided yoga due to fear of hot rooms and sore muscles, YogaNap is a fun and unintimidating introduction to the oft-ignored practice of restorative yoga.

Editorial Review

Despite skeptical jibes from his well-meaning friends, Stephen Cope set off for a four-month yoga retreat in rural Massachusetts. Ten years later, he is still there. A psychotherapist left in the lurch after a long-term relationship, Cope was experiencing the same deep questioning of life that he had witnessed so often in his practice. His self-prescribed antidote was to pursue a life of contemplation and inner discovery that he had felt drawn to for some time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top 5 books I've ever read.
I rank Cope's work right up there with Prisoners of Childhood by Alice Miller. This book shed light on some of my own experience andgave voice to spiritual yearnings of my own. This is a yoga of transformation. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Accessible
I so enjoyed reading this book. I very much felt that this book is written for real people who are skeptical/curious about yoga philosophy.Cope takes you through step by step how and why yoga works using real language not hippie/bliss out language seen in other yoga books. Also, for someone who is familiar with psychotherapy and wanting to add a spiritual dimension to their self-care this book is invaluable in merging the two lines of thinking. This book was very influential to me - I plan to refer to it much as I continue to develop my yoga practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Deep and Practical.A Life Changing Book !

5-0 out of 5 stars Another good one from Bryan!
As far as home yoga workouts go, this is a great one. It is a great workout, but keeps with the spirit of yoga. I am a Bryan Kest fan - so this was another addition of his to my collection. He has a great, no pressure style, and it great about reminding us to breath...something that can disappear fast during some of the more challeging sections.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, only one complaint:
This a a great CD and booklet to have in your collection if you are an intermediate to advanced student.I really like to use it together with my practice at the studio.I quite like Bryan Kest's style of teaching because he is honest about what you have to do to achieve the routine. He's very motivating for me, despite what others have said in their reviews.I wish he'd come out with more of these sets, and I'd probably buy them all if they were at this advanced level.Bryan Kest does not have a typically soothing, meditative voice, yet he brings home the meaning behind the asana: keep the focus on your breath, even during the tough poses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great class if you can work out at home!
I am a stay at home mom that does not always have the time to make it to my yoga class. I have all of Bryan Kest's DVD's and wanted a longer class...this is it! It makes me feel as if I am in class not having to watch a DVD. Kest has a unique style very different from other yoga instructors, this style is one I embrace. New places are cooking and I look forward to using this everyday. If you are ready for the next level, I highly recommend this CD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Cultivation
Very good!I have been doing meditation for several years. This book has helped me add practical cultivation to my meditation. The book is more about energetic cultivation than meditation. It is good for meditation though.I would recomend that you first read Mantek Chia's "Awaken the Healing Power of the Tao" first. Then go for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Reference
This book is not for the beginner but is very useful for someone that already has some experience and wishes to compare and check what they already know. The information is clear but the order is not and certainly could be reedited. Da Liu refers to this book often in his books and they are helpful with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Taoist Treasury!
The 'yoga' teaching in this book never was easily accessible - nor ever meant to be. It is the highest rung on the Taoist ladder, and often, its practitioners lived on remote mountain peaks - disinterested in the 'numbers game' or winning converts. To find a Taoist master - of Chao Pi Chen's calibre would have taken years, many hardships. Loathe to set their teachings down in words, texts such as this are therefore precious. Even for a native Chinese, the idioms in this text are incomprehensible, minus access to the inner tradition. Luckily, Lu K'uan Yu knew the real (practical) meaning of these idioms - and therefore translates not just a text, but the practical nuance. This text opens up a remarkable world - one the West has yet to tap into,as regards our knowledge of the paraphysical energies underpinning the life of bodies and cells, vital centres etc. Before the Communist revolution, elderly people practicing this yoga, found their greying hair turning black again. This is not immortality 'Hollywood style,' but a by-product of the Yoga. When I took this practice seriously - in a retreat, I could actually hear little 'electronic' bleeps - as the 'microcosmic circuit' became energised. It happens naturally - you can't force it to happen. This Taoist yoga makes sense of the saying 'the kingdom of heaven is within you.' It is! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Book for the Yoga Sutras
I've read the Yoga Sutras of Patajali by Sri Swami Satchidananda and found that book to be a much more detailed description of sutras. This book is very brief, which may a good introduction but I've found it to be much less useful. If you are looking for a deep understanding of the sutras, I'd recommend a book with more content.

This is an enlightening translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eastern Wisdom
Great translation of the timeless and pricelss wisdom of the Yoga Sutra.Yoga seems to be very popular in the physical senses of society today, however the Yoga Sutras speak of the holism of yoga and not just the posture and breathing that yoga is thought of in the popular circles.Great book and application of it will allow you to find peace and tranquility by detaching from the chaotic mind(ego). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Boring CD
When I found this book & CD on Amazon I was excited because I attend yoga classes at my gym, but I was really seeking to have some "quiet time" with God in the process of all that wonderful stretching.I read through the book & was excited to put in the cd.When I did, I was dissapointed.I was expecting nice music or the narrator reading some of the scripture mentioned in the book, etc.Instead there was NO music, No scripture, and not an adequate amount of time to let you get a complete stretch or concentrate on something other than moving your arm to the next position.Bottom line, if you're looking for a good audio yoga CD that focuses on God & streching with some nice relaxing music - this is not for you. BUT if all you are looking for is a Christian yoga book with very basic stretches & a couple of scripture references - this book/CD is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to yoga, Christian or otherwise
Why learn yoga from an Episcopal priest?Rev. Roth may not be Hindu guru, but she manages to explain 25 Hatha Yoga postures (asanas), helped with clear line drawings by Susan John Mangam, in a way that even complete beginners will understand.Plus, as a lapsed Episcopalian, I was amused by the idea of learning yoga from an Episcopal priest.Rev. Roth offers many ideas about incorporating God and worship into the postures, which may be helpful to practicing Christians. As a practicing Scientologist, however, I am waiting for the day that someone writes a Scientologist yoga book incorporating the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard. As our great founder and leader taught us, we can only reach enlightenment through auditing, so I don't know how to reconcile the truth of Scientology with the practices of yoga, although in "The Hymn of Asia", L. Ron Hubbard did imply he was the Maitreya, or future Buddha, so I'm sure a reconciliation is possible.I certainly hope so, because I have benefited enormously from yoga, almost as much as I have benefited from Scientology.Only 10 more Intensives and $53,200 to go to Clear!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers
My two year old loves this book and quickly learned all the poses. The book has a few basic poses which are renamed for the animal they mimic. For example, "standing forward bend" is renamed "monkey" because the pose resembles a monkey bending over. The illustrations and text are simple and the back of the book has photos of actual children doing the poses along with some parental tips. It's a great book and I highly recommend it. It's also a great gift idea for a young child whose mom practices yoga.

5-0 out of 5 stars important information
A Woman's Best Medicine is one of the most uplifting and important books I have ever read.I read it some years ago and have just reviewed it which prompted me to buy several more copies to hand out on loan, to women I care about. It's easy to read, easy to follow and I wish all women had a copy! I have already begun to benefit healthwise, both in a physical sense and in an emotional one, from implementing some of the deeply wise but essentially simple advice. Bless the author. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
I was dissappointed in the book, I already know some basic Yoga and was looking for something geared specifically towards the golfer. Instead the book took regular yoga poses, which you learn in any basic yoga class, and applied them to golf.5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have!
If you're a golfer, you got to have this!5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for new mothers and yogis
This books is a great complement to the yoga pregnancy books. Once you have had your baby you can get back to your practice or start a new yoga practice. The book presents 4 classes for different stages of the baby's growth or mother's ability to move. In general, it is also a good introduction to yoga with basic introductory chapters. I am an expectant mother and yoga teacher trainee. I am planning on using this material as soon as I get certified and start teaching my prenatal and postnatal classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for mom
I loved this book for postpartum yoga - it has a special section for cesarean moms, which was the reason I bought it.It has series of gradually increasing challenge, which I also like. However, I found it WAY too hard to incorporate my baby at first.Having a c section, it was hard enough to get in and out of the poses. Also, my newbron needs lots of attention and its hard to relax and focus on myself.Maybe this will change with time. Also, in terms of the baby interactions segments of each series, Baby Om was a little demanding of its babies - these sections included a full body massage and several exercise movements all in one sequence, and encouraged the mom to "keep trying" when baby resisted - my baby did not like this.I prefer Itsy Bitsy Yoga for baby yoga, as it gives very useful tips (such as going slow, stopping if baby is unhappy, etc) and offers different poses based on small developmental steps.A great book for moms, especially c section moms, but not the best for baby in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete
I found this book to be very complete, with details on body positioning/benefits/etc. for each pose/exercise for you and your baby as well as many variations to make it work for you and your baby. They also included some information on baby massage and a special workout for c-section recovery. Its worth reading a few times before you dive into a workout to choose what you want to do and how you want to do it, rather than read while doing the workout and getting bogged down in all the options. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The one book to have on Kundalini
For those experiencing or interested in the process of Kundalini awakening, this is the one book to have. Dr. Greenwell writes clearly and intelligently about the broad range of experiences that can occur when this powerful energy awakens, includingcase histories of a variety of gurus, saints, and everyday people, and about the yogic view of energy and the chakras. She offers useful advice on how to handle the intense psychic and physical phenomena that is a frequent by-product of active Kundalini energy, reassurance that spiritual awakening indeed exists and you aren't crazy, and the importance of allowing the awakening to unfold once it has begun. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but misses the mark
This book is an important addition to the literature on Kundalini mysteries and is admirable (but not exhaustive) in its research of the literature itself. However, I feel that, in drawing conclusions from thedivergent information gleaned without a seeming ability to satisfactorilydistinguish esoteric metaphor from Indoasian philosophy and pseudosciencefrom Western science and pseudoscience, the author contributes to morepseudoscience on the subject. In Chapter 5, the author presentsbiographical sketches of historic personages, many of whom exemplify theextremes of the Kundalini process. Interestingly, in noting Sri Yogananda, she reports, almost dejectedly, that devotees of his path in whom Kundaliniprocesses are awakened generally do not experience adverse effects. Withoutdelving into why this is so and exploring other Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist,Sikh, and Yogic lineages that present methods for gradual catharsis ofconsciousness and neurology (which is what the Kundalini processessentially is), she misses the real mystery of Kundalini, the"why" of how things go awry, and the key to helping individualswho experience untoward effects. I feel that the author presents bits ofinformation but not essential understanding or definition of the Kundaliniprocess. It would have been better if this book was simply astraightforward compilation of anecdotes from the literature with some casestudies and clinical psychological profiles thrown in rather than a pieceoffering so much commentary and conjecture.

5-0 out of 5 stars tremendous resource
This is the one book to have, that explains the kundalini awakening. This is an absoulte must have book, for all those who practice yoga or meditation. It shows in detail how kundalini awakens and the symptoms thatoften come with it such as sweating, shaking, visions, changes in breathingand heart beat patterns and so forth. Many people who meditate long enoughhave experienced these and other symptoms and dont know what is going on. What is going on is that they have awakened kundalini and that this energyis working to clear out negative energy and transforming them to a higherand better state of being. The results of meditation can be terrifying ifone is not informed of what is going on. This book does a superb job inexplaining what is happening. Simply a great book. ... Read more
