5-0 out of 5 stars Everything It's Cracked Up To Be
I came to practice Bikram's Yoga after a studio moved into my neighborhood and my curiosity got the best of me.It's absolutely all it promises to be, and my enthusiam for the yoga spills over to the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great yoga, book is a littledifferent from the class
Love Bikram yoga, so glad I was introduced to it.I attend class at a local studio and wanted the book for times when I do the yoga on my own and to check out some of the instructions for the postures.I find the book very helpful - and note that in some regards it differs from the class. So, it is good to have an instructor, who has been to Bikram's latest instruction, to supplement the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PERFECT companion to your Bikram Yoga Practice. . .
I've been practicing Bikram Yoga since December 28, 2005.In total, I've lost 10 pounds and a TON of inches.I've gone from a size 16 to a size 14.My skin has the "Bikram Glow" AND I feel absolutely amazing. The physical benefits of this practice are obvious what most people don't realize is that your mind/Spirit will get a challenge as well.I am more loving to myself and stronger at heart. This Yoga is TRULY a whole body experience. You will come out of each class feeling a little better than the last. It's a healing process and each day I feel grateful to finish a class.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old LOVES this
This book is great! I like to do a lot of fun things with my kids and this book helps me to "instruct" the under 3 crowd in my house. The kids love it and everyone laughs when we do it! A definite must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Breezy Fun Yoga Book
Out of three Children Yoga books I bought off of Amazon, this was far the best! it gave me a lot of ideas to work with and was able to build up a lot of lessons to teach the children.Children love the chanting meditaions and acting like the animals in the jungle story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas to incorporate into children's yoga practice
This was my first children's yoga purchase which I still use today when teaching young ones. This book gives many different stories to tell as you are teaching children to move their bodies and breath within the poses. A great tool for educators and parents of children preschool through elementary age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The classical Hatha Yoga Manual with Sanskrit & English
This is a unique translation of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Sometime in the 15th Century, Yogi Svatmarama put down his principals of the practice of Yoga. Many of these include the mysteries of Kundalini --the coiled center of energy close to the base of the spine. But there is a lot more here for the student of yoga, including photos of the various "asanas" or positions, health, diet and mental hygiene. If you read Sanskrit, this would be a treasure. If you don't, you still have a line-by-line translation of this ancient and honored work. It's like listening to the yogi himself as he lectures his disciples. Fascinating reading--and if you are a practicing yogi or yogini, you'll find this insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Closest thing to a "source code" that we have
The two best known English translations of Svatmarama's classical text on yoga from the Fifteenth Century are by Pancham Singh and Elsy Becherer. The former is 87 years old and the latter is a translation (with commentary by Hans-Ulrich Rieker) from the German, and is therefore twice removed from the original Sanskrit. Both books are out of print.Surprisingly there is virtually nothing else in English despite the fact that the hatha yoga teachings found in popular works, including B.K.S. Iyengar's celebrated Light on Yoga, are in no small part based on Svatmarama's text.5-0 out of 5 stars Features the original Sanskrit side-by-side with English
Ably translated into English by Brian Dana Akers, The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is the classic sourcebook on Hatha Yoga, written by an East Indian yoga master named Svatmarama in the fifteenth century C.E. to preserve for future generations his own experience and the wisdom of older works now lost. This faithful reproduction of the crucial text features the original Sanskrit side-by-side with the exacting English translation. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika reads as a selection of individual phrases describing the hatha yoga poses and giving insight into the spiritual nature of yoga. Black-and-white photographs illustrate several of the poses. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is an impressive and highly recommended reference for students and devoted practitioners of Hatha Yoga. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Think on these...
What an amazing reflection on the sturas!Bouanchaud does an exceptional job breaking down the sutras into managable chunks, with leading questions to help you personalize and internalize the ancient text.Giving the sanskrit words and pronunciation along side the english is also helpful. The "table of contents" listing of each sutra at the beginning of the book is a wonderful way to find the sutra you seek, though they are all such phenominal concepts to think on.The questions for each sutra are wonderful to start a yoga class, a conversation, or just a way to start your thought process rolling.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, it will change the way you see things!

5-0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to studying w/ an exceptional teacher
I have actively studied this book for over 2 years. It is the next best thing to studying with a learned scholar & practitioner. While studying w/ two such teachers, I have used several translations.Whilethey all have their merits, none are as good as this for conveying anunderstanding of the work as a whole and it's relevance to perennial humanconcerns. The literal translation of each sutra is the least vauable partof the book and here I can see room for some debate on a few individualsutras.More valuable, however, is the commentary and discussion.Herethe book excels, like a good teacher.I found the occasional scholarlytangential discussion of Samkhya and Ayurveda quite useful and relevant tobetter understand the overall content. If I had to recommend just onesutra book, this would be it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent book on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
I ordered this book from Amazon and was amazed by the structure and content of this presentation. The only factor that may distract the careful reader is that it is a translation from French and by no means it isperfect. Some misspelling remained and there are some sentences that leavethe reader clueless (not necessarily because of the cosmic infotransmitted). The original work must be a decent piece, it is a pity thatits translation is less accurate.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So much depth in only 91 pages!
Richard Miller has masterfully packed this small yet rewarding book with lead after lead to self-realization. The book not only contains a careful stage-by-stage walk through of Yoga Nidra but also includes personal stories of experiences from his students that help illuminate the simple and precious beauty of self exploration contained within the practice. Miller's use of analogies and vivid, colorful, concise language weaves a connection between psychology and Eastern spiritual philosophy that creates a supurb introduction to Yoga Nidra. This book is crammed with depth and I recommend it for beginning and advanced practitioners alike! No matter what form of yoga or meditation you practice, this book will compliment your development as few other introduction books do. Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok Introduction, Self Aggrandizing Author's Blurb
This little book with a cd is an ok introduction to yoga nidra. The guy who wrote it was a follower of advaita vedanta teacher jean klein and he uses a lot of jean klein's language, like "global listening" for a kind of mindfulness etc. This book does a nice job of explaining some of the theory behind yoga nidra, combining opposites, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on meditation
With this gem of a book, Richard Miller beautifully unfolds the principles of Yoga Nidra in a fresh and accessible way. An ancient practice of meditation, Yoga Nidra leads one into an expansive self-awareness, and a meaningful connection with transcendent being. With the accompanying CD, Richard masterfully leads the listener deeper into a meditative experience of welcoming all that is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary for anyone practicing Ashtanga yoga
This book is a must for any Ashtanga practicioner. The beginning of the book describes the philosophy. The rest shows pictures of Jois and grandson Sharath in the poses as well as detailed explainations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Yoga Mala is written by a living legend with many years of practice and teaching experience.I would recommend this book only to those already familiar with Ashtanga, as parts of it will make no sense unless you are.Indispensable knowledge is interspersed with lovely throwbacks to earlier days in India, eg. the part where it is suggested a nice flat floor smeared with cow dung is essential to any good practice space.Gotta love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Ashtanga Book
I have a personal library of about 50 yoga books. This one is not one of my top ten, but it is a soild book. It's like the "Light on Yoga" of the Ashtanga world.

5-0 out of 5 stars My FAVORITE illustrated book on yoga
This is definitely one of my favorite books on yoga. I am a Sivananda style practicioner and teacher. This is my favorite of the thorough books on yoga, though I would recommend Yoga Mind and Body for a less experienced yoga student. The illustrations are beautiful in this book and the teachings are easy to understand. It is a very complete (though how could anything TRULY be "complete") book about the spiritual practice of yoga.

4-0 out of 5 stars Water World
I first heard of the late Jacques Mayol from the now classic cult movie "The Big Blue". Judging by this encyclopedic work, the real Jacques Mayol was a more interesting character than his celluloid image. "Homo Delphinus"is clearly a work of love and a beautiful book. It is published in a large glossy format with stunning photos. It is difficult to classify the book as it is a combination of science, semi-science, ecology, philosophy and mysticism. Mr. Mayol is successful in producing a touching work that summarizes his life long romance with the aquatic world and his hopes and visions for the future.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I am a great admirer of Mr. Mayol. Since a child I felt always impressed about his contributions to science and conservationism. However, I just felt so disappointed when I read Homo Delphinus. Through it, he tries to cover many topics, but in such a superficial way that it made me anxious for not getting into any point at all. And his theory about the "homo delphinus" is only a collection of cliches and general thoughts.5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST
Being a diver and a fan of the sea, having met Jacques Mayol the guru of breath-hold dives in Oct 2001 in Elba and upon learning that this famous book was now available in English, the next day I procured one from this site.Having since learnt of Jacques's passing on the 22nd of Dec 2001 I feel that anyone who dives or simply loves the sea and its creatures should get hold of this very remarkable book - before it goes out of production.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point
I found this book very helpful in my efforts to become a yogi. The spiral binding makes it easy to references as you practice your poses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy to follow instructions.
I looked at several books before purchasingthis one.I was immediately impressed with the spiral binding which allows the book to be open next to you while you are learning the pose. The pictures are large and show multiple steps to reaching the pose.I also liked the "Take Care" instructions.I highly recommend this introduction to Yoga.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear Design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Beginners
I was introduced to Sivananda Yoga in May 06 by my Shiatsu masseuse.I had several sessions of Shiatsu for back pain relief. However, a few days after the session the pain returned. My masseuse told me that if I practiced Sivananda Yoga once a day it would significantly reduce my back pain. She covered the basic asanas with me in two sessions.I ordered "The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." and "Yoga 101 Essential Tips".I began performing the asanas on my own using both books as my guide. They are easy to read and fully explain the asanas.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, complete, but approach with caution
This edition is a re-release of the 1983 edition. The only change I could clearly identify was the lay-out/design of the cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars great buy
To my mind Sivananda is the perfect type of yoga-- just the right mix of spirituality, workout, stretching and relaxation all in one.I always feel fantastic afterwards! So when I moved and couldn't find a class in my area, I really missed it.Tried Ashtanga--too many pushups!Iyengar...so much time on alignment and never broke a sweat!Gym yoga class...how do they even call this yoga?So I got this book, and it basically took me right back to the classes I used to take at the Sivananda center on 24th St., minus the chanting and a few of the variations.I use it all the time. The poses are explained well, especially if you have practiced them in a class before, with lots of diagrams and pictures and they include plenty of variations. The quick reference chart is great to remind you what order things go in or if you just want a quick half-hour session. Also good advice on diet and meditation and yoga in general.Definitely worth it for me...it's one exercise book I actually use! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Fab alternative stretch workout... except for all the yakking
The principle behind this yoga practice is similar to that of Yin yoga, where you hold poses for five minutes or more to stretch the connective tissue binding your organs and muscles. Connective tissue does not respond to bouncing stretches - only by holding a pose for five minutes or more will you be able to stretch it and get the chi to flow.
3-0 out of 5 stars UNsoothing boot camp talk for GREAT workout
This is a very challenging and GOOD yoga session. However, the tone he sets is that you're in bootcamp, and to "tough it out", rather than, "release and breathe" - the POINT of doing these to begin with.He also grunts and groans in this CD - uh, kinda weird.I have Kest's other Power Yoga videos that I LOVE, among several others that I use, but I did not like this CD.Of course "Power" Ashtanga style yoga is meant to be vigorous and challenging, but yoga should ALWAYS be SOOTHING to the mind, which this CD is not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing Session
I received this cd yesterday and started my day with it today. It was most engrossing and immediately created positive change in my body. The time went by quickly and it was hard to believe two hours had gone by. I will definitely improve with repeated use, but even 'out of the box' this session helped unkink many knots and much tension. By the penultimate asana, I was deep in another world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Truth
This is the epitome and crux of Hindu philosphy. A must read for a person looking for ultimate truth and liberation. After knowing the truth presented in this book, there remains nothing to be read further. The author has done a super job of putting this great ancient work together.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest of Indian Scriptures
Among the great scriptures of Indian spiritual thought, Yoga Vasistha is the the most beloved of mine. It is not a dry, wise and scholarly representation of Upanishadic thinking. It is a witty, surrealistic, out-of-mind story-telling to break the grip of one's logic-dominated mind. How to grasp with human mind what essentially is beyond it? Read it and either you will jump with joy or you will not understand anything beyond the stories. Are you ready? Or are you asleep with your eyes wide open?
5-0 out of 5 stars Truth revealed through stories
This book is a dialogue between Sage Vasistha and Rama. Vasistha reveals the "Truth" to rama by narrating a series of stories. The book is divided into six major parts, each part consisting of several short stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to kundalini yoga
I was very satisfied with this book.I own a lot of different introductory books about hatha yoga, and this is definitely one of the best.in addition to the exercies, it contains excellent explanations of the underlying concepts and fondational techniques,it doesn't just contain a bunch of poses or a few sets, but gives you a wide variety of exercise sets and meditations a long with descriptions of the benefits and purpose of each one.the book provides a great deal of flexibility and room for experimentation, which is extremely rare in a "beginner's text."the photographs and instructions are clear and of high quality, and the book provides a good introduction to the practices and lifetsyle of Yogi Bhajan's devotees.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on kundalini yoga that I have come across.
I am responding to a review by chiara adina cerweny "chiaradina" (wellington, NZ), who has posted the exact same review for three different books on kundalini yoga. Obviously, this individual has a personal problem with kundalini yoga, calling it a cult and a money producing machine. I have practiced kundalini yoga for eleven years and as far as I can tell, it is not a cult. My yoga instructor has never encouraged me to join anything or buy anything. For me it is an enjoyable way to exercise, unwind, and rejuvenate.
3-0 out of 5 stars know about 3HO, Rick Ross and Guru Bhajan
First, the book is nicley written and the exercises may or may not work. i noticed a rise in energy and old patterns coming up, might or might not be outcome of directed intent ... ( i do a lot of systems, from asthanga, hartha to martial arts and pilates) I immersed myself in kundalini yoga before i found out about who yogi bhajan, the founder of the system, truly is (a former taxi driver who feld from India and claims to have recieved these exercises from spirit after spending time in a cave. he founded kundalini yoga AFTER he couldn't make money in NY as a cab driver and arrived in LA, thrilled by the "mayan riches" of the upper - class society there. traditional sikh say what he does has nothing to do with their system and really put the emphasis on that he is a cheat. search the internet for information, especially sites from the rick ross institute http://www.rickross.com/reference/3ho/3hovisitor.html

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
5-0 out of 5 stars This is excellent.I would LOVE a disc accompaniment
I've done Bikram yoga for two years and am trying to broaden my experience. This book is one of the best I've found. It includes several complete, balanced sequences to do at home, which is a concern of mine since many dvds don't deliver a balanced workout and many books don't help a novice construct one.I am 48 and it addresses physical issues of mine with knowledge and compassion -- and I'm buying my 16-year-old daughter a copy, for the same reason. She will have to share it with me.

This is indeed a major book. The Yoga Tradition is alive and adapting to universal audience and modern science. In this very complete and generous book, the author present the Yoga science in a very well organised manner. If the book is not for the debutant it is absolutly accessible to the motivated reader and you should find it very stimulating and ..surprising! For me this book will be a companion and I know I will go back to it many times and with pleasure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I was suprised to find that there are postures not included in this book. The photographs are clear enough. There is no instruction. I suppose as an adjunct to some other material it is of great value. The one concern I have is about the durablility of the book itself. Since it is rather thick with a lot of pages, it might be worthwhile to purchase the hardcover edition instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Asanas collects 608 of black-and-white photographs, each accompanied by the English name of the pose and the Sanskrit characters, brief commentary, and specific combinations for Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and Iyengar practice. There are suggestions for beginning, intermediate, and advanced yoga practitioners, as well as a list of poses beneficial for particular health problems and chakra relationships. Because it builds on basic postures, Asanas will appeal to students of any of the 100 yoga styles. This would make a wonderful gift for anyone who is interested in yoga.

2-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere
I contemplated purchasing this online, but decided to take a look at it in a bookstore.I'm glad I did.If you're interested in learning yoga poses, look elsewhere.Even if you're after a book that captures the beauty and art of yoga, look elsewhere. The photos looked grainy and the book is so short and fat that it won't lie flat.Keep shopping. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars this book is a gift
Third century Hermetic writings encouraged followers to "grow as vast as that immeasurable vastness" and wrote"...find your home in the heart of every living creature, make yourself higher than all heights and lower than all depths; bring all opposites inside yourself and reconcile them; understand that you are everywhere..."This is what was missing from my yoga practice.Even with great devotion and a daily asana, pranayama and meditation practice I wasn't close.Mark Whitwell's book changed that.In "Yoga of Heart" he generously, sincerely and lovingly opens his heart and mind and shares what he has learned practicing and studying with masters. You will learn to breathe and move your body to your breath. He teaches you how to take the grace and beauty and healing of yoga off the mat and into life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the other reviews! Save your money!!
Notice how ALL of the 5 star reviews are by people who have only reviewed products by the author. It is probably the author himself trying to pump up sales.
5-0 out of 5 stars Surrender to wholeness
Too often we feel pulled apart, fragmented, dis-intergrated by the admirable goals we have set, the competing roles we fill, the tensions of our every day lives. To ease the pain of this fragmentation many have embarked on a journey or spiritual path only to find that this seeking fails to provide the comfort they desire. In "Yoga of Heart," Mark Whitwell offers a simple solution to this quest for wholeness: Stop struggling, do your yoga, and be receptive to the strength and wisdom that rests, too often hidden, in each of our hearts. In this exploration of the ancient origins of yoga and contemporary practices, Mr. Whitwell demonstrates a remarkably nuanced understanding of the challenges of modern life and relationships, and a sophisticated interpretation of the wisdom cultures that gave rise to yoga. He knits these valuable lessons together and offers a simple practice designed to open your heart to the miracle of your daily life. I have found these lessons and a gentle daily yoga practice to be life altering and now offer them to patients and students when I see them struggle with the sense ofemptiness that comes from fragmentation.
