5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, understandable, practical, & profound
This is a beautifully written practice manual for Bn Dzogchen (~Buddhist Nyingma or old school) dream & sleep yogas based on the Mother Tantra. The author confirms most Western psychological views of dreams but, though some object, states that lucid dreaming (in which the dreamer is conscious & in control) is of great spiritual as well as psychological value. He states, despite some Buddhist authors, p. 12: "how greatly dream is valued in Tibetan culture & in the Bn religion, & how information from the unconscious is often of greater value than the information the conscious mind can provide."He provides a sensitive, balanced, non-extremist perspective-pp. 25-6: "Cultural ignorance is developed & preserved in traditions...If we are not careful, the teachings can be made to support our ignorance" & p. 94: "It can be healthy to give up worldly life & become a monk or a nun or it can be an unhealthy attempt to escape difficult experiences through suppression & avoidance."He provides explanations easily understood by western practitioners using modern analogies e.g. saying that mind can be like a computer with 2 windows open at once.Since scientists have shown that waking visualization can increase task performance, he logically extrapolates that to lucid dreaming as well. His approach is pragmatic & transportable to the West-e.g. p. 206: "Continue learning & receiving teachings, but develop a deep enough understanding that you can take from them what supports you."He also perceptively observes that awake practice of emptiness/Rigpa/mindfulness parallels lucid dreaming-i.e. viewing the awake state as a dream is analogous to lucid (conscious) dreaming-a yab-yum or yin-yang relationship & relates these yogas' spiritual aspects. This may be the best adaptation of traditional Bn/Buddhist works/methods to the West I've seen (see Traleg Kyabgon's "Mind at Ease" for a Mahamudra one).He recognizes that p. 41: "The concept of self-hatred is alien to Tibetans who do not have words to describe it" & compensates for cultural as well as terminological differences (p. 200: "According to Bn-Buddhism, the conventional self does exist.Otherwise no one would create karma, suffer, & find liberation. It is the inherent self that does not exist.Lack of an inherent self means that there is no core discrete entity that is unchanging through time").In short, it's a most valuable contribution to both spiritual realization & East-West understanding. His advice that p. 137: "Maybe we should write a sentence on our toothbrush, `after this, wash your mind" has, IMHO, universal application. This book is HIGHLY recommended-as are his other works.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book to start
We spend a third of our lives sleeping, with our consciousness totally 'lost' while the physical body rests.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the engaged dreamer
This is one of the best books on dreaming I've ever read. As a non-mystic and skeptical Buddhist, I found that some aspects of the Boen school's teachings (and sections of this book) to be a bit too mystical, but overall the philosophy of the book was generally pretty sound. The exercises he suggests are somewhat more helpful, I might argue, than the ones suggested by Stephen LaBerge in EXPLORING THE WORLD OF LUCID DREAMING. Ultimately, anyone interested in lucid dreaming, or using dreams to benefit his or her own waking life, ought to own, read, and re-read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful knowledge
Yin yoga is a wonderful book full of knowledge on another essential way of using or relaxing our body. It's very concise, precise, and has a lot of information presented in a nice way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Yin Yoga
Excellent book.I am studying to be a yoga teacher and will use this as a valuable resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth checking out!
This is a good book. I will probably refer to it for years to come!It contains a wealth of information, and is helping me to rethink my practice. After so long following athletic yoga DVDs, flinging myself between postures, it is indescribably pleasant to sink into poses for 5 minutes at a time, with no pressure to hurry. If that sounds good to you, then you'll want to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool forbeginners
I first got this book from the library when I was waiting to have surgery for uterine growths.I had never done yoga, and I was looking for a way to ease my pain. This book can actually help with many mild medical conditions. It is set up in an easy to reference way, with lots of pictures and clear, detailed descriptions. Many of the positions even have 2 possible methods, one for the novice, and one for the advanced student. This is great when you are first starting out and you lack flexibility.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Great book! Very practical information. I have bought this book when I was pregnant. I was not confused what I can or what I can not during pregnancy. As well the pictures help believe that is possible to do yoga even nine month pregnant!
3-0 out of 5 stars Yoga taught the traditional Eastern way
This is a reference guide written by Geeta Iyengar, daughter of BKS Iyengar, probably the most famous living yogi. The book is designed specifically for women who wish to develop their own self-study of yoga (Yoga Sadhana), and it covers not only asanas (postures) but also the other vital components of traditional yoga such as pranayama (breath) and meditation.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe would be great for beginning teachers
I have been teaching for 3 years, and thought this book would be a great addition to my yoga library, something I could turn to for inspiration in my teaching.. However, while there are a few inspiring points in this book, the title of it is "Guiding Yoga's Light: Yoga LESSONS for Yoga Teachers"--and I found the actual lessons to be very brief and lacking. But the topic of this book is a great idea, and I am glad someone has at least thought of the idea to write on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for building class themes & scripts
I use this book all the time for developing new classes. The lessons are fabulous. The downside is that it does not list nearly enough poses that go along with the lesson. It's a great starting point but you will need other resources to develop good class sequences to accompany the lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Real One
If you are really interested in Yoga-as a practitioner and not merely out of intellectual curiosity-this is one of the best books you will ever own. It is a thorough commentary on the Yoga Sutras from the viewpoint of a true Master practitioner, containing countless jewels of profound insight into Yoga practice. It gives hints, and even many outright disclosures, of the real techniques of Yoga. I have read a number of translations of the Yoga Sutras, and this is not merely the best, it is in my opinion the only real one. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Real One

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Translation Of A Vedic Scripture Ever!!!
I have been studying the Vedic scriptures since 1996. And, I must say, out of all the different translations; the bhagavad-gita, the rig-veda and etc....this one by Sri Swami Satchianda is the best!
5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Sutras of Patanjali-Commentary by Swami Satchidananda
This is an excellent book.It gives the Sanskrit for each of the 200 sutras, then the English translation, followed by a comment by Swami Satchidananda. These comments are essential for helping make some of sutras more understandable.I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Clear Beautiful Wisdom
This is one of several translations that I have read.I enjoyed it.His explanation is to the point and easy to understand. Some of the examples he gave I thought were long and (even for me) circuitous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, complete, but approach with caution
The photography in this book, the quality of the paper, and the clear prose make it a joy to read and handle. The models, male, female, young, old, and pregnant are human (not Hollywood/fashion magazine stick-figures with standarized Barbie makeup) and clearly experts in the practice of Sivanada yoga. The poses are illustrated well and the text makes the finer points very clear. The sections on diet and mediation are also clear and easy to work with.
4-0 out of 5 stars helpful photos and overview of yoga
I received this as a Christmas gift from my brother a number of years ago and have used it a great deal since then. The photos and illustrations are plentiful and helpful. There is also a good outline of a plan for doing beginner, intermediate, and advanced sequences.Though the sanskrit terms for the poses are sometimes included, they are not prominently used, and that is one drawback to the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I am just a beginner at yoga and I love this book because the instructions to the different asans (poses) are clear and understandable, AND the more complicated poses are explained through drawings and photos, not just text. You don't need to keep track of all the steps in your head as you move into the pose, it's all there in a series of drawings. So if you are a very visual person, I recommend this book. This book takes you through the most basic of asans to the most complicated. It has all kinds of drawings and photos, as well as chart-like things at the end of each section with a simple outline of the pose and a picture so you can put together your own yoga session. This book also has background on Yoga and things like diet and breathing. Some of the models are so lithe they are gross looking, and some of the poses will make you say "Holy Hell!" to yourself, but secretly you will want to learn to do them too.A great book! ... The book is really complete. Have hundreds of photos. I am a yoga teacher and this book is a great compendium of unumbered series of vinyasas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Effort!
I own this book and I have had the privilege of learning yoga from Mr. Ramaswami even though it was for a brief period of time. The book can not substitute for him, as he is an exceptional teacher but being in the United States, I treasure the book as he has done an extraordinary job in presenting yoga as he has learnt from his Guru. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I am new to yoga and really enjoying the classes. My instructors are great at explaining the poses but this book also helped me with detailed pictures of the poses and explainations of the breathing used through the poses. One feature I also like is that each poses includes gentle versions and a list of contraindications.I have spinal and joint issues that make this important.
5-0 out of 5 stars a real treat
this book presents hundreds of asanas, with beautiful illustrations and eminently understandable instructions.despite what the back cover says, I don't think I would recommend this book to a beginner.there are many other books out there, such as How to Use Yoga or The Sivananda Companion to Yoga, that provide more of the background and advice that a beginner needs.this book is basically a catalog of poses.unless you have a solid basis to work from it's probably not for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars An all around excellent yoga book
Now that yoga is so fashionable there are more yoga books in print than ever before. Many of these books are of poor or mediocre quality.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but virtually useless
This is a beautiful book, quality paper, the teacher has an engaging look, the photographs are inspiring, the print is clear and highly readable. The whole thing just looks pretty scientific with its varied schedules, programs and tons of advice on minor details (how to fold your yoga rug).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent start for a home practice
This book was recommended to me by an instructor whose class I took while on holiday.I had taken classes for several years and done some home videos and was looking to develop a home practice. This book is an excellent way to begin the process. The program is well organized and there are many modifications shown for the different poses. One cautionary note:it does help to have some prior experience. That being said, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to establish a home practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helplful teaching tool
The book offers a wide range of mudras along with the sanskrit names, supporting information and mantras.I use it at the beginning of each class I teach.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great intro to mudras
This is a wonderful introduction for the beginner. The photos are large enough to see what the model is doing, and are accompanied by clearly written, easy-to-understand instructions. There is also an overview of the subject that tells how mudras fit into the discipline of yoga, healing, and metaphysics.52 mudras for attaining physical, mental, and spiritual well being are described in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Giving it 4 stars because one particular mudra I was hoping to find in this book
was not there. The rest of the book was not a disappointment, quite the opposite. It gives explanaton of what are mudras, their origin, how to use them. Includes 50 mudras with detailed explanation for each mudra on how to pose it (plus a drawing) and what it is for, as well as affirmation that goes with it. Includes a few basic informationon acupressure, ayurveda, chakras etc. Nice book for a beginner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best yoga primer available
Buy this, and immediately take it to your nearest copy shop; have them remove its spine and give it a spiral binding so that it will lie flat. That way, you can lay it flat on the floor, where it can more handily serve as your guide while you study and practice a pose.It is the ideal first yoga text, but it is constructed to remain of use, no matter how advanced your yoga study gets.An ideal accompaniment for work with a teacher or a video, it is clearly written, helpfully illustrated by instructive photographs, and well organized for easy referencing. It includes a comprehensive collection of poses, and the poses are broken down into different levels of skill development, so that no matter how flexible or inflexible your body is, no matter how elementary or advanced your yoga learning, you can find the right pose and the right version of it for you.Even though it is a superb guide for anyone starting to develop or even just continuing a home practice in yoga, it also opens with an inspiring autiobiographical introduction and includes instruction in meditation, as well as explanations of yoga philosophy, giving some sense of how yoga can transform one's entire approach to living--without becoming evangelical about it.Schiffman has studied with a remarkable variety of yoga masters, so his text will suit students from a variety of yoga teaching traditions--Krishnamurti, Desikachar, Iyengar, Scaravelli, and so on--but not Ashtanga. There are many good yoga texts out there, but if you had to whittle your yoga library down to only one text, this one would be my choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand Yoga More
I really did not understand completely what yoga was about until I read this book based on other reviews. If you truly want to understand the "spirit"of yoga this is a great introduction for beginners and advanced students.

This book is required in the yoga teacher training that I am taking but could be assimilated and enjoyed by a person who has never done yoga.Eric talks about mindful living and using energy to improve your life which is fascinating. His prose is fluid and very calming. He also tells an interesting life story in the beginning.I also like his organic style of yoga whereby the emphasis is on the process and not the perfect pose. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing - easy to incorporate in your life
Yoga is nothing if it does not transcend into the rest of your life. This book explores yoga in ways that few other books do. This book is easy to understand even if you have no exposure to yoga. I recommend it to everyone!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wise Man & a Gentle Gift
Steve Ross has been a gift to my life. His yoga program...Inhale...on the Oxygen network has changed my life.I dance Argentine Tango and was very frustrated with my lack of progress and was ready to quit.I took the summer off and did Steve Ross's yoga routine at least 4-5 days/week. I just went back to Tango last week and after 2 month's of Ross's yoga, it was like a complete transformation. His book is a must companion for his show.I doubt if I will ever live on a diet of raw foods, but I love his overall philosophy in every way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for Yoga Enthusiasts!
Yoga practicioners of all levels will find this book beneficial as they seek to take their yoga practice to the next level. If you practice Ashtanga yoga, then you are undoubtably already familiar with the Moola Bandha, or "root lock."If not, a little background is in order. In Indian yogic lore, this is the most important of the Bandhas (tightening of the areas of the body related to the location of the Chakras). The yogis believe substantial health and psychic benefits are to be gained through the practice. It is my opinion that practicing the Moola Bandha has greatly enhanced my yoga practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
The prenatal yoga deck is a real find. I had already owned several DVDs when I came across Miller's deck, but decided to purchase it anyway. I am glad I did. At about eight months, I could barely move and the deck enabled me to stretch at my own pace. Now that my baby has moved and I have more space, I still use the deck just about every night so I can continue my practice at my level. I highly recommend this product, and plan to purchase it for my friends who became pregnant in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars I did not like the deck option.
Instead of pictures it has poor drawings, it is hard to see exactly in some cases.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Yoga Deck for Pregnancy!
I loved this Yoga deck. The pictures and directions were easy to follow, and the cards are very well organized. It was easy to customize a routine based on my trimester, and how much free time I had. I can't say enough about the excellent poses. I was able to stay very flexible throughout my pregnancy, and I felt fantastic. Additionally, the meditation phrases helped me to stay positive and truly enjoy the miracle of pregnancy!I highly recommend this Yoga Deck; it had such a positive impact on my pregnancy. A must have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for understanding human nature!
Raja Yoga is the King of Yogas.
5-0 out of 5 stars Holy
Each soul is potentially divine. Break free of attachment through controlling the gentle ripples of your mind's peace.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EXPOSITION
THIS BOOK CLEARLY DETAILS THE THEORY OF RAJA YOGA. IT'S SURPRSING TO SEE HOW EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND RELIABLE THE BOOK IS CONSIDERING THE PERIOD IN WHICH IT WAS WRITTEN. THIS IS NOT PRACTICAL INSTRUCTIONS IN RAJA YOGA THOUGH, FOR THAT YOU NEED ANOTHER BOOK OR A QUALIFIED TEACHER. I PARTICULARLY LIKE THE SECTION ON THE PRANA AND HOW THE AUTHOR EVALUTES THE VARIOUS RELIGIONS. ALSO, HE BRIFLY MENTIONS SANKARA AND HIS PHILOSOPHY. 5-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!
I just finished my first reading (there will be many more) of "How Yoga Works" last night and it was bittersweet. To the reviewer who felt corny admitting that it "changed my life," you are not alone. This is not the first book to delve into the whole of yoga, but it is the first one I have read that does it so accessibly. The authors' concept of writing this book in the form of a novel makes it more attractive to a greater audience than past attempts. And in a society where the physical poses of yoga have become so popular, I think it is more important than ever to provide insight into the rest of yoga.
5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and deep yoga instruction hidden inside a charming story
This book is a practical explanation on the deep practices of yoga, encased in an easy to read tale. The protagonist - a young woman - makes a nice change from the bearded, middle-aged male that so often is the 'star' of yoga stories.Through the chapters of the book, the storylines cover a) specific directions on how to relate to a yoga practice, b) commentaries on the Yoga Sutras of Master Patanjali, and c) how the practice of yoga actually can transform the world around you, from a prison to a school and beyond.
5-0 out of 5 stars gifted storytelling
The extraordinary gift of this book, even beyond how well-written and wise the book is, is the presentation of ideas and principles in the form of a story. The reader comes to know these characters and understand their circumstances and as a result, the principles become real, rounded-out and alive. The characters stand in the place of the middle step in understanding an idea, translating that understanding into what kind of person we are building in our practices, and manifesting that. Here the characters grow that understanding on our behalf, they give us an example and an inspiration that even the most valuable and rewarding principles often don't have on their own. The human frailty of the characters, their obstacles and misunderstandings, all become real, fertile and inspiring as we see practice and theory blossom into the kind of life sincere practice can bring. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Beginning Yoga Book Out There
In my opinion, this is absolutely the best beginning yoga book you will find anywhere. It is not a book about getting into perfect pretzel shaped postures; it is not a book pushing Eastern philosophy; and it is not just another fad exercise book. This is a serious, well balanced, and gentle introduction to yoga. It's focus is on teaching yoga movements and postures in a gentle way that is accessible to anyone, and on introducing yoga as a means to improving your overall sense of well being and health.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Find!
I wanted a book that would show me how to do the yoga postures. One that would focus mainly on the postures and less on the meditative aspects of yoga.I found both in this book.It has easy to follow step-by-step instructions which give you alternate forms of the posture if you are unable to achieve the posture at your range or level. The book gives you weekly workouts to let you know how long to try things before moving onto the more difficult postures. I have recommended this book to friends and family alike.A Great Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dean Ornish, MD on YOGA FOR YOUR LIFE
"Yoga is the most powerful system of stress management, but it is also more than that: it is a system for transforming our awareness and quieting down our mind and body to experience inner sources of peace, joy, and well-being. I highly recommend YOGA FOR YOUR LIFE as a practical and clear guide to getting started in yoga." ... Read more
