5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing the message home
This is a book you will want to share with colleagues, patients, family and friends if you are in an integrative medicine healing practice. Those that "get" what you are doing will love it for its clear description of our vision. Those that don't "get" what you are doing, may very well after reading this extremely well written, passionate story. Matthew understands that yoga goes far beyond his personal experience or any story for that matter. He uses his story to share how yoga is indeed a "waking" of the human consciousness and a responsiblity for us all. His use of humor, irony and candor make for an engaging, personal experience while pushing the reader to look beyond their personal limits.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Connection of Mind and Body
This memoir was a fabulous read.I couldn't put it down once I started.Matthew's story of his accident and recovery was heartbreaking, but the inspiration he provides for all of us gives ushope that we toocan overcome the obstacles we face in our ownlives. We do not stand apart from Matthew, but we walk with him, all of us.I feel that Matthew does not what us to feel sorry for him, but to learn from him that we all can be whole, healthy and live productive lives.I was amazed by his insights and the poetic elegance of his writing. This author will go far.Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Waking, by Matthew Sanford
This was an awesome book.A great story for anyone really, but very helpful as well to those in the medical or alternative health care field, as I am a massage therapist. I found the linking of trauma and injury with the body very helpful in understanding clients and even my own limitations or prior injuries, it proves that your muscles do remember and even have flashbacks to trauma incurred to the body.I was totally inspired by Matthew and all he went through and accomplished during his journey back to health and Im so grateful that he shared it with us. It is also a good book for anyone experiencing aging in their bodies to read as well, lots of helpful insight for all of us as we start to disconnect from our bodies because of limitations or injury or age.Very inspiring and uplifting and hopeful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hatha Yoga Bible!
This book is informative, well written and has the excact amount of theory/practicle information needed!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Approach To Anatomy
I purchased this book to assist in preparation for a small group presentation in a Yoga class at DePaul University. The course text (Donna Farhi's excellent "Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit") emphasized the need to understand bodies "to the cellular level" in order to fully appreciate what Yoga does for the body, and provided an introduction to each bodily system in relation to Yoga."Anatomy of Hatha Yoga" took that introduction to a level I never dreamed possible, and provided most, if not all of the information needed for our small group presentation on the skeletal system, especially in the context of Yoga. It's also extremely well written -- and yes, exhaustive and comprehensive -- but what comes through is the author's love of anatomy and Yoga. Some sections took more than one reading, but the challenge was as good for the brain as Yoga is for the body.I will recommend that this book be added to the course material, either as a required text or a reserve resource for students.Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars better have some knowledge or some time
My title says it all. The book is good, but it is not suitable for a novice. I was looking for books to recommend to new individuals to yoga, so I bought this book. It is good to me, but I have been teaching for 7 years. If you are new lookign for base knowledge, look elsewhere. If you have been practicing yoga for awhile, give it a try! ... Read more

First published in 1999, and its still going selling strong! This manual has a lot going for it.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Ashtanga
This book is the best book on ashtanga yoga on the market - a must have for any person interested in ashtanga yoga. It covers all aspects, showing easier versions of the poses so that the beginner can also follow it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Met or exceeded my expectations
This was recommended to me by my Ashtanga teacher. It has great photos and really complements what you hear in class. I understand more the drishti (eye gazes) and what the modifications to the poses are. When I think about it, I open it up and read about a particular pose that I am having some trouble with. It's really nice to have around.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best no-nonsense yoga textbook
There are innumerable books on yoga to be found; some emphasising the practical aspects with postures (asana), complete with colour photos - and some impossibly esoteric, meant for the select few with mystical leanings. This book combines a comprehensive overview of asana; while at the same time giving clear explanations of the deeper aspects of yoga, including breathing (pranayama), body attitudes (mudra), energy locks (bandha), energy centres (cakra), and yogic cleansing (hatha yoga).
5-0 out of 5 stars clear, helpful, and complete
The illustrations are clear for each pose. The explanations of the asanas and other practices are very helpful, and the over all presentation of the Bihar yoga discipline seems complete.Recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing book

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Nidra Meditation CD
I have been using Yoga Nidra in my teaching work for years and find this CD to be a very useful addition, informationally and practically as far as the meditation included on the CD is concerned.
5-0 out of 5 stars It really works
Every time I come home from work and feel stress, overwhelming with the everything, I just turned this CD on and started my meditation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers the goods
A friend recommended this CD. I do not know the author, either. I have used it daily for the past month and love it. I like the fact that there is only a voice directing me through the meditation, it helps to focus. If I use it a night, I fall asleep immediately and sleep without interruption until morning (unless my cat wants to be let out early). Alternatively, I use it in the late afternoon to relax from the stress of the day, before beginning evening chores. I am a yoga practitioner and have also felt its benefits in my asana practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars even if you have never been to a yoga class ...
... this book will still be of great interest and value to you if you are spiritually inclined.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but only for professionals
This beautiful book from the world teacher Iyengar was difficult to read, and I am teaching yoga already for 25 years. So, for me it was marvellous, but not recommended for beginners.
5-0 out of 5 stars The theory behind the practice
There was yoga before the time of Patanjali but it was not written down, or at least no text survives. We find elements of the practice in the Upanishads and of course in the Bhagavad Gita. But before Patanjali's codification there was no systematic text to guide the aspirant.Since then Patanjali's sutras have been translated into many languages along with commentary to elucidate the concise text, with Vyasa's commentary from the ninth century--upon which Iyengar makes some reliance--being the most important. 5-0 out of 5 stars best ky book i've come across
this book explains ky thoroughly and is very simple to understand. i highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good reference and practice book
This book is very good for reference of Kundalini Tantra subject. As we see with al books of Bihar School of Yoga, it also includes some practices that can be done also, it is not only a book of theory but gives direct and clear explanations about how-to's. But a yoga beginner will possibly find the book a bit complicated because of the terminology and practice types.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, but you need an experienced teacher
This book is an excellent resource for experienced yoga practitioners. Beginners would be confused, and beginners shouldn't be attempting to raise their kundalini. Everyone attempting to do such should be studying under a teacher or guru who has experienced a kundalini awakening (which are few and far between) and knows how to help you. If you want to know the ins and outs, and know what kinds of questions to ask your teacher/guru, than I highly recommend this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I definitely agree with the other reviews on this cd!
Everything that everyone has said is definitely true. This cd is teaching me a new way of approaching the world that I never would have thought possible. Even when I'm not listening to the cd, whenever I am in a really stressful situation like sitting in traffic or working to meet deadlines, I just imagine the cd. I automatically feel completely relaxed, like I can deal with whatever comes my way. Then when I get home I just pop the cd in, let go of all the day's stresses, and just get back in touch with myself. I bought this cd after reading the reviews, too, and I wasn't led astray! I recommend this to anyone who deals with stress on a daily basis (which is pretty much anyone), and I am going to get copies for all of my family members and friends because I definitely have some friends who need to chill out. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars R & R
A friend reccomended Yoga Nidra to me after I was complaining about always feeling tired and overwhelmed.I think alot of people deal with the same problem everyday. With three kids, a husband, and as the principal of a highschool it is so difficult to turn your mind off and realx.Even when I had a rare minute to relax I wasn't able to utilize it because my mind was always running.I went ahead and tried Yoga Nidra. It took a few times to really get into it but now I love it.I do it a few times a week before work and I can definitely feel the difference.I feel more alert at work and I think it has helped my patience with the kids at home and at school.I feel like I am more energized and it has helped me to be able to just do my day better.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Level of Awareness
A coworker referred me to this CD.Thank you Larry.I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. This guide has helped me successfully work through emotional issues that have clouded my happiness.Funny, every time I listen to the CD it is like a different first time experience. It has helped me to open up and put my energies of love and sorrow "out there".They have come back to me 10 fold in only positive ways.Best wishes to all. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Nidra
This is a very informative book.I purchased it to become more familiar with the scientific aspects of Yoga Nidra, and to help me facilitate a class that I am interested in teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars review from greek student
A very good book by Paramahamsa Satyananda about the method he invented (as far as I know ) , himself ! There is an audio cassette you can buy separately, and practice Yoga Nidra. For me it is the most beneficial practice in our lives !

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Relaxation at its Best
This book is a treasure trove of information; very readable presentation with great insight on medical and yogic issues related to this ancient practice. Yoga Nidra is more than relaxation, it is a way to access the deepest levels of the Self through the progressive suspension of distractions. It leads the individual through progressive relaxation, visualization, affirmation, and insight. Its practice synchronices the hemispheres of the brain by utilizing sound as the means of guidance. The Monroe Institute uses the same principles in its Gateway Program which uses "Hemisync" to lead the individual through progressive relaxation, affirmation, visualization by means of specific sound frequencies. If you think you may be interested in consciousness exploration give this book a try. No dangerous effects..at worst you fall asleep. This book offers an excellent practice that yields results! Great buy at any price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
I have scoliosis and this book has been a tremendous resource in understanding and caring for my condition. The book is a good start and it eventually got me interested in taking some yoga classes and exploring some of the different practices. I'm so glad I found this book; yoga has been a positive force in my life for some time now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real yoga, really good advice, well written
Lots of back pain books provide exercises, but this one takes them directly from the Iyenger Yoga method; Iyenger revolutionized Yoga from the 1960's to the present by applying contemporary knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the traditional and spiritual aspects of yoga.Teachers trained and certified in Iyenger Yoga are a 'cut' above others from my lengthy experience with Yoga practice. That said, dr. Schatz uses Iyenger's methods (Iyenger also wrote the intro) to design a comprehensive program for all types of back and neck problems; she also provides accurate and clear illustrations of the spine structure and related anatomy. The photos are very clear and easy to understand as are the instructions of asanas and restorative poses..The book is the right length, size and format. Many back problems can be treated. This book offers programs for many of them; also included is a self-analysis of one's own current posture and alignment. This is no quick fix book; the programs she recommends may take a couple of years to 'work' but it's definitely worth it to live a more vigorous, pain reduced or pain free life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by former physiology instructor and past back pain sufferer!
This is my favorite book for addressing back pain issues. It presents a great foundation in the basic anatomy of the back and then uses this information to develop the concepts that help people understand why back and neck pain occur and how to correct it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and complete collection of expert yoga information
I am a complete beginner to yoga...less than 6 months of practice and I'm 64 years old... Even with an excellent yoga teacher and a once a week class, I felt I needed some type of guide so I could do yoga at home.Videos went too fast for me and often I'd be unable to see the TV from the floor.. This book was absolutely perfect....as yogarequires a lot of practice in order to become more limber and competent. After taking many different yoga books out of the library and this being one of them, I felt I had to own it because this was the only book where I could find a specific pose, read exactly what to do (and what not to do), see beautiful photographs of someone doing the pose and adapt any of the poses to my own level by adding my own props.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best kind of its genre
This book is a must-have for yoga practicioners that want to go beyond simple asanas. This is a wonderful way to learn of hatha yoga's roots as a holistic system, and even put it into practice, since this book is a modern compilation of ancient Indian lesson-texts put into modern English. Hatha Yoga Pradipika means "Light on Hatha Yoga" (not to be confused with modern and lesser imitations that use that title). Holding this book in my hands feels like direct access to a rich history of the roots of hatha unscathed by "new age" ideas. Basically the book is about classical postures, breath control, and cleansing.

The key to this book is in the title"assist and adjust", not "correct".

5-0 out of 5 stars Bestbook on Yoga you will find
If you are looking to find out more of what Yoga is really about, not just the poses, which are a very small part of Yoga, then buy and read this book. This book gives you the background of Yoga, how to find a teacher and the basics of creating a practice among other things. The sutras are also included. The writer, TKV Desikachar, is the son of T Krishnamacharya who revitalized Yoga for the world and brought it to all people, women as well, as it was traditionally taught only to men.Krishnamacharya was the teacher of BKS Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois, both who left in their twenties and teach Yoga for young people to all.Krishnamacharya modified Yoga for the individual up to his death at the age of 100 in 1989 and his son, TKV Desikachar, the author, is his only student to learn from him up to his death.Come find out what Yoga is really about and all the tools available to you as a student or teacher!

Excellent for beginners who are looking into yoga and would like to understand more about yoga.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all around yoga resource
I own a lot of books on yoga and this is one of my favorite introductions. What makes it particularly valuable is that it explains how to construct a practice. This allows the reader to intelligently use other resources and link his or her yoga practice to overaching physical, psychological and spiritual principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Saver for Pain Suffers and Everyone Else
My cranial sacral therapist had given me xeroxed copies of these particular yoga poses that she felt would help me while I got my body straightened out. She took them from an old book that she had had. I started doing the poses but did not stick to them on a regular basis. However, I was still curious if I could somehow find the book. After a successful search online, I found the book and immediately ordered it. I must say it is fascinating to read how the Colonel explain these five particular Tibetan ancient exercises changed his life and made him look much younger than his age. The Colonel traveled through some forbidden Tibetan territory, enduring mountainous onstacles in search of this ageless monk society. The exercises are simple and do detox your system. You must be cautious and not overdo yourself in the fist couple of weeks. I love this book and will refer many people to it. It sure beats enduring an operation which may or may not cure you. It is simply another part of the growing search for alternative medicine and lfe styles.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hyped
This is pure hype. Peter Kelder never wrote a book called Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth. It's title is The Eye of Revelation and has been published by Borderland Sciences since as early at 1975. These rites are very effective. There has been some recent research into what makes these simple exercises so powerful.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like it...
I don't know if this program is going to turn me into a 22 year old again, but I find the exercises worth the 5-10 minutes a day to do.They help promote flexibility and strength.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent work!
As far as I know, it is the only work that gives such complete instructions for this very important aspect of yoga.It deserves more attention.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much in depth, not simple
You need a teacher, if you want to go in depth with Pranayama or yoga.Try following books instead of B.K.S. Iyengar's book and see for yourself:

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Tibetans
Being a yoga practitioner for 6 years now - I found this book to be an excellent resource for those who want a quick effective yoga workout - those who don't have the time to do an hour a day as I do. It is also good for when you travel as it requires no mats, blocks, blankets or any of the other props needed for most yoga regimes. Only thing I found disconcerting was the First Tibetan which made me naseuous. I have to assume this would subside with time.Well written and easy to follow. A simple but effective book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great exercises, more info would be helpful though
The exercises are great, I was recommended to buy this book and start doing them. Although I've been doing them for only two days, I already feel better. However, I have to say that the book is small, and, while the execution technique is properly explained, that is not enough. I also do qigong (beginner), and knew some other things that help, but it would have been nice if the book addressed to total beginners and explained what else is important. For example, do the same number of repetitions for each exercise. Why? Because the purpose of the tibetans is to synchronize the speed of chakras (hubs/vortexes of bodily energy), and to achieve that you have to do the same number. Even if you can do better for some exercises - don't - work up until you improve the weak ones and increase the number for all of them at the same time. ... Read more
