5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Bodybuilding Training Manual with Lots of Exercises

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Learning Guide for Weight Training
I have owned this book ever since it was first published. Periodically I give it to people asking for guidance on weight training. It is nicely comprehensive on the various exercises, giving the proper form and names of equipment, movements and such. The photos are 80's vintage and dated but the info is not. Training with free weights has not changed. The exercises that worked twenty years ago work just as well today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Exercise Descriptions
This book has good detailed descriptions on every exercises and also has info on reps, restance training and how to recover from a workout. The exercise routines are a little out-dated. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal
Because he was a champion bodybuilder, Paris begins, he's the ideal fitness book author. While sometimes championship bodybuilders go on to author terrible books, Paris has given us a great book with Natural Fitness.Taking a mind-body, rational approach to structuring change, the book helps you develop a commitment to your fitness habit by first exploring your priorities and reasons underlying why you work out, and then developing a sound, effective exercise program of weights and cardiovascular training. If you are able to commit to going to going to a gym in addition to doing regular aerobic exercise, this book will give you a good start. The list of exercises is more than enough for a beginner, but lacks the large-body muscle lifts any athlete will know, such as power cleans, deadlifts, and push presses. These more challenging (and therefore very effective, if somewhat harder to teach) exercises never make it into this book, which I wish had more exercises and less philosophy.People into the emerging whole-food, vegetarian/macrobiotic trend in nutrition might take exception to the nutritionally adaequate somewhat pedestrian diet suggestions, which abound with insipid dishes like baked potato, nonfat cottage cheese, cauliflower and spaghetti sauce (for more tasty healthful meals consider supplementing this book with the Moosewood Low-Fat Favorites Cookbook).Despite its shortcomings this is a fine book you can use to change your body and build a lifelong, healthful habit of gym and aerobic exercise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rational Fitness
Since purchasing Bob Paris' book "Natural Fitness" about 10 weeks ago, I have gone through a lot of changes. I made progress toward my weight loss goal of 35 pounds (25 down, 10 to go) I totally changed my diet, built some muscle, and began to look inside to see the things that were driving me on and off a healthy lifestyle. This is what the book is all about: the whole packsage.Paris makes a point of saying that physical health without corresponding progress in mind, emotions, and spirit is a hollow shell. He also asks the reader to delve into his or her motives for fitness in the first place and see what lurks below the surface. It has been an awesome experience because I have been a "hot and cold" fitness buff forever. Well, I'm 47 now, and the "cold" side could have dire consequences for me, so I bought the book. I am so glad I did. This book has everything a person can need to change from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one. It offers tips on the whole person, food, meals, exercises, routines, etc... and challenges our (my) tendency to look for quick fixes for long term problems. This book is real. It is honest and detailed. It has gotten me so stoked that I'm going to buy Paris' "Flawless",the 10 week phyique transformation manual. I feel I'm ready for that one because "Natural Fitness" has prepared me physically and mentally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful advice on creating a healthy lifestyle
This book focuses on introspection and examining your own goals and reasons for becoming fit.Motivation and a balanced approach toward a maintainable fittness program are stressed. It has a slightlyphilosophical tone, if you like that kind of thing (which I do).Afterreading this book and applying some of the ideas, I now bike to work andhome (30 mi) 3 times a week, I lift weights 3 times a week, and on weekends... mountain biking and hiking!I have lost 20 pounds, and I feel betterthen I have in years. ... Editorial Review

After some 20 years as a highly respected aerobic fitness instructor and health promoter--one who rarely uses the phrase "lose weight"--Kathy Smith is shifting her priorities. "I would never want to choose, but if I could only do one form of training from now on, I'd give up cardio and focus on weight training." A strong statement, indeed! The title of this, her fourth book, suggests Smith's goal is to help exercisers lose weight. But as readers work through the engrossing chapters on physiology, exercise basics, and making the shift from aerobics to weight lifting, Smith says they'll note that weight loss is simply a pleasant by-product of the true benefits generated by this straightforward, nonthreatening weight-lifting program.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I found this book to be very helpful! I loved it. I have been exercising for many years using at home videos. I actually like this book more then some of the Kathy Smith Videos I have used! I wanted to get more involved with working out with weights now that I am in my 40's. The book covers the benefits of working out with weights, nutrition and covers lots of different exercises for each muscle group.(proper form is covered and explained in detail) for the entire body along with a suggested schedule or routine for each week. I have been very happy with the routines and do them entirely at home and have seen great results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Start
I had weight trained several years ago with good results but a bad fall down a flight of stairs led me in a different direction and I after gaining weight and loosing muscle I need to start again. This was an excellent fresh start for me.I saw results in just a few weeks and feel stronger and healthier and have now moved on to more serious weight training once again.5-0 out of 5 stars Strength training is no longer a mystery
Prior to reading this book, I only used weights if they were part of an aerobics class. Now I have the confidence to walk into a weight room at a gym!Kathy teaches readers how to use weights both at home and in the gym setting. The how-to photos are very helpful.I also enjoyed the chapter on diet and was impressed by the fact that Kathy consulted with a Registered Dietitian for guidance on the nutrition chapter.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to incorporate strength training into their fitness routine. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cory Has Changed 180 Degrees from the Beginning
I've followed Cory's career from the beginning and I've seen how much she's changed. She was once a gung-ho bodybuilder who refused to rest and take time off.Now she's finally grasped the concept of true LifeBalance and I absolutely love the change. She shows you how to stay in shape while living a life! She shows you how to look great by working out LESS, and by not being obsessed with it.She even shows you how to cheat on your diet and feel great about it!Yes, she has changed. You go, Cory!

5-0 out of 5 stars A realistic, balanced and healthy approach to fitness.
Cory Everson, 6-time Ms Olympia, has written a book that offers a realistic, balanced and healthy approach to fitness and nutrition.Cory deconstructs the myths that surround fitness and well-being by sharing herOWN stories, along with others, of struggles and triumph.Cory tackles theoften neglected topic of having a healthy mind as well as a good bodyimage.By showing examples of how to identify negative mind-sets and stepsfor overcoming them; she uses her warm tone to make the information easilyaccessible for readers of all levels of fitness. It is also particularlyheart-warming when Cory shares her own personal accounts of feelinginadequate and insecure - the book is strengthened by her personalanecdotes and stories. As a personal trainer, I recommend this book to allmy clients and as an individual, I recommend this book to anyone lookingfor a clear, concise and honest approach to mind vs body fitness.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is spot-on!!
I think it's great that such a super athlete like Cory, who has "been there and done that" has written Lifebalance. It's all about rethinking why we're all trying to lose weight and exercise--is it to (a)be thin or (b) be good to yourself??By telling so many stories aboutherself you can see that she walks the talk.I could certainly relate toso much of what she said, and now I'm putting it into action and REALLYgetting results from my (already)low-fat diet and regularworkouts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Weight Training by Design -- for Structural Integrity
Few people make posture the top priority until they get an injury.I had fatigued my way into a shoulder impingement, not knowing how to position the shoulders, chest, back, abs and hips to avoid compromise and strain.Luckily I met Dale, had some sessions, bought the book.I do the "daily dozen" and about half of the exercises, which is plenty. My brain relates to the strict instructive photos. One reviewer wanted more details, but if you look closely the pictures give very definite examples. The workout is first rate if you do it right.Which builds recovery and success.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" read for people on the go!
I found Weight Training By Design to be an extremely user-friendly manual for strength-training with both free weights and weight machines.Given my tight daily schedule, I used the sample workout plans to tailor a conditioning program to accomplish my specific goals, while employing the BAM superset system to work muscle groups in an efficient manner. Those seeking various levels of physical fitness (from beginners to seasoned athletes) will benefit from the sound principles contained in this book. And this book is a definite must for people on the go who want a comprehensive daily workout, but cannot spend hours in a gym.

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptionally clear and useful method...gets one on the right track
I have tried working out with many trainers as I need the development of bone density and yet have joint problems, little cartilage, and low bone density, all necessitating great care.Without exception, every trainer before Dale hurt me.I have been working out with Dale's method, under his guidance, for over five years.I have never gotten injured and according to bone scans, my density has improved over these years. This book is a welcome addition to the body of weight training material available. It is clear and concise and allows one to develop strength and bone density (as well as sculpting the body...an added benefit!) without injury through a proven method. Now everyone can take advantage of Dale's expertise through the system he has developed and committed to writing in this book wherever they live, without fear of injury. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book for beginners
I bought this book when I decided to start weight training. I had never done any weight training before so I needed a book that covered the basics. Maran Illustrated has proven a great choice.

Over the years I have read a number of books on weight training. Most give you a routine, tell you how buff you are gonna look and toss in a picture or too. And they assume you know alot including proper form and what the heck the exercise is doing for your body.

2-0 out of 5 stars Falls Short
I was disappointed in this book.It advertises itself as containing "The Ultimate Training System," but does not live up to the title. It has some good material in it, and I appreciated the science-based support of the authors' theories. However, it is extremely light on practical examples. There are far better books out there to help you understand and develop "The Ultimate Training System."One I would recommend is The New Power Program: Protocols for Maximum Strength by Michael, Dr. Colgan.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the worst book on the subject of periodization!
I thought this book was terribly awful. Its more of a briefreview of periodization, not a book on the theory, and training. Itsalmost like a cheap, and sloppy version of cliff notes on Dr.Bompa's Serious Strength Training. I would not recommend Periodization Breakthrough to anyone. If you want the complete theory, and training methodology of Periodization for bodybuilding/strength training purposes, I very highly recommend Dr.Bompa's Serious Strength Training. It is I beleive the best written book on the topic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent--Teaches you how to create your own Peridization..
This was a really detailed book.I have read "Serious Strength Training" by Bompa, however I felt that this book gave me more insight into creating my own custom periodization schedule.Bompa's book had mostof it pre-planned.The book had excellent citations for research an gaveme all the information I needed in a well laid out format. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Train yourself to ba a fitness expert!
This book is packed with a lot of information that only a well trained bodybuilder would know gleaned over the years of trial and error. Everything you ever wanted to know about how to distinguish between productive and unproductive excercises, recommended stances, how to put a workout together and a ton of other topics are discussed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Answers for advanced trainees...
Further Brawwn picks up where Stuart McRoberts other books leave off. This book is almost entirely in question and answer format so you can skim for the questions that most interest you. I found it to be a good book and I learned a lot from reading it. McRobert is very firm in his beliefs that 99.9% of people who weight train do it wrong. I would tend to agree with that. This book is a great read for anyone who has ever looked at themselves in the mirror and said...how come I havent reached my potential. This book adresses advanced questions and training problems so if you are a beginner you may want to start with "Brawn" his earlier book. For intermediate and advanced trainees this book is a helpful resource that may shed some light on some of your training questions that go unanswered by the bodybuilding magazines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth, Fully Illustrated and Fun To Read
I love this book. I have bought several muscle scultping books for women, and this is the most in depth by far.
5-0 out of 5 stars REAL RESULTS
This book is a great addition to women's weight training books.Even if you didn't follow her weight training recommendations, her discussion/celebration of ALL of the curves that make up a woman's body is inspiring and worth reading (rather than just rear end and breast curves - she goes into the calf curve, the lower back curve, etc.)It requires a balanced workout to achieve symmetry. She definitely speaks from a woman who KNOWS what she is doing. What I get from her is that she honors the female body. She also dispenses practical knowledge of how to increase those curves and zero in on trouble spots that we all struggle with - and also helps you determine what your body type is and what you need.Okay, here's an example of one of her million dollar secrets. She maintains that "saddlebags" generate from the quads, not from the butt, as I'd always thought. She recommends these grueling 6" foot placement full down squats as a remedy - I've been doing these for a month now, and bingo! This trouble spot I've been working on for 1-1/2 years is disappearing (thanks also to my increased cardio, 5x a week), and I'm developing great shape to my legs.I ran her concepts by my personal trainer/friend at my gym and he said, "Yep!It's all about the angles!"I can't believe the difference it makes, the simple foot placement on squats or leg presses, and it does change the exercise.ALSO - regarding her comments about men looking at her curves - I have a completely different take on this. She isn't flaunting herself, she is speaking lightly of the male instinct to follow curves with their eyes (I have curves, and I KNOW this happens - no ego necessary, it's just the way males are designed)- she's just discussing the power of symmetry, not how great she is.(Come on, ladies, don't you notice great symmetry on a man?I do!)She writes in a humorous, pull-no-punches style.I wouldn't recommend this book for a first beginner (try Body for Life for this). However, if you're looking to detail out, it's a great resource unlike any I've found. While I find the cover photo a bit daunting (very buff and pumped up, almost male-like physique - but that's cool, we can all look like we want to).....I love her curved look inside - definitely a strong and powerful woman.I didn't really use this book for her nutritional advice - much of her tips are common sense things, though I eat differently than her meal plans.A good addition to your weight training library, I believe Negrita shares more secrets than you'll get elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for Women - PERIOD
I have a shelf full of weight training books, some of them are quite good, but this book is the BEST. While there are many books that will show you how to strengthen your upper body and lower body, overtime, they do not address the fact that you have to begin to isolate smaller areas and make small adjustments to your form (such as positioning your foot in or outward) in order to achieve maximum results, meaning to get really toned, cut, and overcome figure flaws. This is hard work, to be sure. And some of the exercises in this book, should not be attempted, in my opinion, until basic muscle mass has been built, so I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner. But, for someone who has been training consistently and wants to take her body to the next level, this is the book for you, and if you work it, you will make heads turn! Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This was disappointing
I was not aware that you need to be a member of a gym in order to make the most of this workout.I wish I had know that before I bought the book. How to look great sleeveless- go to a gym, hire a trainner and return this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice compilation of exercises...
After reading "Look Great Naked" I wasn't sure how this book would be, but since I was looking for something specifically targeting the upper body I decided to give it a try. This book is a useful source of advice for upper body training.Schoenfeld provides a nice array of exercises for the shoulders, chest, biceps and triceps, though I would have appreciated more guidelines on starting weight ranges for the exercises. There are pictures to help guide you and ensure you are doing the exercises properly.5-0 out of 5 stars be buff now!
I love this book! It is very well written and extremely easy to follow. I was on weight watchers and going to the gym when I hit a huge plateau, that last 20 lbs just wasn't budging. When I say gym, I mean religiously, 3-4 day's a week for at leat 2 hours sometimes more. On weight Watchers I was eating excactly what I was supposed to. So I tried this. Not only did he explain why I wasn't getting results at the gym, but he also explained why I wasn't getting results with the diet part. I kept to my points but tweaked my food intake around and did the workout as per the book and... viola! The weight came off and I have definition! Yippee! I also bought the other book "Look Great Naked". Again, the workouts were great, but the nutrition information was exactly the same (I beleive he states that somewhere) I wish he would have put both books together... oh well. Good luck to all of you trying this! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Book From Dave Draper!
One of the most fascinating aspects of reading through this latest offering from bodybuilding legend Dave Draper is the degree to which he manages to beguile the reader with his ability to use the language so effectively, with his special soft and winsome sense of humor, on the one side, and his unique way of looking at the world on the other. Sixty-something year old Draper's style is almost child-like in its simplicity and enthusiasm, and that can be quite intoxicating while one is covering subjects that one associates with sweat, struggle, and chasing the pump. Dave Draper is the real deal, and in each of the several dozen short articles included here he demonstrates why his instinctual approach to training and to life itself is so appealing.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
I had the privledge of working with Mike Mentzer back in 1977. Mike guest posed for me at the IFBB Teenage & JuniorAmerican Bodybuilding Championships that I promoted back then. Mike also replaced Franco Columbu as the lead guest power and seminar trainer when Franco was injured in the world's strongest man competition.
5-0 out of 5 stars The great Mike Mentzer
The late, great Mike Mentzer sure made his mark in the bodybuilding world. Not only as a competitive bodybuilder buut as an independent thinker for bodybuilding as well.4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
There's nothing tremendously original about Mentzer's work. All he really did is take the work of Arthur Jones and modify it in that he cut way down on the number of sets that Jones advocated, and also cut the frequency of the workouts. That being said, it's a good way to train, but don't cut the frequency down too much. Make sure you're working your whole body over 7-8 days and don't try to make progress doing less than that. A few people might be able to get away with it but most probably can't.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as working out with dvds :-l
With the exception of some myths being dispelled, there really isn't anything overly exciting or new in here. It's a good book as far as learning some moves to do if you don't already workout or if you don't have exercise dvds, but if you have a choice between the two, then use the latter. This is a boring way to workout.Plus if you place the book down while you do the moves, then the book starts closing as you take your hands of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in practical training value
Dr. Hatfield's enthusiasm is infectious, his attitude positive, and his anti-steroid stance a very, very good thing. The photography was likewise above average. Beyond that point, however, the value of this book falls off rapidly. The training seems rather random and not at all soundly reasoned in it's structure; in determining his recommended set/rep/workout frequency combinations, Dr. Hatfield even reassures the reader he's "done the thinking for you". Pronouncements lacking solid rationale (excepting an occasional referrence to the Eastern Bloc trainers with whom he studied) on the "hows" & "whys" of training like so abound. The section on nutritional supplementation contains a bit of what can only be called Dr. Hatfield's personal voodoo. As one example, he stands virtually alone in recommending inosine supplementation, the value of which has long ago been debunked and summarily forgotten amidst bodybuilding's "latest and greatest". For the positives listed above, it certainly doesn't warrant a single star rating. For the negatives that come along with them, however, I can't justify more than two.

5-0 out of 5 stars Put half inch on upper arms in 2 months
I got good results with this book.Carefully following his diet and workout plans, I increased my upper arms measurement by half an inch in just 2 months.I'm not promising it will work that well for everybody, but I am one satisfied customer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Encylopedia for Weight Training
Great book for all levels. Great fundamentals, and more indepth coverage than most can handle (lots of biology). I first bought this book in college, but a few moves later it was lost. I recently bought this book thru amazon as a handy reference, especially when I get bored of a routine and need to look for alternative weight exercices. I'm not trying to get bulky, just toned and fit ~ this book is great even if you don't want to be Mr/Mrs Universe. On the down side, it is a bit dated, and could include new research and weight routines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive, Detailed Guide for the Natural Bodybuilder
I'm not quite sure what those negative reviewers were expecting when they purchased this book, but it certainly lives up to the standards that I automatically would associate with the likes of Bill Reynolds.Like the tome on female bodybuilding co-authored with Anja Langer ("Body Flex~Body Magic"), "Sliced" by Reynolds and Negarita Jayde is the essential bodybuilding nutrition guide, cookbook, and all-around body sculpting reference book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Suppliment advertisement
This book is nothing more than a suppliment advertisement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled...bodybuilders only.
Please make sure that when you're buying this book, you're not under the misconception that this is by any means a nutritional book.I was looking for dietary hints from people who I thought would be most in tune with their bodily needs.Instead, I received a book full of 'feel the burn' and 'maintain discipline' lifting slogans and little useful information for anyone who is not preparing for a competition. If that's what you're looking for, this is a wonderful book for you.For useful insites into nutrition and lean muscle mass correlation to your daily diet look somewhere else. ...
