5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Start, Proven Results
After many years of doing very little exercise, I returned to the gym about a year ago.I purchased this book 3 months later and read it cover to cover, an enjoyable read.I continue to use the book as a reference to add additional and change exercises on a regular basis.Having followed some of the sample routines they provide, I can attest to a significant increase in strength and in general well-being. There are enough details and variations to satisfy someone just starting or getting more serious about lifting.I recommend this book - and thank the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction/reference for weight training
I'm glad I started with this book...it's well organized and very thorough. Covers all the essential things a person should know to get started in the weight room. It's also going to stay on my shelf for a long time as a reference, because it gives good tips on form, exercises, etc., as well as for other things that might pop up. you will probably want more info as you get more into training, but this book will continue to be of use as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource
I got this for my husband who is build like a horse, very active, but entirely unatheletic. I wanted to work out again and he never had but wanted to try. He learned alot about how wieght training works and is thrilled with the results (say Arnold!. I still refer back to it regularly to update our workout. It is simple and has all the info you need to get started whether you have lifted before or not. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Many better books out there.
I'm not sure why this book is so popular.I have read many books on weight training, some written specifically for women, some gender-neutral.I found this book lacking in valuable instruction, limited in its exercises with less than half of the pages actually devoted to the exercises themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
It's very motivating and easy to understand! The work outs are varied so you don't get bored. I really enjoy the book and would recommend it to any woman out there!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guide with basic exercises
This is a very well written book designed to motivate and inform you as well as share some dumbbell exercises.I was under the impression that there would be a greater variety of exercises than what is given.Still, it seems to be a great book for people looking to get moving with little weight-training experience.I may return it or give it to my mother. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book and I'm usingthe programs
I'm a personal trainer and I REALLY THINK THIS BOOK IS GREAT! I am using the information in my own personal routine, as well as my clients, with very successfull results. In my opinion, the book is easily read andcomprehended... written simple enough to get even the most technical pointsacross to most anyone. Bottom line... a great book based on coveringall aspects of modern fitness training.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas, but marred by a sloppy presentation
This book, written by a professional trainer and a champion powerlifter, presents useful information about how to structure a strength-oriented workout program.Unfortunately, the book is marred by numeroustypographical errors that make it difficult to follow and, at times, misleading. In short, this book cries out for the copyediting that itobviously never received. The book includes interesting information ondiet (including recipes, tips for eating on the road and at fast foodrestaurants, and foods rich in various nutrients), nutritional supplements, stretching, exercise performance (although sometimes the advice isconfusing), and exercise programs for specific sports. Thus, it might be aworthwhile purchase for those who can figure out what the authors MEANT tosay when the typos make that difficult to discern. But for people new toweight training, or for the fastidious who don't want to guess at importantinformation, it might be better to look elsewhere (at least until theauthors bring out a new "corrected" edition. ... Jeanette Lee, a.k.a. the Black Widow, is one of the hottest players onthe women's professional pool tour. While some critics maintain she's a staronly because she's beautiful, with her long, black hair and tight-fitting,fashionable clothes, Lee has the skills to live up to her fierce persona. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner-Intermediate book (yet for everyone)
An excellent book for beginner-intermediate players and a good one for everybody else.5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for PROS to be
Great book. No nonsense real view at the pro tour from a top world class player; one whom has not lost sight of the road traveled. She is unafraid to say how unpolished she was as an upcoming beginner and tips on being a real sportsperson. All done with impeccable witt, charm and profound insight. My perspective and game have both reached a new level; In one week of reading this book I was so inspired to get off my butt, join a BCA league, start doing drills everyday, and decided not to waste time playing around. I now make my time at the table count. In three weeks my fellow players have gone from "He's so lucky" to"His game has really improved." Jeanette Lee is an inspiration as a player and a person. Thanks to a wonderful lady and I hope that the universe finds a way to repay/reward her for her many contributions. Regards RJps just to let you know I own over 20 various books and 20 top vides on this subject. Many have helped at different stages of development; however, this is a very well written well rounded and humorus tome.

2-0 out of 5 stars The book with more I's ever written...
Yes, try counting the I's there... "I did this", "I did that". If you are a follower of Jeanette, go get it, her career is interesting. If you want to learn pool techniques, this one contains just a few interesting things and some trick shots: there are better books out there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition of this Book
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is helpful for football players
I work for a high school and got books for all our coaches for fitness training. Our football team already had a training schedule, but we picked up a few tips from this book anyways.Every little bit helps when you are trying to prepare for battle on the field. This book did the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful
This little old book, published over 25 years ago, is still one of the best books out there for getting into bodybuilding. What it lacks in specifics for nutrition can be made up elsewhere, but what it contains for no-nonsense lifting advice is stellar.Anyone who wants excellent information related to lifting, without a huge and expensive tome to tote around should buy this old standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideas that really work
Martina Sprague's scientific approach to martial arts is a breath of fresh air in a field often filled with hype and hyperbole. Her writing is insightful, easy to understand, and, most importantly, her ideas really do work. The photos are clear and do a good job of reinforcing the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get strong, get explosive, get fast
As one of the busiest writers in the martial arts today, Martina Sprague never fails to nail a subject like a well-placed front kick. In her latest book Strength and Power Training for Martial Arts, she tackles the subject with knowledge gained from years of training experience and practical application in the ring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Considering the 1989 release...
At the time this book was published, a lot of trainers didn't fully understand that there might be a better way to build strength than with what was really a bodybuilding routine. (NOW LET'S GET ONE THING STRAIGHT: The best way to BEGIN strength training is to do what -is- essentially a bodybulding program for a sound foundation of lean tissue.) I differ with Hatfield in a crucial regard: I believe that much of the value in his various methods is due to novelty,(in the end, the only thing that'll keep a trainee interested long eough to reach his next possible functional strength level), rather than any particular problem with other methods. Athletic strength training has come a long way since 1989, but that takes nothing away from one of the modern pioneers.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is junk
The [money] I spent on this book was a waste. The arthur used his reputation to peddle a inferior book on training. The book may work in middle schools, but one could easily find more in depth articles online and in journals. Very little is given in terms of theory or application and more emphasis is given to rudimentary biological processes. I find this book to be a complete waste of a few hours better spent elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars For nearly everyone....
Dr. Hatfield's book is fantastic.Although he goes into several topics at length, he then breaks them down into easier terms to understand. This book deals with a wide array of subjects, including:cycling (training periodization, not bicycling), nutritional advice, biochemistry information, and more.I highly recommend it.Even though it is at times lengthy, the overall amount of information presented within it is well worth the effort. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars underwhelmed
I ordered what I thought was a full size intro to yoga book and got the pee wee version for elves. I had been breathlessly waiting for my full size edition to arrive in the mail because I was so excited to be starting yoga. As I held the pitifully small thing in my hand I got so depressed because it reminded me of some bad relationships i've had in the past--big promises and nothing to back it up with. I binged on a quart of dulce de leche ice cream and a dozen black bottom cupcakes to try to numb my pain. These evil satanic deceivers must be stopped.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will not be dissapointed
What more can I say. I would find it hard to believe that any book covering any form of pool would be more beneficial to you than this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on a great game
"An entire book could be written on the virtues of this wonderful but neglected game," the author writes in his first work, Play Your Best Pool.Well here is the entire book.Straight Pool was the third pool game I learned how to play (after 8 and 9 ball), and it always appealed to me, partly because fewer people play it these days (due to the other two games), and partly due to its emphasis on all-around skill and it's "reserved" character, compared to the explosiveness of nine-ball. Here, Capelle covers everything one would need to know about 14.1: position play, break shots, sequence, safety, strategy, you name it.A must-have for anyone enamored of Straight Pool. The only other book I've found to cover 14.1 with such thoroughness would be Fels' Advanced Pool; other books treat it along with other pool games (not necessarily rendering their books worthless by any means).I'm not always able to play on a regular basis, so I probably won't run a hundred anytime soon...but that doesn't mean I'll stop enjoying playing pool, especially playing it Straight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pool book purchase I've ever made
First off, this is by far the best, most comprehensive straight pool book that I've ever read.Much like his previous "Play Your Best Pool", Cappelle does an excellent job of breaking down all aspects of straight pool (position play, break shots, strategy, defense, etc). And much like "Play Your Best Pool", I'd bet that players of all levels (from intro to advanced) will be able to gain insight and knowledge from this book. With that said, though, I'd recommend not reading the book cover-to-cover.It should rather be used as a guide - read the chapters that apply to you as a player.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GUT CHECK time!
See my review of Super High Intensity Bodybuilding: Nautilus Principles Applied to Free Weights, also by this book's author; my comments regarding Dr. Darden's inspirational writing and photography apply equally here. For bodybuilders of an advanced level, the routines and techniques herein are simply unmatched in intensity and WILL stimulate growth unlike any other regimen you're likely to employ; THIS I can say from personal experience...my best gains ever in my years of working out. You've simply GOT to be willing to outlast, out-suffer, and just plain out-stubborn rhe pain and nausea you'll endure if you've got it in you to follow the directions therein to the letter. For a passionate musclehead as myself, however, sustaining such motivaton isn't quite so forbidding a possibility when you're actually stronger and taping out bigger every two weeks or so.

Editorial Review

You'll never run out of ways to use Swiss (also called stability) balls and medicine balls with this book, which describes and illustrates 69 exercises that can be done with one (or sometimes both) of these balls. Swiss and medicine balls are popular among athletes for conditioning, strength, flexibility, and balance. They provide an unstable platform, challenging balance and core stabilization and helping athletes train for unpredictable situations. You'll progress from basic exercises, like pushups with the feet on the Swiss ball and crunches lying on the ball, to challenges like kneeling on the ball unassisted for three minutes and the one-legged jackknife. Each exercise is described in three stages--setup, movement, and finish--and many also include advanced variations. Illustrations--usually two per exercise--are clear and large, and the book opens flat, so you can do the exercises with the book beside you on the floor. Special training recommendations for football, skiing, tennis, soccer, golf, judo, hockey, baseball, figure skating, volleyball, and basketball are included. Both authors are strength/conditioning coaches, lecturers, and consultants. This book is highly recommended for the serious exerciser, athlete, or trainer looking for innovative ways to use Swiss and/or medicine balls. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the novice
When I decided to get back in shape, I was always mistified by the people who were using swiss balls. At times I was temepted to get a trainer session or two, then I stumbled onto this book. There are 69 exercises concisely explained, and clearly illustrated grouped by area worked. My only complaint is that a few of the exercises (maybe 10 or 12) require a partner to do.All in all after a few weeks I can feel the results, and I didn't need a personal trainer to get results using stability balls.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is all you need.
If your into ball training. Strength ball training is the only book you will need. This has every possible excercise you can do with a strength ball. Plus some! Highly recomended for the ball trainers. Plus you can do it at home, for you television buffs, even in front of your T.V.

When I was a kid,I remember seeing the guys who boxed at the YMCA gym using Medicine Balls as part of their training. Medicine Ballswent by the wayside becausepeople lost interest in using them. So I find this great book on Amazon, with a lot of great exercises showing how to work the medicine ball into your routine. The book is clear and fun and can be used by both men and women.I tried some of these great exercises with my wife and a friend of hers, we all had a good time, and everybody liked the Medicine Ball Workouts!!! Now we are allgoing to use these routines on a permanent basis. My only complaint is that they don't tell you what weight medicine ball to get. The websiteprovided showed very expensive balls. I got a 15lb ball... at a Sports Store.( Most stores don't carry the 15lb size so you may have to shop around). ... Read more
