4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book
This is a good book that gives practical advice on how to start or modify a walking regimen during pregnancy. I think it would mostly be useful for beginners who don't know how to start, but it does have plans for moderate and competitive exercisers who want to make sure they are not overdoing it while maintaining a higher intensity. The book reminds me a bit of DK books, with their vibrant photographs. There are some sections on strength training and stretching, and the second half of the book discusses walking during the period after the baby is born, which the authors divide into four postmesters. Overall, a good book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good , but not as helpful as it could be
I am not interested in sending this book back to Amazon as I do enjoy having Yoga positions at my finger tips. It's a good book for people who have never done yoga or would like to try yoga stretches for warm ups - cool downs during exercise. But I didn't find it helpful for what I thought its purpose was - how to combine yoga and walking. I thought possibly there would be more about how to hold yourself while walking, breathing while walking, positions to do with your arms and legs while you are walking. Possibly I should read this again.... hmmm

1-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it but could not.
I had trouble with this book because it is poorly written. I love both hatha yoga and walking so I hoped that this book would have something to offer. 5-0 out of 5 stars Take a Moment for Yourself
From the moment I picked up the book Yoga and Walking, I said to myself "I can do this!"As a women with a loving partner, four children, a full time job and all that goes with them, I have little time for myself.I have been searching for a way to incorporate fitness into my life for years. How could I do this between baseball games, homework and karate lessons, etc.?I have never tried yoga, let alone take the time to go for a walk.In order to tend to all of the details that I need to attend to, I sacrifice my time. When I began reading Yoga and Walking, I immediately felt the love and peace throughout the text. The loving guidance from the Sarleys, as they took the time to describe yoga, its postures and breath work in detail, is evident within each page.I journeyed with them on their walks, I breathed with them. Then I realized, I was reading a book about yoga, without feeling that it was completely foreign.I never felt that this was out of my league, or that I should already know all of the "yoga language".I found that this book had a human quality to it unlike any other; a sense of peace and tranquility. With the words from the Sarley's, "tell yourself that you only have to walk for five minutes", I began on my path to peace and serenity. Now I take a moment for myself.I have a sense of how to bring balance to my busy lifestyle.Itake a few moments to breathe and I go for a yoga-walk.It clears my mind and gives me balance. This book is a gentle reminder that we all need to take a moment for ourselves in this busy world. This is not a "how to" book, but a book that brings forth a relaxed, unconditional path to personal, spiritual and emotional growth, one step at a time. ... Editorial Review

Given the exotic nature of so many bodywork practices, readers will be surprised to learn that they can improve their health and well-being with something as simple as walking. But that's just what Los Angeles physical therapist Brourman asserts here. Walking isn't just a great physical and meditative exercise, she points out, it's the physical activity we do most often. And just as imbalance, poor posture and untoned muscles can lead to painful injuries, correcting the way you walk and strengthening and stretching your muscles can speed your recovery or prevent you from getting hurt in the first place. Because Brourman doesn't have the luxury of seeing every reader personally, a great deal of the book is devoted to diagnosing and solving individual gait problems--something that can be done, she says, because the standards of human symmetry are the same for everyone. "The truth is that height, weight, proportions, age, sex, and all other human features and options don't change the basic elements of a symmetrical walk," she writes. The instructions are reasonably easy to follow (although some readers may be disconcerted by a common experience--when you start thinking about how you Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Need Something for Those Aches and Pains?
Having a variety of foot and leg problems plus being told that I "walk funny," led me to search out this book.Anxious for a quick fix, I wanted to jump right in with exercises targeted to my specific problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book took me from a level 6 of chronic pain to ZERO
I have spent the last five years in agony with a bad ankle. For some strange reason that I didn't understand at that time,(and neither did the two surgeons, one rhematologist, two podiatrists, four physical therapists and countless er docs with whom I consulted over the last thirty years), as I was doing my regular areobic work, I totally ruptured the peroneal longus tendon in my right foot. Two surgeries later I was left with a chronically swollen ankle.I had lost the tendon and the peroneal nerve.Ihad total ankle reconstruction and had my heel bone moved over so my ankle would be more stable. It wasn't.5-0 out of 5 stars Of benefit to everyone who takes a step.
By following the principles in this book, I'm quite sure I have minimized the pain and discomfort of two leg injuries within a year, both requiring a cast - broken ankle requiring surgery and hairline knee fracture, as well as an arthritic hip, all on the same leg. Although I found the technical explanations tough going, I believe I distilled the essence of the instruction into a brand new, better way to walk.I walk my dog twice a day so I slowly incorporated one aspect at a timeinto changing my walk. There is no doubt that my leg muscles are stronger as a result of my redesigned walk. The book leaves no stone unturned with respect to its topic, so I am quite thankful that I discovered this A to Z instructional reference book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars LD runner
I would not have purchased this book if I had been able to preview it at our library. It is more of a pamphlet than a book.If Precor included it with the purchase of it's treadmills OK, but don't pay for it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the novice
This is a well written book that is intended for the person who plans to take treadmill workouts very seriously. It's not aimed at the ordinary person who wants a workout program to acheive good health and cariovascular fitness. It is also heavy handed in it's message selling Precor fitness products. It's irritating and distracting. If you plan to run in a marathon, there are some good workout schedules. But a beginner or someone with little workout experience should keep looking in other places.

4-0 out of 5 stars full of good ideas
Though the word Precor is used throughout this text, the ideas are relevant to other manufacturers equipment. I have used the book's suggestions on LifeFitness Equipment and have reduced my times. The use of an elliptical trainer as suggested has also been most beneficial. The book's workouts help reduce the inhert boredom of a treadmill run. For ideas on interesting workouts with treadmills this book is a must ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars No more excuses
I am a huge fan of fitness books and have begun looking for decent books on walking.Unfortunately, most of them are rather cheesy in my opinion.I really wanted a book that was not boring and would encourage me to continue (progress) my own walking program. This book is exactly what I was looking for!

3-0 out of 5 stars I Wish It Was Longer
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was a conversation piece for my co-workers and me.I do, however, wish that it was longer and a little more detailed. Also, I feel Chapter 5 on Sexual Maladies could have been left out,

1-0 out of 5 stars Tripe -- If I could give ZERO stars, I would.
This was a waste of time and money. If I had recourse to read another book, I would have, but unfortunately this was all I had on hand in the hour or so that it took to read this disgrace to publishinghouses everywhere.I could have found a better-written and more entertaining book by scouring the pages of an elementary school Scholastic book-club order form.It is unconscionable that any good editor took a look at this and let it pass through to printing in such a state.
3-0 out of 5 stars Less In-depth than I had hoped
I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.That being said, I was disappointed with this book's lack of depth. Many of the descriptions read like an unfinished thought. If you have any previous interest in "Strange Diseases and Conditions," you already know too much to count this book as a worthy investment. Not unlike a previous reviewer, I too was dissapointed by the copious references to websites.I am also curious as to why the author did not illustrate more examples, rather than directing the reader elsewhere. On the upside, it was a shockingly easy and quick read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Beat ! !
Weight Watcher's Walk includes music and tips for three different levels of walking along with warm-up and cool-down sessions.3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
Like another reviewer, I bought this tape with high hopes for a great walk. The music is pretty, and I enjoy listening to it, but the pace is WAY TOO SLOW!I usually just put this in my walkman for company while I walk, and walk much faster.I also hate the beginning where the instructor talks through a warm-up and stretches. Why not just start walking? The longer workout, combining both sides of the tape, is what I usually use, and even this is not strenuous enough for me.Like I said before, the only reason I keep the tape, is that I like the music.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you have never walked before....
then you might like this tape. However, if you actually like a beat in your music...run the other direction.I would recommend this to someone who has never owned a walkman and gone on an exercise walking workout. The music is from most elevator soundtracks....I would describe it as listening to a Michael Bolton cd.I have to admit that I was really in shock with the slow-jazziness of it.I had high hopes when I bought this tape....instead, my grandmother now listens to it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a very good and easy to follow book on qigong
The texts I have run across on qigong, usually have the author claiming that certain information is not given, because it is "secret." This leaves the buyer of the book feeling cheated. Not this book. It offers a full set of excercises on walking qigong, which are easy to do. I was amazed at the simplicity of the book. The author takes the reader step by step, through the excercises and gives excellent practical advice, on all phases of practice. The book is concerned with preventing and curing disease, through the circulation of cosmic energy. This is an excellent text because it is complete, logical and easily understood. I heartily recommend it. ... Read more
