5-0 out of 5 stars Better urban planning for better walking
Street and subways in urban areas are increasingly inhospitable to walkers even as health publications advocate more walking for health: that's why the message in WALK FOR YOUR LIFE: RESTORING NEIGHBORHOOD WALKWAYS TO ENHANCE COMMUNITY LIFE, IMPROVE STREET SAFETY AND REDUCE OBESITY is so essential. Author Marie Demers, Ph.D. has been a health researcher for the past twenty-five years: her background of psychology, biology and anthropology lend to a survey of urban environments and what creates and encourages a 'walkable' environment to bring back both health and community sense. An excellent call for better urban planning reinforcing the health benefits of walking.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Walkable Communities
My wife picked up this book for me, since she knew I am interested in walkable communities, and it didn't disappoint.
5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and utterly persuasive argument in favor of creating safe, health inducing, walkways
In Walk For Your Life!: Restoring Neighborhood Walkways To Enhance Community Life, Improve Street Safety And Reduce Obesity, author Marie Demers draws upon her more than twenty-five years experience as a health researcher, an epidemiology, as well as her background in psychology, biology, and anthropology, and worldwide travels to create a comprehensive and utterly persuasive argument in favor of creating safe, health inducing, walkways in urban and suburban locales so that men and women of all ages and health conditions can obtain the undeniably benefits of regular exercise through the simple means of walking. Indeed, Demers lays out a clear and convincing case for the restoration of a "walkable" environment that would have the additional social benefits of enhancing community life while addressing the current obesity epidemic. Walk For Your Life! is "must" reading for anyone seeking to establish the opportunity for more mobile, healthy inducing, pleasurable opportunities and conditions in their community allowing them to walk their way into a better physical, mental, and emotional condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking into the Wind, reviewed by ML Chandler
Although written as a journal, Walking into the Wind is more than a diary.Through the days -- good and bad for Barbra with lupis symptoms lurking in the background -- we find a woman who decided to look for silver linings. She demonstrates God's grace to see beauty, be inspired, find hope and enjoy wholeness, whether "well" or not. 5-0 out of 5 stars You won't put it down
What a wonderful, candid book!Barbra Goodyear Minar so transparently shares her experiences about living life in spite of dealing daily with chronic disease.Since I don't live with the challenge of a chronic disease or disability, I wasn't sure how the book would affect me.In truth, it is a refreshingly wonderful view of living a great life in spite of challenge. We all face challenges, living life as imperfect beings in an imperfect world. But we can, no we must, choose everyday to get up and move forward when we've been knocked down.It is our choice whether to live in joy with a positive attitude regardless of our circumstances.Barbra shares her journey, both the joy and the struggle, in a refreshing, candid manner that is encouraging and relatable. You can see how, despite her significant health challenges, her daily habits of walking with God, choosing joy, getting up when knocked down, going forward instead of playing the victim, have produced great fruit in her life.I have been encouraged to re-examine my attitudes and habits, to choose joy and be thankful despite any circumstance and to seek a closer walk with God.A great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Living Over the Circumstances
Barbra Minar's latest book will not disappoint those who have come to know and love her work.In Walking Into the Wind, she again shares her heartin every paragraph.Using her own journal entries and correspondence with friends, she reveals her day-by-day struggle as a wife and mother dealing with the effects of the disease that invaded her body on her honeymoon.Chapter after chapter we watch her achieve victory over the depression that often accompanies chronic illness. When my own daughter was diagnosed with the same condition, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, we found great comfort in the shining optimism of one who had been there.Chronic illness seems more widespread than ever, affecting friends, neighbors and members of our extended family.I'm grateful to this author for a book I can recommend to help and encourage them.Walking Into the Wind is an inspiring read for anyone, but especially one challenged by such an illness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tape!
I have owned this walking workout for several years and I love it.It's so much better than simply listening to the radio while walking, because the beat of the music keeps you on pace.It gradually gets more intense,so you have time to catch your breath.I keep hoping Kathy Smith willproduce more tapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent walking work-out companion!
Kathy Smith is great! I first began using her aerobic video, so when I became interested in walking for weight loss, I bought this tape along with her other "Walking for Weight Loss"The tapes are excellent forkeeping me paced at a fat burning level, keeping me motivated. There are 4workouts on this tape, (2) 30-min, (1) 40-min and (1) 60-minute, sodepending on what kind of workout I want, it's all in one set! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It may not work for everyone, but I lost 40 pounds........
I am disappointed this book is out of print. I have had the book for ten years and still refer to it! This is an excellent book for those who may be intimidated by the "gym barbies" with a nine inch waist who appear to have been born in spandex. This book is just full of common sense for ordinary people. I am notso sure about walking solely to lose weight without dieting. Idid diet along with the walking. I was so proud of myself the first time I walked a whole mile! Within months, I was up to 6 miles a day. By then, it wasn't about dieting, or weight loss. It just felt good. This book is just what the doctor ordered... ... Read more
