5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, A Useful Walking Technique
While ChiRunning was the first running technique book I'd ever read, ChiWalking is definitely the first walking book I've ever set eyes on. With something that we do almost unconsciously, it's kind of silly to think that we'd need an instructional on how to put one foot in front of the other, right?
4-0 out of 5 stars If you love to walk, don't pass this book by!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for the experienced runner and novice walker
As I read this book (I am beginning a walking program), I became very honored to read about all the blood, sweat, and tears Ms. Switzer went through during her career as a runner. She makes you feel you are with her during those times. Her advice is sound, professional, and in your best interest. If you listen to what she tells you, i.e., how your shoes and clothes should fit; how you should start out on your program; and the wonderful advice to "get you out the door," you willhave a very long and rewarding running/walking program, that can and will enhance your life. This book has really changed my outlook, my exercise capacity, and pretty much my overall health! Thanks for writing this book, Ms. Switzer. I owe you big time!Sandy, in Florida.

1-0 out of 5 stars Errors
This book comes across as poorly edited and researched.Contains mispelled words and incorrect statements such as "air is 80% oxygen".It is also hard for a beginning runner to relate to a marathoner who has run for almost her entire life.

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRING AND SENSIBLE! BRAVO!
I hadn't run for 17 years and never ran more than 3.5 miles. (I'm 40.)With the help of this book, I am up to 5 miles (and counting!).The book is easy to read. The program is easy to follow. However, this book is for people who are basically in good health and who like to exercise. The book will not GIVE you motivation, it will simply help you if you are already somewhat motivated and want to get in better shape.I have followed her advice, gotten great results and enjoyed the process. This book has been worth a million to me! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars week 6 and doing great
I bought this book after returning from a long trip hiking abroad. I was in love with my new muscular legs and wanted to keep it up.I decided I was finally gonna learn how to run, I have always wanted to but didn't know how to start.I tried many times before and had injured myself within the first week.I am also young and relatively athletic.I saw this book and decided to give it a try.I will say that I had to start over once at week two or so because I had gotten off schedule and it was I wasn't keeping up with it well.I started over and that was 6 weeks ago.I don't know if I have lost any weight but I will tell you my endurance has sky-rocketed.I can run easily for 8 minutes when before I couldn't last more than 1-2 without panting to death. This book is so great because it plans it all out for you.The sessions aren't that strenuous and honestly if I am really stressed out I go out and run and I come back all relaxed, it is my therapy.I felt the beginning chapters of the book are a bit much, but may be necessary for someone who hasn't been physically active in a while.I just keep the 13-week program page bookmarked and see what I have to do each day.It is a really great book if you want to learn how to run and build up your endurance all by yourself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware - Completely Revised Program
A lot of the reviews here apply to a different edition of this book that prescribes a significantly different program.
5-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was a hopless case!
If you are even thinking about starting a running program you must start with this book. When I bought this book in April of 2006 I was hoplessly out of shape, and I couldn't run more than 20 seconds at a time.Last Saturday I ran my first 5k, and though I wasn't all that fast, I ran the entire distance and I felt great afterward. The beauty of this book for me is that it allowed me to set goals, build strength, and run without injuring myself. The key is to be patient, get some good shoes, and follow the program.I have another 5k in two weeks, and I'm signed up for a 10k at the end of September. If you're really serious about taking up running this book is a great investment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE Best Book on Walking!
I have read many books on walking, and this is by far the best. It is good for the novice or expert and contains a great progressional walking program that you can jump into at any point.

Leslie's new book helped me "think smart" about what is really holding me back from loosing weight. Each week you work on a new issue and you journal directly in the book. Also great receipes. Love the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars GET THEE BEHIND ME, TEMPTATION !
All of us want to look better. All of us want to feel better. Many have tried more fad diets than we care to remember - all of which did little or nothing for our weight or our good nature. For me, Leslie Sansone's programs work because they're simple, they make sense and, of all things, they're effective.
4-0 out of 5 stars An encouraging book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Ready To Run Faster
This is a great book that was easy to read, with ideas and workouts that were easy to incorporate into my training, racing and nutrition. Before I had this book, I was frequently injured and I had run a half-marathon in two hours. In the nine months since I got the book, I have run a 1:37:51, and then a 1:24:48 and I believe I'll go faster in the future. If you want to run faster and healthier, you should get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Information - Easy to Read
This book provided great information that I could actually apply to my own training and nutrition. It is easy to read and easy to use to plan my workouts.I'm seeing improvement in my running and training is more fun.I'd recommend it for anyone starting out or stuck at a running pace on which they know they can improve.

1-0 out of 5 stars Same old stuff
I would not recommend this book, even for beginners. There is no "new" information in there. You could read all of it in one issue of Runner's World. It was a disappointment and a waste of my time and money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, good motivator
Thought this book helped to motivate me on the 10,000 step goal even though at times it was fairly unrealistic to think one would move to the city in the interest of taking more steps! It lays out a six week program that is realistic and achievable.I feel better already 3 weeks into it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me in Europe
I am an American who lived in Europe for about 8 years. I walked everywhere, probably 4 or more miles a day. I weighed about 180 back then. I now live in the U.S. (Dallas) and weigh about 192. I can tell you, walking works. My dad told me when he visited me in Europe how fit I was and thin. I ate all the same "fatty" foods as now, and drank as much beer, but I still was thinner, because I walked so much. This book shows you how to do it. I now have a pedometer on my belt and I try to get the "gold standard" of about 9,500 steps a day, which is the average in central Europe. I know this works, because I did it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking is thebest Medicine(Hippocrates)
This important walking recommendation and lifestyle advice was already given around 450 BC by the classic Greek physician Hippocrates. "Pedometer Walking" is a very welcome and timely book by experts to update this advise with the help of a modern stepcounter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes basic is best....
I have many walking tapes, but sometimes I just want the encouragement without all the blather. This CD set a very nice pace, and I found Rita "speaking up" periodically helped to keep me focus when I started to drift off.One advantage to this over my iPod playlist is sometimes the music beat is too fast, and I'll get so caught up in the increased tempo that I risk straining something.I bought 2 more copies for family members.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Healthy Heart Walking CD
This was a waste of money.I wishI could exchange it for a more effective CD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty dumb!
What this book says is to eat less and exercise more. This is supposed to be new and insightful advice? The step counter that came with the book is crummy. The battery rattles around in the thing and the steps don't count correctly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
A very interesting and different way of looking at weight control.30 pounds in 12 weeks - I guess it works!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - May help you realize why you haven't been losing weight
This book has really opened my eyes up to one thing...why I hadn't lost weight. I've been dieting since I had my son buthit a plateu. I hadn't been exercising regularly and with a long commute to work 3 hours round trip) and then sitting at a desk all day, I wore the pedometer before trying anything in the book to see how many steps I was getting before making a conscious effort. I was shocked to learn that I had only been taking 1500-2500 steps a day, on days I worked. Days I didn't work I averaged more around 5-6,000. Still that wasn't very good since the book gives you a minimum of 10,000 a day.

4-0 out of 5 stars good place to start
I thought that it was a volume 2 to "walking for pleasure exercise" but it is really a revision of it. So either one is sufficent, no need for both books by this author. Covers the topics needed to get a good start on exercise walking, a little bit more on diet than the earlier book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good choice for beginners
Malkin's book is excellent for the beginner. I can say that because I am one.5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly informative!

Editorial Review

Mindless exercise may improve circulation and trim fat, but what does it do for the being within the body? Instead of zoning out (reading magazines on the treadmill, planning shopping lists while jogging), Carolyn Scott Kortge encourages readers to zone into the exercise through mindful walking. Like yoga, spirited walking is a form of meditation in motion, offering physical rewards as well as mental and spiritual benefits. The wonderful irony of conscious exercise is that by giving the mind a steady focus, you get the rest you seek, writes Kortge. Kortge, who has extensive journalism experience, offers clarity and personal anecdotes, as well as specific advice. Topics include breath work, affirmations, how to structure a meaningful walking routine, maintaining motivation, and embarking on a walking pilgrimage. Read more

Though not a race walker, I'm well beyond fittness walking, walking faster than many others run. It's hard to find a book that takes you beyond fittness walking, but this one does.It has plenty of material for the beginning or average fittness walker, but also has lots of exercises for those who are ready to take thier practice to the upper levels.

I enjoyed this books suggestions on using mantras to encourage yourself to go that extra distance. It is written with the beginner and beyond in mind to motivate you to bring more "sacredness" in to a simple act that we often take for granted. It isn't packed with alot of technical information about aerobic walking but does suggest reliable resources for the absolute beginner. It also includes the author and other's stories of "flagging motivation" and how they were able to overcome it by bringing more mindfulness to the situation. This is key not only in walking but in life in general (try the mantra exercise the next time you need motivation to get that laundry folded or wash those dishes!)If you're looking for something to motivate you to put more "pep in your step" this is one great book to do it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doing it!
I've found this book remarkably helpful. As one who has not exercised for some time due to health problems, I am just getting back into exercise by walking.I'm finding this book helpful with ideas of how to walk to keep things interesting and moving forward physically and mentally. It also keeps me inspired.I read a little every couple days just to keep my interest and inspiration levels up.I've found it very helpful and would recommend it to anyone, whether a beginner at exercise or one who has been walking physically but would like more "spirit" in it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT WALKING BOOK - A must read!!!
This is an excellent walking book because it is so informative and motivational! It provides oodles of information about what shoes to wear, what gear to wear, winterize your walking program, how to walk off your weight, a routine for the road, how to prepare for a 5-K or a marathon, and dynamic walking routines...and everything else you need to know.I highly recommend this book to the beginner or advanced walker. This book has inspired me to walk three (3) 5Ks in the past four months and I now walk on a daily basis!Just buy it and read -- you'll like it! =-)

5-0 out of 5 stars "Above all, do not lose your desire to walk"
I have enjoyed Maggie Spilner's writings for many years and it's great to find her walking wisdom packed into one book! I especially recommend this book if your inner sloth needs to be reminded (as mine does) to get out and walk-- Every Day!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
This book is a good read. Two others that were better for me from a walking program perspective are:"The 90-Day Fitness Walking Program" by Mark Fenton (GREAT walking program for the couch potato beginner - starts w/ 10 minutes a day and gradually works up to 30 minutes a day - also not an information overload for a beginner) and "Walking Magazine The Complete Guide To Walking: for Health, Fitness, and Weight Loss" by Mark Fenton (this is the one i'm using now - great walking program schedule and tons of very good info on keeping variety in your fitness routine). If you can afford them, get all three. (I also like "The Sprited Walker" by who I forget, for motivation.)If not, start w/ the "The 90-Day Fitness Walking Program" by Mark Fenton and maybe this Prevention one to get you additionally fired up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great results immediately, but a lifetime to enhance them
What a terrific book!Despite the fact that it's an exercise book, it is extremely engaging, and the concepts easy to follow. The challenge is to have the patience to read the bookthrough completely so that you understand fully what Breathwalk is all about, before trying it out haphazardly.5-0 out of 5 stars Brethwalk
I agree completely with anitareads' review. The material is excellent but it does require some effort to put all the pieces together.Still, it's the only book of its kind that I know of and what it teaches is priceless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great technique but could be better organized
Breathwalk is a simple and powerful idea but this book makes it needlessly complicated which is why I can only give it four stars. However, the book IS well researched and well written, and so I do recommend it as long as you know in advance that you'll have to do some work to dig all the bits of information from many different chapters. 4-0 out of 5 stars interesting study of cross-cultural religious practice
I was sorry to see only one, rather negative, review for this book.I have used it in college classes for several years, and most students enjoy reading it.It is a good example of how studying the same activity(firewalking) in two different contexts (Greece and the U.S.) can shedlight on the practice in both cultures. The author is respectful aboutboth Greek Christian and American New Age firewalkers, and reveals how theritual is transformative for both groups... but, as you might expect, invery different ways! It will also tell you something about how ritualsheal, and about medical anthropology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Alternately interesting and tedious
This is an occasionally interesting study of the interplay among culture, religion, medicine, and kinship in Greece and the United States.I can't help thinking that Danforth could have made his point in 200 pages ratherthan 300.Also, I dislike a tendency towards legitimization of stigmatoward mental illness and it's pharmaceutical treatments. ...
