4-0 out of 5 stars Good Base for INtermediate/Advanced Training
While this material might not be ideal for most beginners, once you've been training for a while, it will be an invaluable addition to your training regimine.4-0 out of 5 stars A good second-stage triathlon book
There are better books for beginners (I used Triathlon 101 by John Mora, which I found perfect for my first race), but when you're ready to focus on improving performance instead of simply finishing, this book can help you get to that next level. He explains the technical details, but then generally summarizes in layman's terms. He encourages technical training aids like heart rate monitoring, but also proposes lower-tech ways of estimating. At the end of the day, however, if you want to improve and have a limited time budget, you've got to be organized and be willing to structure your training for greater intensity. It's not easy and it's not going to hold your hand; it is focused on performance

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is too technical.
After reading reviews that stated this book was simple to use and had specific examples, I couldn't wait to receive it.I really need time saving training methods and hoped this book would offer solutions. What Ifound was the usual confusing information on VO2 max, heart rate and othermeasurements that needed to be taken before you could move on to what youcould do to train efficiently in less time.I tried to skip all that andmove ahead to the meat of the book and found that pretty confusing too.IfI had enough time to read and comprehend this book, I wouldn't need it...Iwould spend the time training.I am going to give Mark Allen's new bookabout the same topic a try. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Very inspirational, but too basic
Steven Jonas does a very good job motivating 1st timers for a triathlon, but if you've ever participated in ANY sport competitively, this book is just too basic. It's more of a primer for healthy living with basic stretching, basic swim, bike & run skills included.Fantastic for anyone starting an excerise program for the 1st time, but definitely not for anyone remotely athletic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner info
I read this book before competing in my first triathlon and found it extremely helpful and supportive.I recommend it to anyone who is considering training for a triathlon.Jonas is great at making you feel like you can accomplish anything. His advice is simple and solid. My onlycriticism is that he focuses too little on female triathletes. Most of hisclothing and equipment advice is male-oriented.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information source forFirst Timers!
I would say that this book can truly motivate those to get started on their first Triatholon with realistic goals in mind. The author gives realistic goals for those who are about to embark on a unfamilur journeyinto Triatholoning!Everywhere from Training to Technique to stoping for aHamburger in the middle of a Triatholon. The author is so easy to relateto, and very entertaining! Can't wait to start my first Triatholon! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good training diary, but not a thorough triathlon guide.
The Triathlete's Training Diary for Dummies is a good book for getting someone in shape for a triathlon, but not necessarily completely prepared for one.The book does give a 12-week training plan that splits the workouts between distance, sprints, and weight training but does not specify how much time should be spent on each of the three sports. For instance, I could follow the entire training plan without setting foot in a pool or on a bike. The training plan also does not specify practicing more than one sport during a workout, so you may not be prepared for the difficult bike to run transition.4-0 out of 5 stars The Triathlete's Training Diary for Dummies
If watching the Ironman inspires you to get off of the couch and enter a local triathlon, make your first purchase The Triathlete's Training Diary for Dummies. The Diary is more than a training logbook - it also contains a simple, soup-to-nuts guide that will show you how to train for, and successfully complete, that first race.As someone who has moved just beyond the novice level in the sport of triathlon, I can attest to the folly of trying to gleen information about triathlons from various articles and books that are all too often geared for the mature racer. The Diary would have made that first race sooooo much easier!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - everything comes together for the perfect tool!
This in an absolutely fantastic piece of work by Svensson. The tips from the top athletes integrated with the very well designed and strategized training log pages make this a constant source of guidance, referral and of course log information.
3-0 out of 5 stars Logbook - Yes;Training Info - No
As a I start training for the very first time in triathalons, I thought this book would have much more complete training information then it does. The title is misleading. The training information is presented haphazardly and in my rookie opinion, at times confusing and incomplete. However I do find the logbook portion to be organized well, and the structure (binding and size)of the book enables me to take it with me on my trips away from home. I have also had fun keeping a log for the first time and it makes me feel more "accomplished" as I can see my progress. Lower the price a few dollars and it is a better deal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will you REALLY use this?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction for a first timer
This is a good and understandable introduction to triathlon and nothing more. The workouts got me through my first one with a pretty respectible time but if you are looking for more info, other books such as Triathlon 101 are a better bet.In defense of this book, I don't believe it was written to be more than an introduction to the sport.Good workouts in the back.

If you are training for your first triathlon, and/or you think you might only do one triathlon and don't want to invest too much money, this book might do it for you.It has basics on everything from work-out schedules to weight training to nutrition. It was okay for what I wanted at the time and the price, but I wish I would of invested a book that will help me more in the future. It was an easy read, I read most of it on my lunch hour one day.It was a comfort to have and help me visualize what the race would be like. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A fun and informative read
As a former teammate of Brads, I enjoyed reading of his antics and career moves in the sport. He writes well and conveys his message nicely. I'm looking forward to the sequel. Keep up the good work Brad!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect too much from this book.
As with most books written by athletes, this book reeks of self-obsession.I had to put it down multiple times because I got so tired of reading about how good, smart, deserving, etc., he was.Contrary to many of the reviews on this site, it doesn't reveal anything particularly hilarious, stunning, or even that insightful.I'm not sure what I was expecting to get out of this book, but on the whole it was quite a disappointment.Buy it used or make sure you can sell it to someone else for a few bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to the Sport
Yes, this book is written for children at the elementary school level or slightly above who are just becoming familiar with the sport. Definitely not for anyone currently participating in triathlons and looking to further their knowledge or to uncover new techniques. In that respect, I think this is a solid introduction to our sport and one that may encourage more folks to get involved, especially at the very youngest levels. If the purpose of this book is to raise awareness of our sport, than I applaud it for its effort and success.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for a Triathlete's Child
This is a 60 page picture book, without very good pictures. It's probably a good book for a library to have in the Children's section, however if you're actually old enough to do a triathlon, then this book is not for you. An actual caption next to one of the pictures: "Goggles and a swim cap are essential for the swimming portion of the triathlon." Hmmm. What a gem. Also good: "A triathlon is composed of three events: swimming, biking, and running." Really. Another caption. P.6. Not making it up.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are in any way into endurance sports....
I love this book. I was amazed to learn it is out of print. Jeff Cook does an amazing job of taking you inside the life and minds of the greatest athletes in the world. If you are looking for inspiration or motivation of the athletic sort, read this book. I was awestruck at Jeff's ability to extract the emotion and intensity of these athletes. This book was part of an Olympic display at my local library, at the time I was training for my first marathon and thought it would be a great way to boost my motivation, boy did it ever. I found myself having to find seats on the train to work that were out of the way due to my constant tearing, it is that good. I have never competed in a triathlon but since the reading of this book have purchased 3 Ironman videos (I'm addicted) and one day plan to do one. If you are in any way into endurance sports and love to read stories about those who push the body to the physical limit, this one's for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A inspirational biography

4-0 out of 5 stars a classic
This book is key in begining a triathlon lifestyle. The calculations that are required for the year-round training program seem labourous but once you get started, it is well worth your time. The section on bike maintenance is simple and includes most everything to make you feel like you've been doing the sport for years.Great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
This is a good book for everyone thinking about triathlons. It offers good advice on choosing equipment, techniques and training programs.5-0 out of 5 stars it works
I'm a new transition to triathlons. This book works well for me because I'm prepared to accept the information the book has to offer. Theinformation is objective and the training methods presented appear wellorganized with technical reasoning backing up the new concepts I learnedhere. I feel the author is genuinely concerned about the readers successand therefore disagree with other reviewers comments' that the there is toomuch (unnecessary) training. My thoughts on this matter are thatTriathletes need a sufficient amount of training to efficiently compete andI think once again the author backs up the reasons why the training isimportant . My interpretation of the general training outline presented isthat this will prepare one well for the stresses of half ironmancompetition, but one can adjust up or down from there to suit their racingneeds. For a 1994 copyright, this book is well worth the money because thefacts, figures, and methods being used appear to be genuine by even today'sstandards. If you wish to find something exactly for you please visit yourlocal full service health club and pay several hundred dollars for agenuine taylored plan, this is a serious statement for those beingextremely serious about this sport. But for the novice like me, this booktells me everything I need to know at this point. See you on the coursefriends... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GO GO GO!
This is the first book I ever read about triathlons and it got me kick-started into the sport. It is clear, precise and exceptionally motivating. What helps me the most is the advice on how to divide up the workouts by week and how much emphasis to place on each sport. When this book was first published, LSD (long, slow distance!) was the keyword and this book helped me to develop that in my training and not get discouraged. It made me, an average middle-of-the-pack athlete, feel like a winner! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Total Triathlon Almanac-5
The Total Triathlon Almanac-5 is the best training log I have used in my 30 plus years as an endurance athlete and coach. It is actually much more than just a training log. It's a valuable training tool, packed with training and racing tips from Mark Allen, Dave Scott and several other all-time triathlon greats. This information, combined with Tony Svensson's inspiring photos, make the Almanac-5 a great source of motivation as well. This is simply the most comprehensive training logbook and resource available.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Just when you thought it couldnt get better!
I have intensively used the Almanac 3, 4 and now just got 5 off the presses! It is truly an amazing work. I was thinking of sending the author suggestions but all my suggestions have made it into the new book! Unlike a lot of other triathlon resource guides, the info is easy to understand but provides enough depth to make it really useful. Also, you can tell that a great deal of thought - from a real athlete - has gone into the structure of the log pages.
