4-0 out of 5 stars my favorite log
I'm in my 4th season of triathlon (go SeaTri!) about to do my first marathon. I've tried other logs with more boxes to fill in but they're too customized to someone else, I like that this is a pretty unstructured format. I tried making my own but I made it 8.5x11 and it was too unweildy, so I've come back to this log again and I actually use it.I like the week totals, it's very satisfying to see my marathon training milage ramp up. In the review section I put reminders like gear I need to replace or drinks that did or didn't work for me. I follow their recommendation of drawing a diagonal line across days I didn't work out and it gives a good quick sense of whether or not I'm slacking. My biggest drawback is I have messy handwriting (keyboard junkie ;-) so I have trouble staying between the small lines.I could go digital, but I like that this can kick around in my closet by my gear. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Skip this one...
I was not impressed.Even as a newcomer to triathlons, the book helped very little. It had some motivation, but there are far better books for that out there, and very little useful training advice.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful information, but not a complete reference
I noticed that many reviewers commented that this book was too geared towards beginners however, as a beginner myself, I found the book lacking. There is a lot of useful information and advice in general, but I was not able to read the book and start a practical training program. Most of the training advice is very generalized, and after reading it I still had no clue where to start.I was recently at a beginner women's triathlon clinic and I found that several participants agreed with me, and they recommended the book Slow Fat Triathlete which I have yet to read.I have referred to Edwards' chapters on techniques in all three sports and race day preparation, but beginners will need more than just this book to get started. I have recommended Eric Harr's Triathlon Training In Four Hours a Week to my friends and I am anxiously awaiting the publication of Joe Friel's Your First Triathlon. So overall, not a bad book, but just not enough information to really jumpstart your triathlon training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I am doing my first triathlon and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. It has great training tips, including diagrams for all events and how to improve your fitness level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YES! It Works!
Follow up from Austan Goolsbee in the other review--This book absolutely gives you enough training to finish. I did an olympic distance following the plan and then a half-ironman following the plan.I cannot thank Tom Holland enough. He makes things possible that eveyone else would tell you would basically require you to give up your job and all your hobbies to accomplish.I even tracked down Holland's email address and sent him a profuse thank you.I told him he made triathlon achievable for the "rest of us."If you are thinking about triathlon, you should buy this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you want to train for a triathlon
This book has really been great. It breaks down information about gear and each aspect of a triathlon.I love the packing list! The training program is broken down into one or two sports per day. There are training programs for based on the length and intensity of the triathlon you plan to do (Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, and Ironman). There are pictures and descriptions of stretches and the strength training exercises. I finished my first triathlon with no problems and I'm looking forward to my next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 12-week triathlete plan is a successful one!
Tom Holland's book "The 12-Week Triathlete" helped prepare me to finish my first Ironman.I followed Mr. Holland's plan including the strength training program and I arrived race morning healthy and stronger than I've felt before any other race. Not only was this book informative, but it was also a very easy and enjoyable book to read.I highly recommend it because hearing the announcer follow your name with the words "You are an Ironman" is a feeling like none other in the world and I truly believe that Mr. Holland's book helped me get to the finish line where I could hear those words. Thanks Mr. Holland for a great book!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For Girls Who Tri Also!!
What an absolutely terrific book!Michael Pate has written such a motivational book with, "When Big Boys Tri."It is outstanding and a GREAT book for ALL triathletes - big boys, little boys, big girls...(well, you get the idea)
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Just received this book as a gift and wished I would have found it several months ago.It removed all my doubts and reservations about entering my first triathlon.Doesn't deal with training, but gives a personal view that is honest and open about the fears that most face whether we are fat or thin.I am going to recommend it to my friends that are ready to get off...and start training.

2-0 out of 5 stars lacks supstance
Was excited to receive the book, but a little dis-appointed after reading it.The book is a quick history of a person starting training and the participatin in some triathlons. It was good to know the story, but not a book if you are looking for solid training tips or motivation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever Written About Triathlon
Whenever I found it tough to head out for a run, or wake up early for a swim, I could easily count on this book for motivation. So much, in fact, that I couldn't read it before going to bed or else I'd be too fired-up to sleep!!As a former cometitor at the Hawaii Ironman, this book captures so much of the aura and intangibles of the race and the mindset of those that compete there. While it may have been written many years ago, what it's about is timeless (plus, the beginnings of Hawaii Ironman specifically and the sport of triathlon in general are not only inspiring but extremely interesting).Mike Plant does a fantastic job putting onto paper so many of the unexplainable aspects of endurance and does so in historically accurate and very well written prose. It's inspiring and it's tough to put down, even after you've read it once.I've read the book probably 20 times over the years and it's still a great book that you can just pick up, open to a random page, and read a bit until your batteries are recharged. It's out of print so they're hard to find, especially since those who have their own copy hold on to them forever.Enjoy!

2-0 out of 5 stars 1980's Triathlon description
This book is basically a re-release of the book Mike Plant wrote 15 yearsago. The people he writes about have not competed in a long, long time. Mark Allen is merely an up and comer here, rather than the reigning (nowretired) champion we all remember him to be today. The author defends thisre-release indicating that the only changes he has perceived areessentially the crowds, the bike technology and the advanced trainingregimens.OK, I liked reading the book to learn about the history anddetails of the race and now know my body probably could not survive theheat of the run.Nevertheless, I would have appreciated an update on thisworld famous event, rather than this attempt to cash in on an old work, with minimal input.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still a Great Read
After all these years, Mike Plant's book still captures extremely well howthe Hawaii Iron Man evolved from a death-defying challenge that nobodybelieved could be raced, to a full-fledged professional championship racethat could be fought to the wire by men and women who made that day in Konathe focus of each year. Especially revealing are the author's portraits ofIronman legends Dave Scott and Scott Tinley. Having been taken by Plantinto ST's mental and physical preparation for the race year after year, Ifinished the book feeling a little sorry that Tinley never beat Scotthead-to-head in Kona.Much like an Ironman race, the book for me startedout a bit conservatively, perhaps unsure how to approach the subject best. But once the setting and the characters fell in place, Plant's narrativemoved a lot faster, much like a race that had begun to build in drama.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Revised Edition is useless
A diary is supposed to allow me to record my personal information.By adding the irrelevant photos and so-called motivational quotes, they have reduced the space for my personal information even further.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good diary, cannot write on flap!!
I am a new multi-sport athlete who LOVES to collect data. This diary is perfect; it doesn't provide tons of space for each day, which forces me to think about what I really want to include. My main complaint - it has an outside flap, on which you are to write your goals and objectives. I have tried many different pens and cannot get any to write on the foolish thing, so I have HALF of each of my goals and objectives on the flap and then they trail off to nothing. Less than motivational!3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but used to be better
I've been using the Inside Triathlon journal for 4 or 5 years, and have been pleased with it.The most recent edition, however, has a new format that I just don't like. The editors stuck goofy pictures at the top of each page, and took space away from the notes section. There is now hardly enough room to even describe my route, let alone describe the workout in any meaningful way.I am so disappointed that I doubt I'll buy this journal again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Triathlon 101
Excellent beginners books for those preparing to enter this sport. This book is just what i was looking for, given all the questions I had surrounding Triathlon training. The input given in the book on the equipment recommendations proved useful in pointing me in the right direction.A great buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Triathlon
This was the first book on Triathlon racing and training that I bought - several years ago.Its a well-written introduction to the sport and to training. An easy read, it covers all the basics - swim technique, biking mileage and the ever popular run.
2-0 out of 5 stars skimpy on details
I really can't recommend this book.I'm training for my first triathlon so consider myself a newbie -- but this book did ~not~ gve me the info I need.Advice like "wear a helmet", "drink lots of fluids"... duh!!! - my 8 year old son knows that. The author recommends to get help elsewhere on swimming and cycling techniques because the details are beyond the scope of the book.I don't need a book for this kind of advice!I read another older book (can't remember the name at the moment) which gave good solid advice -- even for a newbie like myself. The mechanics of the freestyle stroke ~can~ be explained in simple terms by someone who understands and knows how to write. In short: too much filler, not enough meat. That said, it was not a total waste -- I was able to glean some facts obliquely referenced in the text. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into teen angst
Ironman is an insightful fictional study into what makes teens behave badly. It raises questions about parenting styles and explores the reason why some teens act up. The protaganist's quest to be an 'ironman' in a gruelling triathlon is the reason for the title in the book. It is a good read in a sometimes tongue-in-cheek style.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ironman Review
Ages 16 and up. Bo Brewster let his anger get the best of him. He finds himself in Mr. Nak's Anger Management class filled with people who are bulleys, future American Gladiators, and people who have problems at home. Bo fits in this class well because he also has problems at home. Bo is training like crazy throughout the school year for Yukon Jack's triathlon. He meets Shelly, from his Anger Management class, and falls in love with her. She helps him train for the race. She even puts 500 dollars on Bo against Wyrack's relay team. Will Bo crack under the pressure of the race and the money or will he rise to the occasion?
2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the literate child.
The language used by the author in my opinion is vulgar and not necessary to tell his tale. It teaches that rude and crude behavior is accepted in the struggle to succeed. Rather than encourage foul language as the norm, Crutcher should try to educate by using BIG words himself rather than resort to base and inferior words tomake his characters seem hip - cool doesn't cut it when it comes to learning proper words and how to use them.

4-0 out of 5 stars In Depth material
This book may not suit a beginner or first timer triathlete...but after saying that...there are wonderful bits and pieces that would be helpful. But reading it from beginning to end would be too detailed for those just wanting to get to the finish line (I recommend "triathlon 101").
5-0 out of 5 stars Dave Scott's Book has it ALL....
When I first decided to start training for the Half-Ironman, I browsed through Amazon and ordered about 10 different books. This is absolutely one of my favorites.3-0 out of 5 stars Better books out there
In much of this book, there is a very strong emphasis on exactly what worked for Dave Scott. This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, and in some cases isn't, but I find it more helpful to hear the coach's perspective as opposed to the athelete's perspective. The reason why this is important is because a coach will very often know the difficulties that wide ranges of people face during triathlon training while the athelete really only has to deal with his own challenges. The other thing to note is that the information is a little dated.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not funny at all
I think the other reviewers must be related to the author.I bought this book on a whim and haven't so much as chuckled once.Save your money - or better yet, write your own book based on your personal triathlon experiences... that's all this is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swim, Bike, Run, Laugh!
If you are looking for what runs in the soul of an Ironman to be...you have the right book.I read this book on my way back from finishing the San Diego 1/2 marathon and could immediately feel the training pains of the author. The training, explaining to my wife the increasing cost of harware I "must have," and the time invested to support my next phase of the triathlon building block - the duathlon hit home.I am where Dave was on "do I swim or drown thoughts".Turning the switch to become a Triathlete let alone a Ironman is a mighty switch to pull. Dave-good for you!Keep it up and one day you may see me - probably at the second transition when you are finishing.Just smile and urge me on; I know it was from the heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you hate laughing....don't read this book!
Whether you are a multi-sport enthusiast or not, this book is for you.Everyday so many people do "multi-sport" activities in their daily lives. If you juggle work and kids, if you juggle being a stay at home mom with kids, if you juggle career and volunteer activities, or if you are an amateur or elite triathlete, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!

1-0 out of 5 stars Also disappointing
Like a previous reviewer I was also disappointed by the content of the book.Made up of articles (albeit slightly changed) appearing in magazines, this book provided nothing new or indepth or of a different viewpoint from other fitness/cycling/triathlon books.I wouldn't recommend to buy it.Coffee book material it is.if you want to get anything out of it and apply it to any training, then this isn't the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection
Sure this book may be a little basic for the super-experienced racers, but I think athletes of all ability levels will be able to glean some valuable tips from this volume.A great leisurely read and the training ideas have helped me immensley.Chris and CTS continue to impress.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reprinted articles without technical substance
I'm very disappointed in this book. The vast majority of the book are reprints from "Velo News" and "Inside Triathlon" with subtle changes. This is nice bathroom reading but hardly helpful with any actual training advice.Perhaps I had the wrong idea of the content. When I get my training program far enough along to look back in retrospect at what a great idea adopting the CTS philosophy was then maybe I'll pick this book up again and privately commiserate with the contributing authors that have had success. If your looking for a "How to" guide to putting together a training program then I would not recommend this book.If your like me and need help getting a structured approach to training then I'd recommend "The Triathlete's Training Bible" by Joe Friel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Puts You At Ease
Reading Roman Mica's book makes one feel at ease.He writes humbly about the experiences he's had and silly mistakes he's made, and he writes it in a way that keeps your attention. This will put anyone at ease who worries that they "can't" do a triathlon, or worries about not being athletic enough to compete in amateur athletics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too old to become a Triathloner...
Oh no, I will not become in my seventieth a Triathloner after reading R. Mica's book. I am quite content to do swimming, biking, running as separate activities without packaging them together in one frightening act. As you figured out I don't race anymore in either one of those sports, anyway. This said I am grateful to the author for bringing me back the memories of
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Funny Look at the Sport of Triathlon
If you've ever raced a tri or thought about racing one, you'll love this book. It's a series of essays about one man's experience with triathlon. The author has a great, self-effacing sense of humor, and if you've ever done a tri you know how it is an athletic event with lots of potential for disaster.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry Scott
Sorry Scott; I wanted to like this book. I have read pretty much everything you have written and will probably continue to do so, despite this book. Why? Because of all you have done that I can only dream of. And read of thanks to you. But with "Racing the Sunset" you have tried to go into creative non-fiction and take us beyond your experiences. Good on ya! But gee Scott, it really needs another re-write. It reads like a not-quite-finished draft. I don't know if this is a problem of editing, as another reviewer has suggested, or of writing. Read Bill McKibben's "Long Distance" if you haven't already and please keep writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy reading
I've been a Tinley fan (as a writer) for years and looked forward to reading this.It provided an excellent insight into Scott Tinley, and the way that he's approached his triathlon, and life. The way that he contrasts his ups and downs is excellent. The talks with other athletes and the empathy shown with other retired athletes speaks volumes to the character of the man.5-0 out of 5 stars rebel with a cause
before you can race the sunset, you first need to get a jump on dawn, and mr. san diego has been racing the rosy-fingered hues of early mornings for two decades as he defined, shaped, sculpted this athletic calling now known as triathlon. as the founder of tri-athlete magazine, i used to resent the fact that this bona-fide beach boy with cornflower silk hair and chiseled bod knew how to write--and write well. "jocks" shouldn't be known as true authors. tinley, the man he describes in this heartfelt confessional memoir, is still testing himself against seen and unseen obstacles.the memoir is both a trip down memory lane in the aero tucked position and a homage to the retired jock syndrome (rjs). every athlete must face that time in his or her life when age takes its toll. but that is not a call for surrender. tinley doesn't go DNF on us. nor does he want to. his writing the book was an act of courage--a private correspondence with a very public self. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Triathlon/Duathlon
I love this book because it gives you a normal everyday mojo's perspective on triathlons and duathlons.I recommend it to anyone who is a beginner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date!
I didn't realize how out of date this book was, or I would not have bought it.The book makes 80s-era references when it comes to diet, nutrition, and other books about fitness. He suggests that you'd better plan to spend a whole $45 dollars on a good pair of running shoes!
4-0 out of 5 stars A good start!
This book is a great way to enter the world of triathlon. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because it is slightly incomplete and references other books. However, I think anyone who really gets into tris will find that this is generally the case. Glad I found this book to get me started! Oh, and regarding Miles vs. Minutes: Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'll go with the Minutes system since world champions Mike Pigg and Mark Allen swear by it and I would be wary of the disparagement of this method from someone who has never done a triathlon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read about triathlons
This book is very easy to read.Christina has done an excellent job compiling articulate women (pro triathletes, exercise specialists, nutritionists, psychologists, coaches, etc.) to give their expertise on the varying components of training for a triathlon. There are specific drills for each sport as well as training regimens to follow from a sprint to an ironman triathlon. Not only does she cover the physical components of training, but also the mental and nutritional aspects.I have read other books on triathlons, but this is the first book I read where I wanted to get off the plane and jump into the training program immediately.I've been competing for a couple years and learned more from this book than from a camp I attend. Another aspect I appreciated about this book, is everything about it is written from, and for, females.I found myself reading it and feeling empowered by other women and their levels of accomplishment. There are lots of examples and illustrations in this book to keep the reader interested and informed. It's a fun, educational, well-written read.Kudos to Christina and her editorial skills. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Autobiography, sports psychology, and short training tips
After providing a brief autobiography Mark Allen, who does not seem the slightest bit arrogant, recounts the few days of and before Ironman Hawaii '87.The book clearly shows that Allen spends a lot of timesports-psychoanalyzing himself and his competitors (contrasting DaveScott's seemingly machine like approach to racing.)The intimatedescription of IH '87 is interesting. The end of the book provides brief, but useful training advice incorporating heart rate monitoring.
