5-0 out of 5 stars A book that really EXPLAINS flexibility
As someone who has never been flexible and couldn't figure out why (I always thought something was just wrong with me), I was truly delighted to find this book. Lesser books show models falling into position as if it were pleasant and easy, with no real narrative of what it might feel like to an adult just starting to work on this. Yet even as a youngster I couldn't sit on the floor with my legs straight out and did not understand why it was so hard for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is not intimidating
This book shows you how to progress in your stretching. There is always a basic stretch and then an advance stretch. This book does not assume that you are already flexible. Many of the stretches are good for people who are not atheletes and just want to improve their general flexibility. However, atheletes will be well served by the advanced stretches. The narration is good and replaces an instructor well. The book even goes into common errors that people experience with particular stretches so that you can avoid those mistakes and improve your technique.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to read once but not an investment item
I am a Pilates instructor.Although I am familiar with a lot of stretches due to my dance background, I wanted to find a book that gave me more ideas and could act as a reference book. This book repeats many of the same stretches.I don't think it has enough pictures for the user to follow along with the instructions.I tried two of the neck and shoulder stretches on my clients and they didn't find them helpful and neither did I. ... Editorial Review

Help your butt say "neener neener!" to Father Time. Join some of Hollywood's best bodies (Jamie Lee Curtis, Danny Glover) who've gone gaga over the Pilates method of body conditioning. (It's intriguingly referred to as "the method" for short). Celebrities, professional athletes, dancers, and models drop $50 or more for each private lesson on the Pilates equipment (which includes contraptions with potentially dangerous-looking straps and springs, with intimidating names like the Cadillac and the Reformer). If you'd rather not shell out cash like that to help your rear defy gravity--especially when at least three classes a week are recommended--take heart. Mari Winsor, one of L.A.'s most popular Pilates instructors, has brilliantly collected the essential exercises--none of which requires any equipment other than perhaps a carpeted floor--into a supremely inspiring, snappily written, simple-to-follow handbook, perhaps the perfect book for new moms, business travelers looking to stay fit while on the road, and the swimsuit-phobic alike.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Pilates Introduction
I like this book because Mari includes in the back of the book many exercises people can do BEFORE they begin the more intensive exercises. There are entire sections for people with "bad" necks, backs, and asthma in the back of the book-- these exercises are instrumental in preparing you to do the regular exercises. The book has a compassionate note in this respect, and it's helpful to know that Mari brought herself back from not being able to walk (because of an auto accident) using the Pilates in this book AND the beginning exercises in the back of the book. This may be why she is so good at getting people started in small steps. I've looked at other Pilates books, and they all seem to assume that everyone is ready to launch right into the Pilates routine. People who reviewed this book and thought that there were no beginning exercises must have missed the last thirty or so pages of this book (and the table of contents)! For people like me who always feel a bit rushed by the videos, this book works well because I can take my time and re-read the instructions to make sure I'm paying attention to all of the details of the movements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Build your core!
This book is my favorite pilates book, hands down. It begins with a history of Pilates, then goes directly into "the hundred," the first workout. No special equipment is required and you don't have to be a Hollywood star to have good results. My sisters and I ALL use Mari's method and range from size 3 to 5 at over 5'4" each. Before, we ranged from 6 (soft) to 12.Keep in mind, this is a TONING workout. For aerobic activity, you'd want to do Mari's "Fat-Burning Workout," swim, dance, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get it...do it...
If you want to get in shape, if you want to feel strong, if you want to have an easy book to follow, get this one. It will make you strong, you don't need a gym, and you can do all the exercises in your living room. Get yourself a lot of self drive and motivation and go for it. You will, however, have to supplement this challenging workout with something aerobic. It will not take off all the inches all by itself. Remember that eating less, burning more is the secret to any weight loss program. This program will burn your calories but not enough to get you to look like Baywatch by June. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good stocking stuffer for the yoga enthused!
This is a tiny book about basically a chicken performing yoga moves while contemplating the breathing techniques and meditating. Its very cute and it would be a great stocking stuffer this holiday season for any yoga enthusiast.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Ain't No Chicken :-)
I picked up this book recently from a local Target store and couldn't put it down. The poses are enlightening, and the amount of thought put into this book is encredible. The pictures and humor are funny. This is a great beginner's book to yoga. I've enjoyed it very much after I bought it just a few days ago. It truly works! I recommend it for anyone looking for a way to release stress and calm down. It's simply wonderful. :-) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected
I purchased the book based on Dr Weil's endorsement. They may be good personal trainers but the book is impractical.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read, But ...
I bought this book hoping to expand on the strength training program I do at home.I'm a competitive track athlete and am dependent on strength exercises to prevent injury.4-0 out of 5 stars i recommend this book to many clients
the whartons are very experienced and knowledgeable, and i found their descriptions of the exercises totally clear and understandable. This book gave me the ability to feel completely confident that i could work out athome, where i wanted to be. As a massage therapist I often work with muscle injuries. This book is a must have for both therapeutic technique and for client education.I highly reccommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous
Although some of the assisted exercises might work well, I found many of the other stretches inflamed a number of joints after several weeks on this program. The solo stretching exercises seem to be poorly researched.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone interested in stretching
This book gives sufficient physiological background to grasp the very detailed description of the process. The use of photos and written descriptions makes it easy to learn the stretches. 2-0 out of 5 stars Low on theory, low on production values
This book is not nearly as good as the reviews led me to believe. It has no "theory" at all, just an apparently random set of disconnected postures. The production is at the bottom end of commercial products.A number of private jokes among the participants, but not very much for a buyer.

5-0 out of 5 stars just what I needed

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT resource for teachers and students!!
I absolutely love my yoga fan.As a teacher and student, this book is an excellent guide for sequencing and for referencing any pose.I love how the fan is grouped and broken down into seven sections, which offers an easy and flexible sequence to follow. The sections are even color coded to match the postures with the chakras! I never leave home without this book. At any time, I can flip it open for a quick reference. It's also a great companion when traveling - it's small and easy to pack as a guide for my personal practice!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every yogi :)
This is a great little toolfor teachers as well as students (like me!).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Yogi Fan is an excellent Yoga tool.
I've found the Yoga Fan to be a great tool for my individual practice. Developing my home practice is an integral part of my yoga practice, however left to my own devices it's easy enough for me to reinvent poses and confuse or lose sequences; having the Yogi Fan is like having a Yogi in my pocket to guide me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flexibility - yes!Fitness and conditioning - not really...
It is well established that stretching improves agility and quickness of skiers. Resistance exercises strengthen the muscles, but they also shorten them. Stretching makes muscles longer again. This leads to flexibility (greater range of motion in the joints) which allows to get the most out of your training program and helps to ski longer, in better control, with less fatigue. Many books in the past emphasized primarily physical training during off-season period. In the last few years, flexibility and stretches got increasingly large attention. This book is entirely focused on stretches. It contains a well-illustrated 10-20 minute warm-up and stretching routine, and several additional excersises to improve balance. The exercises are very easy, and can be done, e.g., in the morning before work. They help to wake up and to feel better. Additionally, there is a section on warm-up and stretches recommended for the slopes before skiing (partly with the skis on), and a few exercises on skis to improve balance. 5-0 out of 5 stars A trainer gets trained
I'm a personal trainer working in a New York City gym and when a client of mine wanted some exercises for his favorite sport, I did a search and found this book.It has been excellent. All I needed to tailor a program for him, and even exercises he can do on the mountain in full gear.Clear, honest and effective.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I'm a bit skeptical and cautious about most fad exercise programs (like pilates, yoga, etc.) because they weren't created by medical specialists who understand the details of how the body works.I bought this book because it looked like the author knew this information when putting her program together. This lady really knows her stuff from the inside out.I appreciate how this book carefully explains how the body is put together (in very simple terms) and which muscles each exercise works.Believe me, you can feel each specified muscle or muscle group being worked during the exercise!Be careful not to overdo an exercise the first time through or you will learn your anatomy better than you want to (with sore muscles pointing the way).

Having had several joint related injuries from years of weightlifting and triathlon training, I've built a small library on endurance sports, sports medicine and physical therapy. Some books have been helpful for remedying some aspects of an overuse injury, but never has one put it all together into a whole body approach.Renee Daniels is a medical exercise specialist whose approach and method are simple and effective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This is a pretty good book with tons of static and dynamic stretches for all muscle groups. It also contains several different stretching "routines" at the end of the book, which appear valuable.

There are no new ideas or stretches here. Although doing these stretches regularly will work - I was looking for something a little more groundbreaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Use This Book Every Day
I'm middle aged and was ordered by my doctor to exercise. I have to stretch to keep my lower back and shoulders and neck loose and to recover from aerobic exercise. The stretches in this book work to keep me flexible and loose. The descriptions are clear. I find the sets of stretches described in the last portion of the book useful: I do the 10-minute series after using the elliptical trainer and do the 20-minute series on my day off from aerobics. The book is inexpensive and you get very good value for the money. ... Read more

I like the way the author set up the book with a clear introduction of the anatomy and mechanics of stretching. In addition, the use of charts for "sport specific" stretching guidelines is extremely useful. Illustration are clear and easy to understand.

I'm a former couch potato who started doing Tae Bo and cardio kickboxing almost two years ago.I recently added yoga to my routine for flexibility, and pilates for strength and control, but found that I needed more.In particular, I wanted greater flexibility in my adductor muscles so that I could kick higher and with increased control.I found that I was also having some knee problems. So I checked out every book that my local library had on stretching and flexibility; out of the dozen or so books I looked at, I liked three of them, including "Sport Stretch," well enough that I purchased my own copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars user friendly
This book helped with my flexibility and coordination. I like that there are stretches given that I can perform on my board while I am waiting in the line up. I also liked that tubing comes with the book so I don't have to spend time and money at the gym.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's simple, yet effective
I really liked this book, it combines a basic flexibility program and also incorporates simple conditioning exercises used for surfing. I have had a shoulder injury for a while and this book has helped me get my shoulder back in shape for surfing. I also like the rubber tubing so I can exercise anytime.

3-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
This book is alright if you have never spent time in a gym with somebody who knows what they are doing. It's a good place to start but know that there are many more things you can learn. Spend a little dough and invest in a couple of sessions with a personal trainer that can work with you and develop a program for your SPECIFIC goals. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The author sticks to his discipline
Stark's book is criticized here several times, for not addressing mid and upper body muscle groups. If I want advice on what to do about atherosclerosis, I will go see a cardiac specialist. And if I want expert advice for feet and closely associated physiology I will read Stark, because his methods and communication skills are among the best. Unlike some 'experts', Stark does not arrogantly venture beyond the scope of his discipline.
2-0 out of 5 stars limited information
If you're looking for a lot of background on muscle physiology or a very specific method of stretching this book might interest you, but if you're looking for a good selection of stretches, you should be aware that you only get 6 stretches here. I found the title a little misleading, since "every sport" would seem to include tennis, baseball and swimming, but this book only addresses lower body flexibility. If you want to stretch your arms, back, shoulders, etc, you're out of luck here.5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book!
