1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money On This Book
So exactly how much research has the author actually performed on 5K and 10K training?
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I've read every popular book on training for distance runners since 1970 - and many that were published before that. I worked at Runner's World 1972-76; I mention this only because I hope it will lend weight to what I'd like to say about Brian Clarke's <5K and 10K Training>: simply, that it's the best book on the subject I've ever read. No one has talked intelligently about training from the perspective of how a runner Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Track and Field by Gerry Carr
This book is a great resource for the physical education teacher or track and field coach. It has broken down each event into simple to understand stages. The coaching tips are of tremendous value to those who work with athletes. The illustrations that show how to perform each event are excellent for visual learners. Information within this book has been used in the preparation of my athletes.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE
I think this was a very good book.I liked the description of the trails. It was very thorough in how to get to each trail, what to expect when you get there, what to expect during the run, etc.Trails tend to change over time, but the authors picked ones that are pretty stable, so you can be almost assured that when you get there the trail will still be there.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Confidence Builder
A recent resident of Venice, California, I looked out to the Santa Monica mountains from my second story window and wondered where the running trails were. I've bounced around LA over the past few years, running in GriffithPark, Fryman Canyon, Porter Ranch, among other routes, but these newmountains drew me to them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, entertaining, informative

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for the new runner.
I recently read a book about running specifically for women and it was thorough, but gave me too many things to think and worry about. This book is simple, well-written and uses a more common-sense approach to running.Very enjoyable, and very good pictures.

If you are starting a running program, this book is for you.It covers every relevant topic in a clear and interesting manner. In fact, it is surprisingly entertaining for being packed with so much information. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good guide for hardcore dayhikers
I don't run and I don't jog, but I do hike fast. If you like dayhiking more than backpacking, but still want to see cool trails, this is a great guide! He is an excellent writer who keeps the reader intrested and doesn't ramble off onto "memory lane" like a few other guide writers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I haven't found this book very useful as a training aid. There is certainly some useful information here, but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired. Sandrock seems to be more fond of name-dropping than discussing the pros and cons of various training strategies. For instance, should long runs be done at a slow pace ( la Joe "LSD" Henderson), or at a medium/hard pace (Lydiard)? This, and other interesting topics are barely discussed.
4-0 out of 5 stars ready to get serious?
I agree, this book is for serious runners, or runners who are ready to get serious. You are not going to improve that PR by doing the same old thing. I am going to integrate these workout's in to my plan. Sandrock states in his book to build a base first, and be true to your self. None of us is Shorter, or Salazar, adapt it for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars For serious runners
Mike Sandrock follows up his previous chronicles of stud runners with this well done book. Competitive runners will enjoy the chance to see what others profess to doing for their hard sessions. I thought the book gave me good ideas for new workouts to incorporate in my training (although at a slower pace of course.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Change Your Shoes!
My sister ran her first marathon a few years ago and has been trying ever since to get me out of the house and into the gym.Nothing really worked until she handed me this book.I was expecting a beginner's step-by-step guide to training for a marathon. The book does provide very detailed information about how to start training, how to outfit yourself from head to toe, and even includes a week-by-week training guide. What I didn't expect was the personal stories that accompanied the training information. Not only do the authors share their own reasons for running their first marathon, they talk to several other women who relate their personal stories and explain why they felt compelled to take on such anenormous challenge.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
My wife recently decided she wanted to tackle a marathon although she had never run a race of over 10K before in her life. I did some research on the internet and purchased a couple of books for her that focused on women and marathon preparation. My wife liked this book most because it was written from the perspective of two "non-athletes" who, much like her, wanted to take on this challenge but weren't sure where to start.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Incredible!I attended a book signing for Everywomen's Guide on Jekyll Island in July. The authors are just as beautiful as the stories themselves.Talk about inspiring!I was at the book signing for three hours just listening to stories from the book.I wasn't able to purchase a book myself (they had all sold out by the time I got there!!!), so Ms. Vilines read a few excerpts for me and my family.Motivating and inspirational!5 stars from me. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A little condescending...
Lots of useful information, but the author is a little too experienced in marathons and distance-running to be giving advice to beginners. For example, he uses phrases like "only one mile" to talk about runners who, in his words, don't put much effort into their runs. Meanwhile, for me, one mile would be a huge accomplishment, as it would be for anyone who's never ran before (which is who the book purports to be for). It seemed like the author finds runs of less than 30 minutes to be pointless or easy, which of course it is for him, but for novices there should be more encouragement to run any distance that they can.

5-0 out of 5 stars this programme works!
I could not run (very slowly, more a jog) for one minute then got this book. It has a four week programme designed to get you running for 30 minutes in that time span and it works. Now I'm doing the programme again to encourage my husband and I'm running even faster this time. Buy it and try it. It works.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Silence of Great Distance
This book has two levels to it, the first being a historical review of the sport of women's distance running. The real gold here is however what insight is revealed in following the career of Stephanie Herbst during her career at the University of Wisconsin. The dedication and motivation of Ms Herbst and others like her and the dangers of both external and internally generated pressure to perform are an eye opener. The last few chapters especially are extremely powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensible history
Professor Murphy has created the rarest of works, an unlikely combination of literary nonfiction and sports history. I know of no other work on women's sport, particularly running, that offers such depth and breadth. A must for anyone interested in running, the history of women in athletics, and the Title IX era.

5-0 out of 5 stars Murphy Doesn't Miss a Thing
Frank Murphy does not miss a thing in this book on women long distance runners.I myself am one and not only did he accurately portray the stresses a female runner puts on herself and has forced on her by others and the sport itself but he also provided factual and intriguing statistics about such legends as Mary Decker, Doris Brown, and Suzy Favor Hamilton.I could not put this book down. This true story desperately needed to be told, and no one could have done it better or more completely. ... Editorial Review

Almost two decades after its original publication and more than fifteen yearsafter its author retired from the New York Knicks to become a United States senator, this account of twenty days in a pro basketball season remains aclassic in the literature of sports, unparalleled in its candor and intelligence. Bill Bradley is also the author of Time Present, Time Past, a memoir of his years in the U.S. Senate. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Kind of dry
He writes about being in the NBA but it's during the 70's when it was so different from now. Players didn't make mega millions then. I can't believe they would still have to do their own laundry and share a hotel room with someone on the team. But it's a nice glimpse into the 70's and professional basketball, I guess. The basketball writing is okay, I've read much better. His writing is pretty dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal
After reading John McPhee's account of Bill Bradley's years at Princeton, I put the book down and thought it was too good to be true. No NBA player I've ever seen is THAT smart. But after reading Bradley's own Life on the Run, I recant. Bradley IS that smart, and he's a hell of a writer to boot. This one can be spoken about with the same kind of respect due the classic sports profiles, including McPhee's own Levels of the Game. I'm glad I took a chance on this book. It was a real pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read
Bill Bradley's account of three weeks in the life of an NBA team in the '70's is as much a stunningly insightful social commentary as it is a nice, easily-rambling, "On the Road"-style ride. Beautiful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Running Staple that is Timeless
This narrative by George Sheehan transcends running. Although it is 'sport-specific', Dr. Sheehan has shown us the 'Way', and he does it simplistically. This book should be read by all atheletes, regardless of their particular sport. He is telling us something here...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for experienced runners
The book is interesting, and well written. It contains little unique or scarcely known or understood information. Novice runners might like it and get more from it than experienced runners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for experienced runners
I bought this book thinking that it would tell me about breathing and running. Sort of what you would expect from the title.
5-0 out of 5 stars A highly practical, health-conscious wellness guide
