5-0 out of 5 stars New to Physical Fitness? Hope In A Book!
I absolutely love this book! Yes, some of the advice is common sense and trite but as the old cliche goes "If sense were common..."I've never been a runner before and I began working with my trainer to work towards a new fitness goal and she suggested running.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
This is a great book whether you are new to running or have been running for some time. I felt as though I was talking to a friend. I found it to be a quick read and very motivating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Chatty but good...for beginners
While it seems that many readers enjoy the conversational tone of this book, I found it to be frustrating. I didn't find the personal anecdotes to be that motivating, frankly. And some of them were downright boring (do I really need to be told that I can wear a watch while running to help me keep track of the time like the author does? Surely I could have figured that out on my own?). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Log With Great Charts and Info
My husband and I have been using this log for nine years. Two new logs are our annual new year's present to each other. One year he tried a different one, another year I tried a different one, but we both find this log to have the best format, charts, extra info, etc.If you don't keep a log, try it.You'll be amazed at how helpful and interesting it is to have a diary of your runs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best training diary on the market
I'm now placing my order for my sixth consecutive yearly training diary. It's easy to use, attractively designed and there's plenty of room for recording your daily runs. I use all the charts in the back: the week-by-week mileage chart, the training mileage graph, record of races, pr chart. The pacing charts and race time comparison and predictor charts are indispensable (yes, you can find this info on the web, but it's great to have right here in the book for when you are traveling). 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Finally, a logbook that has charts for the slower runners of this world! Somebody finally realizes that not everybody runs a 9:00 minute mile!Thank you! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy Manual for Runners of All Levels
Regardless of your running level, this concise collection of essays addresses many issues and will surely provide useful information and inspiration from which the runner can pick and choose.Interesting and informative, it will reinforce or realign your current regimen with clarity and effective advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
I learned several new stretches and ways to add a little bit more efficiency to my running style.Very Helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the chapters - pick and choose what you think is important
This is not a traditional training book like Daniels or Coe and Martin, nor is it one of the scores of "Explain Everything About Running to the Beginner" books out there.Instead, it focuses on the aspects of training with which even experienced runners may be unfamiliar. For example, it discusses lifting weights, stretching, dietary concerns, etc. in addition to topics directly related to running such as peaking for a race, improving leg speed, addressing long-term aerobic development, multi-pace training, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read about triathlons
This book is very easy to read.Christina has done an excellent job compiling articulate women (pro triathletes, exercise specialists, nutritionists, psychologists, coaches, etc.) to give their expertise on the varying components of training for a triathlon. There are specific drills for each sport as well as training regimens to follow from a sprint to an ironman triathlon. Not only does she cover the physical components of training, but also the mental and nutritional aspects.I have read other books on triathlons, but this is the first book I read where I wanted to get off the plane and jump into the training program immediately.I've been competing for a couple years and learned more from this book than from a camp I attend. Another aspect I appreciated about this book, is everything about it is written from, and for, females.I found myself reading it and feeling empowered by other women and their levels of accomplishment. There are lots of examples and illustrations in this book to keep the reader interested and informed. It's a fun, educational, well-written read.Kudos to Christina and her editorial skills. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Hopeful!
My husband, age 67 with Parkinson's, spotted a mention of the author John Ball in his monthly Runner's Magazine. We "googled" John and found this book. Since my husband is a runner he related tremendously with John and was very uplifted by reading his book. This story stresses the benefits of both exercise and community in battling Parkinson's Disease. A good read, especially for anyone interested in running.I am not, but wanted to share the book with my husband. I'm glad I did as John is all about not only hope, but enthusiam for life. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Much Trail-Running-Specific Stuff in Here ...
Gotta say, I was quite disappointed with this book. I am a novice runner who is thinking about getting into trail running -- and I'm also an experienced hiker, climber, etc. I was expecting this book to talk to me about the details of trail running, but instead, it dwells over-long on just being in the backcountry -- just like any other hiking book, but not as well as the best of that genre. So ... I returned it.

5-0 out of 5 stars everything i wanted to knowabout trail running
I love jumping into new sports but always manage to wind up with a million tedious questions. As a relatively new trail runner, this book answers what I want to know about training for ultras. Now I feel confident that I can bypass the ... personal trainer route AND talk about more interesting things than mileage with my fellow trail running friends. What a relief, all around I'm sure. Too bad it wasn't out 6 months ago when I needed to pick out shoes and started training for my first marathon! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the hardcore
An excellent book for the intensely commited young (college through mid-30's) runner. Anyone else would need to reduce both the number and possibly the intensity of the workouts. If you're a mid-pack runner or wish to complete marathons, this book would be of little value to you. If on the other hand you think of 20 x 400 as a normal workout during the track phase of the season, consider adding it to your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good motivator
I bought this book as a person who could already run about 20 minutes without stopping, mainly because I wanted something for motivation to keep me going and increasing my time. The book starts you at 10 minutes a day, so I just added 5 minutes to each day since I could already run that far.The book actually encourages you to personalize its program, adding or subtracting time as you need to, or even starting with a walk-run program for those who have never run before. The book is designed to be read one day at a time, though I read the whole thing in a couple days, then went back through and reread each section on the particular day I did that run.5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific guide to running!
I love this book. I could barely run two minutes without stopping, but somehow being told to run 10 minutes gave me the mental push to actually do it. I soon learned that the first 10 minutes are always the hardest. Once you get past those 10 minutes, your body is warmed up and your breathing becomes more relaxed, and you can go a lot longer. If you expect it to be easy, then maybe running isn't for you. But if you're serious about becoming a runner, this book is for you. Although I was close to 50 pounds overweight when I started the book, I was able to follow it religiously. I just wish he had another one for the next 90 days. I guess it's time for me to start his 4 hour marathon book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Running!
This book is so great! I was looking for a book that didn't start you out with a walk/run combonation (because i already did that). Instead I wanted a book that would start you running right away. I think this book was just what I was looking for. It takes you through each day and it gives you tips for each day and also acts as a running log.To those who are seriously out of shape right now I would recommend you start with even a smaller segment of time or try 10 minutes of walk/running first, because the first day you are suppose to run 10 minutes straight (which can be a little tough at first). I challenge anyone to give this book a try, it's really awesome! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A
Issues in the business world and how running helped him deal with those issues were very well articulated.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Not About the Running Shoes
"What would I do if I knew I only had one day left to live?" writes Dean Ottati in a key passage of this book (p. 223). The answer he says, is that he would start by going out to run. "During that run, I would smell each smell, the roses and the horse droppings, with equal joy. I would listen to the leaves rustling in the trees, and I would watch the red-winged blackbirds against bright yellow mustard flower . . . . I would run up the Mauler [hill] one last time. And I would thank it for remaining such a consistent challenge over the years."4-0 out of 5 stars Zen and the Art of Running
The promo says it's in the spirit of Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - and it is.Ottati wrote a thoughtful and inspiring book for all runners, as well as thinkers who want to be runners (or vice versa).Of course, if you are both a thinking and a runner, it's perfect and easy to get into.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Senses at attention...
Mr. Shapiro is a storyteller. The journey runner Bob Dylan.Slick Rick.Johnny Cash. His words captivate and affect.Brush strokes drawn from the experiencial pallete of a colorful character, they allow others toaccompany him on a journey of self-exploration and realization.Having hadthe good fortune of knowing Mr. Shapiro - he was my grade school teacher,cross-country and track coach and remains my friend and mentor - I expectedsomething deep and real from the record of his transcon run.As usual themodest poet and philosopher left me marveling at his feats of body andmind, inspired to rise to my own.Beauty at its essence, Meditations islike a clear pool on an overcast day.If you look at it long enough youwill see not only the surface but what lies beneath.Look again and youmay find that you too are dancing with the soft water.I highly recommendMeditations From the Breakdown Lane to any and all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent account of a transcon run
I have read Shapiro's book several times. It details the very dispute that goes through his head as he runs 40+ miles per day from Coast to Coast. His book helped inspire me to run across the country as well andhis words were with me each day. An excellent book well worth finding. ... Read more

This book was good in the sense it was easy to read, and offered good advice. The perspective of the elite athlete (The author) was interesting and enlightening. The training plans are detailed and the book is quick and easy to read. I wouldn't recommend this be the only book you read to prepare for a marathon, but it is a good compliment to other books while your training, to help keep you focused. ... Read more
