4-0 out of 5 stars Great for 1998
This was a very useful book when I bought it in 1999 to pick a marathon for 2000.Now, given how many marathons have changed their routes, increased their support, cancelled, etc., it's become outdated.I don't think there's a new edition out yet--I wish there was.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent guide, just a little out of date
"The Ultimate Guide to Marathons" is an excellent marathon resource for runners. This second edition was published in 1998 with information current up through 2000.A runner using this book as a guide needs to know that in five years a lot can change for a given marathon.A good example of this is the poorly managed Lakeshore Marathon in Chicago which recently had an issue of the course being measured incorrectly and being a mile too long.Information like this would be critical in any new edition of "The Ultimate Guide to Marathons".However, if you are able to accept this potential shortcoming of slightly out of date information and use this book as exactly what the title says, a "guide", then any runner can find a lot of value in this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference - Needs Updating
I found the book to be a good reference, but I wish I had a later revision. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Appendix to "Daniel's Running Formula"
If Jack Daniel's book is the bible of running, this book is a close second. Clear, concise, and with good training tables, this book is a nice tweak on Daniel's book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Train smarter, train easier
Pfitzinger's book finally delivers on what I always want from a book on a complex subject, simple explanations and simple solutions. Why write 800 pages when 188 will suffice. If you are only looking to train for 5K's then you can skip the section on 10K and marathon training and get even more concise explanations. This book gives short, simple explanations to the key elements of a training program. We now know everything we need to know about VO2 max and lactate threshold training, their relative importance, how to improve them and how to incorporate them into your training program. Pete indirectly points out how most of us are doing no lactate threshold training (by running most of our daily runs to slow) and doing all of our interval work to fast. I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve his or her racing times. 4-0 out of 5 stars Compact but practical racing book
Very good book for learning to race everything from 5k to marathon distances. There is no fluff, just the facts on how to prepare for a specific race distance. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the authors schedules are a little too general for those of us who must have a detailed schedule. This book is not a beginner's book.To get the most from it you need to have some experience running races, even if you are a slow runner. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but there are better.
While this book covers all of the key elements of good training and racing, there are better books available on nutrition and training strategies (especially since the book is now almost ten years old). The book focuses on Sebastian Coe and uses him as an example. This only works to a point since most people didn't end up with his genes. If you are coaching young runners (many without Sebastian Coe's body or personality) and tried to use the mental conditioning section uniformly with each runner you would lose or ruin a good share of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alright but a little too technical for me
The book gives good guidelines to long distance racing, but it is geared to older children and was a little too technical for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Middle Distance Guru
Peter Coe has put together a short, highly readable volume that will benefit both coach and runner. He discusses in depth all things related to running the 800 and 1500. His multi-paced training program makes a lot of sense. I found myself underlining a lot of passages. Well Done!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all...
I read this book every day and love it!Kevin Nelson gives practical, fun and whimsical advice to people who love (or want to love) to run.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration
This book was given to me as a gift.Being a "novice runner" of two years, I found this book to be very motivational. It is very intuitive on the thoughts of runners and some of the obstacles runners may encounter and how to get beyond those barriers.I have thought it such an excellent book that I am suprised it is not readily stocked and available for 24 hour shipping, especially during the holiday season. You know us last minute shoppers. Great gift idea for the novice or avid runner in your life if you can find a copy of it in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Push you Through it All
The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration:A Year of Motivation, Revelation, and Instruction is most likely the best investment I have ever made.Last year, I made a resoltion to myself to get in shape, eat healthy, andbasically be a fit person inside and out. This is not a very easyresolution to fulfill, as I soon found out.It was my plan to run at least3 times a week, and supplement it with another form of aerobic exercise. Very quickly, I lost my motivation, and was not living up to myexpectations.I came upon this book soon afterwards, and tried to regainmy motivation. After restarting my exercise program along with readingthis book, I am now running every day of the week, rain or shine, hot orcold, I run through it all, all due this very book.If you buy one book inyour life, buy Catcher in the Rye.But if you buy two, buy this one too! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars where's the beef
I've been running for 35 years and coaching for many so I expected to pick up a book that would give some insight into a young runner's mind or some biomechanical needs of a young runner. The book is a cursory view of coaching and training. It's fine if you are just starting out with no background. But where's the meat and potatoes?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative, a good reference manual.
I am a Cross Country Coach for Lakeshore Middle School in Stevensville, MIand am building a program.I found the "Training for Young DistanceRunners" book to be very helpful.I have found the section onPsychology right on target.I have a son that runs High School CrossCountry who runs year around and after a successful summer road racingseason started the Cross Country Season doing very poorly.Using thePsychology section helped me get him back on track. The Nutrition sectionhas also been helpful for some of my runners.I give the book a two thumbsup.4-0 out of 5 stars good guide
I liked how this booked emphasized how important mental training should be integrated into a good, solid training prog. The scientific aspect is easy to understand though not nearly as thorough or complex as Martin and Coe's book. The training is very conservative, but the strength training advice was very helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Justification for Nutso Runners Like Me
This book is truly a classic on the biology and anthropology of exercise.I first stumbled upon it in the bookstore when I was just looking for some more books on running.I wasn't looking for anything in particular and I picked up "Why We Run" off the shelf to give it a chance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Original and unique...at times, quite compelling
This is one of those books that is almost impossible to categorize. It's part natural history, part autobiographical, and part training log of a world class ultramarathoner who set a master's record over two decades ago that still stands. It covers a wide breadth of biological research into animal and human locomotion in an attempt to explain what the author claims in an innate human nature to run.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must read for endurance athletes in any sport
This book was published in 2001, 20 years after the author ran in the 100 kilometer ultramarathon race in Chicago at the age of 41. You can guess the outcome :) This is one of those rare books where the writing gets better towards the end, unlike the deadline rush or inspiration vacuum that afflicts the quality of too many books in the last chapters. The early part of the book is devoted to biological treatises on various animals and examples of extreme adaptations (e.g., the speed of the antelope, the distance capacity of the camel without water, the extreme distances of certain bird migration patterns). This stuff reads very academically (the author is a PhD biologist) and won't appeal to all readers, but is interesting in that you see how it fuels the author's thinking about his own training preparations later in the book. The last few chapters are simply superb. It is the story of the author's training and experimentation with energy management of fats and carbohydrates during training, his stream of consciousness during the race itself, and of course the race outcome. Imagine running 62 miles in less than 7 hours! At the age of 41. Some of the author's philosophy of running and of life itself emerges as well, and you get a sense of an unassuming ego that is so pleasant in today's fist-pumping narcissistic age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend For any Sports Fan!!
Breaks running down into 7 time periods from I. Running by Pre-and Early Humans (5,000,000-200,000 BC) all the way to VII The Modern Superstars (1950-2000). Covers the history of running spicing in some great biographies within the stories. Learn about the famous 20th century stars like Carl Lewis, Emil Zatopek and Haile Gebresilasie as well as obscure 19th century runners like George Seward, Harry Hutchens and Amy Howard.5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring and Exciting History of Running
Running Through the Ages is the most absorbing historical account of running and runners I have read. Its scope is wider than anything previously attempted, ranging from prehistory to the end of the twentieth century, and taking in professional running for men and women as well as the more familiar amateur era that dominated the last century. It is supported by hundreds of rare illustrations, most of which will be new, even to historians of the sport. There is a six-page bibliography and a comprehensive index. Edward Sears is a runner himself, and he wrotes with insight and enthusiasm as well as the skill of a storyteller. His section on George Seward, "The American Wonder", is a revelation. There are superb assessments of athletes as varied as Deerfoot, Arthur Duffey, Paavo Nurmi, Helen Stephens, Jesse Owens, Wilma Rudolph, Bill Rodgers, Buddy Edelen and Haile Gerbrselassie, for this author has the deep knowledge of the sport to give credit to great and lesser names. All the great races are vividly described and the dramas of the Olympic arena expertly chronicled. This is a fine, inspiring and articulate book. I don't merely recommend it to anyone interested in the sport; I urge you to read it. ... Read more

I think this is a very nice book but perhaps not as "entertainingly" written as the Jeff Galloway running books ("Marathon-You Can Do It" and "Half-Marathon-You Can Do It") that I've also read. The author even quotes Galloway in a couple of places.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories of real adventure
I've seen adventure racing on TV (Eco Challenge, Primal Quest, etc.).And those shows always concentrate on the drama, the beautiful people, and so on.This book, however, shows what adventure racing is all about. The 30 stories in this book are all from people who love the sport of adventure racing and have dedicated a part of their lives to the sport that they love.
5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring read
I was originally turned on by the book "Becoming an Ironman" as I was training for my own first Ironman. This book had the same effect on me. The stories by the different athletes repeat similar tales of pain, adventure, pain, beautiful scenery, pain, and all-out efforts, but they also report another common experience that extends beyond that of individual sports: therewards of developing team relationships that come from depending so completely upon each other during such a difficult event. The book does a great job of describing this exciting sport. ... Read more

Editorial Review

There's probably no more democratic image in sports than the sight of thousands of athletes and dreamers lined up in places like New York or Boston or Los Angeles or wherever they're about to test themselves against, in the end, themselves over 26 miles of running hell. The only thing the marathon discriminates against is the unprepared: age, sex, nationality, race, even physical disability all peel away when the mix of athletes, from the elite Olympian to the neighbor next door, responds to the report of the starter's pistol. This smart, agreeable compilation of oral histories recalls the first encounters of 37 marathoners, and the stories they tell are marvelous, inspiring, despairing, filled with hope, and wracked with aches and pain. The great Bill Rogers remembers not finishing his first attack of the Boston, and the equally great Greta Weitz recounts what it was like to smash the record in New York her first time out. But it is the voice of the common runner--some nationally famous, like writer Erich Segal, others only known to their loved ones--that consistently gives Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Read
My running buddy told me about this book.We are both running our first marathons this year. This book made me laugh and cry and yet continued that "fear of the unknown" for my first marathon. The short narratives made it an easy read and a quick one, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, but gets monotonous
Interesting book for the first time reader. Not something that you will pick up and read over and over.As you get through several stories they actually get a little monotonous but it is still an interesting read.If you don't have to spend the money and can get it at the library, I would recommend that first.5-0 out of 5 stars Almost makes me want to try it!
I can only read one story every few days or else I start entertaining thoughts of running a marathon! Read one story at night before bed and you're sure to get up and run in the morning. It reminds you of all the good things about running- clearing your head, planning your day, getting away. It temps you with the pride and success you feel when you've accomplished something great- a marathon a hill or a problem in life. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Drab & boring in places
I can't agree with the sweep of 5-star ratings. This book has it's moments, but at times it was so slow and boring.Don't know how it ranked this high.

5-0 out of 5 stars To The Max
After reading "Angeles Crest" I know now that there's a difference between living and being ALIVE. Mr. Modzelewski exudes life-force, courage, humor, and rare sensitivity in not only running 100 miles -- but in not being afraid to answer the very questions of our existence. That's it. No more smoking, eating junk -- I'm lacing up a new pair of running shoes and hitting the trails, with an open heart and mind to all of life's possibilities. Thank You, Michael Modzelewski.

Michael Modzelewski opened the Door with his first book, Inside Passage and here he runs through that door into a world we all should be living in, if we only we had the courage to open our minds to explore and accept "paranormal" worlds existing in parallel universes around us. WOW, Michael! You've taken your potential as a writer and a man and with this book blown it up sky-high and soul-deep. Michael Modzelewski is the prototype of the man for the future NOW. He operates on "all cylinders" -- and then some!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book! Changed my life...
I would like to thank Gary Null for getting this book out to the public. It's helped me get back my health. I'm 54 and could hardly walk a 100 feet before starting these exercises. I'm walking 3 miles daily now and have lost 70 pounds and I owe it to Gary's advice from this book. The book breaks down each exercise routine into east to follow steps and gives plenty of great info about diet. I would also like to point out a rather suspicious review from Publishers Weekly. This review slams this book and I really don't know why. The complaint seems to be too much information for advanced runners. Well if you're an advanced runner any book for beginners to advanced will have info in it that's covering what you already know. I believe this is just another establishment crony looking to take a shot at a leader in the alternative medicine and holistic health field. Thanks again Gary

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a break from running and read this book!!!
This book made me laugh the whole time I read it and most of the time I realized I was laughing at myself. Anyone who has ever felt the "need" to run, with the exception for those that are being chased by something life threatening, can find a bit of themselves in this book. Every runner realizes that they are being stupid when they chance that tornado warning for a quick 5 miler, but many don't realize that there is a whole addicted population out there running around hoping they can outrun the tornado when it so rudely interrupts that run. Every runner should read this book to have a good laugh at themselves, a feeling of unity with other crazy runners, a feeling of superiority over those crazy arm flailers, and a frankly, just to take a few hours off of running to give those knees a break. Of course, afterwards, go out for a celebratory 10K.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than All the Rest
My cousin's a runner and when I gave him Wired to Run for his birthday a week ago, he told me that he loves it--and that it's better than all the others. He should know--he's read them all! It's a great gift for any runner--and for yourself. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous but real advice for runners
Skupien does a great job of weaving humor and applicable advice into the universally known "12 steps" model. Provides for runnersas many "glad I'm not the only one" identifiable moments as Grogan's "Marley and Me" did for dog lovers. Think both serious andcasual (me) runners will greatly enjoy it. ...
