Editorial Review

Exercise books often make grandiose claims of improving everything from your sex life to your cholesterol level. At best, these claims are harmless; at worst, annoying. Every so often, however, a program is developed with attention to specific issues, backed up with strong medical knowledge, and presented in a plain and helpful manner. Peggy Brill is a physical therapist who has created just such an exercise program. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God my sister gave me this book!
My sister gave me this book a couple of years ago after she had had success with it.My body was "asking" for exercise, but the best I could do for it was read about exercising.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just starting the program
I'm in the middle of learning how to do the beginning exercises in this book. I was in Physical Therapy about 6 months ago for back pain and knee problems, and was beginning to outgrow the exercises they had given me. While these exercises are harder than the ones I was doing, they were doable, even for me.

Editorial Review

Talk about performing under pressure! New York City firefighter MichaelStefano describes wrestling with a 2.5-inch-thick high-pressure hose gushingwater at over 200 gallons per minute, raising and climbing heavy ladders, operating superpowerful saws, and rappelling down the sides of multistorybuildings--all while weighted down with bulky protective equipment, and oftenwhile soaking wet ("where there's fire, there's water"). Endurance, strength, and vigor are not only necessary for peak performance--they are lifesavers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice for those starting out....
I picked up Mr. Stefano's book shortly after receiving a back injury which sidelined me for several months. As a result, I ended up gaining a few extra pounds which I was eager to be rid of.The book is 8 chapters in under 130 pages, so it's a quick read. The writing style is direct and to the point, and Mr. Stefano throws in stories from his firefighting career to keep things interesting and stress specific points he's trying to make.He addresses topics such as cardio vs. strength training, diet and caloric intake, specific exercises, and staying motivated. The book is directed at beginners, and he gives enough info to be useful, but not enough to overwhelm.I've been working out using the book's techniques for about 90 days now, and in that time I've lost 15 pounds and made noticeable gains in stamina and strength.I think 30 minutes a day is a little optimistic on his part, though. My workouts tend to last closer to an hour, but since I'm achieving measurable results, I don't think that's a bad thing. If you're willing to dedicate a little time and discipline though, you'll find this book to be a worthwhile purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost there
I recently purchased the book and should say that this is reasonable guide for a regular person - it describes very well all necessary components for keeping yourself fit. I find the book as good for both men and women; in fact, I gave it to my wife to read and she liked it. It is easy to read and is structured well. Being myself in athletics for 10 years up untill 15 years ago, I support the author in his approach that simply pumping muscles will not make you healthy, but requires a good plan and steady execution.
1-0 out of 5 stars Slow, too easy, too boring
This video is painfully boring and would not challenge even the newest beginner to exercise. To much boring blather between each series of exercises. Explains at length very simple moves yet demonstrates poor (some time dangerous) form and bad habits. If you are looking for a quick and efficient workout - or worse, a challenging one - run, don't walk, away from this one. I wish I could get my money back! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!
This is a wonderful, easy and quick way to tone up your hips and thighs.I can definately see a difference in the 3 weeks that I've been following the program. As a mother of 3, it's hard to find time in my busy schedule for lengthy work-outs. This was the perfect solution.Love the book!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good For Several Reasons
If you are just getting started, time challenged, not interested in the gym scene and don't feel the need to 'have to' use the latest machines, etc. - then this book is a good place to start.
5-0 out of 5 stars Motivator
This book is fabulous!my travelling clients have found this to be an important resource, especially given that they find themselves in all kinds of different gyms across the country. So its only logical for them to utilize the equipment available. This is where this book has really helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars A therapist agrees
In this deceptively short and user-friendly book, Dr. Goldsmith has managed to speak to core issues of most relationships. As a couple therapist myself, I enjoyed his commonsense and "You can do this!" approach. His exercises and examples ring very true, and simplify the process of turning complaints into requests. This is a book that will encourage anyone struggling with fears of rejection or intimacy. He teaches the reader that being a grown-up in a primary relationship can be playful, while also addressing how to bring up the difficult topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read Every Word!
Goldsmith has hit a homerun! In our busy lives, 10 minutes a day is an easy investment that delivers excellent returns. We exercise everything else, our minds, our bodies and our dogs! Relationships are really about respect and daily emotional deposits. I loved the content, his steps and tone. The tips on dealing with anger, fear and asking for what we need are keys to making a relationship work. Thanks Dr. Goldsmith for taking the time to write this incredible book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Happy Camper
I see from the other reviews that this book is already well-received, but I want to say that I have been able to personally employ some of Goldsmith's no-nonsense approaches in my own life and watch them work. I'm learning that a relationship needs maintenance like any other worthwhile thing, and I'm grateful to own a book of expert advice on relationship maintenance. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't understand the hype
Buy this book only if you know nothing about exercise and fitness. It contains only the very basic information. The workouts are too easy and 8 min is not nearly enough to start any fat burning. However, it is very entertaining to read the personal stories of the people that managed to lose weight.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A JOKE!
This book's a joke. It should be called the Jorge Cruise book since his photo appears practically on every page. He's a little too much into himself. There's no new info in this book I haven't already read somewhere else. Body for Life is much better. I wasted my money on this one. If you're a woman looking for a great book on exercise and nutrition to lose weight- I highly recommend Body for Life for Woman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why this weight-loss program?
If you are serious about weight loss, you are probably looking for a program that works with your real life. Jorge Cruise offers that. Your actual weight loss might be more like a pound a week -- but remember that you are turning fat to muscle while you lose. Also, the eight minutes is more like 15 when you do legwork and add the cool-down stretches, and that doesn't count whatever you do (like walking) for your warm-up. There is a lot of encouragement in these pages, stories from real people who have lost real weight. I've just started my second 28-day cycle and find the simplicity and variety fit with real life. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a shock!! I'm that SMALL % with NO improvement
I was doing the 10 week program. After 9 weeks of doing the program, I gave up.. I have not seen any improvement. I would notice something because I can't see anything clear past 7 inches from my face. So forgive me for not doing the 10th week but I don't believe the 10 week is the magical number where everything changes suddenly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Personal review of "Improve Your Eyesight" by James Bellevue
I purchased this book and tape ten years ago and have not yet had to purchase new glasses. The book is very easy to understand and the video is easy to follow with very simple and clear to understand directions.I highly recommend this book to anyone for eye vision improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds
I was a little perplexed by the following two reviews.I do not understand how Mr. Hwang claims the video contains only 3 exercises. There are 16 different exercises on the video tape, some are demonstrated and others are animated graphics which are watched.Maybe Mr. Hwang received a defective video tape, in which case I would request that he return it for a replacement.I assume he didn't watch only the first 5 minutes of the 90 minute video to make his evalution.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best yoga book I've read so far
This book is written for those interested in yoga that suffer from depression and/or anxiety. Also for those wishing to boost their memory and concentration. You can use the poses separately or in the routines they are written in. There are routines for waking up, before bed, during the day and for when you are sad, angry, panicky, need a new perspective, to get unstuck, to feel proud and much more. This is a book you need to own or borrow for a long time until you memorize the moves. This was a very worthwhile read and for now, the best yoga book I've ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Yoga . . . .
I picked this up at the bookstore, mainly because I was looking for a beginner's guide to yoga, and this seemed to fit the bill. The routines are simple and I really like the author's reassuring tone. The fact that the routines can also be done in as little as 5 minutes is also a big plus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great for the hard to motivate
I have always been the type who has a hard time sticking to an exercise routine. After the birth of my third child, the pounds didn't melt away as easily as with the others and I got Kathy's postpartum DVD with Cindy Crawford.I got addicted and loved Kathy's down to earth approach-she gives reminders about form but is not overly exuberant like some trainers. After several weeks I loved the results so much that I checked out this book from the library. There are parts that are still extremely challenging for me,even after about 6 weeks, but I am doing her daily routine faithfully. I ended up purchasing the book from Amazon after enjoying my library copy so much. She really stresses fitness as a lifestyle and gives some great advice and recipes in the book. Plus I can't help but love the celebrity tidbits.

2-0 out of 5 stars Anticipating mental fatigue...
I returned the book. Cumbersome. Not what I expected after a promo on TV had gotten me interested. Signed up and doing Jazzercise instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excersizes that work, and easy to do at home

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for teens who want to shape up - if you have time.
This workout certainly works. It definitely has done everything that it's promised it would.I've only been following the program for about three weeks, and I've noticed a drastic difference.I'm 19 years old, and even though I am in no way overweight, doing this program regularly has helped me lose over five pounds in the three-week span I've been doing it... and I haven't even been following the diet.
3-0 out of 5 stars Toning for teens
The workout was great..I did notice a difference. However, her nutrition section is wrong. There are better books out there than this one for weight/strength training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Workout Book For Teens!
This book has helped me out a lot! Just to add a point, for all the people that are saying that the diet part of this book isn't good for you at all, it actually is...if you're a person over weight. The books states in the beginning that you should only do the exercises if you aren't over weight. If you are over weight try the exercises and do the diet plans.

5-0 out of 5 stars yes, Yes, and YES !!!
FINALLY somebody wrote a book to fairly and accurately contrast the dominant models of health care in our country. The Mechanistic Model vs. the Vitalistic Model.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sound advice
The author presents a comprehensive plan for getting in touch with our bodies in four areas: nutrition, exercise, stress management, and time management. His '5-in-5' plan is designed to instill the good habits that will lead to optimum health benefits. While some of it is common sense, it's the kind of sense that are good to be reminded of, relating to how we react to stress, how important some exercise is each day (even in small doses) and specific ways to apply the material to real life.
4-0 out of 5 stars It just makes sense!
One Minute Wellness is a worthy continuation of Ben Lerner's previous book Body by God. You'll like Ben's attitude. Demanding full respect for your bodies given to you by God. In today's marketplace of fad diets this book is right on time. What keeps healthy people healthy is their entire lifestyle--that's what this book is all about. It takes into account how your body was designed and how to live in accordance with that design. Health comes from within, and Ben gives instruction on how to live to keep that health. Following Ben's advice just for a few weeks will bring you more energy, more vibrancy, and vitality. It is not always easy but it's worth it. The main value of this book is that it will help people to wake up and take charge of their health. Research the things that Dr. Lerner mentions. Add some regular exercise to healthy foods, and eliminate fast food (sodas, refined sugars, potato chips, white flour bread, fried foods, etc). You have more control over your health than you realize. It just makes sense to listen to your own body and respect its needs. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough information...
This book is cute, and nicely written but doesn't offer enough information to assist the reader in making appropriate clothing choices, nor enough pictures/examples to use as a guide. So the reader is feeling no better off than before, I mean it's a start I guess...but for the little information that is provided it's not worth the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars From Frumpy to Boring is More Like It

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the abs books
My informal surveying of guys shows that they wouldn't buy such a book as this because all you need to do to get "flat abs" is to do more crunches or sit-ups.

4-0 out of 5 stars tried it, I'll pass....
After doing Joyce's 'Bone-building body-shaping workout' for a few months, I did not enjoy 'Definition' as much. The full pyramid method was a real bore - too much of the same thing, sorry to be so honest.I am also confused as to what 'definition' really means, if it does not involve adding ANY bulk.As some others mentioned, putting avocados on the forbidden food list really saddened me - we eat avocados every day while they are in season because they are delicious, and cheap where we live.As far as the workout goes, I am looking for a few to rotate through every few weeks, but 'Definition' will not be one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Weight Resistance Plan that REALLY Works
Joyce Vedral's book "Definition" provides a weight resistance plan that even the most resistant of exercisers can undertake and still achieve results.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love that Joyce!
With all due respect to the reviewer who had negative comments about Joyce's diet suggestions: yes, she does have some "forbidden foods;" but, if you had read the diet closely, you would see that there is no danger of feeling deprived or binging if you follow what she says. With Joyce's diet you get one entire "cheat day" per week. That means that you can eat doughnuts, pasta, peanut butter and avocados all day long if you want just as long as you follow the diet for the other six days.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Borrowed at Library
This book is very short & sweet with b&w photos. The idea is easy. Take a food that you love & notice where you feel the most excitment about it in your body. Take a food you hate & notice where you store the hate in your body for it. Then switch the two feelings in your mind. It's very simple mind exercise. So easy, he repeats himself in an overview another time & the same b&w photos are printed again to make the book bigger. The question is if you have the discipline for 3 min a day in the car, train, etc. to do it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars gentle, helpful, beautiful book
I've had a yoga practice, on and off, for many years. Recently I've been challenged with arthritis in some of my joints and have had to modify my practice. I find Naomi Call's approach---doing yoga in bed---a softer, helpful and pleasant way to start the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga in Bed: Awaken Body., Mind & Spirit in Fifteen Minutes
I love this book! The poses are easy to follow and descriptions are clear. One can use this book for many different reasons. As a great way to begin or end your day.I gave a copy of this book to my 81 year old mother, she can't stop telling me how wonderful she feels. She now loves waking up doing yoga in bed, it is something she can and WILL do. A friend recovering from surgery is recovering faster by doing these gentle yoga stretches along with breathing properly. My daughter is doing Yoga in Bed with her newborn baby.Thank you,Naomi for this precious gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feel Better Fast!
This book has made a huge difference in my life.I was someone with good intentions about exercising and doing yoga in particular, but I could never organize the time or create the space in my life to act on my intentions. This book changed all that for me.Now I do 10-15 minutes of yoga each morning before I get out of bed, before I let anything else enter my thoughts. That's the key! There is no distraction and the yoga has become my priority.I never would have believed it.There are clear instructions and photos for the postures which make it easy to follow in the beginning. I also like the quotes and bits of poetry that help to inspire on a dreary day.Beautiful flower photos are a bonus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great product
I exercise regularly and have used several different programs. With four kids and one on the way, I often have a hard time squeezing in time to spend an hour at a time working with weights. This is a great alternative if you want to stay in shape but don't want to spend hours a week working out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good exercise program
I am already on the South Beach diet, so I purchased this kit to add strength training to my routine.I have been using the 8 minutes in the morning kit for two weeks now, and I already feel stronger.I like the kit a lot, because I am able to take out the cards I need for the next day and set them out with the dumbells as a visual reminder. My guess is that the book is harder to stick to.I didn't pay much attention to the CD, and the diet seems a little odd, but then again I didn't try it.I did tape a before picture and a motivational after picture in the little booklet that came with it, and that is really helpful.8 minutes may not seem like a lot, and it really isn't, but it does add up to 48 minutes a week, which isn't too shabby.I think this program is a great easy way to fit exercise into your daily routine.

3-0 out of 5 stars On week 2
I am on week 2 of the kit, and I haven't seen any changes.I think that this program is really meant for persons who are really out of shape...I just wanted to firm up and lose maybe 5 lbs.The diet would probably be hard for people who overeat, but since I eat fairly well, I don't think it was much of a change from what I already eat.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Well.....okay
It delivered what it said it would - 1,440 reasons to quit. Not all of them inspired though ...It's a small book too - the type is also small.I didn't think it was worth the money spent. You could find more inspiration online or from sections of more meaty books like Complete Idiots Guide to Quitting. After getting through the first few pages I was like "Dang! - I could do a more imaginative job myself" (and I'm a crummy writer) :-)But hey, if you want to send a message to a smoking friend .... this is a positive and non-confrontational way to do it....would make a good stocking stuffer too (it's that small...)

1-0 out of 5 stars If you're desperate to spend your cig money on something...
Ok, so you're going to quit smoking.... CONGRATS!!!! WOOHOO!!! GOOD FOR YOU!!!!! 5-0 out of 5 stars SMOKERS AND EX-SMOKERS MUST BUY THIS BOOK
This book got me to quit. I've tried quitting a hundred times. I smoked for 24 years since I was 14 years old and have never gone more than 2 months without a cigarette until now. I've been quit for 3 months as of today and I'm nowhere close to going back; I'm done with this disgusting habit.I've used a million different strategies to quit and I always went back to smoking...until I bought this book. Whenever I tried to quit before I would have a reason to quit that I thought would work. For example, I would quit because of my health, or my tennis game, or my love life. Whatever. Eventually, when faced with enormous cravings, these excuses didn't hold up to the power of nicotine. What this book does is give you 1440 reasons to quit, not just one or two reasons. Now, when I get a really bad craving where I think I'm going to bust, I just pick up 1440 Reasons To Quit Smoking and I realize what a dangerous and stupid habit it is. Now, if I was to ever decide to smoke again, it would just be suicide pure and simple. Also, go to quitnet.net, the best website in the world if you want to stop smoking. ... Read more
