It's a good "first pilates disk" while you're trying to figure out if Pilates is the thing for you. Jennifer has a nice voice, shows the exercises well, the workout has a nice pace and flow to it. Don't attempt rollovers though - it's a very advanced exercise that for some reason made it on this disk.

I have been some what experienced with pilates since 16. This book is terrible. It leaves no room for advancement, especially if you prefer "traditional" pilates. Plus, mixing advanced moves with basic moves. No. Try the Complete Idiot's Guide to the Pilates Method, The Powerhouse, The Pilates Body.

This is an excellent introduction to Pilates (Pilates, not Yoga, as the Editorial Review above states!!) for the beginner who wonders what all of the hype is about, but doesn't want to drop a few hundred on classes or a private instructor. It's a good taste of things to come, and not a half-bad core strengthening program. Ms. Pohlman's book and DVD (I use the DVD almost exclusively when traveling, since I can play it on my laptop) are very clear and easy to follow.

This book gives a nice little history of Pilates, as well as explaining the mental attitude and approach to doing pilates exercises. One nice thing about it, is that she discusses who some instructors approach exercises one way, while others a different way, and encourages you to seek out your own instructor and follow their advice.

I had purchased Ungaro's Body in Motion and Siler's Pilates Body to begin doing pilates, as they were generally the most respected texts. But my back couldn't handle the most basic level of some of the introductory exercises. This book, however, along with Tia Stanmore's Pilates Back Book, has given me a sequence of exercises and modifications that will get me where I want to be. This book is brief, but does not claim to give you a complete pilates program -- just preliminary and, later, supplemental exercises for those of us with cranky backs. The Ungaro and Siler books are generally superior in terms of illustration and textual guidance, but without this book I'd be quitting and/or hurting before I ever got going with Pilates.

I bought this book along with the other three in the set.All of the books have the exact same first 42 pages, which is great if you're only buying one, but a waste if you buy all four, mostly since it's background information.Of the 50 or so pages of actual workout diagrams, three-quarters are in the other three books, so it's not like the book is only for your back/ thighs/ or other titled areas.I gave this book a two stars because I thought $10 was a little steep for maybe 10 new exercises in each book.This books picture also gives the impression that it is spiral bound, which it is not.It has a paper binding only. ... This small wonderful book cover all important aspects of the four disciplines appeared on its cover (Pilates, Yoga, Meditation & Stress Relief).I have had some Yoga classes before so I found this book a very good refreshment for my previous experience.However, its clear explanation and illustration will be equally helpful for the beginner.I also found that the stress management and meditation parts are very helpful.

Modern Pilates is the first book on any alternative form of exercise (Yoga, Pilates, Feldencrais and Alexander technique) that i have been able to not only understand but relate to my own body. It explains about posture, body types and metabolism and how the muscles work to hold and move the body. These explinations are detailed enough to assist me in making sence of my body but simple enough to apply to my daily routine (or occational lack thereof). Latey has modified the original techniques of Joseph pilates to suite anybody, not just the elite sports person. After trying Yoga and stretch classes at my gym and reading up on Alexander and Feldencrais technique and finally this book on pilates i have decided that now is the time for me to commit myself to the care of my body. Even through just reading Latey's book i have been better able to understand the neck and shoulder pain i get in the mornings and the soreness in my leg i get after running at the gym. I have been using some of her exercises over the last two weeks and suprisingly enough my morning pains have lessened. My next plan is to find time to go to a class which will be more of a challenge than finally finding the exercise for me.Read more
