5-0 out of 5 stars Professional endorsement
As a teacher of Pilates, this is the book I insist all new clients buy and refer to.It is simple, articulate, packed with lots of excellent information and provides a context (history, philosophy and ethic) for this work. The Everything Pilates Book is also an easy read and a valuable addition to anyone's workout program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely objective opinion
Well, not really.I've been a student at Amy and Rachel's Pilates Center -- which is often called "the Harvard of Pilates" -- for four years, starting as I recovered from back injuries in a car crash.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a fantastic book!
This book really had so much good, solid information in it.It was written very clearly and succinctly.I really enjoyed reading the history of Joseph Pilates. The book made so much sense to me.It is not just about exercise, it's about a way of life. It's about finding your core, getting everything in line. 5-0 out of 5 stars From a real reviewer!!!
I borrowed this book from my local library. I love it so much I have signed on to Amazon to order it for myself. Regardless of what the last reviewer thinks (how bored is that person anyway?)I have honestly read this book and found it simple, straight forward, and easy to follow. I tried several other books and videos and this was the clearest and least intimidating. People looking for an introduction to Pilates, this is definately the right book for you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Fitness Routine I like!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Reference for Pilates
Pilates, like yoga, is best studied with an instructor, because the benefits from the exercise are derived no in their execution, but in the attempt. Alignment is critical, and for beginners, "what feels right" may not be right, because they are unlearning a life time of incorrect posture. However, this book is close as one can get to a trained instructor. It teaches the reader how to identify current posture patterns. It offers recommendations for series of exercises to rectify skeletal and muscular alignment based on the posture assessment. It also includes series of exercises based on work style (e.g. if you stand much on the job, this set will help you the most; is you sit for prolongedperiods of times then try another set, exercises for those who use a key board all day, ect.). It also provides series of exercises for particular people who pursue athletic activities top address the imbalances that the repetition of these activities might pose to the body's structure (e.g. series for cyclists, swimmers, hikers, runners, volleyball players, ect.). And it provides combinations of exercises to address particular physical ailments and areas that people want to strengthen (e.g. sore backs, cramped feet, weak arms, sore necks, stomachs, ect.).
1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book for Pilates
This book was a great disappointment for me since it was my first on Pilates...not to mention a waste of money.A much better book is Alycea ungaro's book - Bodies in Motion and Brooke Siler's Book- The Pilates Body.Don't bother with this one

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarifies a lot of things!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pilates Book on the Market
When Pilates became the craze a few years ago, I immediately elected to apportion it a critical segment of my allotted exercise time. Using Amazon.com as an information springboard, I chanced upon Jennifer Kries and her set of Method sessions on VHS and DVD, purchased "The Method Precision Toning" and have been strengthening my abdominal powerhouse ever since."Precision Toning" moves fast for a duration of what seems like an hour, despite the 20 minutes cited on the jacket. As any Pilates advocate knows, each position follows a rigorous sequence where doing the exercise correctly matters much more than doing it with infinite repetition.Ms. Kries' instructions, although impeccable, however can become a little overwhelming on both an envisioned and executional level, especially when attempting to pull the navel to the floor, raise the shoulders so they crest off the floor, squeeze the inner thighs, relax the shoulders, breath properly and then actually facilitate the physical movement of each position.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Pilates Guide by America's Pilates Expert
"The Method relies on your brain as much as your body; it is a thoughtful and introspective approach to working out." ~Jennifer Kries
5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive workout
...I devoured this book as soon as it arrived.I have been practicing yoga and Pilates regularly for a little over a year, and I've been "dipping my toe in the pool" trying to get into dance. With my knowledge of some of the Pilates basics and using some of the NYC Ballet Workout, as well as some classic yoga moves, I tried to come up with the best way to synthesize the three into one routine. In many cases, I felt like I came up short. This book does a very nice job combining the three, although the emphasis is cearly on Pilates.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Ann Wroe's Pontius Pilate begins with the disclaimer that there isn't very much historical information about the former Prefect of Judea, and then goes on for 400+ pages. In fact, this book could be subtitled - "More than you ever wanted to know about who Pilate might have been." Wroe begins by giving us 3 different scenarios about Pilate's birth, with origins in Italy, or Germany, or Spain. Take your pick. Wroe provides three different stories with little guidance as to which is most likely. She then proceeds to tell us what life was like for the young adult when he lived in Rome. It's not about Pilate, per se, but about life in general for someone like Pilate, although we're not sure if it's the peasant Italian pilot, the swashbucking Spanaird, or the brooding German. Apparently it didn't make too much difference.
5-0 out of 5 stars What did Pilate really do?
Writing now in the advent of the movie the Da Vinci Code, there will no doubt be a spur of interest in books such as these about the characters surrounding the life and mission of Jesus.Like Thomas of the Gospel of John, believers and non believers alike seek to touch the wound and thereby gain "actual proof" of what the faithful maintain.
2-0 out of 5 stars A very disappointing read.
Either Ms Wroe wants to write a fictional novel based on Pilate or a historical analysis of the character. Reading this book it seems that she can never quite make up her mind. One minute we are reading what Josephus or Philo said about him in antiquity the next we are treated to a sample of the author's writing skills. It is almost like she cannot help herself and succumbs on every page to exercising her writing techniques by exploring imagery and metaphor.

1-0 out of 5 stars 'Milk the Christians' time is here again
This book is a notorious fraud from the 19th century.3-0 out of 5 stars Another "Hidden in the Vatican Library" Story
It is too bad that the Reverend W.D. Mahan really did not shelter a Mr Whydaman in the winter of 1856 who really had seen the documents found in Mahan's book. It would be wonderful to read an authentic interview of the Three Shepherds. It would be wonderful to read an authentic report of Pontius Pilate to Caesar. And it would be wonderful to read the report of Caiaphas concerning the execution of Jesus... if these documents were authentic. 5-0 out of 5 stars Pilate wept! Caiaphas sees resurrected Jesus!
These ancient documents, preserved for hundreds of years in their original language deep within the Vatican, corroborate the Biblical accounts of Jesus' trial, crucifiction, and resurrection. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars rather average Pilates book.
This book is pretty basic.I got much more out of The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler than this one. This book is short and does not get into too much of the exercises or techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book!
Buy The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler instead!!I bought both books and found the Pilates Workbook useless! The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler is so much better - Brooke was trained by a protg of Joseph Pilates, explains the philosophy of Pilates that doesn't put you to sleep, the exercise descriptions are the best I've seen, has a chart of the original 35 Pilates exercises which is great reference when doing Pilates, and explains very advanced extras which were originally developed from the apparatus. This workbook by King is not authentic Pilates and has poor descriptions of the exercises.Definitely not worth the money!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This one has an excellent exercise program.
I've been doing a lot of researching on valuable books on the Pilates method to keep in my library and this one fits the bill. It has 12 exercise levels you can follow and looking at the Pilates "family tree" on page 12 you'll know that you are getting authentic Pilates program. This book, books authored by Alan Menezes,Lynn Robinson, and Alycea Ungaro(Pilates body in motion) are well written books you should keep in your library... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical help for those beginning to exercise.
This is an excellent book for anyone who is just beginning to exercise and/or is out of shape. It is simple and gentle on the new-comer so it does not leave one discouraged. I noticed improvement in my posture almost immediately. I also felt my muscles were more balanced (some had been very tight from over-use and others had seldom been used at all). There is also a "dance" perspective: grace and balance. And most of all I think I have benefitted from being "oxygenated" and "stretched". The book emphasizes breathing and concentrating. Concentrating helps alleviate boredom for those of us who find exercising kind of dull. My suggestion: Buy some CD like "Ocean Dreams" to go with your little exercise session and it will almost seem "spiritual" because you will feel betterafterwards. This book is very practical, and I find myself now applying some of these Pilates principals of exercise throughout my day...even when I am at work. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine for Pilates rookies
This book describes exercises that seem closer to Yoga than traditional Pilates.I practiced traditional Pilates for 10 months prior to becoming pregnant and the exercises described were a big step backward for me.If you are new to the principles of Pilates, this is a good place to learn the basics of the "Powerhouse".However, I haven't heard great things about the Winsor or Green/King books either.I'd suggest finding a certified Pilates instructor to guide you through Pilates during pregnancy if you want to get the maximum benefit.Traditional instructors can be found at www.pilates-studio.com.You may also find instructors in your area that are certified by Stott or Physical Mind Institute. Both of these alternate methods offer variations to what is termed "Authentic" Pilates. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars about time!
I have been what the author calls a "pilatista" for 15 years, and I wish someone had written a book like this sooner!I commend her on the vast collection of research and information included in the book, which has been both helpful and inspirational.I will be looking forward to the sequel!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb support for teachers
Ms Conraths-Lange's book is entertaining and enlightening. She gives helpful advice and practical applications of techniques and teaching tools in this book. I really enjoyed her abdominal muscle teaching aide for clients. As a physical therapist, I encourage anyone who teaches in the mind-body field to read this book. Lots of laughs too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills in the Blanks
I'm a computer professional and have just taken my teacher training - not certified yet. Before leaving the safety of the status quo in my current career and investing more time and money into this new one, I needed some answers that weren't related to Pilates technique. This book provided them. "Is this really the right career for me? Will it provide a lifestyle that I can live with?" Sure, I could ask a mentor, but they're not going to know to dive right into these types of details, and I don't know enough about the industry to know the right questions to ask. Nicola provides insight on the different teaching environments so you can think about what suits you best. She provides insight on how to maintain a personal life in a profession where the boundaries on giving of yourself are easily blurred. She presents it in a lighthearted and down-to-earth way - and I also feel a lot less isolated about my pilates experiences. It's such a relief to have found a resource for career information on a relatively "new" career. ... Read more
