5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate portrayal of an amazing event
This book inspired me so much that I underlined passages of it and insisted that my crew members read them to me as I ran Badwater myself in 2002. Kirk Johnson's wit and honesty provided a delightfully endearing account of the highs and lows of Badwater training, suffering and finishing. Although I personally believe that words alone will never suffice in explaining why we do what we do, Johnson's attempt to unlock the mystery is as close as anyone will ever get.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an adventure, pure reading enjoyment
It was so fabulous to read this highly enjoyable chronicle of Kirk Johnsons journey from nonrunner, basically, to ultrarunner and badwater finisher. Amazing. As an avid runner and ultrarunner, it was refreshing to see the sport from his eyes. Ihad first learned of him in the documentary on the Badwater 135,Running on the Sun. this book chronicles how he first learned about the race, his trianing and time leading up to the race, and the race itself. It was a great book. I recommend it to runners and nonrunners alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars To the edge . . . and beyond.
It is a testament to the power of this book that it has generated such a wide variety of responses.Unfortunately, many readers fail to understand the author's intent and, therefore, fault this book for the wrong reasons. To the Edge, which recounts Kirk Johnson's participation in the Badwater Ultramarathon, is as much an interior journey as it is an account of the 135-mile foot race from Death Valley to Whitney Portal. To criticize it for not being a book of pure reportage, or a training guide, is to miss the point.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not very useful
This book contains a number of interesting meditations and reflections on marathon running. And viewed as such, it's a nice book to have. But the substantive guidlines on how to train are poorly lacking. There are some general guidlines and a few charts you can use to chart your progress, but there is little beyond that (e.g., about nutrition).

4-0 out of 5 stars Marathon Rookie
I enjoyed this book.Like I imagine a lot of improving runners, I have purchased several books with various training schedules as well as Runners World.I got this book mid-training, so did not use its best feature, the runners log.Lots of good advice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Training Book --- Here You Have It All!
Whatever you need to know about running, this is the book. There is some entertainment value but I found the tables for planning a 5K, 10K, and marathon very useful. The information on injury is extremely useful; Galloway even tells you when to give up on self-treatment and seek a doctor. This is the one book you absolutely need to train and compete.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE book for runners
I was advised to follow Jeff Galloway by my doctor after a running-related injury earlier this year. I borrowed the book from the local library, thinking I would browse thru it and return it. By the time I read the first 20-something pages, I was convinced I wanted to own this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who get overwhelmed by exercise
I was never a runner, I'm in my mid-30's, mom of kids, and I realized that I needed to get in shape, like zillions of other moms out there. My friend does 5k's every chance she gets, and I just got overwhelmed by her athleticism and what she could do, because I *knew* I couldn't do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsung Hero
I really enjoyed this book.Other people may go for the swagger of Pre or the domination of a Salazar or Rodgers. But, of all the the runners I've read about, Edelen is the one I identify with most.I suppose it's because he's more of an unsung hero of American running.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Reading this book was a delight. What got was that Buddy was nobody special at first - just another guy in the American collegiate system.Nonetheless, he took a risk, went to England to train with and compete against the best, and it paid off with a marathon world record.
5-0 out of 5 stars Running into oblivion
As a runner in Alamosa, where Buddy lived for many years, I was shocked to learn one day that a friend of mine was the son of this former world record holder.Having of course never read the book, much less heard of the man himself, I found myself buying this biography of Buddy Edelen. What I discovered was awe-inspiring: a man who worked himself past the brink only to run into oblivion.Even had I not known some of the particulars of Buddy's life, "A Cold, Clear Day" impressed me with a great sense of respect for Buddy as an athlete.Beyond tough, he deserves to be remembered in the annals of running lore. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Long Distance Runners
Even though this book is a few years old, the information hasn't been supplanted, simply because the human body is the same as it was ten years ago, as it was a thousand years ago.1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this at all costs . I'd like to give it a zero.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Old Timers Friend
The best part of this book are the charts at the end for converting "old man times" to "young man times". Mostly it seems to be a bibliography on Boston Billy and Priscilla Welch. But just the conversion charts are worth having.

1-0 out of 5 stars Seriously Out-of-Date
We bought this book when it was first published and it was tremendously helpful, but it hasn't been updated since 1998.I had hoped that the authors had released an updated version since I'm sure there are more and more international marathons added by different countries each year, not to mention cities change marathon months all the time (the Maui marathon has now moved from May to September each year), but no such luck. This book is now pretty much useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great piece of research work !
This book is exceptionally well researched, well thought out, and perfectly detailed. Each marathon is summarized perfectly in 2-3 pages. I enjoyed reading the entire book for enjoyment, even beyond the referencebook that it really is. It is obvious that the authors are veryknowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, as they provideabout every detail imaginable in the synopsis of each race. I have thegood fortune of living in Europe, and I have used the guide with greateffect to plan and run two European marathons. I also plan on using itfor North American marathons upon my return stateside.Great, great work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for planning my yearly marathon schedule.
I run 5 - 10 marathons a year with at least one being international. This book not only helps me plan my international marathons but also covers the best rated U.S. Marathons. It gives all the info necessary such as dates, number of participants in the previous year, the course, the spectators and much, much more. This book is an essential tool for those who make holidays out of the running. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Metric measurements and complicated flavor groupings
This book is filled with pictures of beautiful, colorful food and the chef's personal running tips and eating habits.I found the narration charming.I don't think that Chef Roux used an interpreter, so the text has a few idiosyncracies (e.g., "pet hates").Read more
