5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive safety guide
Child Safe covers virtually every area of child safety and all age groups in an easy-to-read, approachable style. Written by an emergency room physician, it is filled with common and not-so-common hazards and ways to prevent the calamities that can result from these dangers. The information is sobering, but indispensible, for parents, caregivers, and relatives. We gave copies to both sets of grandparents so that they would understand how much more we know since they raised their children, and to give them a resource for learning how to make their own homes "child safe." This kind of information can be received much better by a mother-in-law, for example, when it comes from an "expert."

5-0 out of 5 stars brandenburg= prophet
Dr. Mark Brandenburg--man or medical prophet? BOTH! As this book proves, Dr. Brandenburg is quite simply the Dr. Spock for the 21st Century. With hypnotic prose and horrifying cautionary tales, Dr. Brandenburg has crafted the parents bible for the millenium. This man is truly what doctors should be- a leader, father figure, and saint in surgical garb. God bless Dr. Brandenburg. I plan to journey to Tulsa to personally ask for Dr. Brandenburg's blessing. The holy power of this modern day mystic cannot be overestimated. His scalpel is guided from above. Read this book EVERYDAY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time
I've seen signs up in my local lab (when I went for blood tests) about the HPV virus. I'm guessing there are a lot of educational intitiatives out there. It's about time! Henderson, Yasgur and Warshowsky were out there educating women a couple of years ago. This is a really readable book and very informative. I hope that when women see the sign hanging in their labs, they'll turn to this book for information.

5-0 out of 5 stars STILL THE BEST BOOK OUT THERE ON HPV
Since the publication of this book, a spate of new books have come out discussing the HPV virus. It's great that this little-known condition has finally received some publicity! However, I would have to say that I still think this is the most reader-friendly and focused book around. I highly recommend it, and I give it to all my clients and patients who come in with the HPV virus. I hope that Henderson, Yasgur and co. publish more books on other medical topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative
For women who take the extra steps to understand and take responsibility for their own bodies (and their daughters'), this book is another Must Read.Since women bear the brunt of consequences for most STD's, as well as other reproductive issues, it pays to be as informed as possible.Dr.Dr. Henderson and company are to be commended for bringing this particular issue into the light and to the popular consciousness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The benchmark for endurance runners in footcare
Duct tape. Bag balm.Pliers.Most people who crew for me are a little alarmed when they notice these in my little black bag of foot care - but all are necessary and, although not all are specifically endorsed by John Vonhof, they are symptomatic of his core belief: different things work for different people.5-0 out of 5 stars How to keep your feet healthy over 100 miles ...
John Vonhof has put together a valuable reference book, based on a lot of experience with the ultrarunning community - mainly American but with many members throughout Europe and Australia. The demands of long distance running are of course extreme, and provide a good test-bed for techniques and recommendations which may be of value to anyone who is on their feet a lot, not only runners. A friend who is a personal trainer found this book to be the solution to his foot problems (heel spurs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!
I'm not an athlete, just a "40-something" struggling to keep fit.I'm hoping to be able to continue doing my daily moderate 3 mile dirt road up-and-down loop walk for many years to come. This year it hit me:I have to take care of my feet --proactively -- or I may not be able to continue walking well into my senior years. With this book, I'm confident I can deal with some emerging problems (calluses, bunions, ets.) and prevent others. The detailed information on boots and socks (e.g., types and changing) was especially helpful. And, the recommendations and tips throughout and from an impressive number of serious athletes are a definite plus and make for all the more interesting and worthwhile reading.Obviously, this book is great for athletes, but also dabblers like me, as well as, I would imagine, anyone who spends a lot of time on-the-job on his/her feet. Many would appreciate this book as a gift. ... Editorial Review

First, the bad news for over-30 jocks: your body is more susceptible to physical breakdowns caused by exercise and athletic competition. It is weaker, fatter, less flexible, and may be showing signs of arthritis and brittle bones. So it reacts differently to injury, taking longer to heal and making reinjury more likely. Gee, thanks. The good news is that Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected in the least
As an athletic trainer, I purchased the book for another source in dealing with my athletes and their injuries.I am always looking for summaries of injuries that I might present to them that will put them at ease and help them understand the treatment protocols.I found that too much information was outdated in the book, which kinda goes along with the people who it is meant for.The book did mention plenty of common injuries, however, I would not tell my friends or family some of the treatments given in the book. Most being behind the times, and speaking of behind the times, some of the Locker Room Lingo used is ways outdated, get with the times.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Return to Glory Days:My stocking stuffer solution
I heard Morton Dean interviewed on the radio about Return to Glory Days and was intrigued that he suffered more slings and arrows running, playing softball and tennis than he did covering the world's hot spots.Skimming through Return to Glory Days while in line to purchase it, I, for the first time, did holiday shopping before Christmas eve and bought 8 copies of Return to Glory Days for active friends and family members. The book reads like Mr. Dean's newscasts--straight-forward, easy to understand and just the facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Return to Glory Days is the bible for injury prevention!
I picked up Mr.Dean's book after seeing him on a local talk show. What a fabulous idea--providing a treatment/reference book for common sports injuries for those of us that still think are bodies can do what they did when we were 18. It's very well organized and user-friendly.Thank you, Mr. Dean.I can guarantee these pages will be worn and tattered from use.And now I have the best "get well" gift for my friends that over-do that weekend workout and want a quick recovery. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Best section available on "coping" strategy
If your repetitive strain situation has gotten to the point where you need primarily information on coping with the pain and inconvenience, possibly from surgery, this book has the best coverages of that aspect, among the 6 books I've read. The non-MD author appears to have written approximately 1/3 of the book from a non-technical viewpoint, describing the life experiences and ideas on coping, down to the most intimate issues. Easily worth the "price of admission" for any of the ideas you might pick up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but one piece of important info omitted
Great book, except:
4-0 out of 5 stars good practicaltips for living with an RSI
I disagree with the reviews below, I thought this is a fine book, a good complement to the books "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" by Damany and " Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Other Repetitive Strain Injuries" by Sharon Butler. It's true the latter two have much more on specific exercises to help get you better and I liked the medical information in Damany. However they don't have a lot of practical information on how to cope with your life during the healing process when you can't do a lot of the things you normally do in your daily life. This book fills that gap. It's got lots of practical suggestions of how to do things when you're injured. It's more of broader focus than the other books on the overall changes you need to make beyond the specific exercise program. I would recommed someone with an RSI get all three books as the information is complementary.

2-0 out of 5 stars very dystopic with little concrete information
This is an amazingly dystopic book, absolutely full of horror stories and unhappy endings. There's a chapter on how to have a sex life despite RSI, how to sue for loss of a career, the testimonial of a man who was paralysed from the waist down but found RSI more disabling etc - but nothing concrete about what RSI actually. OK, so now I know that if I have tendonitis I'm more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome and the rest of them but this book doesn't give me information on what tendonitis (or the others) actually is or how to make much of a change. There are quick mentions of various treatments but there is no discussion of their relative merits. The author tells us about her own exercise program (30-40 minutes a morning with weights and 1 1/2 hours of ballet four times a week plus walking and stretching) but there are no specific exercises that can help you avoid recurrance or assist in healing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It can happen to you - it may have already!
This book, along with "An Air That Kills", should be required reading for everyone. The asbestos epidemic is just starting to escalate, and this book explains why it has been allowed to do so. Think your government cares? Think again! I've been a nurse for 30 years, and I never saw a case of asbestos disease until recently. In 2002 I was diagnosed with asbestos cancer (mesothelioma) as were six others in my community. The other six are all dead now, and I wait for the reaper to take me. I got my lethal exposure from a single home renovation project 30 years ago. I was unaware that any structure built in the 50's, 60's, 70's or 80's is packed with asbestos. So I went from sanding drywall to losing a lung and my life. No exposure is safe - the EPA knew this a quarter of a century a go, yet they remained silent. If there's a scarier manifest about how expendable citizens are to the corporations and politicians, I've yet to encounter it. Read and beware, America!!

2-0 out of 5 stars The writing leaves something to be desired.
The story told in this book is shocking and should be more widely known - unfortunately the writing in this book is disjointed and poorly organized. After a while, I became bored simply because there was no continuous thread in the book leading me forward - just an assemblage of anecdotes with no real cumulative effect. This is a shame because the story should be far more riveting than it is - and it would be, if told by a more skillful writer - for instance, if this book had been written by Jonathan Harr, author of "A Civil Action."

5-0 out of 5 stars Warning: This Book May Be Hazardous to Your Blood Pressure.
Let me say right up front that I am a steadfast supporter of the free market. However, it serves neither the free market nor humanity when giant corporations are run by people who are no better than mass murderers.Exaggeration?Read this book and see if you still think so.I read "Fatal Deception" because a friend of mine and his wife acquired a vacation cabin in Libby, Montana a few years back. When newspaper reports began appearing about the widespread asbestos poisoning there, I asked if that was the same town."Yep," he replied with a disgusted sigh."We call it our own little Three Mile Island, Montana."(Fortunately, the relative who'd given them the cabin later demanded it back.)Read more
