4-0 out of 5 stars Plan it out.
Ah, now here's a travel fitness book by a guy who thinks like I do.
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but there are better books out there
I was disappointed in this book. It seems as if the author needed to pad his book out, so he added a lot of really basic filler material that didn't add to the subject at hand. Several times he'd write a couple of paragraphs on some subject, then tell you to go to some website, which is really annoying, especially as we all know that websites can disappear overnight, and quite often do.
3-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Married Man with Kids
For years I have struggled with trying to balance my family, my career, and my health. With this book I have finally learned how to get in an excellent workout in a short period of time without having to invest the time in going to the gym.The author provides some great discipline ideas to get into shape and STAY IN SHAPE.I would recommend this book to anyone who has all of the loads of family and work who realizes the necessity for good health and fitness.I haven't read anything that synthesizes the mental and physical path better. ... So you listened to the doctors and public-health professionals and Nike commercials, and you believe it's a good thing that you're still exercising and playing sports well into your fourth or fifth or even sixth decade of life. You know all about the problems that accrue with inactivity: a weak heart, clogged arteries, and atrophied muscle tissue and bone mass, all of it adding up to a precipitous decline in physical abilities.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and helpful
"Athletic Forever" provides information on getting into shape without getting injured. It offers nutritional guidance and provides an easy-to-understand overview of the principles of scientific training -- the very guidelines used by professional coaches and athletes for attaining peak fitness. Should you get injured in the course of pursuing sports and recreation, "Athletic Forever" will get you back in the game fast: simply refer to the back of the book where you'll find a comprehensive guide to sports injuries -- how to recognize them and what to do to overcome them. This is a no-nonsense, easy-to-understand book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Athletic Forever is an excellent health reference book because it doesn't simplify things, as so many new "fitness plans" do. Dr. Jobe & his colleagues simply present good factual information and excellenttips to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle. I found the back sectionof exercises particularly useful and authoritative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for all athletes and health professionals!
It was a great pleasure to read and learn from "Athletic Forever. The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Plan for Lifetime Fitness." Dr. Frank Jobe et al have taken on an interesting, contemporary subject in a mosttimely manner. The glowing forwards from Tommy Lasorda and Magic Johnsonillustrate the tremndous respect that professional sports celebrities havefor Dr. Jobe and "Athletic Forever." The text is formatted in alogical, concise manner and explores anatomy, injuries and treatmentprotocol without getting bogged down in needless detail. The KJ facts andcloseups clearly add a new dimension to the body of knowlege regardinglifetime fitness. I especially enjoyed the insights with regards todiagnosing the cause of back pain. It is very refreshing to hear fromtheexperts that high tech and costly imaging methods such as MRI's are in manycases unrelated to a patient's back pain. The section on stregthening andflexibility exercises is presented in a straight forward manner yetprovides exceedingly valuable information in a refreshingly "lowtech" appearance. Perhaps it is beyond the scope of the text, but itmay have been useful to discuss 1 or 2 of the Kerlan-Jobe innovations inthe field of sports medicine (For example, I would have been extremelyinterested in the story of Tommy John and the procedures and rehabilitationused in the "rebuilding of his pitcher's arm.") I would highlyreccomend "Athletic Forever" to all athletes and healthprofessionals! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Divot and the Older (gasp!) Female Golfer
Having taken up golf again once my son had grown, I quickly realized that I was not in the physical shape of the 20 year old I had been when I first started playing in college. After my first injury to my elbow and a badly strained shoulder, I started looking around for a book that would help me with conditioning, preventing injuries and counsel me if (please, no!) this happened once again. At this point I had had enough of physical therapy, MRIs, etc. and didn't wish to injure myself further.

4-0 out of 5 stars In response
I have a copy of this book as well, and I decided to check on the comments of the last reviewer. I didn't find any mention of waiting 1-3 minutes before calling 911 in cases of CPR. In fact, the book makes a point of notputting off calling 911, especially if you haven't practiced CPR before. The book provides natural remedies interspersed in the text. They are notedwith an icon next to the paragraph so the reader will know that these arealternatives to regular medicine. I am not an advocate of natural medicine,so I really didn't pay much attention to those paragraphs.I do suggestthat anyone really serious in first aid should take a class (from RedCross, for example). That is the only way you can safely practice CPRbefore really performing it.

1-0 out of 5 stars First Aid and Safety For Dummies
I have been a big fan of the "For Dummies" series and own many copies of their books. However, my most recent purchase, First Aid and Safety for Dummies, has been extremely disappointing. The purpose ofreading this book was to find a book that my first aid and CPR studentscould reference for more details than the standard class covered. However,I found the book to have incorrect information, and information thatcontradicts the nationally accepted standards. The authors are medicaljournalist with no documented emergency medical experience. The onlysection of the book that had reasonable information was the "SpecialSituations" section. The first aid, and preparation section hasrecommendations that could be harmfull, even deadly if followed. Forexample, the book mentions numerous times that first aid and CPR should beperformed for 1-2 minutes before EMS(911) is activated, the nationalstandard is; as soon as an adult person is found unresponsive to activate911. The reason is that most adults go unconscious or into cardiac arrestis due to an irregular heart rhythm, this rhythm can only be reversed withdefibrillation by a portable defibrillator (like in the show ER). This iswhy most communities have police, fire, and ambulances carrying theseunits, airlines also now carry them. A delay of a "few" minutescan mean the difference between life and death. The book also makes arecommendation for during an asthma attack to use the herbal supplementephedra (it mixes alternative medicine in with traditional medicine, duringthe first aid section;versus having a seperate chapter addressingalternative medicine). Ephedra has been known to cause deaths in healthyyoung people (it is used as an energy boost, simular to caffeine)someonemay misinterpret this and use it alongside with a prescibed asthma inhaler, this could be deadly. These are just a sampling of the mistakes(personally, the two most scariest in my opinion). I have written IDG booksand hope to get a response. My recommendation is if you want a book onFirst Aid or CPR stick with a nationally recognized organization (i.e.American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National SafetyCouncil)many of these publicationsare available online. And mostimportantly, take a class, the books are invaluable, but so isn't the handson experience you will recieve. I am writing this as a First Aid and CPRInstructor with 12 years of emergency medicine experience. Once again, other than this particular book, I have enjoyed and found the "ForDummies" series very informative. ... Read more
