1-0 out of 5 stars Motivating Yourself to Read This Book in its Entirety
Although the concept behind this book sounds interesting, it is simply a long winded conglomeration of surveys and redundant information.I was disappointed in the manner that this book window dresses ground level basics, without any new innovative or even remotely unique ideas for motivating clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. You may not want to do it Suzanne's way, but she's asked the right questions, and used her celebrity to bring attention to a very important topic - one that professionals and patients should be more aware of, and that major pharmaceutical companies wish you weren't.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sexy Years:Discover the Hormone Connection
This is a great first book to read before entering in to perimenopause is possible. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I was told I no longer needed a period..(don't let a doctor tell you that)it just speeds up the ride to menopause. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! Drug companiest hate them becasue you can't patent them and they must be mixed in a special pharmacy called a compounding pharmacyI find myself educating Dr.s who don't seem very interested.. It is not easy to find the right combonation of homrones but when you do it's jackpot! You will feel great. If only we could educate Dr.s especially female Dr.s (they are going to be here too one day).everywomen should read ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars sherri reader with neck pain
Someone bought this book for me from my yoga class and I thought I would pick up a few new tips. It was okay nothing to write home about- maybe good for someone who doesn't know how to exercise. There are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars got me moving again
While no book could replace hands on instruction, this book comes close. This is the book that got me moving again after years of struggle with chronic back pain.Rather than a "one size fits all" approach, the book encourages one to review the evidence of your body and carefully approach the problem.I wonder where I would be if I hadn't run into this book a few years ago.Try it, it may save your back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide!
Very complete book with daily routines in the back. The description of exercises is extremely thorough.Much more complete than many other books out there.I have been through some rough times with my back and shoulders, and have searched widely for guidance to help me take care of myself - this one is a keeper.Doctors and Chiropractors are wonderful - but the ultimate responsibility is ours. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
In 1970 (yes, I'm somewhat of an old fart) I suffered from an acute case of lower back pain. Luckily, Maggie's Back Book was then widely available. It didn't hurt that at that time Maggie also had her PBS show "Maggie and the Beautiful Machine", and thus was well known (certainly, here in Cambridge). I read it while in bed, on my back, and in pain. I decided to resist the doctor's recommendation for a spinal fusion operation. The injury healed over time, with the help of Maggie's good advice.5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book!
If you are having back problems, read this book. I read an earlier edition a long time ago and have followed the recommended exercises ever since. The result: very few episodes of serious back pain in 16 years. Maggie was one of the first people to publicize the importance of exercise for dealing with and preventing back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cultivation of Our Yin Energy is Something That We All Need!
Many of the BIG problems in Health, Psychology and Relationships can be said to originate in an excess of Yang energy. Not just the excesses of aggression, winning, and dominating, but the whole frenetic race toward ever more energy draining and attenton demanding multi-tasking. Our society is becoming progressively more hypomanic and it sometimes seems that it is only a matter of time before everyone will start to show symptoms of attention deficit disorder! Some of the illnesses that are becoming more prevalent, including some of the disorders of immune function, digestion and thermoregulation, can also be thought of as consequences of a rampantand unbalanced Yang force.
5-0 out of 5 stars A superb supplement to exercise and health regimens, offering ideal exercises for warm up and cool down during workouts
Former student of several Taoist masters, founder of the Universal Healing Tao System, and director of the Tao Garden Integrative Medicine Health Spa and Resort Mantak Chia presents Energy Balance Through The Tao: Exercises For Cultivating Yin Energy, an exercise book that incorporates both the Western principles of physical fitness and the Eastern principles of balancing body, mind, and spirit. The goal of Tao Yin is to revitalize body, mind, and spirit by balancing internal and external energies, and help the practitioner become more pure and full of energy. Energy Balance Through The Tao offers 45 Tao Yin exercises to Western readers, each fully illustrated with black-and-white photographs. The exercises promote flexibility, and once mastered, foster improved strength in movements and standing postures. A superb supplement to exercise and health regimens, offering ideal exercises for warm up and cool down during workouts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
I have found "Healing from within with Chi Nei Tsang: Applied Chi Kung in Internal Organs Treatment" to be stacked with relevent information for the practioner and more importantly the beginner. It starts at the basics of the Taoist philosophy towards healing and how the abdomen and five major organs play a vital role. Not only does it give the basic techniques the author also outlines basic Qigong movements and meditations which complement the theory and massage techniques very well. Additionally it provides an overview of what a treatment might be like for the giver and receiver. Be prepared to have patience when learning the techniques and meditations as they cannot be learnt over night. It's not a quick fix but a genuine healing modality.

3-0 out of 5 stars May need some experience to really appreciate this
The applications and theories presented here are good, but a reader may want to read some more basic works first, and gain a little qigong experience in order to truely appreciate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The search
Very interesting, but you have to have the courage to gamble with your health. Yet if you already took a dive from a mountain top "a la Castaneda" you might enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is rare and precious
Richard S said it all, and well. My only additional comment is that the format of this book is structured quite simply, and it is ideal. First, the exact original Chinese text is included. This preserves this rare information, and offers scholars the original words to research themselves. Then, an exact English translation is offered of the Chinese. This can sometime read 'choppy' because it is quite hard to translate between ANCIENT Chinese and modern English - due to the fact that many words and phrases from ancient China only existed in Buddhist Qigong society and were unknown in the Chinese language otherwise.
3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable source material about transforming vital energy
Yang uses Buddhist and Taoist documents, reproduced and translated section by section, to explain the esoteric training methods Yi Jin Jing and Xi Sui Jing. The first method generate qi to strengthen muscles and tendons, the second teaches Huan Jing or how to return vital energy through the spine to energize the brain. Evidently very baffled by certain aspects of these exercises, Yang sometimes has to conjecture. His translation is uncertain, yet this description includes valuable source material withheld in the popular books by Mantak Chia. This is an early work of a prolific writer who could really use an editor, and readers may find the non-standard Cantonese transliterations rather puzzling. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the writings of F. M. Alexander
Several years ago I discovered the Alexander Technique, found a teacher, and got rid of my chronic back pain. The man who dseveloped the Technique, F.M. Alexander, always seemed a mystery to me, particularly after I tried reading his books. This book is an edited version of Alexander's writing that makes them a lot easier to read.It also has a very informative introduction that puts Alexander and his Technique in historical perspective.4-0 out of 5 stars The cream of 4 books on mind-body integration
Got a hurting back or evil golf or tennis swing you can't get rid of? F.M. Alexander found a way to change bad body use and this book describes what it means and how it was discovered. No, reading the book won't cure you. You'll need Alexander lessons, but it will tell you what it's all about. The editor wrote a fine background introduction as well as made an excellent selection from Alexander's books. Just as important, he included three prefaces by John Dewey, the famous educator and philosopher, and also scientific research on the technique. The technique is more than some body process. It really teaches a Western Zenapproach towards all kinds of life problems. Sound strange? Read this book. I'm very grateful I had Alexander lessons and the wisdom it teaches. Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentand responsible introduction to chi gung.
I was introduced to the practice of chi gung through the writings of Daniel Reid--this book and another on traditional Chinese medicine.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners, very concise and explanatory.
For those of you starting to learn Chi Kung, this book will give you thorough information about the whole history, the different practices and forms, and the relation body to universal chi. It?ll also give you explanations about the benefits of practicing Chi Kung for yourself as preventive healthcare as well as how it is used to heal others. It covers the various ways of working with Chi, best locations, best time and environment, and a few sets of daily practices. 1-0 out of 5 stars Born-again chi-gung
I am about half way through this book and am straining not to put it down.It is full of rhetoric reminiscent of born-again literature, which makes me question some validity.Full of fantastical stories and not one reference as to where the information comes from.As far as his allopathic understanding of physiology/biology, it is hashed, at times incorrect and simply doesn't make sense. 4-0 out of 5 stars Relating this book to clinical practice
This book is one of the main sources of ideas and techniques that I currently employ when working in a group scenario. The client base with which I work are mainly adults who are experiencing an acute psychiatric episode. It allows for a large variance in the abilities of clients and invites the practitioner to modify techniques and methods to best suit the group he/she is working with. Most of the activities described require a minimal amount of equipment and the instructions are clearly set out and easy to follow. My only critism is that perhaps it lacks detail in explaining the theory behind some of the more complex groups. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Proven recipe for improved health
As a professional management consultant I have been using this manual for six years. The book contains clear descriptions of all the exercises with photographic illustrations that guide the reader step by step. I personally appreciated the background information that put all the exercises into a life-style context. The marvel of the book is that it does not require any expensive equipment or coaching but rather encourage patience and endurance. The proposed exercises act as a tonic that energises and revitalises the whole body. Anybody from any age group can use Pa Tuan T'sin in their health program. I still experience a surge in vibrancy, agility and mental sharpness as a result from these exercises. As a complete manual expressed with clarity it is sufficient for general health improvement. The serious practitioner will however find that the book does not cover the total depth of the topic and will ultimately augment this book with additional sources of information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Methodically increase health - energy
I bought this book just 3 weeks ago and started practising the pa tuan tsin (eight pieces of brocade) exercise 4 days after. My breathing capacity is gently increasing but the onset of winter will test my sinuses.Lets's hope the recommended PATIENCE, DISCIPLINE, FORTITUDE will hold fast through the cold months.Read more
