5-0 out of 5 stars do not flex the spine
Excellent book.......very detailed and easy to understand.I also find myself very concientious about keeping good posture whilst performing the exercises. "do not flex the spine" goes through my mind so many times during the course of the day, you would be surprised at how often we all do that, and I have learned from this book that, that is not a good thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars sort of disappointed
UPon reading this book, I talked to my Dr. about the exercises 'not recommended'.ie: forward bends and movements similar to those.I have exercised all of my life and maintaining flexibility in my spine is very important. The Dr. said to continue those exercises. Why would one want to NOT keep the spine flexible? It is a good book tho, the exercises are easy to do and it is clearly written and the pictures are helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars packed with good info, exercise section poorly laid out
This is a very informative book, worth the read, but I gave it only 4 stars because of the exercise section. It has LOTS of excellent exercises, but for some reason, they would start an exercise explanation on the right page, then you have to turn the page to continue with it.You end up with the pointer pictures and the don't-do-this pictures of the previous exercise on the same two page spread as the explanatory photos of the next exercise, which is inconvenient and confusing.Would it have been SO hard to publish the book with a few more pages to enable each exercise to be on it's own two-page spread, without encroaching on thenext exercise? This is a great reference book, but they need to make the exercise section more 'user-friendly'. ... Editorial Review

Given the exotic nature of so many bodywork practices, readers will be surprised to learn that they can improve their health and well-being with something as simple as walking. But that's just what Los Angeles physical therapist Brourman asserts here. Walking isn't just a great physical and meditative exercise, she points out, it's the physical activity we do most often. And just as imbalance, poor posture and untoned muscles can lead to painful injuries, correcting the way you walk and strengthening and stretching your muscles can speed your recovery or prevent you from getting hurt in the first place. Because Brourman doesn't have the luxury of seeing every reader personally, a great deal of the book is devoted to diagnosing and solving individual gait problems--something that can be done, she says, because the standards of human symmetry are the same for everyone. "The truth is that height, weight, proportions, age, sex, and all other human features and options don't change the basic elements of a symmetrical walk," she writes. The instructions are reasonably easy to follow (although some readers may be disconcerted by a common experience--when you start thinking about how you Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Need Something for Those Aches and Pains?
Having a variety of foot and leg problems plus being told that I "walk funny," led me to search out this book.Anxious for a quick fix, I wanted to jump right in with exercises targeted to my specific problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book took me from a level 6 of chronic pain to ZERO
I have spent the last five years in agony with a bad ankle. For some strange reason that I didn't understand at that time,(and neither did the two surgeons, one rhematologist, two podiatrists, four physical therapists and countless er docs with whom I consulted over the last thirty years), as I was doing my regular areobic work, I totally ruptured the peroneal longus tendon in my right foot. Two surgeries later I was left with a chronically swollen ankle.I had lost the tendon and the peroneal nerve.Ihad total ankle reconstruction and had my heel bone moved over so my ankle would be more stable. It wasn't.5-0 out of 5 stars Of benefit to everyone who takes a step.
By following the principles in this book, I'm quite sure I have minimized the pain and discomfort of two leg injuries within a year, both requiring a cast - broken ankle requiring surgery and hairline knee fracture, as well as an arthritic hip, all on the same leg. Although I found the technical explanations tough going, I believe I distilled the essence of the instruction into a brand new, better way to walk.I walk my dog twice a day so I slowly incorporated one aspect at a timeinto changing my walk. There is no doubt that my leg muscles are stronger as a result of my redesigned walk. The book leaves no stone unturned with respect to its topic, so I am quite thankful that I discovered this A to Z instructional reference book. ... Read more

I agree with the reviewers who gave low marks....
1-0 out of 5 stars I get the feeling the author wrote these reviews.
Suggestions if you want to waste your money on this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle Reminder and Useful Text for Years
The exercises in this book have been beneficial during stressful times for years ... and included is a great 10-minute sequence of three exercises for daily preventive maintenance and self care. The commentary is helpful, not fluff at all, the instructions are easy to follow, and the illustrations of people doing the exercises are very clear. Editorial Review

Here's a workout with one big difference from all the others: it uses a ball. Among others, the kind of lightweight vinyl ball you often see stacked up in huge cages in toy stores (perhaps the cheapest piece of workout equipment ever). Zake, a yoga teacher and bodywork practitioner, began developing her techniques 20 years ago to help herself recover from a hip injury. She believes that rolling on the ball in various ways stimulates muscles at their origins, causing them to relax and elongate; at the same time, the gentle pressure increases circulation to the muscles and tendons. This in turn helps balance the body and relieve all kinds of painful conditions in the back, neck, shoulders, and legs, as well as improving the results produced by any Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not light reading - A technical book for correcting real musculoskeletal issues
This book is not a good intro into body rolling if you are a lay person. It is designed to present routines to be used as corrective exercises and for training her instructors.
4-0 out of 5 stars Your body will thank you
This is a technical book, as mentioned by the other reviewers. I am a certified personal trainer but I had to think pretty hard sometimes to visualise where I was supposed to be during the exercises. Due to that fact I also purchased Yamuna Zake's second book 'The Ultimate Body Rolling Workout' to fully understand the exercises in lay terms.
5-0 out of 5 stars A breakthrough in self-exploration
This book is not for the person who wants an easy fix.But for anyone willing to put in the time it is just this side of miraculous. You will likely add inches and flexibility to your ribcage - increasing room for your lungs and other internal organs (I added 1-1/2 inches in 3 weeks).Your posture will improve, and as a result, you will likely add to your height (I added 1/2").But best of all, you will look and feel rejuvinated.I have done yoga, weight lifting, walking, running - all the normal stuff.Body Rolling beats it all hands down for relaxing and energizing your body (and face - I added a face routine of my own based on the same principles.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As Concise as It Gets
No-nonsense style, very concise (except for various calculation examples, which might be good, as math literacy is alien concept for most).
3-0 out of 5 stars Another great book
In addition to the Johnson book, people might want to look at the book 'The China Study', a 35 year study of the way various groups in China eat and the affect on their health. It shows that a low-fat whole food diet is absolutely the best for health and healing various diseases.

5-0 out of 5 stars getting down to the heart of the matter
Once again Jim has done the research for the consumer and simplified the search for a succesful weight loss program. He examines the popular myths and plainly states, in his straight-forward way, how to get on track in a manner that anyone could follow. If you are truly interested in losing weight and particularly are confused about the many weight loss programs which abound, I highly recommend that you read this book. I just finished reading this book and found it to be very worthwhile! I would almost say it's a must read for serious students of yoga who want to go "beyond the postures".5-0 out of 5 stars Reviewed for Yoga Journal by Richard Miller, Ph.D
The best course I attended while earning my Ph.D. in psychology was "Theories of Personality."The professor brought the theories to life by describing the lives of each theorist - including people like Freud, Jung, and Maslow. She underscored how all theories grow out of an individual's life experience.5-0 out of 5 stars Personal yoga stories, and wonderful awareness exercises

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful adjunct to Gyrotonic
This year, I experienced an extremely painful bout of sciatica.Although the pain was quickly alleviated through a combination of acupuncture and deep tissue massage, I could sense that a "third leg" of my treatment was missing. My acupuncturist suggested Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis.After taking a dozen Gyrotonic private lessons, I was amazed by the amount of body awareness that had been taught to me, and even more amazed that my body remembered it from lesson to lesson. This book sounded as if it would be able to clarify (at least partially) how this process happens. And indeed it has.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a shock!! I'm that SMALL % with NO improvement
I was doing the 10 week program. After 9 weeks of doing the program, I gave up.. I have not seen any improvement. I would notice something because I can't see anything clear past 7 inches from my face. So forgive me for not doing the 10th week but I don't believe the 10 week is the magical number where everything changes suddenly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Personal review of "Improve Your Eyesight" by James Bellevue
I purchased this book and tape ten years ago and have not yet had to purchase new glasses. The book is very easy to understand and the video is easy to follow with very simple and clear to understand directions.I highly recommend this book to anyone for eye vision improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds
I was a little perplexed by the following two reviews.I do not understand how Mr. Hwang claims the video contains only 3 exercises. There are 16 different exercises on the video tape, some are demonstrated and others are animated graphics which are watched.Maybe Mr. Hwang received a defective video tape, in which case I would request that he return it for a replacement.I assume he didn't watch only the first 5 minutes of the 90 minute video to make his evalution.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books about relaxation
"Total Relaxation" by John R. Harvey, PhD, is one of the most comprehensive yet concise books on the subject of tension and relaxation. Harvey takes the reader on a journey through every system of the body in which tension can occur. He goes into great detail about the possible causes of tension in each system, and helps the readers assess for themselves where and why their own tension resides. Most importantly, Harvey provides detailed instructions for how to release that tension.

I've had this book forever . My therapist loved it and she thought it was a great tool. She started to recommend it to her other patience. I'm diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder. So I dont know how to relax and I'm always up-tight. This book is so easy to follow and it makes so much since. You will notice a difference as soon as you start the medatations. I just love it! I wish Dr. John R. Harvey had a web site.

The exercises, or should I say, relaxation techniques, are outstanding.I'm a soldier, and as you can imagine that the nature of my job tends to place me into tense, stressfull situations. After using the techniques over time, I am able to reach very deep and quite apparent levels of relaxation whenever I can stay still! The CD included with the book is a wonderful guide. The almost hypnotic voice and music is a great teacher.I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a wonderful addition, if not a basis to start to practice the essential life skill of relaxation. ...
