5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
The reviewer below, C Fink, wrote a great review of this book, but I have one comment to add: although the author is a runner and some of the studies he cites are based on runners, the author states clearly that any aerobic exercise is fine.I'm not a runner and as I was reading, I didn't think of it as a running book (I prefer bicycling and hiking/walking).
5-0 out of 5 stars Good News from a Runner's World
I came to Johnsgard's book as a recreational runner with none of the psychological disorders he addresses in his book (none diagnosed, anyway). Actually, the title of this delightful book is something of a misnomer; only one of the four sections deals specifically with mental health. In the other three sections, Johnsgard-a psychology professor and a long-time distance runner-takes what I would call an anthropological view of the sport, addressing, as he does, the history of Homo Sapiens and our natural inclination to run. Johnsgard's book is a training manual, a DSM4, and a natural history all in one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get rid of back pain - FOREVER
Hello All. I am 29 currently and I have had backpain on and off for over 9 years now. After a particularly nasty back spasm at the gym 2 years back ( where I could hardly walk), I was getting desparate. I looked at physiotherapy, and briefly at some other forms of exercise. I could not find lasting results anywhere and then I came across this book. It was god send. I read it in couple of hours flat. Re-read it next day. Thought a lot about what the author suggests are reasons behind the pain. It is generated from within and the cure also should come from within us. Anyone who thinks that cure CAN ONLY come fromoutside is going to be looking for a cure, the rest of their lives. I analyzed the book ( I am an engineer) and trusted the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars 5 years with back pain, no back pain for 6 years.
There I was, 18 years old, after exercising badly in the gym I developed back issues. An x-ray stated I had a back abnormality. For 5 years I had back pain, evey single day, mid to lower back pain. You know whats its like, the type thats always there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Dr. Sarno is a true pioneer in regards to diagnosing and treating back pain and has made a tremendous contribution with his discovery of the mind/body connection for this condition. I did, however, as a number of reviewers have pointed out, after reading Healing Back Pain felt the need for additional steps.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stop aging or slow the process
Some useful information, but nothing you can't get for free on the internet. Book is only 45 pages long and doesn't justify price. I've read a lot of articles by this author, and usually respect his writings and opinions, but am very disappointed in this case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting short read and lots of good info
I have been using oxygen peroxide for quite a few years, not IV therapy or internally, but for ear infections, chronic sinuses, bathing ocassionally, gargling etc. and I can tell you that it does work.As a sufferer of chronic ear and sinus infections 10 yrs. plus after using the peroxide for these they have subsided. NO more antibiotics and no more chronic sinus issues! Maybe I will write a book telling you how effective it actually worked for me. HA! Not really, but I can't say enough about it's effectiveness.
4-0 out of 5 stars Stop Aging or slow the Process using EWOT
This book was very interesting and very easy to read.As far as following his suggestion, it would be a little difficult. But it has put me on the right track and I feel that is what an "info" book should do...make you think about how to make their advise work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but rather technical
Love the book and it's advice but yes, it IS technical and there is alot to go through. Great for general guidelines and specific advice on particular sports and exercises. Plenty of stuff you can do at home if you don't have access to a gym. I'd recommend it to anyone in training!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overall Guidance & Specific Training Tips
The word "comprehensive" seems very fitting for "Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness" because the volume packs in a lot of background information on physiology as well as specific training regimens for particular outdoor sports.I particularly value the icons for different sports used to identify exercises that are particularly valuable for the sport you are preparing for.The final chapters provide focused training regimens for specific sports, which are cross-referenced to the exercise descriptions found in other parts of the book. The book also provides valuable tips on functional exercises that focus on combinations of muscle groups to achieve more practical training than the muscle isolation process used in many weight training machines. All in all, this is one of the very best I've seen for sport-focused training.

2-0 out of 5 stars Take it in moderation
The book is clear and describes a lot of interesting exercises but doesn't translate into a realistic program.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I should have taken it easy with the hype
All of the 5 star reviews of this book made me expect more than I should have, and I was bound for disappointment.First of all, this book has got some big dimensions, so, uh, well I wasn't expecting the pages to be so large and atlas like.I didn't get very much from this book, and the problem might be that I am healthy.I do wear glasses though, so I am currently trying to fix me peepers to a flatter lense. There isn't very much when it comes to the eye exercises though, so let me just give a summary so you can get started right away:5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and definitive: you can create your own miracle
Meir Schneider has truly walked the walk.I have been involved in the alternative healing field for over 18 years and this book is all you need to begin your journey of healing yourself.Working with visualization, exercises, breathing, everything about your life and your habits is addressed in this book.If you are seriously ill or someone you love is, go get this book and start working right away. You will get better. This book is empowering, but if you don't want to spend the time and do the work, you won't use it.This is for those who are eager and ready to take charge of their health and their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Handbook of Self Healing
An essential reference for those who take full responsibility for their health, fitness, and well-being.Detailed discussions cover all the major body systems-skeletal, muscular, nerves, circulatory,etc.- and many debilitating diseases - osteoporosis, diabetes, among others. The suggestions and exercises are thoroughly explained and illustrated. An empowering work. This book would be a wonderful gift for anyone interested in maintaining and improving their health. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
This is the third book I have bought from Ulysses Press, and it is just as good as the other two ("Weight-bearing workouts for women", and "Weights on the Ball workbook" - which is particularly good, and I highly recommend). This book has the Ulysses Press trade-mark 'lay-flat binding' - so useful during exercise, and is well-organized, well-illustrated, very informative, with great exercises and a very nice work-out sequence.Ellie Herman has taken the original Pilates matwork sequence and has adapted it to the exercise ball, with a few additional Pilates exercises thrown in.This is a natural progression from the regular Pilates matwork routine, you can easily and quickly transfer to this program if you are already familiar with the original Pilates matwork. This book is easy to follow, well illustrated, and gives all the usual information associated with Pilates, as well as with using the fitness ball, including important safe-guards.I highly recommend this book.My next Ulysses Press purchase is going to be Ellie Herman's Pilates Props matwork book - based on how good this book is, I know that one is going to be a winner as well. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile in Spite of the Hype
I've done various exercise systems over the years and I'd say this one is far beyond all others in terms of giving a workout to the fingers and wrists, major sources of stress in the computer age. It is also a very methodical system, going step by step; for example, one exercise involves the legs, the next adds arm movements, and then another integrates breathing and visualization.

3-0 out of 5 stars It didn't work for me
I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about Meridian exercises. I thought this sounded interesting based on other reviews. First of all, he divided it in 2 books, so you won't find all the remedies in one and you are almost forced to buy 2. I tried the exercises for headaches and it did nothing to help me. I also tried other exercises, but it's difficult to tell if it does anything since there are no immediate results. He doesn't give any explanation for his selection of exercises except chosen few. Also, some of the exercises are impossible to follow from the description.

4-0 out of 5 stars What is C'hi Kung? What can it does for you?
When I purchased "The Way of HeaIing" I was a hatha yoga practicioner for over 20 years. I was not very impressed with Lam Kam Chuen's exercices, because they seemed silly. However, I started doing the easiest exercices regularly, and after 3 months I was very impressed with the results. I was feeling better than ever, even practicing my yoga exercices. I then started practicing the more difficult exercices, those of Zhan Zuang. Well, after three years I feel really great. At a first glance, doing the exercices seems to be easy. This is not the case at all. It requires a good deal of effort and concentration. But the results are great for one's health, life quality improvement, better sleeping, better work and hapiness. I strongly recommend reading "The Way of Healing" BEFORE reading and practicing the exercices of "The Way of Energy", by the same author. The exercices of "The way of Healing" are easier and prepares your mind and body for the hardest Zhan Zuang exercices, described in "The way of Energy". Try practicising Lam Kam Chen's C'hi Kung exercices regularly (daily) during one year, and I assure that you will be very happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sifu Lam has done it again
After reading Sifu (Master or Teacher) Lam's earlier work "The Way of Energy" I bought this book because it deals more with the healing aspect of Qigong (chi kung). 4-0 out of 5 stars a useful and clear book
As a big fan of master Chuen's previous book, The Way of Energy, I eagerly sought out this book when I learned it was available. It is a very useful companion book to his earlier one, and it stands well on its own, too. Itis a bit simpler in style and information, but contains additional usefulpractices and other interesting tidbits. It seems geared toward a readingaudience that would be more interested in a less intense chi kung regimethan that in The Way of Energy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Become a full partner with your trainer.
Too often those who are really good at something are in such demand for their services that they have little time to provide a complete presentation to explain it all for others.Houglum and the team that assisted in producing this book with its hundreds of photographs and detailed exercise instructions have done so."Why, how, when and what to do," are all spelled out. While the book is intended for sports / rehab professionals, many of the technical terms not familiar to those who are not in the field are provided in a glossary."Theraputic Exercise for Athletic Injuries" is an excellent resource for those who wish to continue to improve their physical condition long after the limited physical rehabilitation provided by insurance coverage is complete. It is almost as good as having Houglum on-line as your own personal trainer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As a journalist and Iyengar Yoga Teacher who uses yoga for people with back problems, I was excited to see this new book by a physician and someone who claims to have studied with BKS Iyengar. The reality was a disappointment for a number of reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ
Whether you have back pain or not, this book is written by two Doctors that know their stuff. Not only it is it one of the most simply written but it also goes into medical detail that would cost you lots. It is presented in a very logical way and easy to follow while getting to the very heart of possible back pain and the exact way to treat it. Even if you are, for some reason, anti-Yoga, this book shows stretches that are directly related to having a healthy and strong back.I would add to the title that the book can also prevent back problems, and this can be as IMPORTANT as ever. PREVENTION as opposed to treating is a blessing and if you have that situation, read this book. Amazingly simple for those unfamiliar to Yoga. Again, A GREAT READ

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
An excellent book, neatly divided into two parts, the first part describing succinctly yoga and back pain and the second part suggesting poses for nine different diagnoses.Having suffered severe crippling leg pains that my general practioner finally diagnosed as relating to my back, I sought relief.Relief in the Stretch opened up a whole new world for me.It suggested Iyengar yoga, a form of yoga that focuses on the accuracy of poses.I started seeing an Iyengar yoga teacher and concurrently reading and rereading this book.I learn that yoga is the right thing for chronic pain.It does indeed "increase flexibility, strengthening muscles and bones, increasing range of motion, sharpening focus, heightening self-awareness, and producing calm."There are numerous helpful medical tidbits, such as when one muscles flexes another muscle relaxes: "every time the biceps contracts . . . its opposite, the triceps . . . must relax." When I tighten my abdominal muscles I relax the muscles in my back, the muscles that are partly the cause of my pain.I learned that a patient has symptoms, i.e. sharp pains in my leg in my case, but that the doctor needs signs todiagnose the cause, i.e. the films from an MRI. Nine different types of back pain are discussed (including Herniated Discs, Arthritis, Sacroliac Joint Derangement, Pirformis Syndrome and Weight Control) with yoga poses for each.Everytime I reread a chapter I discover something new.If you have back problems, this is not just a book to buy, read and shelve in your library.Rather it is also a book that will be a continuing source of information as you work at obtaining long-term relief through yoga. ...
