Editorial Review

Fitness is a lifetime commitment, but you can accelerate results and transform your body in 12 weeks, says Bob Greene, best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer. Not for the "move a little" crowd, this program is intense and challenging, whatever your starting level. "It's a bit like boot camp," Greene acknowledges. You'll do vigorous aerobic exercise 15 (beginning level), 30 (intermediates), or 45 (advanced) minutes 6 days a week, and increase 2 minutes each week--and Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 12 Punishing weeks of kick-butt work!
This book is very similar to another book the author wrote about fitness and dieting. The format is the basically the same with the first 60 pages covering emotional eating and the psychological aspects of dealing with food. The last 30 pages is a survey of current diets such as Atkins, Weight Watchers and others. The middle of the book includes a lot on specific weight-lifting exercises and aerobics. A concept I really like is the 5 Simple Eating Rules, which can be harder than you think. I also appreciated the very descriptive tables outlining the whole 12 week program of exercises. I gave 4 stars because I could have done without the emotional eating and diet survey sections. All that said, it's well written and motivating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great motivation for anyone wanting to get into shape.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for me, maybe for you too...
I have this book and when I followed my diet I lost 12 lbs in 3 months and about 6 or more inches. I didn't think it was too too hard to follow...the hot herbal tea was a little different but drinkable. The great thing about this diet is that no special food products need to be bought and there are great recipes included in the back for each body type. I didn't even follow the diet too strictly and I still saw results. It was great for me so maybe it could work for you too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never has a health book felt so tailored to my needs!
I picked up my first copy of this book several years ago, only to have that and the next 3 copies I obtained for myself 'stolen' by friends and relatives who were amazed at the individual diet/nutrition plans geared toward each body type found in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple techniques create amazing results.
This remarkable little book may change the way you think about knee pain. Instead of focusing on pain symptoms and where they originate, the author focuses on what your knee does - and how to improve those functions with simple exercises. The only anatomy lesson you need is to know where your quadriceps and hamstring muscles are - front and rear of your thigh respectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars what you need and nothing extra
This book doesn't waste your time - it just reports what research says has been effective and then lays out a simple routine of exercises you can do at home, with extensions if you want to go further.I've had good results from following basically the same routine he suggests - it's given me back hope that fifty-year-old knees can survive a running program after all, and it's helped me avoid surgery which probably wasn't needed. It also cut through a lot of conflicting and confusing diagnoses and went straight to advice on how to avoid pain - who cares about the exact cause if it goes away?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Besides being an easy read, I found this book to be a common sense approach to the care of your knees. With disability in both of my knees, I found the author's approach very beneficial and would highly recommend this book to anyone with knee problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So much information for less than a co-pay
I am so grateful for this book.I woke up one Sunday morning unable to stand due to severe pain in my upper back and right shoulder.I had an MRI which showed a herniated disk and bulging disks in my neck.I saw an orthopedic doctor and a neurosurgeon, neither of whom provided me with detailed information about my condition. ("You have a ruptured disk.") I got prescriptions for Motrin and physical therapy, and that was about it.When I got this book, I read almost the whole thing in one sitting.Just understanding the anatomy and physiology of my condition was comforting.I have been recovering, and I refer to this book often for information and suggestions.I highly recommend it to anyone with severe neck pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Book, my headaches are gone!
This book is amazing. I did regularly for a week the series of "First Aid Neck Exercises" and my neck related headaches went away.It is super simple to understand and very educational.I know a lot more about necks now.My massage therapist, who has a herniated disk in the neck, is now practicing the exercises and he has seen much improvement. If you have pain in your neck, BUY THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for anyone with neck problems
This book is a truly complete guide to explaining and treating neck problems. Written by an MD in easily understandable language, it does not stop at discussing classical remedies physicians offer for spine problems. It incorporates and validates non-classical methods such as chiropractic manipulations and acupuncture. The best part are the chapters on physical therapy: The exercises are clearly explained and can be understood and performed with or without professional help. I had serious neck pain with nerve involvment, which made it impossible for me to lie on my back without pain. Within a month of doing the exercises(on my own), I am completely pain free and back to my former activities. All of this without one doctor's visit. What a bargain! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is th BEST!
I suffer with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis in my entire body! With inflammation in my entire body, mobility is very very limited! I tried these exercise every morning for a week. I couldn't believe how much my mobility had improved in that week. Now I do the exercises everyday at least twice a day. This book is definetly worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Does Work
After checking ARTHRITIS:WHAT EXERCISES WORK out of the library for the third time in a year, I broke down and bought it.It's terrific. The exercises are tied to specific joints, ranging from the small, fingers and toes, on to shoulders, hips, knees, etc. Some you can even do in bed, but many are much more challenging--there is a range.Doing these for just a couple of weeks increased my flexibility tremendously--washing my back, tieing my shoes, and so forth much easier. And I'm a 53 year old professional female who is in "good shape" with aerobics and strength training--but the targeted flexibility/joint exercises here were new to me.I highly, highly recommend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Treatment of CP
What an excellent new resource this author has provided us with! This book is very well organized and thoughtfully researched to provide the most updated information and answers to parents most burning questions as well as give ideas and advice to parents and professionals. Most books focus heavily on the difference between normal motor development (some of which children with CP will not be able to achieve) and the motor and muscle abnormalities of children with CP but are usually not as positive as this one. I especially enjoyed the optimism with which this book was written and the guidelines it gave for reaching realistic goals. It was niceto see a discussion of newer treatments such as SDR and ITB Therapies as well. Destined to become a classic work!

5-0 out of 5 stars An instructional reference guide to anyone with a motor skills impaired child
Teaching Motor Skills To Children With Cerebral Palsy And Similar Movement Disorders: A Guide For Parents And Professionals by Sieglinde Martin (a physical therapist with more than thirty years experience working with children having cerebral palsy) is a superbly organized and expertly presented "hands-on" resource specifically designed for parents, therapists, and other caregivers working with young children exhibiting gross motor delays for the purpose of providing such youngsters with motorskills practice outside of formal therapy sessions. The outlined and illustrated exercises include the issues of head control, protective reactions, proper positioning, independent sitting (with and without arm support), transitional movements, daily stretching, improving muscle strength and coordination, balance training, and gait training. Included in the text are anecdotes and the answers to frequently asked questions. Teaching Motor Skills To Children With Cerebral Palsy And Similar Movement Disorders is confidently recommended as an instructional reference guide to anyone with a motor skills impaired child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Ten years later, this book still comes in handy! Everything from accent reduction to improving the quality of your speaking voice is covered in Dr. Crannell's text. I highly recommend this book to anyone who uses his/her voice often- particularly for work. Voice and Articulation would also be extremely useful for a person studying English as a second language. This is one book you need when it comes to the voice and how it is used/misused.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Unleashed
This is a great book with Harvey at times unleashing his full venom at the medical profession, food industry and fellow dieticians. He is speaking up for the truth and I happen to believe him. Why? Because I have tested and followed the Fit for Life principles myself and they work.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is an absolute must read!
If you are at all interested in learning how to have complete and total control of your own health and how to confidently and easily live a sickness, pain and disease free life this book is definitely for you. In a climate of ever increasing statistics of disease and ill-health the clear and simple ideas of this book are nothing short of a Godsend. Since the medical profession, the single biggest industry in this country, makes the enormous amount of money that it does by the population being and remaining sick and full of disease they would have us believe that living a healthy disease free life is totally beyond our control. Well, thanks to the brilliant, yet extremely simple methods put forth by this author, the reader is able to take his/her health back into their own hands and truly live without sickness pain or worry of most, if not all diseases. The information in this book is as simple and easy to understand as it is groundbreaking. This book could and should change the world and the way people view cancer, sickness, pain and other diseases. The author explains in remarkably common sense and simple terms exactly how to take total control of your health, vitality and weight by using your body's lymph system (which the author explains is the body's garbage collector). He clearly points out that like a car, our body is a machine, a complex living machine and that after a while due to residue of foods we eat, toxins, chemicals and pollutants in foods, spent cellular material, and other wastes our bodies become "silted up" and require an "oil change" so to speak just like our cars do, otherwise sickness plagues us and disease begins to form. Not only is the information in the book groundbreaking and life changing, but the author, Harvey Diamond, who is known for his humorous and entertaining writing style, delights and entertains the reader with a book that I could not put down until I found myself finishing the last page. I recommend this book to absolutely everyone who can read and who desires to be healthy, energetic and disease free and truly feel this book could turn around the entire cancer and disease epidemic in this country and put the power of your own health back into people's own hands where it belongs! Not reading this book is just like turning your back on a pile of gold the size of a mountain. Thank you Harvey Diamond!

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

I read this book as an alternative healing book for a course I took.It is easy reading.I tried the QiGong and the healing foods.I only lost two pounds and a pants size.I have regained my sense of balance, my emotions have become more stable and I sleep through the night now without waking up.Those results are more important to me than the weight loss.I am excited about the results and plan to continue.I have plenty more weight to lose, so I will continue what the book suggests. It was the easiest non-diet I have ever done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting info.
Typical of diet books with lots of info that you hurry through to get to the meat of it. Pun not intended. Well researched and good diet to follow to get started on the program.

2-0 out of 5 stars you can get better info for free on the net
this book confused me. why did it need to be so mathmatically challenging?i don't want formulas and percentages.....just tell me what to do and how to do it. this plan is a good one, and i found better, easier to follow info on the net for free. i'm using maybe 5 pages out of this entire book to supplement the info i found. find it on clearance or borrow someone's copy.

Who better to write a health and fitness book than Jack Lalanne--a man in his 90s who practiced what he has preached for years. His is probably the most reputable advice considering his longevity. The book was an enjoyable and informative read.
