I bought this book for my mother who needed a hip replacement.Both my mother and I found it very helpful because it describes so clearly the experiences that patients have.It prepared us well for her operation and recovery.

This book is great if you're looking for beneficial exercises you can do in the comfort of your home with minimal equipment. I had never used an exercise ball , so I was pleasantly surprised with the fun and intensity this added to my workouts. I have yet to see what the program does long term, but I have to say overall the book is excellent for exercise instruction and even motivational purposes. The only beef I have is that the nutritional segment is really not even a blip on the radar. I guess I was hoping for more in-depth information than just youarewhatyoueat and one sample menu . Other than that, I'm glad I bought the book!

A fun and motivational book with great advice. Mark Jenkins' personal story is inspiring and the text is easy to read and understand. However, there is a glaring error in the section on how to calcualte your percent body fat.

I did this program for about 5 months and I lost 35 lbs and 3 dress sizes (180lbs to 145lbs; size 14/16 to size 8/10).I was ravenously hungry at first, but the copious amounts of water recommended as well as the daily snacks took the edge off.3-0 out of 5 stars it worked, as long as I put up with feeling hungry
This plan did make me lose weight and inches during the two+ weeks I was on it, but I almost constantly felt hungry, even with the snacks. When a friend came for an extended visit, I was relieved to have the excuse to get off the program. If you're willing to follow a strict eating plan to lose weight, try this: follow the G-index diet instead of Darden's, but follow Darden's guidelines for exercise and water consumption (during the two weeks before I started the diet, I lost about four pounds just from drinking the copious amount of water he suggests). I found that the G-index plan left me feeling satisfied even though the calorie count was the same as Darden's diet. ... Read more

Great book. Descriptive color pictures on how to perform the exercises is very helpful. This book walks you through each body part. You can work through a program of one particular part or a whole body work out program. One downfall, the whole body work out is meant to be preformed in a gym; wish this wasn't so. The other programs show you exercises for home and gym.

Much of the book is dedicated to getting around on crutches.Under "Fitting of Crutches" Pryor states "All too frequently crutches are fitted improperly - generally too long - even by trained personnel."This is exactly what happened to me.I was nearly falling off the crutches every "swing-through" step.I fitted the crutches per instructions.By the next day I had the swing-through step down.By the next week I was successfully practising "non-weight bearing" stair climbing.This made a huge difference to me as my bedroom is on the second floor and the kitchen and living room are on the bottom floor.The detail of the book is wonderful for doing things the first (few) times.Keep re-reading.All that detail makes perfect sense when you are learning.Some of the hints are counter-intuitive and this saves you the trouble of doing it wrong or getting discouraged and giving up.I really wish the hospital had given me this book.

I agree, every orthopaedic patient should leave the hospital with this book! My only wish is that I'd had it sooner after discharge.Helps with topics other titles just don't cover, like flying while disabled, etc.

It's not just another "Lose weight - Eat healthy" book. The fresh mental approach offered in this book also helped me in other areas that I feel needed improvement. It has also become my "Lose debt - Spend healthy" guide that I refer back to if I feel I'm "losing control". It has helped me gain a new, healthy perspective in many aspects of my life.

My wife read this and left it on the bedside table. I picked it up late one night in a desperate attempt for an insomnia cure. I got hooked a few pages into it. It's not your typical fad or jargon filled weight-loss book. As an engineer myself, I found her steady, long-term, practical and realistic approach very appealing. You might have to muscle through (or skip) some of the detailed technical or "journaling" stuff, but you can easily get back to the meat of the book. Weight loss with her approach won't happen quick, but it will probably stay off forever.Reading further, I discovered that the book was really about getting what you want out of life. It's about succeeding. It's about being happy. It's about the journey. It's comforting yet requires that you take responsibility and control. Even if you don't need to lose weight, it's worth a read.

Having just had my hip replaced one week ago I thought this book was too silly. An 80 year old in rehab might get a kick out it's attempt at humor but a 40 year old with a wife and 3 children trying to make it ondisability needs alittle more insight on the real life mental aspects ofhip replacement surgery. Paul's description of his days in the hospitalwere accurate but over dramatized. I believe a woman giving birth has ittougher that a hip replacement patient. But on the plus side reading thisbook may have inspired me to write my own book.

Finding simularities between the book and my own experiences gave me a smile to my face more than once.Why live with the pain as I had both of mine replaced as soon as I could.Paul gave a lighter side to theoperation and recovery.The book was, I believe, to give one personsexperience with total hip replacement and was not to be the "do ityourself" type book that some wanted it to be.

I found the "yellow" pages of the book (which were the majority) to be vacuous and not humorous at all. In fact, I found much of it offensive.. The "white" pages were somewhat informative, but whywrite a book on this subject and say things like "but I will spare youthe details of that" .... I want the details before I have the surgery! ...
