5-0 out of 5 stars energetic understanding
Wow! After reading this book I could actually understand how this type of cooking affects me energetically. Getting in touch with the yin and yang of food and literally feel it affect me has been an invaluable experience. Ms. Porter expression of macrobiotics is clear enough that I could 'get' it through even just one day of eating macro and now I am hooked. Thank you for your honest, open hearted and enthusiastic guide, I will happily refer to it for a long, long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and fun way to go macro
This book was a godsend for me. I have been interested in macrobiotics since I first became aware of it through Madonna (cheesy, I know, but Jessica Porter talks about her a lot, too!). At that time, I didn't get the philosophy part of it and wasn't willing to cut out dairy and sugar. Well, now I am and was reluctant to get into macrobiotics because I had found the info on it dry and confusing. That is why I loved this book! It helped me understand macro and I also love that the author is very forgiving. Great book! If you are even remotely interested (especially if you're just "remotely" interested) give this book a chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book!
I was macro quite a few years ago, but had let it fall to the wayside. When I considered taking it up again, I came across this book.I had some reservations, but the reviews were all so positive that I gave it a shot.I'm so glad I did!I read it continually for almost a month!I skipped around reading chapters that interested me at first, but eventually discovered the entire book was well worth poring over.It makes macrobiotics extremely accessible and I love that she writes about her own experiences and failings on the road to becoming macrobiotic. It took off the pressure I was putting on myself to overhaul my life and go "whole hog" all at once.It let me know it's okay to stumble along the way!The recipes are also great, as are the resources in the back of the book.If you're a westerner and considering macrobiotics, give this book a try. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great ab workout, the rest, well.....
This book has great ab routines, although it took me a bit to organize them all into a workout. Its kinda like the authors threw all the pages of the book into the air, then glued them together and put a cover on it. However once you actually find the routines, they are good. Although I would get another strength training routine, one that may not have the best abodominal excercises and combine it with this book. The rest of the stuff in the book was usless to me, and most training routines, that I've seen, dont really have a great ab/core workout. Bottom line; you get the best for your core, and you can dump the rest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas presented in poorly organized manner
The basic premise of the book is conditioning the abdominal, low back, and hip muscles such that the whole body mass is stabilized during activity. That great idea is over inflated with the word "core" that the authors overuse redundantly and apply it to the mind, body, anatomy, and eating. The simple format of writing style, short chapters, and plenty of the authors' well tested advices, render the book invaluable source of information on effective fitness practice.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource For Total Core Training
This book covers it all.

My husband and I are both starting to experience pain in the morning with our hips.A friend recommended this book and it has been very helpful for the exercises it offered. We have been doing them and feeling much better.Better than surgery!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written good book for those new to hip
In this book you will find both information regarding the anatomy of the hip and its disorders, and important guidelines
1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
All this information is on the internet or available from your doctor. After many years of struggling with hip pain the water exercises are no surprise.Nothing in the book is new.I was very disappointed, if I could do the exercises listed, I wouldn't need the book.Good luck to all of you, go to the local Y or swim therapy, put the money to good use for a good therapist, hips are not do it yourself. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not really about choices
As a potential candidate for hip replacement, I was eager to read the book to learn more details about how to compare and contrast the different options.Unfortunately I didn't get this from the book.Instead, it's almost an historical summary of this woman's step-by-step process through surgery.I hoped for so much more.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Bio
I bought this book hoping for an objective assessment of the benefits of hip replacement versus hip resurfacing. It does not come close to the promise of its title.Basically, it is a description of the author's experience, which, though valid, does not provide an objective perspective. There are a few useful words of advice, but overall this book is an advocacy platform for resurfacing.Having said that, I did give an extra star because I now feel more compelled to look further into resurfacing than I would have otherwise done.

1-0 out of 5 stars Informational, but not well written and over priced
This book is presented as a brief bio of the journey the author went through to find a solution to back and hip pain.It is a quick read, and you will find tidbits of information regarding total hip replacement surgery verses hip resurfacing.Since it is a personal account, there is relatively little medical information except for some drawn diagrams and a forward by her surgeon. If you can get past the poor grammar and poorly contructed sentences, this may well be a book you can use. I was looking for a book with an emphasis on these two medical procedures. I found that I had to sift through the personal accounts of her own experience to gleen what information I could that might pertain to my situation. It is encouraging to see her results as portrayed in the pictures of her post surgery pilates classes. As the author well says on many occasions, the information regarding both total hip replacement surgery and hip resurfacing surgery is readily available on the internet. The actual procedure called hip resurfacing is so new in the United States you will hardly find a physician who will perform it, much less an insurance company who will pay for it.It isn't terribly helpful to know the author had to travel to Belgium (all at her own expense) to have this procedure done on her hips, as most of us simply cannot afford this option.Save the money you would spend on this book, and search the internet for information instead. ... Editorial Review

Fitness guru Denise Austin helps you "zero in on your personal trouble spots" while increasing metabolism with this 6-week exercise and eating program. Her formula includes toning workouts that target the waist, thighs, abs, buttocks, hip, lower back, and upper arms; regular walking and stretching; and eating strategies (not dieting). Her tips are refreshingly sensible: Avoid chronic dieting (it hurts your health and makes you fatter), stretch to decrease stress, fill up on high-fiber foods, eat a balanced diet, build muscle to increase calorie-burning, and walk almost every day. Austin's clearly illustrated and varied exercises use body weight, dumbbells, resistance bands, or a stability ball. A sample exercise schedule takes 15 to 60 minutes a day. For especially busy days, she offers a series of exercises that work two or more muscle groups at once.Austin's "Shrink-Fat Eating Plan" emphasizes portion control, 1,400 to 1,800 calories, and a nutritional breakdown of 24 percent "good" fat, 20 percent protein, and 56 percent high-quality carbs. Whether you just want a foundation to get started or you need a structured, daily program (including menu plans, shopping lists, and daily logs), you can find it here. Profiles of happy and successful followers of the program add interest. Highly recommended. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read and very informative
I have read a lot about this subject, yet still learned more.Goes into detail, yet the writing is very easy to read -- slight humor included -- and warnings about areas you might want to skip if you are squimish. Also, good description about how to find a doctor -- the advice rang true to my experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candid and detailed
Because I am considering a knee replacement, this book had lots of helpful info. There were plenty of details and excellent suggestions for dealing with knee/hip replacement issues.I had already done considerable research, but this book went significantly beyond what I had learned.Written in an interesting manner and by an "insider" who seeks to inform rather than having an ax to grind with other doctors.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and I read Doctor Grelsamer's book prior to undergoing knee replacement surgery.I had also read several others. His was by far the most complete and answered all my questions.I didn't feel like I was entering surgery unawares.I highly recommend this book if you are thinking about knee replacement surgery. ... Editorial Review

Given the exotic nature of so many bodywork practices, readers will be surprised to learn that they can improve their health and well-being with something as simple as walking. But that's just what Los Angeles physical therapist Brourman asserts here. Walking isn't just a great physical and meditative exercise, she points out, it's the physical activity we do most often. And just as imbalance, poor posture and untoned muscles can lead to painful injuries, correcting the way you walk and strengthening and stretching your muscles can speed your recovery or prevent you from getting hurt in the first place. Because Brourman doesn't have the luxury of seeing every reader personally, a great deal of the book is devoted to diagnosing and solving individual gait problems--something that can be done, she says, because the standards of human symmetry are the same for everyone. "The truth is that height, weight, proportions, age, sex, and all other human features and options don't change the basic elements of a symmetrical walk," she writes. The instructions are reasonably easy to follow (although some readers may be disconcerted by a common experience--when you start thinking about how you Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Need Something for Those Aches and Pains?
Having a variety of foot and leg problems plus being told that I "walk funny," led me to search out this book.Anxious for a quick fix, I wanted to jump right in with exercises targeted to my specific problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book took me from a level 6 of chronic pain to ZERO
I have spent the last five years in agony with a bad ankle. For some strange reason that I didn't understand at that time,(and neither did the two surgeons, one rhematologist, two podiatrists, four physical therapists and countless er docs with whom I consulted over the last thirty years), as I was doing my regular areobic work, I totally ruptured the peroneal longus tendon in my right foot. Two surgeries later I was left with a chronically swollen ankle.I had lost the tendon and the peroneal nerve.Ihad total ankle reconstruction and had my heel bone moved over so my ankle would be more stable. It wasn't.5-0 out of 5 stars Of benefit to everyone who takes a step.
By following the principles in this book, I'm quite sure I have minimized the pain and discomfort of two leg injuries within a year, both requiring a cast - broken ankle requiring surgery and hairline knee fracture, as well as an arthritic hip, all on the same leg. Although I found the technical explanations tough going, I believe I distilled the essence of the instruction into a brand new, better way to walk.I walk my dog twice a day so I slowly incorporated one aspect at a timeinto changing my walk. There is no doubt that my leg muscles are stronger as a result of my redesigned walk. The book leaves no stone unturned with respect to its topic, so I am quite thankful that I discovered this A to Z instructional reference book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
Kudos to Irwin Silber!
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and reassuring
The very notion of hip replacement surgery can be frightening to the patient who is not emotionally and mentally prepared for the event. Having had both of my hips replaced within a five-month period, I was lucky to have found Silber's helpful guide ahead of time. It answered many of my questions, educated me on issues I had not considered, and also made me feel less alone and frightened. I have recommended it to other hip replacement patients as one of the best books out on this topic. Arming yourself with knowledge helps ease the fear and paves the way for quicker recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
In my quest to educate myself before my hip replacement, this was the first book I selected. The fact that the book addresses knee replacement as well is a plus, as I suspect that many who need hip replacement will atsome time also need knee replacement.I enjoyed the detail of what toexpect, the enthusiasm of the writer and the resulting feeling of "Ican DO this!"Since I'll be recovering at my mom's, I sent a copy toher so she'll know what's going on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend Getting Hip
With the active life style created by competitive sports and aerobics, along with injuries, the need for THR is becoming more common. Gettig Hip provides well researched and valuable insight into the do's and dont's of having a THR. Although everyone's journey has their own story, Sigrid MacDonald's story is honest, engaging and one that many will be able to relate to going through similiar circumstances. The book also talks about hip resurfacing, which is an interesting alternative, and gives many tips for recovery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Getting Hip:by Sigrid Mac Donald
I thought the book was very scarey in the author's view of her hip replacement. She seemed to have a lot of other problems, not only physical but mental. I bought the book for my husband who is having the surgery in the near future. This book was so negative and disheartening,I never let him read it.He did read two other books which were much more informative, and written in a more positive format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on the money
Yesterday's Globe and Mail had an excellent article by Margaret Wente. She talked about the difficulty that she experienced as a patient within the Canadian health-care system.Fortunately, she is a well-renowned journalist, thus, she was able to use her power and influence to expedite her medical care.Had she not done so, she would have been in my position or that of Miss Macdonald, who had to wait 18 months for hip surgery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not much about hips and spine, but still a good read
While you shouldn't look here for much insight into the relationship between your feet and your hips and spine, it is still a worthy read to understand and address problems with foot function. He discusses the muscles and bones of the feet, shoes that harm, how to choose good shoes, the benefits and evils of foot support, and treatment alternatives. This is not a how-to exercise book, although he does include an exercise or two for stretching.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all levels of bellydancing!!!
I have been bellydancing for over 2 years now and I own dozens upon dozens of bellydance DVDs and a few books. I absolutely love this book and the cd is just fantastic. I am constantly recommending this book and all of Rania DVDs to everyone I know who is interested in bellydance. Everything about this book is informative and encouraging! Because of her DVDs and book, I am so proud to say I bellydance!

5-0 out of 5 stars A straightforward introduction to bellydance moves
The creator of the wildly popular "Bellydance Fitness for Weight-Loss" video series presents Bellydancing For Fitness: The Sexy Art That Tones Your Abs, Butt, And Thighs, a straightforward introduction to bellydance moves that can be incorporated into a solid and beautiful exercise workout. Full-color photographs clearly illustrate warm-up stretches, basic movements and poses, and offer suggestions for putting it all together into a dance routine. The texts describe what to do and how to do in detail, and an accompanying music CD offers 40 minuts of modern, enthusiastic bellydance music to get one started shaking the fat away! A delightful and effective guide to enhancing physical fitness and sex appeal alike.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to the world of bellydance
This is a great book, with tons of gorgeous pictures and info about starting bellydance.Rania is also gorgeous, but not in an intimidating way, so you feel like you could be just as sexy as she is by bellydancing. This book and the one by Tamalyn Dallal definitely have a place on my bookshelf now, and the CD that comes with this book, which is full of great songs to get you started, has an almost permanent home in my CD player. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who Knew?
I remember picking up this book at a thrift store and the low price tag and of couse title caught my eye. At the time, I was pretty sceptical but, I started doing what Wendy says in her book and it actually worked! I have almost every book on how to slim your thighs but this is one of themost effective I've ever tried. It's realistic in it's approach and I was pleased with the results. It worked as well as ballet class did when I was younger. If you're able to pick up a copy do it! I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for pursuing plastic surgery
This is a great book if you are thinking about any kind of body plastic surgery. It has great descriptions and pictures.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
The book is only superceded by it's author!Dr. Hurwitz is a genius, and truly cares about his patients. I have many health problems and see many physicians, but none seem to care about or love what they do as he does. He is a perfectionist, and studies his finished work carefully.I am from Pittsburgh, and he repaired work i had done by another surgeon here. You have no idea the work he had to do! Yet he performed the surgery beautifully and was extremely fair cost wise. It has only been a month since my abdominoplasty/liposuction, and I am healing beautifully and ready for my cruise next month.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE TOTAL BODY LIFT
The TOTAL BODY LIFT by Dr. Dennis Hurwitz is a must read by anyone who is considering having gastric bypass and for those doctors who treat the obese. It not only gives in great detail all the procedures done in the Total Body Lift but also give excellent information on gastric bypass. There are very detailed drawings of the procedures with before and after photo's. I personally have had the Total Body Lift done by Dr. Hurwitz after losing 175 pounds. It is a most amazing transformation. After being overweight since I was 7 years old and continued to gain after each child, I have never been an average weight. After that extreme weight loss there was a lot of hanging skin, though pleased that I looked better and was the healthiest I have ever been; still I was not happy with how my body looked. After the Total Body Lift, the skin was tight and I had a figure, now fitting into a size 10 jean was just incredible.Dr. Hurwitz is a brilliant surgeon that combines plastic surgery with art. To be able to transform all the hanging skin into a nice looking figure after so many years of obesity is truly amazing. In addition to his skill, his wonderful bedside manner, warm personality and his wonderful staff I feel like I am part of the family. He is truly a unique individual that we (the ex-obese) are so fortunate to have. Thank you Dr. Hurwitz for my amazing transformation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I bought this book prior to hip surgery. It saw me all the way through the process, and I'm now doing the recommended exercises.I've had a super fast recovery, and credit the book so much that I purchased two more for my hippy friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars alternative to hip replacement surgery
I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery. The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge"prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability.A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips", which is also available from Amazon.com

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
if you have arthitis of the knee or hip, this book is a must have. i had a total hip replacement four weeks ago, and this book was my pre and post op bible. the o.t. at the hospital saw me reading it and asked to borrow it. it will now be standard reading for all of her patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Chick - A Hip Guide to Everything Om
My neice and I LOVED this book.It gave us something to work on together besides arguing about the messy state of her bedroom and how often she gets to drive my car.Besides the poses, which were challenging and fun, we especially loved the section called "Going with the Yoga Flow."We didn't feel overwhelmed, which we sometimes have when looking at some other yoga books. Doing the practices is great "us" time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, fun to do
This book is fun to read and fun to do -- and it's more than just yoga and breathing exercises.Great ideas here on everything from eating well to looking beautiful, at much more than the superficial level. This is a wonderful gift for any girl (or woman) who wants to have "style, strength and serenity."

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Chick Is Right-On!
The enormous amount of pressure and stress our teenagers place upon themselves, in reaction to the real pressure we adults place on them, seems particularly acute with girls. All of our teenage daughters can benefit from Yoga Chick, no matter how deeply they get into it.
