Editorial Review

Where you start reading this book will probably say a lot about your currentstation in life. New parents will probably skip right to chapter 12 and the section subtitled"Tips for Exhausted Parents of Newborns, Infants, and Children." Drowsyoffice workers might go for chapter 9, which explores the subject of midday naps (whichmay reduce stress and the risk of heart disease). Other chapters look at traveling (driving, jet lag), shift work, and insomnia and other sleep disorders. Dr. James Maas has spent 34years lecturing to drowsy psychology undergraduates at Cornell University, and knowshow to hold an audience--even when the subject is sleep, and even when the conclusion isthat most of us don't get enough of it. This is a fascinating book; you'll want to take it inslowly and then sleep on it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read...some useful advice for the peak performer!
I picked up this book in a used bookstore, again instinctively, after having read Veronique's The Art of Doing Nothing & William Anthony's The Art of Napping. Although the book does not offer really cutting-edge stuff, I find it fascinating, as it offers some useful advice for the peak performer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Power Sleep by Maas
A main thesis of the work is that sleep is critical to peak
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a waste of money but not what I expected
I liked this book in a lot of ways, but when it ended, I was dissappointed. There is worthwhile information about sleep and interesting quotations from famous people about sleep but there seemed to be a lot of filler in this book. The book throws out many statistics but rarely explains how these stastics were obtained.I also thought the book contained too many horror stories about deaths related to people falling asleep while operating heavy machinery etc.,.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A blend of fitness and self-defense
I have to start by saying that I love this concept.I am so tired of hearing products pushed in the fitness industry. The latest ab machines, cardio machines, etc. are all pushed as if no decent workout existed prior to their invention.David Kahn gives his readers a path to a phenomenal workout using nothing more than a few feet of space and their own body. Now there is NO excuse. You have enough room to perform these workouts in your own hotel room, and if you don't you can always walk outside.
5-0 out of 5 stars And after 30 pounds less....
I originally got into Krav Maga as a mean to help me reduce weight while doing some type of "useful" workout.I mean by useful some type of workout that I could get something out from it besides the original purpose of losing weight. In this case it was personal defense.
5-0 out of 5 stars The very best Krav Maga book you can buy!!
A truly inspirational book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Green is Great
I had read several accounts of Ann Wigmore's life changing experience with wheatgrass and other fresh fruits, so I decided to give it a try. With my first wheatgrass kit, I got this book. I was so impressed, that I gave it to a friend of my girlfriend, who was dying from cancer along with a tray of wheatgrass and my old hand juicer.A year later, she's still around and I'm buying myself another copy of Ann's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If it is as good as described, all should be doing this.
Simply amazing what is described in here. My whole family is exited to start doing this. Can't share any experiences since I am purchasing the required items to start growing wheatgrass.
5-0 out of 5 stars the fountain of youth is green
Ann Wigmore, the author of many books on the value of a raw food diet, initially found herself at 50 years old with many debilitating physical problems, and remembered how her grandmother had used grasses to heal the soldiers in WWI, and decided to experiment with their curative properties. Wigmore was a vibrant 76 when she wrote this book in 1985, with her weight the same as it was in her youth, and her hair returned to its natural brown. She explains everything you need to know about wheatgrass, and there is a lot to know about this most basic of all plants.

Editorial Review

If this book is to lay any claim to authenticity, it must make one point clear above all others. It is this: By persistent and sustained practice, anyone and everyone can make the yoga journey and reach the goal of illumination and freedom. Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus lie in the hearts of all. They are not film stars, mere idols of adulation. They are great inspirational figures whose example is there to be followed. They act as our role models today. Just as they reached Self-Realization, so may we.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended
From the first minute I opened this book I realized it was a treasure. "Light on Life" follows the same track asPatangali's Yoga Sutras in it's content without following it's structure in form. Mr. Iyengar personalizes the Yoga Sutra teachings with stories from his own life's struggles/tragedies/blessings and in doing so brings the timeless message of the Sutra's into modern perspective. His writing style is direct and sincere as he shares the wisdom he has gained through his life in Yoga. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I bought this with David Swensen's book and the two complement each other well. The pictures are really great, and there are useful highlighted tips. I haven't used it as much in practice as Swensen's book because it doesn't stay open as well (the binding is more difficult than the spiral of Swensen's book), but the information conveyed is useful and well done. Good Choice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ashtanga Yoga: The Definitive Step-by-Step Guide to Dynamic Yoga
The book has good step by step instructions however the instructions are for advance yogis.A beginner or someone who has been doing yoga for a short time would find it difficult to do the majority of the poses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get It
This book has been my companion since I began practicing Ashtanga Yoga.John's detailed and thorough description of the vinyasa and poses are extremely helpful both as a student and, now, as an Ashtanga teacher.I now use it as an occasional reference but remember when I would consult it almost daily in order to refine my practice.I highly recommend this text as one of the only "pure" Ashtanga books, ideally complimented by taking Ashtanga classes if you can.A++. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sole Sisters
I read this book in one sitting! I purchased the book for two running friends of mine and they passed it on to other fellow runners. This book helped me to think less about the physical act of running, but more about why I run and the friendships I have established while running. Those relationships have been a wonderful source of support and inspiration, very much like the wonderful stories told in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold coins
The vignettes within this book are poignant, touching, and downright real. One of my running friends handed this to me after a 12-mile Sunday morning trek, one (which like many others) allowed us to vent, analyze, and think about our lives. Reading this compilation truly drew me in, both as a runner and a woman. But don't let the chick peg fool you. My husband, who's been a runner for more than 25 years, picked it up and agreed: This is some solid, effective writing that rewards its readers with gold coins throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running is life.
The stories in "Sole Sisters" demonstrated a hidden dimension of life that is revealed through running- unshakable relationships formed with running buddies, self confidence discovered through training and kicking that 5K in the butt, and dissolving problems with each step along the trails. We can all learn from these stories. Everyone, not only runners, should read this gem of abook. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I almost wonder if I have the same book as the other reviewers.I found this book very difficult to use. The chapters go on and on with theory and philosophy, but very little in the way of simple to follow exercises. Also, the book assumes you are already familiar with Yoga and are comfortable doing long stretching exercises before you begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars experiencing our bodies as architecture
This brilliantly written and illustrated book introduces yoga students, both beginners and masters, to the design principles that make the structure of the human body such a work of art.I have taken a workshop from one of her students, and find her approach to yoga much gentler than other forms of the discipline, more attuned to the body's own structural engineering. The book is a delight to browse in as a coffee table book, or to study as a serious guide. It is also a triumphant resistance against ageism!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Inspirational Yoga Book
This is not so much a technique, how-to book.It is more about the spirit of yoga. It's beautiful pictures and wonderful meditations on the meaning or intentions of the poses illustrates and deepens an understanding of yoga and meditation. There are three parts to the book. The first part takes up the majority of the book (125 pages). It's called "the Story of Stories" and is about the philosophy of yoga. The second part called "The Asanas" is about 34 pages. It is where the poses are illustrated through drawings and photographs and described in short paragraphs.I would not recommend it as the sole source for beginners, however, it would make a great supplement to a yoga class or videotape/dvd.The third section is called, "Breathing" and is 8 pages long.It has excellent pictures that illustrate the concepts described in this section.A list of references and an index greet you at the end.The reference lists 32 books.Ranging from "Disc Regeneration" by O.J. Ressel to Deepak Chopra's "Quantum Healing," to "Symbolism in Greek Mythology" by Paul Diel, to " The Revival of Qui." by Kunio Miura, to F.J. Bueche's "Understanding the World of Physics," and Elisabeth Ripely's "Leonardo da Vinci.A Biography."

5-0 out of 5 stars Stretching Time
This is the single book of a singular teacher. It has the impact of a condensed truth, worthy of being met again and again. The truth is that yoga is not a sport, there is no score, there is only an inquiry and a resounding experience of the self.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ab workout, the rest, well.....
This book has great ab routines, although it took me a bit to organize them all into a workout. Its kinda like the authors threw all the pages of the book into the air, then glued them together and put a cover on it. However once you actually find the routines, they are good. Although I would get another strength training routine, one that may not have the best abodominal excercises and combine it with this book. The rest of the stuff in the book was usless to me, and most training routines, that I've seen, dont really have a great ab/core workout. Bottom line; you get the best for your core, and you can dump the rest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas presented in poorly organized manner
The basic premise of the book is conditioning the abdominal, low back, and hip muscles such that the whole body mass is stabilized during activity. That great idea is over inflated with the word "core" that the authors overuse redundantly and apply it to the mind, body, anatomy, and eating. The simple format of writing style, short chapters, and plenty of the authors' well tested advices, render the book invaluable source of information on effective fitness practice.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource For Total Core Training
This book covers it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The book was in great condition, better than expected, it looked brand new. Fast shipping as well. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars I was surprised that this is such a good book
When I see Suzanne Somers I just see Chrissy from Three's Company and all that snorting and dumb blonde-ing!I never paid any attention to any of the Suzanne Somers books because I figured this was just another celebrity attaching their persona to something. My library happened to have this on the shelf and since I had some time to kill while waiting for my daughter to pick out her books I decided to flip through the recipe section since I knew it was a low carb type of diet and I do atkins.I was very interested at what I saw so I checked it out.I have been totally shocked at how easy and terrific her ideas are and in fact her philosophy is quite interesting too.I am really impressed.I have a totally different viewpoint now of Suzanne Somers.I love this recipe book so much I had to buy it so I"d have a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great recipes!!
My husband & I just started the South Beach diet.Since Somersizing is a very similar concept (similar to Atkins too), I thought I'd check out these recipes. The book explains the concept of cutting out sugar & sugar forming carbohydrates (anything containing white flour). I looked into the other somersizing books & this one really has the best recipes. So far I've only tried a few & they were very delicious. The cream cheese pancakes & balsamic dijon chicken are yummy.I also bought Somersweet, some of the recipes call for it, but you can use Splenda or other sweeteners instead. All of the recipes in this book are appealing as well as healthy. And they are fast & easy to make. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best for healing
I've purchased many copies of this book for friends who are involved with healing. It provides the yoga poses and complete yoga sequences for each needed type of healing. Presentation is clear and complete. And, even better, there is an excellent index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for healing different problems
This book kept me from having surgery.I tore 2 knee ligaments skiing.I'm not into surgery, so I did the knee yoga practice from this book for a few weeks; then had an MRI.The ligaments were completely torn but my knee was functional and didn't hurt. The orthopedic doctor was so impressed...he said he had never seen a torn knee that was so functional before. He sent me to PT for a few more weeks, and I was fine.
4-0 out of 5 stars This book is perfect for Yoga students and Teachers.
I read this book as part of Teacher's Training course for Yoga.I found this book to be very informative. It gives you detailed instructions and Yoga positions that will help with different ailments and diseases. Also learning the bone structures and parts of the body was helpful, while studying Teachers Training for Yoga.I liked this book very much.I also thought Gary Kraftsow's writing was down to earth so that everyone can understand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great sequel to her first book which is also excellent!
This book is really a sequel to her first book "The Pilates Body" although it could stand alone for people who are already familiar with the basics of Pilates.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for "kicking up" Pilates
Siler's latest book on Pilates is an excellent resource for those who have been exposed to Pilates.(Although it could be used by a beginner, there are better books to ground you in the material, particularly Siler's first book and those of Alycea Ungaro's.)If you want ways to bring Pilates to your gym routine, she has quite a few ideas for five popular pieces of equipment. If you want to know how to incorporate mat principles into your at home workout, there are ideas for weights and bands.Trying to improve your sports performance?Plenty of insights and specific exercises for four sports.Do you want to spice up your mat routine, but still in the Pilates-realm?Siler offers four different mat routines with exercises not usually seen in retail manuals. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a good portion of the book is devoted to bringing Pilates principles into everyday life- whether driving, waiting in line, carrying your child, standing on the subway or a host of other everyday activities almost everyone finds themselves doing- via her trademarked Invisible Workout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Unlearn All the Nutrional Misinformation Out There!
Robert Crayhon has done as excellent job in this book. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific nutrtional subject, so you can flip around in this book, as is appropriate for your needs. However, I recommend reading it in its entirety because he is right on with accurate nutritional information. This will help you get to the real truths on how to eat healthier and help you to be able to decipher reality from all the "nutritional noise" out there.Buy it for a life-long reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Crayhon's Nutrition Made Simple
My wife owned this book and I read it several years ago then again recently.I have read many diet and nutrition books over the years and I consider this one of the best.It is well written and informative as can be.I am giving several copies away to co-workers because I want them to benefit from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information, great little book on juicing
I'd never heard of Jay Kordich, but from his bio in the book he's REALLY dedicated to the concept of juicing -- a pioneer, really. His enthusiasm is welcome, he knows what he's talking about and virtually every recipe is worth making! I bought a Breville juicer from amazon.com and I wish this book had shipped with it!
4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book...
I definitely think it's a good book if you're just starting out.In the back it gives you a lot of info about the different vitamins and minerals what fruit/vegetable has it and how it helps your body.I actually ordered this book for someone else, and they were so grateful.Bottom line is it's not a waste of money.Good Luck everyone!

3-0 out of 5 stars Juiceman's Juicing
This book covers storage and selections of fruits and vegetables quite well, also has easy receips.Howeveer it is a bit redundant and could be reduced and still cover all of the information. ... Read more
