Editorial Review

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not for me.
If you are completely desperate and need something really basic to follow, this is a good book.I'm overweight but these exercises were just too easy and I didn't feel challenged enough.I opted to start weight watchers and use some exercise videos instead.I did enjoy the book and it is very motivational if you want to start fresh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nope not this one .....
I was disappointed with this book. He has his picture on every other page, literally. The numbering of chapters is confusing. I truely have gotten much more out of "Strong Women Stay Slim" by Miriam Nelson, which I got from the library, and now have purchased. I would suggest taking a look at Jorge's somewhere before making your purchase~ (do as I say, not as I do LOL) "Strong Women" just seemed so much simpler, and the drawings of the exercises are pleasant and clear. Often times I don't want to do the exercises, then I think "well, I'll just do the first one" and before I know it I've done them all and am feeling better. In fact, I have now ordered Nelson's book on arthritis. Note: There are only 6 basic exercises plus stretching in Nelson's work, so it certainly doesn't take much longer than Jorge's "8 Minutes."

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I bought this book with high hopes having read the reviews here on Amazon but was sorely dissapointed with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports medicine
Runners, weight lifters, bikers, golfers, and other exercise buffs (I'm a runner) need serious guidance about injury prevention and how to improve your performance. I found this to be a great guide, not from an amateur enthusiast, but from a doctor who has seriously taken on the problem, even beyond the typical exercises I was familiar with from physical therapy over the years. And yes, they told me I'd likely have to do exercises for the rest of my life. And that's what makes this book so handy, you don't have a therpist with you day in and out.
2-0 out of 5 stars Backsmart book
I have had recurring back issues for quite some time (12 years) and have done lenghty research to help aleviate pain and improve performance. With that being said, I found this book to be entirely too basic for me.Much of what's covered are sretches and abdominal and bicep exercises.....very little lower/upper back exercises. If you're an athlete or somebody who's been active consistently, you probably won't find your answers in this book. However, for older or non-exercising individuals, this book has decent basic guidlines and is decent starter information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any training library
No matter what type of exercise program you are doing or starting, this book will help you do it better. The pictures really help to get your mind focused on what's happening during specific exercises and everyone seems to agree that is a good thing. Great layout. When you are ready to vary your routine this book can help you by identifying substitute exercises for those you are unable to perform the exercises yet due to back or neck weakness/ pain or simply don't yet have the strength to perform them yet.

Editorial Review

Fitness trainer Jorge Cruise has helped 3 million cyberspace clients lose weight, and now he's headed for your bookshelf with the same goal in mind. In just eight minutes a day, says Cruise, you can drop two pounds of fat per week, change your shape, and gain muscle and energy. His secret formula: an inspirational "wake-up talk," followed by strength training two muscle groups per day, eating according to his "eating card" program, and keeping a journal. For exercise, Cruise presents a varied, 28-day program of illustrated exercises using dumbbells. Why the emphasis on strength training? While aerobics burns calories while you're exercising, adding muscle revs up fat burning at rest by increasing your metabolic rate. Every pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 calories per day. You'll look better and feel younger and more energetic, resulting in more activity, burning more calories, he says. Cruise's eating plan emphasizes "good" (omega) fats, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein (low in saturated fat), and vegetables, with dairy, fruits, and "treats and cravings" in moderation. His "Eating Card System" gives you an allotment of portions from each of the food groups. If you're the kind who likes the regimentation of following a specific program every day, Cruise will get you moving, eating better, and losing weight. Read more

My husband and I just Love this book, and all the excellent information,we ordered it and recieved it in no time,I would recomend this book to anyone. Trish Boone

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK AND CONCEPT!
8 Minutes in the morning is a staple book in my house. I can talk myself into doing 8 minutes when I can barely talk my sorry backside off the couch! And it really helps. My waist trims down, my arms gain strength, and best of all, I don't feel guilty! Sure, I fall off of my good intentions bandwagon, but time and again, I pull the book back off the shelf...This book is particularly helpful for new mothers, when you're traveling, the homebound, the writer (me) who wrinkles my nose at most exercise routines, and those who find themselves short on time. If don't get that run in later in the day, you've still stretched, lifted weights and did your body some good.
2-0 out of 5 stars More than 8 minutes . . .
Just a warning - 8 minutes doesn't count warm up, stretching, or the time it takes you to get up from the floor and situated to the next exercise (something that I find really annoying and ineffecient!).

2-0 out of 5 stars Ouch
Guys, I respect Pavel, and he has a tremendous reputation in the power-training world.I was really excited to begin the routine in P2P, but it only took me three weeks to WRECK my lower back from the deadlifts and my right shoulder from the side presses.I'm a strong, healthy, 26-year old guy with about a year of freeweight experience.I paid very close attention to Pavel's directions, and still got injured. There are safer routines out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent start
I liked this book and have been following the cycles in my strength training for quite some time. The principle of irradiation is interesting and I've since eliminated the idea of isolation and replaced it with emphasis. I like how this book teaches a practitioner to become strong without adding any mass. I would only give the book 4 stars because it is a start and not a one stop source for developing strength. For the price of the book, it should be. I have made significant gains on this program but have reached plateaus and I also find that when I abandon this training, my progress is quickly lost. I think the author purposely holds back information in his books so that he can later publish new books containing the missing information and make more money. This is no way to do business. All this aside, this is a great start to strength training but the book does have its limitations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strength, Strength, and little but Strength
Some people will try to sell this as Pavel's Book of Muscle.I disagree. This is a book on strength training, period. If you're looking for an overall fitness book, look elsewhere. If you want to know how to get strong, using just a barbell, this is your ticket.

Editorial Review

Whether you're recovering from back surgery or looking for a decent full-body workout, Pilates has something to offer--and this practical kit from well-known guru Brooke Siler pulls a complicated system together with finesse. Emphasizing equal stretching and strengthening of the muscles (especially those throughout the torso, referred to as "the powerhouse"), Pilates mat work is conveniently portable thanks to its total lack of fancy equipment. Combining a video with Pilates is asking for poor muscular alignment and a lot of mental distraction, so while the kit's components may seem a little old-fashioned, they're both effective and appropriate. Two CDs and 70 illustrated flash cards work together to supply visual and oral cues for each exercise; a simple book and exercise journal complete the package. With a portable player, you'll have private instruction in public gyms or hotels without expensive classes or tight schedules. The first disk provides a solid grounding in the fundamentals and progresses up the ladder. Many postures are possible for everyone, regardless of fitness level, and it's also a good backup for advanced students if an accident or illness forces you to start again from scratch. The second disk takes you through the intermediate exercises, some of which may be difficult (or impossible) at first but remain inspiring--Siler's gentle authority and creative metaphors make it easy to visualize a day when we'll all be as lean, strong and flexible as she is.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for a daily routine
I love this CD. It is like actually doing a mat class in my house. The pacing is great. The exercises and their order are exactly what I get in my classical Pilates mat classes. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that I want a few MORE mat classes. At this point I do the same 22 minute workout every day. I think it would be fairly easy to put a couple more on the CD with varying exercises. I am an intermediate Pilates student, and I feel that I need more workout than this CD offers. I'd like to try some more exercises at home, but I prefer to have a guide. However, having this straightforward class to do at home has been great! I am now doing Pilates every day!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful set!
I love pilates and have used variety of pilates equipment, dvds, books, , but was confused how to feel and move from powerhouse, also how to breath position my body correctly. I knew something was lacking from my form and the various dvds and books did not help, either they were confusing, or the workouts were tedious, joyless. After using this set, I realized that you cannot "see" the fine details of pilates, by looking at someone else doing the movement,You have to find them through tuning into your own body.Pilates is subtle, complex. and wonderful to do when you grasp the basics. This set shows me what it must be like to train with top trainer. Wow! what a gift.It is like having one of the best trainers in your room, giving you private instruction! Now I understand and feel my powerhouse and know how to breath and how to use my breath and powerhouse to do the exercises.and have much clearer understanding of correct positions, movements of exercises than I ever did from the other sources.Plus she makes it fun. What a difference! If you've never seen the pilates exercises, then it might be helpful to borrow video or dvd from library and to see the basic movements. then take it back, and use this set to learn the details, to learn how to do them correctly, with joy, from one of the best trainers out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Objectively the best
i'm not a big reviewer but think its time to put in some effort. I have her Book and i also have the Essential Mat DVD, Alycea's Portable Pilates and also On the Ball with Lizbeth garcia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I've been working out for close to 30 years. I am learning a lot from this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money!
I've been working out for years, but my weight training workouts were something I worked out by trial and error and centered on machines available in my gym. I started with Volume 1 of this series and found it an excellent guide to using many free weights, as well as some machines. I like the variety of routines and the explanations -- just enough detail without excess text.I worked through Vol. 1 twice, then purchased Vol. 2. The lack of spiral binding in Vol. 2 was a major handicap, so I took it to Staples and spent a few $ for spiral binding, which makes it much easier to use. There are enough new exercises to make the voume a worthy sequel to Vol. 1 -- a lot of the illustrations are recyled from Vol. 1, but it's very handy to be able to quickly review an exercise when you need reminding. For the money, this is an excellent guide to working with a combination of free weights and machines, but I'd start with Vol. 1 first.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
If you can only buy one book today, this should be the one. If you came here planning to buy several books, this should still be at the very top of your list. And while you're at it, consider getting a copy for someone you dearly care about as well. The Food Revolution is the one book that will tell you the truth about the food you eat, and how your food choices impact your own health, as well as world hunger, the environment, and the welfare of the other creatures that share this planet with us. In his inimitable, gentle way, John Robbins presents the facts about the impact our animal-centered Western diet has on our bodies and our world...never judging, never saying 'you must do this or that,' but simply presenting the facts YOU need to make informed choices. The beauty of this book lies in its readability. Robbins is an outstanding writer, and he blends anecdotes with hard data in a way that makes The Food Revolution highly accessible. In fact, it's difficult to put it down. That said, it's also a supremely well-documented work, as was its predecessor, the bestselling Diet For a New America. Robbins doesn't expect you to take his word for what he says...the primary sources are clearly indicated. This is a book for the scientist and the truck driver...for the secretary and the dietician. It should be required reading for all medical doctors, nutritionists, and politicians. It should be top on the list for anyone concerned with human health, world hunger, animal welfare or the environment. Whatever you know, or think you know, about the food you eat...where it comes from, how it's produced, what it does for your body (good or bad)...I strongly encourage you to read The Food Revolution. You may or may not agree with Robbins' conclusions, but I guarantee you will never regard the food on your plate the same way again. You will be challenged...you will be amazed, appalled and quite possibly inspired...but most important, you will be educated as to just how much power you hold, over your own health and over the health of the planet and its peoples, in the hand that wields your fork.
5-0 out of 5 stars Food for thought
Reading this book will make you think more than twice about what you eat. It is a must read for anyone concerned with their health, our planet, and overall wellbeing. Thankfully I already followed a pretty clean diet void of animal products. This book is full of a lot of facts (the footnotes are extensive- lots of research to back up the points) and draw a bleak portrait of the food industry in the US.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book
I've been experimenting with orthomolecular nutrition for several years, and found Dr. Haas' book to be an invaluable resource. He gives ample information about each vitamin, mineral, etc. including deficiency and toxicity symptoms. It has been a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
This book gives tons of information about different diets, all the vitamin, nutrients, water, air, etc.... I learned so much! I read the whole thing in a little over a week, I spent at least 2-3 hours a day reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Valuable Book
I keep picking this book up and referring to it for information I need about health, diet, supplements, etc. It's big alright, but eventually I've been to all the sections. It's a sensible, reasonable book with no hype. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource on the topic
Other books on tantra left us a little disappointed. Not so with this one.Beautifully presented in a way that's easily understood and appreciated, this book provides tools and insights that we really hoped to get. The authors have created such a valuable resource here -- bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex with soul and sizzle!
We stumbled across "Soul Sex: Tantra for Two" when scanning through various sex manuals trying to learn more about sacred sex and tantra. Most books on tantra appeared to be cheap raunchy treatises on kama sutra sexual positions, or alternatively overbearing theses on mantras, meditation and complex Eastern Philosophy. But there in the stacks along with the sleaze and the sermons was a delightful alternative that beautifully wove together the concepts of sexuality, love, soulful living and spirituality. Although tantric sex is a hot theme throughout the manuscript, its focus is more on relationships, personality development and unconditional love. The key lessons this book stresses are about learning to trust, surrender and open one's heart to one's partner, and that these are the ways to spiritual lovemaking and transcendence. According to the authors, there is no goal in tantric lovemaking, rather only purpose, and that purpose is union, and through union each can achieve transcendence. Another key point is to realize that fantastic sex does not come from a great sex partner, but your own ability to let yourself go, and to focus your attention on the moment. True passion comes from a keen capacity to both give and receive love fully. There are also various creative practical exercises, within the book, aimed at reducing sexual inhibitions and negative sex attitudes, enhancing expressions of affection, solving relationship difficulties, reflecting on one's life goals, improving communication during lovemaking, ejaculation mastery for men and orgasm enrichment for women, promoting sexual playfulness, generating heightened sexual energy both individually and jointly, and learning to move that energy throughout one's body using relaxation, breathing, concentration, mantras and rituals. Perhaps one of the most genuine and refreshing aspects of this book is the gentle and seductive way that the authors, Pala Copeland and Al Link, have provided insights about tantric lovemaking by revealing various critical steps or missteps in their own ongoing tantric journey. The authors set by example the means to achieve sexual openness by opening their hearts to all who truly read this book. By so intimately sharing their knowledge and experience, Pala and Al show that they not only have achieved transcendence in their own sacred sexual practice, but allow this wisdom to transcend to their readers/students. We would recommend this book to any couple who want to grow together in their relationship and add more intimacy and passion to their sex life. The information in this book is priceless!

2-0 out of 5 stars Repeat of information from other books
If you think you are buying a book with over 300 pages of recipes, save your money.Over 2/3 of the book is repeat advice about how to eat the "real age way".Along with this repeated information from Dr. Roizen's previous Real Age books is "silly" advice ranging from what kitchen utensils will increase your kitchen IQ along with how and when to buy produce.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly enough recipes
I love Dr. Roizen, and Dr. Oz, who both have appeared on Oprah many times.Their not about fad diets, etc., but just eating right.I was dissapointed with this book, though.I thought I was getting a cookbook, and instead it was 3/4 reading and 1/4 recipes.I thought it was hard to follow. "You" The owners Manual is a much better book to read, which was written by both Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beggining marathoners!
This book makes it easy for a runner who wants to jump to the marathon level. It gives you a step by step training guide along with nutrtional tips as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars too short.
I am training for my first marathon and thought this book would be a good resource. It's got some good motivational stuff, but the book is just about basics; I didn't feel it had any "meat" so to speak. You can read it cover to cover in an hour or so, and I didn't come away with anymore information than I could find on marathon websites. Save your ten bucks and do the research on the net, buy a different book, or even better - join a marathon training group headed by a veteran marathoner.BTW, I did pick up Nancy Clark's marathon nutrition book - that is a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy training guide!
I went from a 4:40 marathon to a 4:24 marathon (2nd marathon). Not bad!I'm using this training plan again and going for 4:15.I like this book because it cuts to the chase, it's easy to read and just gives the basics. There are training plans for longer times than 4 hours as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is the most comprehensive book I have read.It truly helps the newbies that are interested in pilates.I have a better understanding of my body and it has helped me truly understand pilates and how it affects my body, not just my core.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in pilates.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read!!!
Pelvic Power is an awesome book to read and apply to your life. My once awful sciatica is now non-existent thanks to proper care and the aid of this book. I found areas in my pelvic floor region that needed attention that normally dancers don't even think about during our careers!! THe flexibility and control is remarkable and the results are immediate. I look forward to enjoying a very ahppy married life in the future, LOL!!

5-0 out of 5 stars best exercise book purchase ever
This book has helped me more than a very expensive pelvic floor workshop I attended which just taught me how to become tense. These are the best fourteen bucks I have spent in exercise literature. The book has to be slowly digested and paced to fully grasp the content. The explanations are simple and the visuals are wonderful, but the simplicity is deceptive: the subtle movements require complete calm and focus. I have a lot of problems around the pelvic/hip/lumbar region and these exercises are a treasure to me. I feel I have only started taping into the benefits they can bring if done correctly. I keep coming back to the book and the exercises again and again. Totally recommended! ... Read more
