2-0 out of 5 stars Low Calorie, Complex Carb, Low Glycemic Diet Book
Denise Austin's book, if you follow her plan, will help you lose weight. It comes from keeping calories very low (fewer than 1500 a day), eating complex carbs and protein, and exercising. There is nothing here that a person cannot get off the internet for free or in a fitness magazine from the grocery store.Austin has "daily dozen" exercises, which are a cross between yoga moves and calisthenics, and she says 30 minutes of walking a day is also necessary. Duh. She also points out the the Daily Dozen are really for people who are sedentary and not those who already are pretty fit. Another thing that bugged me was that she "tried" the low-carb diet for ONE day and it made her tried and cranky so she KNEW that it was bogus. Well, I'm not saying Atkins is the way to go, but when I went off sweets for a month I wanted to die either by my own hand or someone else's -- I was so miserable with headaches and mood swings that I thought I was hitting early menopause, yet no one would tell me that I should keep eating Hostess Ding Dongs if they make me feel better.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info, not enough good recipes
Denise is great with providing a ton of useful information in this book. The recipes weren't as appealing as I thought they would be. I read the book for the first couple days that I had it, but haven't opened it since. The recipes really did nothing for me to actually attempt to make them.

1-0 out of 5 stars If anyone eats 1300 calories...
you are going to lose weight.I don't care what you eat.I was initially attracted to this book because I agree that eating "no carbs" is a gimmick and nutritionally unsound. But to claim that diabetics can eat small portions of white flour and sugar is like telling an alcoholic they can just have one glass of wine.Irresponsible! ... Fitness is a lifetime commitment, but you can accelerate results and transform your body in 12 weeks, says Bob Greene, best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer. Not for the "move a little" crowd, this program is intense and challenging, whatever your starting level. "It's a bit like boot camp," Greene acknowledges. You'll do vigorous aerobic exercise 15 (beginning level), 30 (intermediates), or 45 (advanced) minutes 6 days a week, and increase 2 minutes each week--and Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No overnight results

4-0 out of 5 stars 12 Punishing weeks of kick-butt work!
This book is very similar to another book the author wrote about fitness and dieting. The format is the basically the same with the first 60 pages covering emotional eating and the psychological aspects of dealing with food. The last 30 pages is a survey of current diets such as Atkins, Weight Watchers and others. The middle of the book includes a lot on specific weight-lifting exercises and aerobics. A concept I really like is the 5 Simple Eating Rules, which can be harder than you think. I also appreciated the very descriptive tables outlining the whole 12 week program of exercises. I gave 4 stars because I could have done without the emotional eating and diet survey sections. All that said, it's well written and motivating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and useful!
It is the one of the best. It is more used for general fitness than serious weight lifter. Usually, it takes a few months to notice result in weight training, as such, it is important to keep a training log. For convenient and substainable motivation, I have used my mobile phone as a log from [...] in the gym.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.
What do you do when you've just been hired by a client who hasn't exercised in 26 years, or someone who has just been cleared by their docotor to workout? Well, the knowledge that I have is helpful, but sometimes you need to have the basic knowledge laid infront of you....and you kind of pick up whats really important.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been much better
I have started going to gym recently. Some questions always bothered me- should I go for fat burning/ cardio? What does target heart rate mean? Should I start lifting the weights or concentrate on running/walking? What should I do to avoid soar muscles the next day? I see different equipments here, which one corresponds to which muscle building? Why strecthing/cool down procedure is important? and list goes on. This book has answered most of the my questions in a simple informative way than any other book I found at borders book store. But the book is certainly not a complete one. For example, the streching exercises given mainly concentrate on upper body. IMHO, the streching exercises are not very elegant for a people in thier mid 20s. I felt that the book could have avoided certain supplementary details. For instance, I dont see why author should talk SO much about the forms ecto, endo & meso. Overall, the shallowness of issues is fine from a beginners point of view but the breadth of the topics to be covered could have been greater. ... Read more

After trying every diet program imaginable--from Atkins to Optifast--media giant and self-confessed junk-food junkie Oprah Winfrey met personal trainer and exercise physiologist Bob Greene. The rest is talk-show history. (Who can forget seeing Oprah wheeling that wagon of fat onstage?) Instead of fad diets, fasts, and quick fixes, Greene taught Oprah how to eat right and exercise regularly. He helped her lose more than 70 pounds and changed her life forever.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dynamic and varied.
I just bought the book, and I was really surprised by the many different ways one could utilize the ball and band.I have clients who only have an hour to get into the gym, change, workout and change back into their work clothes.I find these workouts convenient, because we get to focus on the training instead of looking for different weights and equipment-especially around lunchtime!

Editorial Review

Fitness guru Denise Austin helps you "zero in on your personal trouble spots" while increasing metabolism with this 6-week exercise and eating program. Her formula includes toning workouts that target the waist, thighs, abs, buttocks, hip, lower back, and upper arms; regular walking and stretching; and eating strategies (not dieting). Her tips are refreshingly sensible: Avoid chronic dieting (it hurts your health and makes you fatter), stretch to decrease stress, fill up on high-fiber foods, eat a balanced diet, build muscle to increase calorie-burning, and walk almost every day. Austin's clearly illustrated and varied exercises use body weight, dumbbells, resistance bands, or a stability ball. A sample exercise schedule takes 15 to 60 minutes a day. For especially busy days, she offers a series of exercises that work two or more muscle groups at once.Austin's "Shrink-Fat Eating Plan" emphasizes portion control, 1,400 to 1,800 calories, and a nutritional breakdown of 24 percent "good" fat, 20 percent protein, and 56 percent high-quality carbs. Whether you just want a foundation to get started or you need a structured, daily program (including menu plans, shopping lists, and daily logs), you can find it here. Profiles of happy and successful followers of the program add interest. Highly recommended. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book That Explained My Situation
After a month of working out HARD and eating right, I had lost a total of two pounds and was beyond despondent. In desperation I re-read all those diet/exercise books I had purchased over the years, including this one.Greene explained that my situation was not only not that unusual, it was actually a good thing! He also explained that for some people (me) there is cycle of gaining a few pounds back before each cycle of losing. That knowledge alone has kept me from running to the ice cream when the scale goes up after I've done everything right.
2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Diet Stuff
If you have never read a diet book before than this one is as good as any.The author addresses all aspects of dieting and exercise. My disappointment was that you have heard it all before.I have had success on Weight Watchers, Body For Life and the South Beach Diet.My problem is that after the initial excitement wears off, I don't maintain the program.I was interested in this book because the other reviews indicated that it addressed emotional aspects of over-eating.Specifically, boredom, stress, etc.But I was really disappointed when he discussed these issues because he wrote a little blurb on each aspect and then gave some personal story. To me it was childish psychological advice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unscientific and improvised analysis
Like many fitness gurus who resort to training as an escape from learning science, math, and the other related disciplines, yet believe that they could master the complexity of these integrated fields, without even touching a text book, Bob Greene embodies such nave and simplistic approach. In this book, he improvises many flawed information, believing that the folks training for fitness are the last people to discover his lazy and flawed interpretation of the physiology of fitness.

Fitness celebrity and former gymnast Denise Austin always took care of her body. "In my 20s, however, I was more concerned with looking good in a bikini," she admits. "These days I'm focused on feeling good and staying healthy--and if I can still get away with wearing a bikini, that's a bonus!" Writing at age 43, she reminds us that 40 certainly isn't the end of the road--in fact, we probably have another 40 years or more to look forward to.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're 40 or plus and wondering where your body went...
this book is for you.I will admit, I am not a big fan of Denise Austin in general, but this book has given me comfort in knowing that I'm not screwing up, my body is just changing. And this books is helping me change right along with it, making the adjustments I need to, to be fit and fabulous.Just two years ago people were commenting on my slimness, that was my 40th birthday, now at 42, nothing is where I left it!But I'm confident this book will help me get the pieces back where they belong and that I'm going to feel wonderful again, both emotionally and physically. And she's real, there's no gimmicks just good education about getting older, common sense and things that anyone can do. THANK YOU DENISE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 BBS Manual: "Training to Failure" - D.I.Y Hercules for Everybody
*Note* There is a revised edition of this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Classic but dated
I bought and read this book about ten years ago. I used it to start a weightlifting program. There is alot of good information in this book. However, the book is somewhat dated. As I learned from other serious, competitive body builders, there is too much training advised in this volume. Even people who juice don't train this much - and you don't have to to achieve great results. For example, Dorian Yates trains alot less than what Arnold advises in this book and he was Mr. Olympia for a number of years. Consequently, you better off purchasing a more recently published book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a Beginner and a Advanced body builder
I love this book.I have read many body building and fitness books but this one covers every thing.Evrything you need to know about any body part is in here.Arnold didn't hold back.It is very creative and makes you want to create a a training schedule for yourself. My brother and I actually fought over this book and it fell apart on us so I had to order a new one.I highly recommend this book to any person who wants to do weight lifting. ... Editorial Review

"Eat sensibly and exercise," is Bob Greene's message, and in a friendly and personal style, he shows you how. Greene, an exercise physiologist and Oprah Winfrey's trainer, focuses on diet with a wealth of sound information and helpful strategies. Greene starts with a cutting overview of destructive diets, including those popular today. Then, after reviewing exercise essentials, he presents a refreshingly sensible plan for nutritious, healthy eating, with tools for keeping intake moderate. One key is eating breakfast, which boosts metabolism and helps you eat less all day. Another is distributing your calories over the course of the day rather than eating a lot at any one meal. 4-0 out of 5 stars Get with the program
Get with the program, indeed! I've studied many, many health guides--and I do judge them accorrdingly. Bob's book provides a lot of good and useful information. Bob Greene gives good advice not only on what to eat, but also how and when to eat. He also suggests balance, moderation, and variety--as well as drinking a lot of water, not eating before going to bed, or while watching TV (a typical couch potato habit).

5-0 out of 5 stars great for the hard to motivate
I have always been the type who has a hard time sticking to an exercise routine. After the birth of my third child, the pounds didn't melt away as easily as with the others and I got Kathy's postpartum DVD with Cindy Crawford.I got addicted and loved Kathy's down to earth approach-she gives reminders about form but is not overly exuberant like some trainers. After several weeks I loved the results so much that I checked out this book from the library. There are parts that are still extremely challenging for me,even after about 6 weeks, but I am doing her daily routine faithfully. I ended up purchasing the book from Amazon after enjoying my library copy so much. She really stresses fitness as a lifestyle and gives some great advice and recipes in the book. Plus I can't help but love the celebrity tidbits.

2-0 out of 5 stars Anticipating mental fatigue...
I returned the book. Cumbersome. Not what I expected after a promo on TV had gotten me interested. Signed up and doing Jazzercise instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice That Works Well Today!
I got this book almost 15 years ago and it really worked for me.I used it to start my own workout regime and I got results within weeks.I still do many of the stretching exercises that I'd learned from this book today at the gym although I don't have as much time as before to do all the weight training exercises.I find both the stretching and the abdominal exercises here to be first class - easy to do and extremely effective - and should time permit and I get more time say at least 3 hours to spare at the gym, I'll try to restart in full the routines outlined in this book. This is highly recommended for anyone who has always wanted to get fit through weight training but didn't know how to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars it works
I have been working out for over 10 years and never did any sort of workout like this, but it works. I had a surgey and found myself in the weakest shape of my life, so i bought the book read it thaught it was stupid, but gave it a try anyway and now have been doing it for 3 months and can do the circuit with no problem 3 times in 45-50 mininutes with heavey weights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Effective routines despite many erroneous explanations
A great bodybuilder yet a lousy and lazy author and communicator, Arnold could have shrunk this book into one forth of its length and hired a well-educated editor to present more compelling and accurate information. In this book, Arnold sounds more submissive to the cynicism of wealthy, lazy, and late starters from Santa Monica. He is pictured with his trainees in-person in the simplest and most ridiculous exercises that a mature adult could contemplate doing. Thus, the entire book is geared for those late starters that are hard to motivate who need the simplest routines, in a nutshell.

Editorial Review

Fitness expert Kathy Smith has written a sensitive and smart book about what she calls the "half-time bell," also known as menopause. Using as examples her own hot flashes, raw nerves, restless nights, and memory misfires, Smith outlines an upbeat, trifaceted program for "taking charge of menopause." She addresses the three themes of midlife transition: hormonal symptoms such as mood swings and night sweats; the need to reflect and create a deeper meaning; and long-term health issues, specifically heart disease and bone loss. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Focus on Health!
Kathy Smith is the "every woman's" health/fitness coach. It is very refreshing to work out with someone who's focus is FIRST health instead of body image.Always encouraging and friendly, not intimidating, her beauty comes from her personal training work, not as a star or beauty-image queen. Great and simple workout that can be used for ladies at all levels of fitness and especially those experiencing the challenges of midlife. Great information as well as extras including yoga and pilates. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Reassuring Voice
Kathy Smith has always conveyed that a healthy lifestyle includes very few quick fixes. It takes small steps that accumulate to form a healthier body and psyche. Her chapters on exercise are, as always, filled with great pictures and instructions.None of them require that you bend yourself into a pretzel or replicate moves you made in gym class thirty years ago. And her nutrition information is obviously carefully researched.Plus she takes into account "cheating."A kind and gentle approach to menopause from a kind and gentle lady.

4-0 out of 5 stars A HELPFUL BOOK FOR A TRYING TIME
The authors' have done an excellent job of pointing out the importance of maintaining physical, emotional and spiritual health through this trying time in a woman's life.I particularly liked the suggestions of using herbs as an alternate to hormone therapy.Hormone therapy is an individual affair that should be discussed with one's one physician and there are extreme pros and cons of hormone therapy - it is not for every woman.Herbs, if selecting the right ones in the right amounts can be an alternative but I would suggest readers consult a qualified herbologist first, rather than experimenting themselves. Some herbs, like any medication, do not mix well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
I started using this book in June 2004.I am 41 years of age and wanted to tone by body.I have followed her workouts in this book primarily using the 10 minute routines for upper body, abs, lower body, back, ball and resistance bands. My goal primarily was to one my body.I have dropped a full clothing size and lost 10lbs.I tell everyone I can about this book and the philosophy of exercise.I consider myself a very busy person, I am a mother, I work full time, but every weekday morning I find 10 minutes to do my exercises and it has clearly paid off for me.These results come from exercise.I don't believe in fad diets and have continued to eat food in moderation and control portion size, but I eat what I want.If toning up is important to you, invest the money and the time you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilates for Every Body by Denise Austin
This book is a useful supplement to your existing health and2-0 out of 5 stars Pilates for Advanced Everybodies
I tried this Pilates tape that is supposedly for everybody. Denise is as full of sunshine as she alwasy ever. It gets irritating fast when you realize that you can't begin to do half the stuff she is talking about. I have done Pilates before so I know that Denise is doing advanced positions that could cause beginners to injure themselves. She doesn't even give alternate or adjustment poses too often.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is your choice
This book is really a useful book.It contains all the information about the fast food and family resturant. He mentions about the nutrition value in his book. There is a list of menus. It's such an useful guide for each and every family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book is really good when you find yourself trying to decide what the least of all evils is while away from home. It is written as "advise." Example: "If you are at "Such & Such" restaurant, the best thing on the menu would be A, B, or C; Do Not even think about D, E, or F." While being full of great info, as I read my little voice was whispering "Common Sense." "Never order anything with Alfredo in the description." Well, we know that! But, it is also definitely an eye opener in some respects.
4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD ADVICE IF YOU EAT FAST FOOD
I guess one could argue with a fair amount of validity that eating healthy and fast food our a rather distinct contrast in terms. The best advice if one wants to eat healthy at a fast food place is...don't!But let's face it...most of us simply are not going to heed that advice because our lives are so on the go that fast food is often not only the best option but the only option, particularly for lunch.

Editorial Review

After some 20 years as a highly respected aerobic fitness instructor and health promoter--one who rarely uses the phrase "lose weight"--Kathy Smith is shifting her priorities. "I would never want to choose, but if I could only do one form of training from now on, I'd give up cardio and focus on weight training." A strong statement, indeed! The title of this, her fourth book, suggests Smith's goal is to help exercisers lose weight. But as readers work through the engrossing chapters on physiology, exercise basics, and making the shift from aerobics to weight lifting, Smith says they'll note that weight loss is simply a pleasant by-product of the true benefits generated by this straightforward, nonthreatening weight-lifting program.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I found this book to be very helpful! I loved it. I have been exercising for many years using at home videos. I actually like this book more then some of the Kathy Smith Videos I have used! I wanted to get more involved with working out with weights now that I am in my 40's. The book covers the benefits of working out with weights, nutrition and covers lots of different exercises for each muscle group.(proper form is covered and explained in detail) for the entire body along with a suggested schedule or routine for each week. I have been very happy with the routines and do them entirely at home and have seen great results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Start
I had weight trained several years ago with good results but a bad fall down a flight of stairs led me in a different direction and I after gaining weight and loosing muscle I need to start again. This was an excellent fresh start for me.I saw results in just a few weeks and feel stronger and healthier and have now moved on to more serious weight training once again.5-0 out of 5 stars Strength training is no longer a mystery
Prior to reading this book, I only used weights if they were part of an aerobics class. Now I have the confidence to walk into a weight room at a gym!Kathy teaches readers how to use weights both at home and in the gym setting. The how-to photos are very helpful.I also enjoyed the chapter on diet and was impressed by the fact that Kathy consulted with a Registered Dietitian for guidance on the nutrition chapter.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to incorporate strength training into their fitness routine. ...
