If you swim, you should get this book.
I've been a regualr swimmer for about 30 years - 4 to 5 times a week, an hour or so each time.About 2 years ago, a friend gave me a book about the Alexander Technique to read, saying it might be of interest to me and my swimming.I was quite interested and managed to attend a workshop where I got some hands-on experience with the work.One evening, a group of us went to the pool with one of the teachers and she showed us how to apply some of the ideas to swimming.Read more

A Vindication of Anarcho-Capitalsm
Back in the mid to late 90's I had the pleasure of reading a new version of a book written by David Friedman called "The Machinery of Freedom" which was originally published in the 1970's. Friedman's book introduced me to anarcho-capitalist ideas and now, years later, thanks to David T. Beito and the Independent Institute "The Voluntary City" is published that confirms many of the thoughts and ideas Friedman wrote about in his treatsie. This book is a collection of policy pieces done by different authors that detail specific, real-life examples of free market alternatives to things like court systems and litigation, education, police, housing and welfare. Most of whom were provided by insurance plans people paid for on their own via insurance companies or by private, charitable organizations people belonged to while governments, by and large, stayed out of the way. One aspect of the book that was not pointed out was private fire departments. Prior to being run by governments, many fire departments were also privately run in which their funding came from insurance plans they particpated in that provided fire protection for their customers. It wasn't until after the civil war that municipalities started acquiring and operating them. Even today, governments are beginning to privatize or not provide many essentials since they are too costly to run. For example, in Arizona, Rural Metro Corporation has contracts to provide fire and ambulatory service for cities (like mine) and even counties that do not or cannot afford to provide it. Despite this one subject left out, I felt this book was very well done and I heartily recommend it to people who have doubts about anarcho-capitalist ideas or people who are looking for new, radical ideas to replace the monopolies governments have on services they presently provide.

The best I've found
Practical and Understandable.Don Alexander has some kind of gift for making all of this stuff make sense.He explains what each suspension component does and how changing it will affect the car.The information is applicable to designing your own suspension from the ground up as well as modifying the car you have.He includes examples of cars he has tuned with good before-and-after comparisons.Common misconceptions are dispelled with logic and evidence, giving you exactly the information you need to make important decisions about your car.

Good Source for Beginners
I had no knowledge of how a suspension works or its parts until I read this book.Descriptions were pretty detailed and I understood them, so should you.Shocks, struts, springs, anti-sway bars, and even drivingtechniques.Gives you a page to help you tune your own car and examples ofhow you should go about this.Gave me everything I needed except askidpad.The only downside is the fact it's a little outdated.Time tomake an updated one.

Mr. Alexander provides a complete and concise overview of vehicle handling. Technical theory is explaned in a easy to read manner. Call me.
This book made me feel lonely and confused.Though a facile psychanalytical analysis is tempting (Oedipous action) I am more confortable divulging my own discomfort with anything that lacks absolute certainty and closure.

Delightfully Written
Alexander Nemerov's prose in this book is as rich and layered as Raphaelle Peale's paintings.It's almost as if he creates a work of art to attempt to explain other works of art.His approach seems intensely personal.I had no idea that he is Howard Nemerov's son, but you can definately tell that he knows how to write.I loved the book.I don't know if I agree with what he says, especially since other still-life painters produced similar works who didn't necessarily have problems with their fathers...but it's lovely reading for any art lover, especially those who are into american still-life painting.I'd put Nemerov right up there with Robert Hughes and Sister Wendy.

A good read
A fresh look at Peale and his inner soul. Very well written, if not altogether watertight research. A wonderful Christmas gift that makes art history as readable as a novel. I keep re-reading sections, and the more I do the more I like it. At first I hated it, but this book really grows on you.At least it grew on me. It's questionable as history (I'm a decorative art specialist, not an 'paintings' art historian per se) but maybe we need this sort of approach now and again to get the big picture re: this wonderful 'body' of evidence that has been left behind by Raphaelle Peale. Never has such a book made me so angry with its fluffyness, yet so facsinated and so involved me with the prose. Hard to put down. This sort of thing is just really captivating. My initial and admittedly agressively vile reaction notwistanding, this is something historians will be talking about for some time to come. Nemerov is indeed brilliant. Incredibly enlightening but hard to comprehend at first.
This book will be of tremendous use to you only if you manage to take it as a whole.People don't like that these days, they want instructional books as a collection of easily digested factiods. Alexander's bookmatches the conception of the human self that it describes: it cannot bebroken down into different parts but must be dealt with as a whole.Youcome to understand more and more as you read, but you don't really see whathe's saying until you can consider the whole book in retrospect.So ittakes some work, but in that regard it's a brilliant analog to the ideas itcontains: you must read this book holistically, just as you must deal withyour self holistically.

Good source of in-depth information about FM Alexander
F. Matthias Alexander was certainly one of the great creative geniuses ofthis century, although he is still comparatively unknown.In part hisobscurity is due to the novelty of his ideas and in part to his verydifficult writing style.This book is a very lightly edited version of hissecond book and still makes for fairly difficult going.On the other hand,time spent digesting the material in this (and Alexander's other books) iswell worth it.And the book includes an introduction by Professor JohnDewey, a great admirer and supporter of Alexander.Read more

Positive daily guide to see oneself as a spiritual man today

A VERY mixed bag
Glenn Park is an experienced teacher of the Alexander Technique, with much to say on the subject. To this extent the book might be useful to studentsof the Technique. Excellent book
The Alexander Technique is notoriously difficult to write about, though it is, in my view, the most powerful of the mind/body techniques. Glen Park presents the Technique in a way that is understandable to those withknowledge of New Age healing. While the Technique is arguably not New Age,having been developed in the last century, it deals with energy and themovement of energy through the body to create lasting change in your mind,body, and spirit. I found this book invaluable for explaining what happenswhen you give or recieve an Alexander Lesson. If you can possibly find anduse the audiotape that goes with the book, you'll benefit greatly. I've hadmany Alexander lessons. Using Glen Park's tape kept Alexander Techniqueeffects going for me at a time when I could not find an Alexander Teacher.Both the book and tape highly recommended.
