5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for the novice and self-trained
I recently finished reading - and taking copious notes - from The Elements of Graphic Design. As an individual taking himself through the process of learning graphic design without having to go to school, this book is invaluable. White makes the concepts crystal clear and simple prose imbued with his own take on doing design correctly plus doing it well. I've always had a good eye for composition but White's work has helped me see the underlying methods for making my designs better. I'm now building a presentation from his work to share with our marketing team to build a consistent look for our work. His book is a superb work for anyone needing to get a quick grip on design fundamentals, too. Just put them to use! There's no magic here, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do design. White will show you the way.

Useful in many of my process definition tasks. Essential text for any System Engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent SE text and reference
I have just completed the JHU program in Systems Engineering. This book is the foundation for the curriculum and is a very readable, solid overview of Systems Engineering. All phases of the system life-cycle are introduced and tied together to truly illustrate the process. The book focuses on processes, the tools used will change, but good Systems Engineering will stay the same. The process to derive good requirements that are able to be implemented and tested are the same regardless of technology or field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Prevent Backaches!
Gelb writes very clearly, with good illustrations describing F. M. Alexander's technique for good body use. Many actors, singers, and dancers use this technique, and many people who suffer from joint andmuscle disabilities can benefit from this book. Gelb's personal experiences help the reader to understand how to benefit from the techniques and exercises he describes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The clearest book on AT out there
If you are studying the Alexander Technique - whether just beginning or a more advanced student - this book is a Must!Easy to read and digest, it should be on every teacher's list. However, it is important to note that the Alexander Technique can not be learned by reading books alone.Reading this book is not a way to learn the technique. But it is a terrific supplement to private individual lessons with a good teacher!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Informative, Inspiring
I started practicing the Alexander Technique over the last couple months. My teacher "assigned" me this book to read, as part of our work together. It's an outstanding book. It's very clear and easy to read.Gelb offers many anecdotal stories and quotes and other stuff like that to make it more enjoyable and inspiring. He tells the fascinating story of how Dr. Alexander developed the technique. Then he proceeds to give a clear and practical explanation of all the different aspects of the technique.I learned a lot! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Cellists
This book is an excellent and precise treatment of the Alexander Technique.Although his examples are primarily for Cellists, Pianists, and singers, there's much that would apply to any musician.Occasionally academic, this book is well worth the patience.A moderate number of pictures are present.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stiff-necked
My teacher recommended this book as The Book To Read if I wanted to read a book about Alexander Technique as I was taking lessons. Obviously it's a book that works wonderfully for many people. I wasdisappointed, though. I found the book rigid and very dismissive of approaches the author didn't absolutely agree with, and obsessed with bolstering itself with citations and quotes. It almost deifies Alexander, and talks very specifically of positions etc. The impression I have of Alexander Technique from my lessons is completely different: it's about being open rather than closed to alternatives.5-0 out of 5 stars Musicians Read This!
Indirect Procedures stands by itself in the world of Alexander Technique books.Written by a cellist and Alexander teacher, it is the only book I know of exclusively devoted to musicians' issues. At the same time, it is a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of Alexander Technique with some photo illustrations. One caveat -Indirect Procedures is not light reading and this certainly sets it apart from most self-improvement books. It is thorough and detailed and very serious.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introduction to the Alexander Technique!
If you have heard of the Alexander Technique, but don't know much about it, or have heard a brief description from a friend that has left you befuddled, this book is an excellent introduction. If this book is not your first contact with the technique, I still highly recommend it.I had been taking lessons in the Alexander Technique for about a year when I first read it, and it provide a great supplement to what I had already learned.I often refer back to it.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you have an Alexader specialist nearby, otherwise...
That's a very interesting book, where you can learn about the importance of knowing your body in order to know how to use it. It can be very helpful if you intend to take Alexander Technique lessons. I bought the book because I thought this was THE book where you can learn something about the technique without taking lessons. That is not the case. The main problem is that Alexander was a fantastic pioneer on the field of sommatics but did not have the conceptual skills to transform its fantastic intuitions in an easily explainable system. If you do not have an Alexander teacher nearby you you should try Feldenkrais book Awareness Through Movement book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful supplement to taking lessons
I feel moved to respond to some of the reviews below, which seem to me to judge the book more in terms of what it is not, rather than what it is.This is an excellent book to read *as* you're taking lessons; the book provides a wonderful companion to your ongoing learning, offering some fascinating insights on body perception and habits of movement, insights that have stuck with me half a decade after I first read the book. It's a great book to browse through, reading chapters as they relate to your interests. What the book is *not* is an introduction for absolute beginners who've not heard of the technique before; it is intended for people who have taken or will take Alexander lessons, and in this it succeeds admirably.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the reading.
The auther seems to think it more important to be witty and wordy then to try to convey information. The book was painful to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to body mapping
Unlike many of the other reviewers, I have found this book to be an excellent introduction to body mapping and the Alexander Technique.I think the operative word is "introduction."This should not be thought of as an in-depth study of body mapping; for that, one should refer to Conable's book "How to use the Alexander technique."As both a professional singer and a voice instructor, I have found this simple book to be very useful. It is a helpful tool to introduce students to the very concept of body mapping (something that most people know nothing about...by the way, it's the study of the proper way to hold one's self and use one's body based on an accurate concept of one's physiology). It is also a helpful tool for someone who is familiar with body mapping to check yourself. If you want an in-depth study, this is not the book to use, but it is excellent to use in conjunction with other texts, especially a simple anatomy book. And, as to the cartoon-like drawings, they make it simple, and simple is a good way to start!

2-0 out of 5 stars WARNING!!! Read this before buying...
I bought this book thinking it would at least have some explanations. But no, it just is a picture book showing pictures of the different skeletal structures in the body. Buy this book ONLY if it is required for a class that you are taking on this where a teacher is there to fill in the explanations as it is USELESS without them.
2-0 out of 5 stars There must be a better book out there
This book is very cartoony and seems almost like a handout you might get at a seminar or a class. It is not necassarily bad, but it doesn't really give you detailed explanations on what you should do.It is more of an illustrated tour of various Alexander concepts.I am still searching for a good Alexander book, but I haven't found one yet so I can't recommend one, but there must be a better one out there, so try a different book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great product condition poor customer service
I have no quarrel with the product but their customer service needs some work.I had to contact them three times, and when I got a response, it was a sarcastic one.I never received a shipment notice and when I asked for a shipping date and a tracking number (if there was one), no response; I wanted to check US Postal. It was as if I was simply being ignored. Once again my item was great and better than expected. It was the customer service that knocked it down to four stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of art, magnificent, but not for beginners
This is a beautiful book, and a true testament to the power of LaTeX.It is also a great book for serious users of LaTeX, and probably as close to a 'must have' as there is.However, I would say that it should NOT be the first book you buy on LaTeX.This isn't meant as a criticism (note the 5 stars) but simply to point out that this book assumes knowledge.Once you've gotten your feet wet, and can do some basic things in LaTeX, you will almost certainly want to buy this book, as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the bible for LaTeX
This book is a "must have" for any LaTeX enthusiast. It's well worth the price.I recommend that first edition users upgrade to this one.The second edition packs a lot more material than the first edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great approach, with a bit of everything
This book pulls together a variety of spiritual concepts - feng shui, goddesses, purification/smudging, creating altars, use of stones and crystals, aromatherapy/scents in the home, and colors. It's really a great overview.Activities like spring cleaning and decluttering are covered as are specific rooms like bedrooms, kitchen, etc. There are some terrific photographs throughout the book which really inspire.I like that the author put all of this together into one book.I have other books that talk around all this - one on feng shui, one on crystals, one on potpourri, etc. This book ties them together and I feel like now I can go back to those other books and apply them better.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best "sacred space" books I've read
This book was a real "find" for me.I have several books on feng shui and space clearing, and this one was intuitive, yet practical at the same time.It is spiritual but loaded with remedies for clearing one's space on this earth while we are here!I never thought to talk to my house, yet it makes perfect sense! It reads almost like a novel and is just full of information.I wish I could go home from work now and continue with the "read"!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of different spiritual aspects of home
When I first looked over this book I did not get into it.But as I began to buy new furniture for a new home and pulled together my tastes and sytles (The Domain Book is great for that!), I found this book to be awonderfully insightful book that helped me to consider Feng Shui andblessing my home and many other spiritual and tangible aspects of thisplace called my home. 3-0 out of 5 stars An expensive PR piece
I'm interested in learning the Alexander Technique with no prior knowledge, so based on the other reviews I thought this book would help me get started. Unfortunately, the book is not a "Complete Illustrated Guide," but rather a brief illustrated overview of the Alexander Technique. Nor does the book provide a "Practical Program," but rather directs you to find a certified AT instructor to learn the technique that is illustrated but not taught in this book. If the title were changed to "An Illustrated Introduction to the Alexander Technique," that would be much more accurate. And the book is a good introduction, which is why it still rates 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Alexander Technique
I am so delighted that this wonderful book is receiving such great reviews from your readers. I am proud to say that I am connected with it since I commissioned the book and edited it very closely with the author. I do think this is the most remarkable book because it makes AT accessible to EVERYONE. Glynn is a remarkable teacher and this shows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the Alexander Technique
I'm certified to teach the Technique and gave it up years ago, frustrated with explaining the same thing over and over to the incredulous. Describing the Technique to someone who's never had lessons is like describing chocolate to one who's never tasted it.Their eyes glaze over and they nod politely, but you know they still don't havea clue.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Taoism

5-0 out of 5 stars Every line in 'simple taoism' will click.
'Simple Taoism' is an essential book for the person seeking peace in an ever growing world of technology and distractions. Stuck in a stuffy shopping centre one morning waiting for the car to be fixed, a sudden desire to escape to the library for a bit of peace and quiet brought me to the book 'Simple Taoism'. I read almost half the book in 2 hours and was so taken by it, I spent a considerable some of money photocopying the rest of the book to read later. 'Simple Taoism' explains itself in such a pure and simple way, you can not fail to understand its message. The book fills you with inspiration and helps you realise that you can experience true life-long happiness if you just stop trying so hard. Everyone is lead to believe that they will reach a point in their lives when they will have every thing they need to be happy, but how long will it take? .If you understand Taoism you will realise that you can be happy now. Through this book you will see that Taoism is just pure wisdom. Taoism is simply derived from observing the ways of nature

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Taoism provides a hand book for life.
Simple Taoism provides a handbook for life. Deceptively brief, it explains in plain language the basics of Taoism and builds on these with simple exercises to help you put the theory into practice. 5-0 out of 5 stars a genuine classic
Although Alexander's writing style is spectacularly convoluted by today's standards, anyone who patiently reads through this book will come to appreciate what a gem it is! With this work, Alexander presented an explicit technology by which you can gain access to your unconscious processes, and program them effectively. In one of the most important works of the twentieth century, Alexander here opens up the whole field of "learning how to learn", in an unprecedented way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Help! This book made me into the class "know it all". I'm in school starting my second career and I need to know anatomy. I was suppose to learn it for my first career but it never stuck. After reading Dr. Dimon's book I'm finding I know more than I thought I could know and it has been so easy. I'm begining to understand the intelligence of our design and the names of all the bones and muscles just flow out or me, (and I haven't even made an effort to memorized them).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Book on Anatomy
In "Anatomy of the Moving Body," Theodore Dimon, Jr. approaches his subject from a unique and focused perspective.By presenting anatomy in terms of function and evolutionary development and limiting his exploration to the neuromuscular system, Dimon has produced a book that is both user-friendly and fascinating. He manages the neat trick of lending clarity to this majestic subject while avoiding the pitfall of oversimplification.Of special interest in this regard is thelight beam he shines into the murky shadows of intimidating anatomical terminology, showing the reader that there's nothing there to fear.5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifying Anatomy
Dr. Dimon has written a clear and concise book demystifyinganatomy--I especially enjoyed learning the meanings of the Latin terms.A must for anyone interested in how we are designed for moving. ... Read more
