3-0 out of 5 stars Good, and with just a little tweaking could be even better
I think keeping a log of your daily exercise & food intake can be very beneficial; putting it all down on paper and reviewing it periodically motivates me to stay the course in my goal of leading a healthier lifestyle and also lets me see what areas I need to work on improving. However, this book really needs bigger spaces to write in, especially the meals sections, which seem tiny and cramped.I'd also prefer it if it was set up to check off your daily intake of fruits, vegetables, multi-grains, etc the way it is to monitor water consumption.I do enjoy the inspiring daily "words to live by", and as a cancer survivor who finds something positive in each new day, I really like the space to write in "a beautiful thing" everyday. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Workout Book
What I like best about this book is that Cory and her husband have puttogether a really comprehensive set of photographs illustrating how to dovarious exercises.I take this book to the gym with me for referenceduring my work out.The book has single handedly taught me some principlesof free weights.4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for weight training exercisers
I found this book to be a useful reference in my weight training program. Cory gives good examples of many exercises, from beginner to advanced.Ifind her exercises more similar to mens than any other women's fitness bookI've read.Because of this, it is most useful for the advanced weightlifter. One draw-back is that the publication date is old (1991).I wouldlove to see Cory update this book in the near future.Overall, a greatbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent workout and dietary advice from 5-time Ms. Olympia
Cory does an excellent job of describing exercises through text and pictures. Helps people of different fitness levels put together exercise programs for getting into shape. She also tailors special workout routines for those interested in preparing their bodies for any of 47 different sports. Excellent advice on aerobic exercise and nutrition. As a guy, I'm convinced the gorgeous pictures of Cory are worth the price of the book!Buy the book for that reason--and develop a great workout program for free! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading and disappointing
This book pretty much reads like one long advertisement for Don Colbert's OTHER books. On literally every single page, Don touches very lightly on a topic, and then directs you to read another book he's written on the subject if you'd like to learn more. There were a *few* fasting facts, but nothing new if you've ever read ANY other book about fasting. I urge you to save yourself the eight bucks, and instead possibly check out The Fasting Path by Stephen Harrod Buhner, which is a much more interesting and helpful fasting book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical for Beginners
I have read several of Dr. Colbert's books and enjoy them.I wanted to get the fasting book because I have never fasted but would like to give it a try to see if it would help with some health issues I am experiencing.I like this book because it is not recommending extreme fasting and offers a couple approaches, one that can transition you into fasting.I would recommend the book for beginners, such as myself. It is a quick read and gives enough facts to support the possibility fasting may be a benefit on several levels. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Photos....
I'm only reviewing the 4th Edition here -- and only a very small part, which is all I was able to glance at at the time...some photos of common exercises which the book advised against! Not just stuff like the sit-up which we now know to be bad for the back, but also side stretches, leg lifts, tilting/rolling the head backwards!Duck walks, the bridge...so many things which had been used during the tae kwon do training of my youth are listed as being dangerous here! You really must see the photos to know what I'm talking about...hopefully this Sixth Edition also has them -- it'll surprise even gym rats! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "Fat-free & Fit" Not Intended for the Serious Bodybuilder
Cory Everson paints a very different picture of herself in her book "Fat-free & Fit" than one might expect from a six-time Ms. Olympia winner.Instead of the hardcore routines and attitudes I was expected (and actually hoping for), this book reveals that Cory has mellowed considerably since those fighting early years of bodybuilding, and now has become much softer--in shape as well as personality.Cory reveals that much of her activity within the sport of bodybuilding was greatly reactionary, that her fear of failure pushed her beyond all positive limits. She claims that she was physically ignorant during that time period and that she ignored what her body was trying to tell her.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Nutritional Guide
Not long ago I wrote an E-mail to a major women's bodybuilder on an Internet website who offered nutritional advice.I am glad my query was not answered since I found a much more economical way to receive the most updated information on healthy dieting along with plenty of accompanying information on exercise in Cory Everson's fine book.Cory's dieting tips come from the latest information from the Food and Drug Administration along with the top think tanks in the health field worldwide. As for her exercise tips, I found the weight training information highly valuable since I am into that form of activity. She stresses a practical approach to both dieting and exercise, and the tips are beneficial to anyone concerned about staying fit at whatever age or level of activity, from the professional athlete to people exercising to maintain good health.I liked the fact that Cory's book was devoid of the kind of radical, pie in the sky, results promised instantly approach to diet taken by some authors in recent years. The accent remains on the practical at all stages.Cory tells her readers frankly that results will come only when motivated people are willing to exert effort to help themselves by following sensible approaches.1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed!!!
I got this book from the library. The more I looked through it the more disappointed I was. This seems more like a porno book than a book on exercise. I was totally disguisted with the revealing/distasteful picturesof Cory Everson and also the male model that posed with her. I will neverpick up a book by her again.I want to know how to get fit,but having tolook at porn pictures while doing it is not worth it!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars JUNK
I have been interested in improving my performance for years, and finally decided to take the plunge and look into heart-rate monitoring. This book does not really support a specific philosophy and who knows if the so called "science" is supportable. I also read "Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot" by John L. Parker and recommend it. It appears much more scientific and emphasizes recovery over training in a zone. Don't buy this book.Rory Donaldson roryd@brainsarefun.com

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that finally got me running successfully.
I do inline skating, skiing, and weight training, but every time I tried to take up running, I would hit a wall. I just couldn't run for long sessions, and after a few I would hurt something and give up. Then I read about Ed Burke in Outside. This book, along with Burke's "Optimal Muscle Recovery" (I tore an Achilles tendon and developed plantar fascitis from skating and skiing) and "Stretching" finally got me to understand that I wasn't building the base I needed in order to run better. By following the training programs in this book, I've greatly increased my capacity without injury, and am slowly seeing my speed increase. Also liked this book because it took a different approach for each covered sport, and it treated inline skating with the respect it deserves as an endurance activity.

2-0 out of 5 stars The book had some good information
I had bought the book to help me with Mtn. bike training and my son with running. The book didn't provide information for mtn. biking though it did have a section on road biking. The running chapter seemed incomplete. The major table that was supposed to explain the heart rate targets was not explained fully. Also, oddly, there is a quote in there that is identical in two chapters but attritubted to two different people!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Try this before you buy yourself that expensive exercise machine.
This program is simple indeed: 10 minutes of brisk walking or simple aerobic stepping, followed by 5 minutes of strength and flexibility routines usingtwo-5 lb. dumbells.Plus lots of good motivational advice. This is the minimum program-you can expand it by speeding up the walk, adding arm movements to the steps, more weight to the dumbells, or by adding a few more strength and flexibility routines. This author makes no presumptions about your physical abilities-if you need to start working out on a bed instead of the floor, he provides you with the basic tools and urges you to get started.I bought a perfectly good copy from one of Amazon's associated stores for a few dollars: I am doing it every day, and it really works for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars simple but useful
it is especially for people who aren't used to move a lot, for people who live a very sedentary life. and the book makes it very easy for them to change this life style into an active one. the workout routine it suggests is extremely easy to follow and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step-by-step illustrations demonstrate just how to do them
Don't have time to exercise? The last of the good excuses is gone with this guide to 15-minute, no-sweat workouts presenting 10 minutes of aerobic activity, 4 minutes of strengthening exercises, and 1 minute of stretches. Step-by-step illustrations demonstrate just how to do them, case history successes link exercises to positive results, and the author comes with credentials: he's directed the Occupational Health and Fitness program at the U.S. DOT for the past twenty-five years, and presented extensive seminars to business and government groups alike. With Quick Fit: The Complete 15-Minute No-Sweat Workout, even those who are most pressed for time have no excuse now.

5-0 out of 5 stars common sense guide to fitness
I really liked how the author differentiated between "overweight" and "overfat." You can be overweight, like a body builder, but not be "fat" by any means. I learned quite a bit here. Basically, good exercise (and he provides many, many tips on this) is the key to having a healthy body. And he doesn't think dieting is a good idea. I like this guy. If you're looking to get in better shape or lose weight, this book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BIBLE OF FAT LOSS!!
No other book describes what it takes to lose fat better than this one.Covert is brilliant at describing how the metabolism works in such a way that anyone can understand it.I refer to it oftenwhen my motivationslips because this book motivates as well as educates. It is pure commonsense which is something that is lacking in today's society. This book isall you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, easy to understand, informative, a great source
It was an excellent source of basic information for the newcomer to the fitness world. The chapters were easy to understand but were in depth enough get the point across. An excellent source for someone who wants toget in shape. However, if you want a more scientific, in depth discussion, this may be a bit too simple. ... Read more

Deciding to enter your first triathlon is a heady moment--you're ready for the challenge of a swim-bike-run race and pumped to get your body training. Chances are, though, that you're experienced in only one, maybe two of the sports. How do you incorporate the others? What kind of equipment do you need? 5-0 out of 5 stars Triathlon/Duathlon
I love this book because it gives you a normal everyday mojo's perspective on triathlons and duathlons.I recommend it to anyone who is a beginner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date!
I didn't realize how out of date this book was, or I would not have bought it.The book makes 80s-era references when it comes to diet, nutrition, and other books about fitness. He suggests that you'd better plan to spend a whole $45 dollars on a good pair of running shoes!
4-0 out of 5 stars A good start!
This book is a great way to enter the world of triathlon. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because it is slightly incomplete and references other books. However, I think anyone who really gets into tris will find that this is generally the case. Glad I found this book to get me started! Oh, and regarding Miles vs. Minutes: Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'll go with the Minutes system since world champions Mike Pigg and Mark Allen swear by it and I would be wary of the disparagement of this method from someone who has never done a triathlon. ...
