5-0 out of 5 stars Nia - A Healthier Exercise
I've read the entire book, and it is informative and easy reading. The exercises don't seem at all difficult.I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must--have
I have been involved with Nia for only a short time, but I know that it will be a long-term part of my life. It is an amazing process, not only physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. I have bought quite a few copies of this book and given them away to friends as a way invite them to check out the experience. It is very well done, and a pleasure to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book
This book was extremely informative, and when I attended a Nia class to learn more, the instructor was referencing her copy of the same book before starting the class!!!If you want to learn about this technique I would highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and useful!
It is the one of the best. It is more used for general fitness than serious weight lifter. Usually, it takes a few months to notice result in weight training, as such, it is important to keep a training log. For convenient and substainable motivation, I have used my mobile phone as a log from [...] in the gym.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.
What do you do when you've just been hired by a client who hasn't exercised in 26 years, or someone who has just been cleared by their docotor to workout? Well, the knowledge that I have is helpful, but sometimes you need to have the basic knowledge laid infront of you....and you kind of pick up whats really important.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been much better
I have started going to gym recently. Some questions always bothered me- should I go for fat burning/ cardio? What does target heart rate mean? Should I start lifting the weights or concentrate on running/walking? What should I do to avoid soar muscles the next day? I see different equipments here, which one corresponds to which muscle building? Why strecthing/cool down procedure is important? and list goes on. This book has answered most of the my questions in a simple informative way than any other book I found at borders book store. But the book is certainly not a complete one. For example, the streching exercises given mainly concentrate on upper body. IMHO, the streching exercises are not very elegant for a people in thier mid 20s. I felt that the book could have avoided certain supplementary details. For instance, I dont see why author should talk SO much about the forms ecto, endo & meso. Overall, the shallowness of issues is fine from a beginners point of view but the breadth of the topics to be covered could have been greater. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
It's nothing but an exercise book. I don't need a book to know that exercise is good for me. I'm not sure what I expected but this book wasn't it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A totally new book, and it really works!
I had bought the original Fit or Fat book many years ago, and may have been the only person on the planet who didn't know that Covert Bailey continued to write new books. I bought this one recently, and discovered it is an entirely new book. The basic premise is still there, but everything else is new, like pulling into your driveway and finding anew, bigger house with more rooms on the old foundation. There is lots of additional information, and even the old jokes and illustrations have been replaced by new ones. Some reviewers are apparently annoyed that Covert does not endorse their pet ideas or theories on fitness, but the bottom line is that this book works. I lost fat with the first book before changes in my schedule caused me to neglect exercising for several years -- well, that's lame my excuse anyway. Then I decided to get serious again, and bought the new "ultimate" book and applied it (including wind sprints and weight lifting) and began losing fat again within weeks, and people are noticing! This book is my coach now, and I'm glad I discovered it. I do wish metric equivalents were included (we don't have pounds, inches, or miles where I live) but I can make the conversions easily enough myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars very practical and understandable
Ultimate Fit and Fat is an easy and quick read.Just as he did in his earlier book Smart Exercise, Bailey discusses the importance of exercising over dieting in improving and maintaining one's fitness. The recommendations that he makes regarding exercise are practical and easy to implement. I would strongly recommend this book to people who would like to improve their fitness AND understand the process of improving their health. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jumping for joy
This little book met and exceeded my needs. It has prompted me to get back on my mini tramp or rebounder and I am already feeling the benefits.

1-0 out of 5 stars Whom are we kidding?
I had bought the book on the strength of the seemingly unanimous five-star reviews. It became clear within minutes that this is the proverbial caveat emptor. One is left wondering how many of these reviews are planted by friends and/or relatives because - anyone with half a brain is able to quickly determine that the book is mostly rubbish. It is a self-published job, amateurishly produced and even more amateurishly written. It has 96 numbered pages, but chapter 1 only starts on p. 11 and the last chapter ends on p. 82. In between you have another 13 pages of blah testimonials with photos of those giving them - likely the author's idea of flattering all her friends ("Oh look, I'm in a book"). Need I say that all the photos, besides being of execrable quality, are well nigh useless on the instructional front? The author is a "certified reboundologist". Correspondence course, anyone? She is "dedicated to...assisting people to care for their Holy Temples for...planetary healing". 'Nuff said?
5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, Easy and VERY Informative
This book only has 100 pages, big pictures but LOTS of great information.I didn't think I would get as much info as I did! They gave you some ideas what to do on your rebounder and how easy it is.You don't need to spend hours on it to get in good shape.

4-0 out of 5 stars good place to start
I thought that it was a volume 2 to "walking for pleasure exercise" but it is really a revision of it. So either one is sufficent, no need for both books by this author. Covers the topics needed to get a good start on exercise walking, a little bit more on diet than the earlier book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good choice for beginners
Malkin's book is excellent for the beginner. I can say that because I am one.5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly informative!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost 80 lbs
A friend of mine has actually lost 80 lbs. using this breathing technique - yes it is difficult to believe but true. She was around a size 21 and is now a size 14.She is losing a pound a day.Wow!! What amazing results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adaptable exercise for the differently abled.
A friend of mine who weighed over 400 pounds first introduced me to Oxycise because it was the only exercise he could do, and the system, combined with a lowish-carbohydrate regimen did help him to normalize his weight for the first time in his adult life. I also have another friend who navigates life most often from a wheelchair, and she uses Oxycise, adapting the routines to her needs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Works, within reason.
I did this program for about five months and was pleased to find that it actually did work, and it does feel good. You can lose weight on it (I lost about 10 pounds in 3-4 months) and it does develop you aerobically. (Ifound myself less out-of-breath when I exerted myself in whatever task Ihad on hand.) You can do as much as you like and as little as about 15minutes a day, and this is a =real= 15 minutes, not an =exercise= 15minutes, which normally doesn't include warming up, cooling down, showering, changing clothes, et cetera.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, whether your a beginner or not...
Although I prefer Dr. Cooper's first book, "Aerobics" this book is also well written, easy to understand, and conveys the importance of aerobic (principly in the form of jogging/running) as presented by the author.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE AUTHORITATIVE WORK ON THIS SUBJECT
I bought'Aerobics' by this author in 1975 when I was 43 and slipping into the state where I was puffing to tie my shoe laces
5-0 out of 5 stars Health for life
Dr. cooper throughly explains how your body (mainly the heart and lungs) works. The book is about his studies on aerobic exercises and how it affects the body. He talks alot about his subjects and thier conditions and how aerobics helped rid themselves of thier problems. I would say to anyone who is serious about thier health, to buy this book. It's for those who are obese, those with heart and lung conditions and even those who have problems sleeping. This book is basically for anyone and everyone. Buy this book and it may help you live longer and healthier. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe wheat- and dairy-free, but NOT gluten-free!
I had high hopes for this book, but they were quickly dashed when I discovered that every single recipe relies on barley flour. What's the point of wheat-free recipes that still contain gluten? I would not have bought this off a store shelf had I been able to leaf through it more thoroughly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the brownies!
This is a great cookbook for vegan bakers. The brownies are simply amazing - my wife can not believe that they are vegan (compared to my other attempts at vegan brownie making). The recipes are really easy to follow and the ingredients are all available at the local grocery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget like I did --- Wheat-free is not gluten-free
I really wasn't thinking when I ordered this book. I'm sensitive to dairy and gluten, and I try to avoid white sugar, so I've had a difficult time finding recipes for treats. Gluten-free recipes tend to have processed sugar. Recipes using sugar alternatives like fruit juice (not artificial sweeteners - yuck) tend to use gluten grains. Barley flour is the flour used in this cookbook. I could probably come up with a gluten-free alternative, but I don't know how to substitute for oatmeal. All the cookie recipes, except macaroons, have oatmeal. But the recipes sound fabulous, so if you don't have a problem with gluten, I'd give it a try. I'm definitely going to try substituting the flour in some of the muffin and bread recipes. ... Read more

This book is very systematic and teaches basic and intermediate technique in an easy to follow format. The strength of this book is the descriptions and the pictures that match many of the descriptions. The focus on safety and confidence-building drills "before you roll" make this a good book for us beginners. This book would augment any class. But here in rural Utah where there are no inline skating classes, the drills allow one to practice in stages using the book alone. The author DOES recommend professional instruction and says early on not to depend on the book alone... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Modern version of Dynamic Tension
Powerflex is an execellent book on Bodyweight exercises. His writer Jim Forystek was a follower of Charles Atlas and has stay faithful to the perfection of building muscles in the absence of the use of weights. I love the way the book exercise routines are structured. For each exercise the book has 3 levels of repetitions, making it easy to follow the routine. I've been using it for over 8 months and feel my body has improved a great deal. Some parts I believe Powerflex could have improved is in providing pictures for the Speed and Endurance exercises, providing exercises for the calves and forearms and in providing nutritional information. Otherwise, Powerflex is an excellent addition to any bodyweight exercise library.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's worth it.
I found the book well structured. The exercises easy to understand. The book is worth the buy. Think about how much money people spend on gym fees and buying bulky equipment. If your just starting out and want a easy method that can be done any where, Powerflex is a great place to start.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't be mislead by the Chest Picture!
I must say I was a bit disappointed with this book. John Peterson in a way is partly the reason for this. For those who don't know, John Peterson has the best book on using a 'no weights system' for training and building your body. I have John's pushing yourself to power and it's so good that everything else compared to it is almost a one star. So in a way giving Jim a 3 star is effectively saying it's the best of the rest. I've got harry wong's book, the charles atlas book; the complete book of isometrics and now powerflex.

1-0 out of 5 stars Silly
Well, I was given this book as a gift, and, although it's humorous in a sick sort of way, it's certainly not a real workout. How many cats are really going to sit patiently while you do your third set of curls? No cat I've ever met. I think it would be more realistic if Stephanie Jackson were shown in her poses, covered in scratches inflicted by a pissed-off cat.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
I've already tried catflexing, and my cat, Mulder, absolutely loves it! It is actually a good workout, and it is so much more fun than any other workout I've tried. 5-0 out of 5 stars The "Purr"-fect Gift for Lovers of Cats & Fitness!
Stephanie Jackson has crafted an endearing and informative "tale" that reflects her lifelong love of both cats and fun exercise. The tongue-in-cheek commentary will beguile even the mildest of cat fanciers--and she even includes several little-known pointers about cat nutrition.Even if your cats decide to remain inquisitive spectators, they'll enjoy watching **you** play with human toys (i.e., barbells) in their stead. Can't wait to see the video! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars tried it, I'll pass....
After doing Joyce's 'Bone-building body-shaping workout' for a few months, I did not enjoy 'Definition' as much. The full pyramid method was a real bore - too much of the same thing, sorry to be so honest.I am also confused as to what 'definition' really means, if it does not involve adding ANY bulk.As some others mentioned, putting avocados on the forbidden food list really saddened me - we eat avocados every day while they are in season because they are delicious, and cheap where we live.As far as the workout goes, I am looking for a few to rotate through every few weeks, but 'Definition' will not be one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Weight Resistance Plan that REALLY Works
Joyce Vedral's book "Definition" provides a weight resistance plan that even the most resistant of exercisers can undertake and still achieve results.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love that Joyce!
With all due respect to the reviewer who had negative comments about Joyce's diet suggestions: yes, she does have some "forbidden foods;" but, if you had read the diet closely, you would see that there is no danger of feeling deprived or binging if you follow what she says. With Joyce's diet you get one entire "cheat day" per week. That means that you can eat doughnuts, pasta, peanut butter and avocados all day long if you want just as long as you follow the diet for the other six days.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good general introductory approach to conditioning based on intervals
Interval Training (IT) is systemic conditioning based on low intensity activity punctuated with bursts of high intensity activity.IT has an advantage over "aerobics" done at constant pace because the high intensity phase triggers growth hormone and other effects that are never quite achieved by extended low intensity training. This means that you can achieve benefits beyond those of aerobic training for athletes and also for weight control and general fitness.IT does not neccessarily replace low intensity training entirely, nor does it replace more specialized strength or flexibility work where needed. It is a concept with its own niche in physical training.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but limited.
This book discusses interval training and is a good starting point for anyone who is new to the concept. However it is basic, and unless you have no idea what is meant by "interval training" then you will not learn anything new.At its heart the message is, go really fast for a minute, then slow down for two minutes, repeat until done.5-0 out of 5 stars The Interval Training Workout: Build Muscle and Burn Fat
I love training this way. It is so efficient. I've lost more weight using the intervals than just doing one activity for 30 minutes without speeding up or slowing down. I especially love the XL (I usually run on Sunday nights and it clears my head for the week).Read more
