2-0 out of 5 stars Good for the neophyte, nothing new
This is a good book to have if you know nothing about nutrition and want to learn some of the basics. You can collect all the basic information here through general Internet research. True, it's nice to have it all in one place in a logical format, but I really expected much more detailed advice for a book targeted specifically to endurance athletes than 'you need to manage your carbohydrates over the length of the event'-type advice. Not worth the money in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to digest (sorry!) and helped my riding a lot
Ryan's writing is clear and effective. I had some of the basic concepts, but reading her book really clarified how to eat before, during, and after long bike rides. Since reading her book I've set a number of PRs for long rides, due in large part to changing my pre-ride and recovery eating habits. I strongly recommend this book to any endurance athlete who wants to feel better while running or cycling. It's the next-best thing to seeing a nutritionist in person (which I also recommend).

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Sports Nutrition Book
As a coach, I want my athletes to not only be training well, but using sound nutritional strategies.

1-0 out of 5 stars underwhelmed
I ordered what I thought was a full size intro to yoga book and got the pee wee version for elves. I had been breathlessly waiting for my full size edition to arrive in the mail because I was so excited to be starting yoga. As I held the pitifully small thing in my hand I got so depressed because it reminded me of some bad relationships i've had in the past--big promises and nothing to back it up with. I binged on a quart of dulce de leche ice cream and a dozen black bottom cupcakes to try to numb my pain. These evil satanic deceivers must be stopped.

4-0 out of 5 stars For beginners
This basic manual for Pilates is especially helpful because of the cautions about avoiding poor form while you're doing the exercises. The limitations of any book attempting to teach you how to do physical movements is offset by the authors' knowledge of what mistakes typical beginners make.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not good for a complete novice.
I'm training for a certain activity and was told that Pilates would be great to do because many people in the sport do it.I knew _absolutely nothing_ about Pilates.I asked around at local fitness clubs but couldn't find any instructors.Lacking local instruction, I bought this book based on the recommendations here.
5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure chest of Pilates exercises for a hard body
Joseph H. Pilates, the German inventor of the Pilates exercise method must be smiling in the heavens. The lifelong pacifist who was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880... devoted his life to the study of physical education. He moved to the United States in 1926 and afterwards became active with the New York City Ballet."Pilates; body in motion," by Alycea Ungaro of Tribeca Bodyworks is a treasure chest of Pilate exercises for a hard body.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low Calorie, Complex Carb, Low Glycemic Diet Book
Denise Austin's book, if you follow her plan, will help you lose weight. It comes from keeping calories very low (fewer than 1500 a day), eating complex carbs and protein, and exercising. There is nothing here that a person cannot get off the internet for free or in a fitness magazine from the grocery store.Austin has "daily dozen" exercises, which are a cross between yoga moves and calisthenics, and she says 30 minutes of walking a day is also necessary. Duh. She also points out the the Daily Dozen are really for people who are sedentary and not those who already are pretty fit. Another thing that bugged me was that she "tried" the low-carb diet for ONE day and it made her tried and cranky so she KNEW that it was bogus. Well, I'm not saying Atkins is the way to go, but when I went off sweets for a month I wanted to die either by my own hand or someone else's -- I was so miserable with headaches and mood swings that I thought I was hitting early menopause, yet no one would tell me that I should keep eating Hostess Ding Dongs if they make me feel better.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info, not enough good recipes
Denise is great with providing a ton of useful information in this book. The recipes weren't as appealing as I thought they would be. I read the book for the first couple days that I had it, but haven't opened it since. The recipes really did nothing for me to actually attempt to make them.

1-0 out of 5 stars If anyone eats 1300 calories...
you are going to lose weight.I don't care what you eat.I was initially attracted to this book because I agree that eating "no carbs" is a gimmick and nutritionally unsound. But to claim that diabetics can eat small portions of white flour and sugar is like telling an alcoholic they can just have one glass of wine.Irresponsible! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific workout for beginners or masters
This is a great workout for getting into shape or staying in shape. These exercises help build flexibility and strength. The exercises start out simple and slowly build in complexity. If you get to a point where you don't feel quite up to moving on just keep doing the exercises you are comfortable with until you feel ready for more. Most of the exercises are simple enough that you can do them anywhere. You might get strange looks from people, but don't let that stop you.
3-0 out of 5 stars transforming body and soul
When asked if I would like to review a book called The Shaolin Workout, 28 Days to Transforming Your Body and Soul the Warrior's Way, by Sifu Shi Yan Ming, I paused not quite sure that I needed to be transformed the warrior way. However, my doctor is always preaching the benefits of having a good workout and feeling a little guilty because mine is somewhat lacking, I said why not? After having two children, my life has changed quite dramatically. I have given up my job as a librarian to stay home with my babies. We also, have pigs, a few dozen chickens, and a goose, as well as a large garden. So my idea of a workout entails chasing chickens from said garden, lugging a Kirby vacuume up-stairs, or dancing to the tune of Victor Vito with my children three to five times daily. I also should add that I haven't slept through the night in three years and am somewhat addicted to coffee. Like I need to learn Kung Fu!

5-0 out of 5 stars Prevent Backaches!
Gelb writes very clearly, with good illustrations describing F. M. Alexander's technique for good body use. Many actors, singers, and dancers use this technique, and many people who suffer from joint andmuscle disabilities can benefit from this book. Gelb's personal experiences help the reader to understand how to benefit from the techniques and exercises he describes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The clearest book on AT out there
If you are studying the Alexander Technique - whether just beginning or a more advanced student - this book is a Must!Easy to read and digest, it should be on every teacher's list. However, it is important to note that the Alexander Technique can not be learned by reading books alone.Reading this book is not a way to learn the technique. But it is a terrific supplement to private individual lessons with a good teacher!

I started practicing the Alexander Technique over the last couple months. My teacher "assigned" me this book to read, as part of our work together. It's an outstanding book. It's very clear and easy to read.Gelb offers many anecdotal stories and quotes and other stuff like that to make it more enjoyable and inspiring. He tells the fascinating story of how Dr. Alexander developed the technique. Then he proceeds to give a clear and practical explanation of all the different aspects of the technique.I learned a lot! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wanna A Be A Pro Pool Player
I read the book the week before entering a pool tournament. This tournament I have played in for several years, and I never came close to cashing. After reading the book and trying what it suggested I finished 8th out of 98 players and cashing for over $300.What I'm proud of the most is not the 8th place finish or the cashing, it is the level I performed at during the tournament. It works it is just a matter of time to practice what the book shows you.

The book is technical and practical without being overly academic.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was great
This is the best book that I have ever read. His life is just really interesting to me.It might be because im a runner too, but i dont care. All the things that he does.Like how he just starts to run becasue he cant play football with the other kids. Also how he says when he is in high school that he is going to go to the Olympics. He Is an insperation to many runners. With him dying so young just makes his story all the more tragic. His tenacity is what I most like about him.How he says that he doesn't go out to race to win the race, but to see who has the most guts.I always wished that i could be like Pre, but he was just a star beyond me.Every time I race I think of his famous quote, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." That just inspires me to work harder and run faster. It is just a great book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Someday someone will write the Great Book
A good book and overview of Prefontaine's life and the one you will see in quality running stores. Very good capsule on his life and racing competition with a great set of pictures. However, Pre is such a fascinating subject whose rash and bold method of running also ocurred during the peak of the Amnerican running boom that there never seems to be enough information or pictures of him. I keep thinking someone will write another deeper book. Jordan's book is well worth reading and possibly the best book on Pre but the obvious problem was Pre's life was
5-0 out of 5 stars PRE: story of america's greatest running legend
For five years, no American runner could beat him at any distance over a mile. But at the age of 24, with his best years still ahead, long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine finally lost. Driving alone at night after a party, Prefontaine crashed his sports car, putting a tragic, chocking end to the life and career of one of the most influential, accomplished runners of our time. More than 20 years later, Pre continues to influence the running world. From his humble origins in Coos Bay, Oregon, Pre became the first person to win four NCAA titles in one event. Year after year, he was virtually unbeatable. Instead of becoming one of the new breeds of professional track athletes, Pre chose to stay amateur and fight for the adequate funding he felt American amateur athletes deserved. A man of incredible desire and energy, Pre trained relentlessly. In his drive to be the best, he spurred others to do their best. As one racer said, "He ran every race as if it were his last." But Pre not only touched runners, his exciting racing technique as well as his maverick lifestyle made him a favorite of the fans. A race with Prefontaine in it was automatically an event. His brief but brilliant life is the tale of a true American hero. I really enjoy running so that's why I liked this book a lot, it was very interesting too. It talks about his whole life from when he went to high school to when he went to the Olympics. It also has a lot of pictures of him too. I really recommend this book it's really good, if you want to learn about a person who became a legend you should read this book. If you really like running this is the perfect book to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Expressing the Human Body
There was a time that I was skeptical that a 145 lb., 5'7", individual could have anything to offer as far as offering instruction on building tremendous physical strength and acheiving combat skills that are rivaled by few. This book deals with the first point...that of building tremendous physical strength which would be utilized for acheiving excelling combat skills. Great insight into the mind of a man who I once doubted could acheive such greatness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technique is wisdom. To train is power.
What an outlandishly brilliant collection of Bruce Lee's personal training regimine. This is utterly priceless for its detail and stark showing of Bruce's true grit.It was a fight at a local dojo instigated by a rival martial arts group in China Town, San Francisco (actually they disapproved, as many did, Bruce's teaching such high quality lessons to Americans - really can't blame them) that spurred Bruce on to investigate and finally put to practice the lessons of bodybuilding and strength training.Extreme conditoning also - i.e. lots of cardio (2-6 mile jogs; 45 minute stationary biking; interval training, where you sprint several hundred yards then jog, then sprint, then jog and so on).
1-0 out of 5 stars Dont' bother
I was very disappointed in this book. It's not quite sure what it's supposed to be, and so, ends up being nothing. There are endless lists of workout routines that Bruce Lee supposedly used. But, they usually have little or no explanation, so are useless. There is no, repeat no, nutritional info that you can't find in a free booklet in any supermarket. There are weight training guidelines for rank beginners, but nothing that hasn't been done better by weight training or martial arts magazines.

I just got this book. Thought I'd try it for prevention. I don't have any wrinkles or sagging yet. One thing I noticed that made me very leery: The people shown in the before and after pictures are wearing the exact same clothing, including accessories. The pictures were supposedly taken 7 days apart. I e-mailed the company and asked about this; I told them it made me think some Photoshop had been used. I was told they purposely had the models wear the same clothes and makeup. Ummm...OK. Also, the instructional pictures in this book don't really show you anything. In fact, most of the sequential photos are identical. I asked about this too, and I was told to buy the DVD. Ummm...OK.
5-0 out of 5 stars Changed me forever!!
I cant believe how incredible 15 min. a day can change your life. I work out 1 hr. a day in the gym and never had as many compliments as I do now since I started doing the Facercise program. People say I look younger and have a smoother face . Also my skin color is more vibrant with a healthy glow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stirring Art
Etta Clark scores with Growing Old is Not For Sissies II.Her book is filled with beautiful photography and a second look at some of the subjects from her first book. With frank honesty, she captures the essence of her subjects once again. An excellent book of art for any fan of photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Anyone Working in Gerontology
This book is a must for anyone who works with older adults. It is a photographic essay of some very special people....people who embrace the robustness of life, and who are disciplined to maintain their capabilities as long as possible. Our world is steeped in ageism, that is, believing that older people are only capable of doing things that are "appropriate" for their age. This book shatters those beliefs and provides living examples of people who continue doing what they love to do physically.I wish that Etta Clark would revise this book with a new set of photos every year!I have seen some of these photos over and over again in lectures that people give about aging. It is a book to be owned, not borrowed.

5-0 out of 5 stars So inspiring, I think I'll run a marathon!
Just one look at the photos and all your excuses for being a couch potatogo out the door. This book is filled with inspirational photos of seniorathletes.Helen Zechmeister, age 91, works out 3 days a week, deadlifts200 pounds and can do the full splits.A competitive swimmer, MarieWilcox-Little at 73 has a much better figure than I could ever hope to have(I'm merely 30).My favorite: Ivor Welch,(Volume 1)was never active until83 when his wife his wife passed away.To mourn her death he startedwalking, then running, then running marathons.By the age of 90 he ranfive marathons and 2 half marathons! If Ivor can do it, by golly, so canI!A must have for anyone who wants to enjoy life to its fullest! ...
