5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books you will ever read.
This was one of my favorite books to read in college. Not only is it in depth, but thought provoking into an area that you might not be interested in. This book takes you into a whole new world. The author is in depth and amazing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Phenominal
From my background as a biologist, this book really covers the topic with strong support and detail. From my perspective as a reader, it's a true page-turner that doesn't just accomplish its point, but goes well beyond.Sapolsky brilliantly makes incredibly complex systems seem simple and mechanistic by breaking them into manageable pieces and using strong analogies, making a prior knowledge of neuroscience unecessary.Humorous, witty, and easy-to-understand, this book is a must for anyone remotely interested in the topic of stress!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating tour of how stress impacts the body
This new edition of why Zebra's Don't Get Ulcers is extensively revised and exceeds earlier additions in terms of explaining the effects of stress on the body. This is a very detailed exploration, but well worth the sometimes difficult reading. If you don't have some sort of background in biology, you may find that you have to read it a bit more slowly.

Finally a helpful book anyone can understand.Lots of informative sections on everything from gallbladder attachs, IBS, to ulcers.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother. Its mostly drivel
Hey. Don't be fooled by all the positive reviews. This isn't really a book about bowel problems. Its about anecdotal, unsupported, stories about some people who might have improved anyway. No science. No pretense of science. Not much information. Just look at how many used copies are for sale. Save your money. Stop going to MacDonalds, go home and cook yourself a good meal. Get a cookbook. Learn to cook. Don't buy this book. Drivel

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for patients and doctors
As a naturopathic physician, treating the gut is a core principle. This book was recommended by one of my teachers and now that I am a practicing doctor I often refer back to this book. It offers patients (and doctors) a look at how true healing of the gut is approached. I highly recommend this book to all people. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Why don't zebras get ulcers--or heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases--when people do? In a fascinating look at the science of stress, biologist Robert Sapolsky presents an intriguing case, that people develop such diseases partly because our bodies aren't designed for the constant stresses of a modern-day life--like sitting in daily traffic jams or growing up in poverty. Rather, they seem more built for the kind of short-term stress faced by a zebra--like outrunning a lion.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Stress
This is an extraordinarily well-written book about stress. The information contained is quite technical, but the author does a superb job of illustrating these technical concepts with everyday things the average person can understand.Garden hoses, toilets, the banking system and, of course, zebras, are all employed at one point or another to explain the physiology of stress. There are not really any practical ideas here for managing stress; the focus is more on how stress affects the various systems of the body. You will, however, have an amazing understanding of all of these intricate mechanisms by the end of the book!Copious end notes flesh out some concepts which are over-simplified in the main text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sapolsky is the best!
I had the wonderful opportunity to take a couple of Dr. Sapolsky's classes at Stanford U., where he never failed to make people bust a gut. Not only is this book a good introduction to the fascinating world of stress, it is simply an enjoyable read. It will definitely help to improve your lifestyle and your health. A must buy! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for GERD sufferers
This book has it all; concise explanations of the etiology of each gastroenterologic problem and simple practical solutions.Generally, the doctor proposes a high fiber, low fat diet but each patient has to tailor their diet to their own specific needs as clearly there are certain foods that are fine for some, an irritant for others.I would note that contrary to one reviewer, I have made a number of the recipes. They are fairly simple, mostly typical ingredients and have been delicious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative; not bogged down with technical language
If you could purchase one book on GI issues, this should be it.My copy is filled with notes and highights and I have recommended it to many of my friends.I found the technical jargon to be quite easy to comprehend (yes, I know I am also a Dr., but trust me -- we appreciate the simplified lanauge as well). The author also integrates a nutritional aspect, although some of the info can be quite contradictory (check out the cooking section...).Overall, I LOVE this book and I have brought it on many a Dr's visit. Its quite impressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind, the maps are not so good... but the text is a must.
Of course, I practically agree at 100% with everything the other reviewers have said, but let's be fair deducing stars because the maps are sketchy (at best), and sometimes irritatingly not shown with NORTH at the top of the page (???)... is not a good policy when the main objective of the book IS PERFECTLY ACOMPLISHED!, explaining the whole context of the Peninsular War, so for once the view is not restricted to Moore's + Wellington's campaigns, and the battle of Bailen, the sieges of Zaragoza and Girona, and a lot of actions on the East, South and North of the main (from a purely british point of view) actions are fully accounted for .
3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
This is the first history of the Peninsular War that I've read, so on the one hand I can't compare it to other works on the subject as some other reviewers have done. On the other hand, I perhaps view the book differently since I am outside of that context.
4-0 out of 5 stars A one volume history of the Peninsular War
David Gates' "The Spanish Ulcer" provides one of the very few single volume histories of the Peninsular War that attempts to address the entire conflict and not focus on, for example, the exploits of the Anglo-Portuguese Army.Gates addresses the actions of the Imperial French, the struggles of the Spanish politicians, armies and guerillas, and the fiasco of Portugal prior to the British intervention. That Gates manages to do in one volume what Charles Oman required seven volumes to cover is, however, both a strength and a weakness. On the one hand, students of the era now have a single reasonably comprehensive summary of the Peninsular War phase. On the other hand, of necessity, much of the detail of a very complex conflict is compressed, while the narrative tends to jump from place to place. Some advance knowledge of the conflict is almost required to make sense of the many moving parts.Unfortunately, the maps provided in the text are not well designed and more confusing than helpful.Readers are advised to track the action on their own large map of the Iberian Peninsula. This book is strongly recommended to those with an interest in the Peninsular War but not the time or energy to work through the longer studies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but could use improvement
This book is easy to read. The author describes the various stages of digestion, the role that friendly bacteria plays in digestion, and discusses probiotic treatment options for various illnesses. However, there is a chapter that recommends how to buy probiotics.I realized that it only leads to one brand of friendly bacteria, which happens to endorse the book. Most of the other probiotic brands are ruled out through various comments.I made the mistake and bought the recommended strand, thinking they were the best and there were no other options available.Be aware that other stuff is out there, and the information in the book doesn't give an objective picture of what to buy.

Perfect! Just what I was looking for. Lots of information in a small easy to read pamphlet. Good starting point for more in depth research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, thorough, understandable
Needing to do some research on the subject of DHA, I selected this book without any expectations. However, I was very pleased by the author's apparent knowledge of the subject matter, and her ability to explain fairlycomplicated concepts without being tedious or condescending. DHA as anutritional supplement isn't all that well-known as yet, but I feel sure itwill become a household word in the near future. As that time approaches, and people want to learn more on the subject, this author should prove tobe an excellent resource. I have read this book pretty carefully andthoroughly, and have learned a lot from it.I will be buying more of herbooks on other subjects. ... Read more
