3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book
"Kids in the syndrome Mix..." is a good reference book, listing disorders and giving tips for parents and teachers that should help them understand the children in the syndrome mix better. However, I feel it lacks in-depth information and details on direct application in the classroom. That might be beyond the scope of the book; therefore, you will have to look for that information elsewhere. In conclusion, the book serves the purpose of a stepping stone for further study - or it can be read as a quick guide, depending on your level of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read - Lots of Information
This book is useful for so many reasons. It is great for teachers or others who intereact with individuals with a variety of special needs. It is perfect for parents who are trying to narrow down/begain to understand their child's diagnosis. It is perfect for a child who has an Alphabet Soup diagnosis - multiple dx - for one book which address all of them.I would reccomend you read this book!!It is well writen and full of great information

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher With Tourette Syndrome (TS)

5-0 out of 5 stars A true story of real courage
Brad Cohen's first hand account of how he became a teacher despite having Tourette's syndrome isn't great writing, but if you've ever known someone with Tourette's you know how amazing his story is. Happily most people today know what this disease is--as I was growing up with a brother who had it, no one did. If you haven't seen it, it's hard to imagine the noises, tics, cursing, and mental agony of living with this incurable problem. Cohen's book gives an intimate look at what it feels like to have your body taken over by urges that can't be controlled. He also sensitively portrays the distress and confusion of parents who try to deal with a problem for which modern medicine is almost useless. Again we see a situation where young children in the classroom can accept behaviors that the wider world can't tolerate, and Cohen's openness about his problem with these children is the secret of his success. One gets the sense Cohen's life will always be a struggle--although he has many friends there's no mention of a woman in his life, and gaining acceptance with new people is always going to be a risky business. But his courage is amazing. This book should be required reading for any child who doubts his worth as a person because of this terrible disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Front of the Class
This was the most amazing book I've ever read. My son was recently diagnosed, and I am so encouraged after reading Brad's book. He is reading it himself now. I am an elementary classroom assistant as well, and am grateful for the insight it provided me in working with students with various disabilities. I think reading this book should be a requirment for all teachers, and anyone working in the school setting, regardless of thier position. Thanks so much Brad! I was so sorry when the book ended, because I enjoyed reading it so much. I am purchasing it as a gift for a teacher as well. I will enjoy telling many people about this very special book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Leckman and book is right on.
I bought this book after I found it mentioned in several posts and chat rooms for Tourette's Syndrome. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to have in your reference library
Even if you work with only one or two children with Tourette's Syndrome, this compilation of over 25 years of research results with a client base of thousands is an excellent resource to have in your reference library. Thedocumentation of multidisciplinary contributions makes it convenient toexplore concepts further without having to search through a wide variety ofprofessional journals. Two useful features include the summary of onechapter and preview of the next on the same page and the assessment toolsfound in the Appendices. The recommended treatment approach focuses onsupporting development of the child over time, rather than just eliminatingsymptoms. A multidisciplinary team of professionals can provide a varietyof treatment approaches to address the factors affecting the child at homeand at school. Coordination by a flexible, non-doctrinaire clinician, andpartnerships with parents and teachers are encouraged. While the authorssuggest that the school psychologist fill this role, not all schools haveaccess to one with the necessary perspective on treatment. Instead, thelicensed professional social worker is more likely to employ themultidisciplinary, strengths-based, coordinated approach to caring forchildren with Tourette's Syndrome and related conditions. Contributionsfrom licensed professional social workers would be an asset to the nextedition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A label only tells about symptoms, not the causes.
Pauc's "the Learning Disability Myth" is fast, clear and easy to read. Using all the latest neurological research, he cuts through the educational jargon that gives a name to your child's difficulties, but would not get rid of what is actually causing the symptoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars This helped.
I am 19 and when I was in elementary school tourette's was still looked upon by many proffessionals and most authority as something that "didnt exist"or the parents fault. My [...] teacher mrs. streneva used to poke me so hard in the chest when i disbehaved that i recieved many bruises on my chest. the doctors said i would never make it through public school. My mom paid 40 some dollars for this book back then, and we didnt have alot of money, and it cost a fortune, and this book was my moms treasure and she never ever let me hold it and never ever let any of the teachers borrow it, instead, she made then copied pages & such, and then the teachers would request more information on a topic and my mom would copy it from this book. this book educated alot of authority and all the teachers at Pleasant Elementary in Warren, Pennsylvania. This is a big miracle, I have a huge thanks for the writers who did this. This book is a 100% MUST HAVE for ANYONE with ANY amount of children with tourettes syndrome, ADHD, Depression, bi poklar, or any such. It is a strictly MUST HAVE. I reccomend this with everything in my heart and for helping me get through elementary school. As for for making it through public school? I am now a freshman at edinboro university of pennsylvania and even though my grades arent very good, I have made it this far, and I can do things with my life that doctors never thought would be possible. I am almost tic free, thanks to my medications. And it all started with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSROOM-Specific TS Info for Teachers!!!
I love this book, which I have found invaluable in educating my son's teachers about the disorder. It is basically a compilation of information that any well read TS parent has probably found in 20 different locations, but for the novice looking for a thorough overview in one book, "Teaching The Tiger" goes a LONG way toward increasing their TS education. It gives practical advise re behavioral interventions that work, and more importantly those that DON'T. 3-0 out of 5 stars Formula approaches not best for ever changing conditions
As a parent of children with TS, I obtained this book for teachers to have a better understanding of techniques in the classroom.Consistently, I came across teachers who would apply the techniques uniformly and dismiss the "it depends" approach which is critical in dealing with TS... from the standpoint that the condition is ever changing in an individual, and it is different from one person to the next. (Too many teachers would say, "Oh I've had a TS child before"... I have *two* as well, and they and the *effective* approaches in teaching them couldn't be more different from one another.)Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars FULL OF OUTDATED & WRONG INFO -DON"T BUY!
As a parent of a child with Tourette's, I feel I must warn anyone trying to learn about TS to ABSOLUTELY NOT buy this horrifying book.It is full of completely outdated and flat out wrong information that has long since been dismissed by current clinical studies. Please skip it and go read Brad Cohen's book

4-0 out of 5 stars Editor@Tourettes-Disorder.com - Review
This book is a great book for the patient diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the secondary and tertiary level of the disorder; or a person in a personal relationship with the same patient. They will understand and relate much more throughout the pages without a "Scare Factor".There are possible more sever co-morbid conditions the Dr. amplifies in the secondary and tertiary diagnosis which are not so prevalent in a first level diagnosis if at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars Caution, a terrifying book for those new to the syndrome
This unfortunately was the first book I read on the subject of Tourette Syndrome. My child was then 4 years old and newly diagnosed with the condition, and an absolute angel, sweetheart, mild-mannered, sociable pre-schooler with tics. I needed therapy after reading this book for fear of all the horrible things that might become reality for my child, not to mention I felt so low about my family members from a genetic pool standpoint, I wondered if I'd ever be able to lift my head proudly again.Read more

This book is WONDERFUL!We are raising our 11 year old nephew who has Tourette's, along with several other things, and he really needed some help understanding Tourette's so that he could explain it to his peers. He's been picked on at school because of his tics and we wanted something that he could read and understand. This fit the bill!THANK YOU, ADAM!He's reading Adam and the Magic Marble now.He said its a little harder to read (he's a little behind in reading skills than most 11 y/o's) but its a good read.He took it to bed tonight to read more.

Thanks so much for taking the time to understand how i felt (I was only 10) about having to live with Tourette's Syndrome. Thanks even more for reviewing my book.. wow. I'm glad to see I've been able to reach people and help them. I'm 20 now, and it's been 10 years since I wrote those books, but it was a genuine feeling of accomplishment and meaning when I read your reviews. Again, thank you very much, you just made my dad/week/year..5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for even an oldster like me
The book is written for a very young audience, but when my 27 year-old son read it he cried. He could remember feeling the same way, and even doing the same things. He had never talked to anyone about it, but really openedup after reading it. We had a hard time getting a diagnosis, so it wasespecially heartfelt for me to learn that we're not alone in this bigthing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
This is by far the most useful book I have read on Tourette Syndrome, as well as one of the best books I have read on special needs in general."Tics and Tourette Syndrome" is short enough and concise enough that an overwhelmed parent can read it in one sitting.Do not be fooled by the book's length, however.Word for word, this book contains more useful information than any other book I have read; there is no filler, there are no anecdotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Momkey's
I purchased this book several years ago. Since then, I have had the opportunity to observe several other children-one 19 year old with tourette syndrome. This book is full of a varity of people with different forms of Tourette's. The chldren I have met also have different types of "twitches and tic's". This book shows that the media-or televisions shows that protray Tourette's, are totally overblown. Some people do indeed "twitch" or "vocally" give out annoying sounds. Some are very well controlled in public, but let loose at home. The book is an excellent example of different examples of Tourette's and how to become aware of what you are seeing or hearing. Anyone really interested in the subject - read this book! (:

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource For Parents
My son has Tourettes. This was the first book that I bought when he was diagnosed and I found it to be invaluable. It is a great resource for the parents of the newly diagnosed or even those who have been dealing with it for some time. The book lets you know what to expect and how to cope. A must have for anyone dealing with a special needs child with this disorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jam Packed Guide for Parents and Professionals
This is a compact little guide is packed with useful information both for parents and professionals. It is not cluttered with long narratives of people's "personal stories".While there is definitely a place for that approach, I needed a quick primer that would easily acquaint me with the full range of difficulties faced by a child with Tourette Syndrome as well as those faced by her parents. As a clinican, I needed to arm myself in a hurry with an understanding of the essential issues relevant to this population in order to manage a school crisis. It gave me everything I needed to effectively advocate for my young client and her parents.5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, enormously helpful, with great advice
My 8-year-old son has ADHD, OCD and tic disorders (though not full-blown Tourette Syndrome). This book was an enormous help for me in understanding the tic disorder and also the ADHD and OCD which often co-occur with TS and tic disorders. It is written in a very easy to read, friendly, compassionate way. There is a lot of clear advice here.TS is complex and often misunderstood. The book helps you cope with and understand many of the related problems. It teaches acceptance, dealing with friends, relatives, schools, etc.It is a very thorough book. After reading it, I felt less helpless and more empowered to deal with these issues. The book talks about the importance of acknowledging your child's frustrations and feelings, which will help him to learn to share them more directly with you.For example, saying, "I know you're trying really hard, and it's frustrating when the other students can't seem to understand that you can't stop doing certain things."This book helps you to also empower your child, and to embrace what is special about him.It says, "If you believe in your child as an individual whose Tourette syndrome is only one aspect of her total being, your child will also be more likely to see herself as someone with abilities, rather than disabilities."I strongly recommend this book.It will help. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Educational... not always offers what I want
Fowler combines personal experience and his very indepth research to make for an interesting book to learn about Tourette Syndrome. He lived a life worth telling full of improper diagnoses and decades of drug testing to cure his demons. While there are personal stories throughout, I really wanted to get to learn his life. He is a musician now... how did he survive beforehand?
2-0 out of 5 stars DID NOT MEET EXPECTATIONS...
This slender tome gives the reader a non clinical, layperson's peek into the world of those who suffer from the little understood malady known as Tourette Syndrome. The author, who himself has this disorder, speaks about the various manifestations of Tourette Syndrome and gives a brief historical overview of this malady. While informative, it fails to capture the reader, who comes away knowing a little more about the disorder, but never fully comprehends what life was like for the author who grew up with Tourette Syndrome, though tantalizing glimpses are offered. So, if one were looking for a personal memoir of a person growing up with Tourette Syndrome, this would not be that book. If one merely wants a layperson's synopsis of Tourette Syndrome, then this book may be of some value.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true inside look of a Trouetter - looking out
This book gave an indepth sense of what is going on inside of a person with tourette syndrome. It gives you a strong feel of the helplesness when your mind says one thing, and your body does something entirely on its own. My eleven year old son cries at night and begs me to make this "Tourette" thing go away - make me be normal like everyone else. This book tells it from the heart. ... Read more
