Good basic information but not really up to date for 2002
I bought this book because I am going to have LASIK surgery the end of the month at the same place that sponsors the book (TLC).With the technology changing all the time, some of the stuff in this book is a bit out of date, but pretty accurate with what is going to be done.I would recommend a revision come out within the next couple months because of the leaps and bounds the procedure has had since the book was published.Don't get me wrong...this is an excellent start to find out more about LASIK and just don't depend on the Internet for the rest of your research.

Describes the Procedure Well, Downplays the Risks
The book gives a very detailed description of the procedureitself and many details surrounding it which is useful for anyoneconsidering the surgery. Unfortunately this can't make up for the factthat it downplays the risks, dismissing stories of bad outcomes asmostly some type of "urban legend". Also the author hasworked for one of the higher priced Laser Eye chains and many of theirstaff are quoted in the book. I felt this displayed a subtle biastowards them...

If You Have Scoliosis, This Book IsA Must!
This book was more than I had ever expected. If you are a scoliosis patient or if you have a loved one or friend that is this book is a must. I got more information from it then I got from the doctors. The info in this book is from actual scoliosis patients and their families. I was able to make a list of questions for my own doctor which without the book I wouldn't have ever come up with them by myself. It is great!

Informative
I thought the book was very well written and very informative.After reading the book, I was able to ask more educated questions of my orthopedist in a language they could relate to and where I could get better answers.There are many gray areas with scoliosis, and this helped me get a little clarity on some of those issues.

You Need This Book!
I can't think of anything missing from this book. It answers every question you could think of and details, in clear and simple language, exactly what you need to know and what your experience will be like. It also fully explains the nature of scoliosis and the various surgical options, as well as some of the alternative therapies. The topics range from how to pick a surgeon, how to arrange your life prior to the surgery, what to take to the hospital with you, what exactly your hospital experience will be like, to how and when you can try for sex after the surgery. The best thing about it is that it was written not by a surgeon who performs the surgery, but by a man who actually had the surgery himself. This is what will prepare you the best for the surgery. The Ultimate Back Book
I highly recommend this book. The book starts with a detailed account of the anatomy of the spine including parts of discs, and muscles surrounding the central nervous system. Next Ms. Fine proceeds with explainations of exactly what can go wrong. I particurly think that the malfunctions and usual age groups that they happen is helpful.She goes further to arm you with the knowledge of the biases that specific types of doctors may have towards certain procedures/diagnosis. An example is that a surgeon will, most likely, want to operate thus, finding a solution to your pain. The book includes self examinations and exercises. Also there is a history of what doctors have prescribed for back pain in prior years. Finally some advice as to how to live with pain and how to better manage that pain. I think this book becomes far more important in the age that we live.
