An invaluable resource for any surgery!
This book is specifically about and for heart bypass surgery patients.However, I found it to be the most helpful book I've ever read about surgery in general, what to expect, and how to handle some of the difficulties that will probably arise, both physical and emotional.I found it after suffering through a different operation, and wished fervently that I could have had it for guidance earlier.The sub-title says it all: it really can help you prepare for a sucessful outcome of surgery. ... Know your options!
When my surgeon recommended that I get this book, I didn't even know there were anesthesia choices I had to make or that would be made for me!Not only did this book make those options clear, itshowed me that I did wantto discuss themknowledgably with the anesthesiologist, who was surprisedbut enthusiastic when I did so.This concise work is clearly writtenand well organized, so that you can not only easily find the answers toyour questions, but also determine what you want to or should be asking aswell.Brief anecdotes also give an honest 'preview' of what to expectduring a surgical experience, from the time you put on a gown until you'reout of the 'recovery room'.This familiarity factor eliminated much of theanxiety I'd expected to experience and alone was worth the price of thebook.Chapters on anesthetics and kids andchildbirth as well. Highly recommended!

Terrific book!
This is a great book for anyone who's going to have a baby. I wish it had been out before my first pregnancy. I heard all these stories about epidurals, how they're bad for babies and bad for mothers and mess upchildbirth...and they were all untrue! But, I didn't know, so my firstchildbirth was just miserable. If I had read this book before, I would haveknown better. This Dr. Hill explains things so clearly, he makes them easyto understand. What I like best is he doesn't tell you there's just one wayto do things. He tells you how things work and what they feel like so youcan make up your own mind. Now my son is getting older. THIS IS THE BEST HEALTH BOOK I'VE READ
I read this book in the public library this past week and I was fascinated by the knowledge that I learned. It is a wonderful book. I suggest that everyone read this book. It's well written and very informative.

Mostly Good Info - Super Illustrations - Worth It
The illustrations are what really make this book.Dr. Stringer (may he rest in peace) gives a tremendous amount of useful information.Unfortunately, hefails to give citations to support his statements - and makes do with a bibliography at the end of the book (who can tell what supports which without reading ALL of the sources in their entirety & if you're going to do that, why bother to read the book?). He does clearly (honestly) state that some things are based on observations in his own practice or just his personal opinion - but it's frequently hard for me to sort out what's science and what's personal opinion/experience.For instance, he has a strong opinion on birth control pills and fibroids, which appears to be contrary to much of the science -- so I wish he'd referenced that better.Feeling that he could have been dead wrong on one point, makes other information in the book suspect in my mind. This is a must read for any woman who is diagnosed with fibroids. This books lets you know there are other opitions available to you besides a hestorectomy (the option that's always presented to you). Although, I have a doctor that presented all my options to me there are some that don't. And before you make a decision to do something (like having a hestorectomy) and regret it later take another step and do some research you owe it to yourself. Remember this I was properly and throughly informed and I still did some research and I was happy to find out my doctor was right on point. Note: never be afraid to ask questions it can only help you better understand you can never know to much especially about your health.

They're back!
Five years ago I had a myomectomy that found 2 grapefruit sized and 13 golf ball sized fibroids. I've begun to have problems again and have since found have 5 new ones...great.!This book gave terrific and real-lifeexamples of what to expect.
