5-0 out of 5 stars An all inclusive, understandable book
When my mother had a heart attack a few months ago, my first impulse was to try to understand what was going on. Purchasing this book was a huge help in that matter. It guided us through all of the various tests, procedures, and surgeries she ended up needing. When we found out a valve replacement would be necessary, we were able to ask informed questions of the surgeon, having read this book.He even asked if I was a doctor!4-0 out of 5 stars Know Your Heart - It'll Help You Live Longer, Healthier !

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Complete Guide To total Hip Replacements: Before, During And After Surgery
I am scheduled to have total hip replacement, and I wanted to get my questions answered. This book was very informative and very thorough. The author went into detail with all of the information, and she even gave "check lists" at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for anyone contemplating or recovering from total hip replacement
Jennifer Frantin, a physical therapist of 16 years' experience, presents Your Complete Guide to Total Hip Replacements, a pocket-sized, in-depth guide to taking control of the medical process to ensure a successful hip replacement and adaptation. Chapters discuss how to prepare for surgery, including choosing the right doctor and hospital, and dealing with one's insurance company; exercise and recovery after the surgery; home care; outpatient physical therapy; and much more. Black-and-white photographs clearly illustrate such issues as the importance of not bending one's hip past 90 degrees during the recovery period, even when sitting up in bed, and how to turn properly when using a walker. A glossary and index round out this compact yet information-filled guide, highly recommended and a "must-have" for anyone contemplating or recovering from total hip replacement.

Editorial Review

Whether we like to admit it or not, humans are physiocentric creatures. We judge people on the basis of how they look; we get passed over for jobs or promotions if we don't project the proper glow of youth and vitality. Gaynor, a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, sees himself as the equalizer. He's been where his patients are. He's walked into parent-teacher conferences with his son and been introduced as the boy's grandfather. And, with new surgical techniques that most of us haven't yet heard of, he can level the playing field: filling in wrinkles, unbagging eyes, shoring up sagging chins, creating an athletic-looking six-pack where once there was only a beer belly.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too broad and general
I would NOT recommend this book unless you are planning to have multiple cosmetic procedures and want ONE book to cover them all. If you are looking for in depth information on one specific surgery then this is not your book. I was only interested in BA and read that information in 10 minutes or less. This book was a waste of my money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough and some great "over the counter" advice
This book is a great read for anyone considering cosmetic surgery--you get clinical advice, but down home advice as well.It takes a lot of the confusion out of a subject that can be overwhelming, and scary. It is anice writing style and easy to understand.I recommend another book, froma slightly different perspective--"Cosmetic Surgery WithoutFear" is written by a cosmetic surgery consumer advocate, and not adoctor. You get some information that many doctors may not divulge.Youare also given the critical information to look for when selecting yourdoctor and resources to make sure you are avoiding the horror stories weall fear.Get them both, you have all the perspectives covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is book that lives up to its title!
This is a book that should be read by everybody, even those that do nothave a surgery in mind. Very informative, you never get bored! Dr.Gaynor'sinsight into the world of cosmetic surgery will for sure give youanewperspective and answer all your questions ! a Must read book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative for Anyone Considering Lasik
This book is packed with answers.I feel like a mini-expert on Lasik now.I found the author's website for anyone interested:5-0 out of 5 stars The Eye Laser Miracle : The Complete Guide to Better
This book is extremely informative! It pretty much answered every question I had regarding LASIK, in a very objective and easy-to-understand manner. In fact, I was so impressed by Dr. Caster that I scheduled an initial (and free) consultation, to see if I was a candidate.Turns out I was, and after a more thorough pre-op exam, including an unanticipated trip to a retinal specialist (they saw something they wanted checked out and preferred a specialist's seal of approval), I went through with the LASIK procedure.I can't praise this book enough, for giving me helpful information that made me a better, more informed patient.I felt very much in control -- well, as much as I could be, under the circumstances; and that, I think, should be any patient's ultimate objective, regardless of the medical procedure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent description of a miraculous new medical procedure!
Dr. Caster describes in detail the LASIK procedure, a miraculous new laser eye surgery that can cure nearsightedness and astigmatism. After I read the book, I had Dr. Caster operate on my eyes, and I have now thrown away myglasses. This is 21st-century medicine delivered in the 20th century! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Primer for anyone thinking about Plastic Surgery
Town & Country Magazine selected Dr. Marfuggi's book to review out ofthe countless number of publications on the market. Dr. Marfuggi goesthrough the basics without the technical talk. Easy to read and easy tounderstand. A great start for anyone considering plastic surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Town & Country magazine recommends Dr. Marfuggi's book
Out of all the plastic surgery books on the market, Dr. Marfuggi's book isrecommended in Town & Country's March 2000 issue. The article isentitled "Pre-Op Reading List". Town & Country recommends"Plastic Surgery: What you need to know before, during and after"as a great place to begin researching any procedure. Described as aworkbook that doesn't intimidate with technical talk, it breaks downprocedures down to the basics (what's involved, length of surgery, anesthesia used, in/out patient, incisions/scarring) before tackling suchrisks and realities as pain and downtime.3-0 out of 5 stars Plastic Surgery 101 For The Patient From The Doctors Point
I believe an informed patient or consumer is the most satisfied one. Dr. Marfuggi was very right to share his views from a position as a surgeon who treats canditates for surgery by informing them of all basic procedures, what they involve, and in his own way tries to give you a good idea of whatthe experiance can be like, when educated as well as prepared. This bookhowever falls short in the human area of cosmetic and plastic surgey whenit comes down to the emotion, the individuality and the every person isdifferent aspect. This to me is so important for I am pursuing surgery andI found books written by people who have actually gone through thesearching, the consults, and the procedures. I know now from these otherbooks this is such a personal and individual experiance. Do all peoplerecover in th amount of weeks the Dr. says? In this day of HMO's andfinacing your surgery, does he address the fact that this is notonlycosting you a small fortune but you may needto be an inpatient or evenqualify for inpatient care. What about the patient who is willing and canafford to stay in the hospital for they know they need that support. Doeshe tell you that Drs. often have a list of nurses who work only on thesecases. Yes it costs, but even if you can't afford it, don't you want toknow?Perhaps it is something you can arrange at home than. Does he tell youthat office staff that treats you rudely can be a problem if you areapprehensive post -op with calling the Dr. because you feel as though youare bothering his staff? From a text point of view read this forexplantion and a primer. For real help, I suggest you look up authors whohave been on the other side of the experiance. The book falls short whenfactoring in that these personal factors arevery major for whoever isconsidering any procedure. Educate yes, by all means, but if in thepatients shoes, read their accounts also. It is you who will be going topursue the surgical experiance. The Dr.is in the house but not on thetable. Put this book as a reference guide in basics. Read however authorswho have been there...had that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but one piece of important info omitted
Great book, except:
4-0 out of 5 stars good practicaltips for living with an RSI
I disagree with the reviews below, I thought this is a fine book, a good complement to the books "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" by Damany and " Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Other Repetitive Strain Injuries" by Sharon Butler. It's true the latter two have much more on specific exercises to help get you better and I liked the medical information in Damany. However they don't have a lot of practical information on how to cope with your life during the healing process when you can't do a lot of the things you normally do in your daily life. This book fills that gap. It's got lots of practical suggestions of how to do things when you're injured. It's more of broader focus than the other books on the overall changes you need to make beyond the specific exercise program. I would recommed someone with an RSI get all three books as the information is complementary.

2-0 out of 5 stars very dystopic with little concrete information
This is an amazingly dystopic book, absolutely full of horror stories and unhappy endings. There's a chapter on how to have a sex life despite RSI, how to sue for loss of a career, the testimonial of a man who was paralysed from the waist down but found RSI more disabling etc - but nothing concrete about what RSI actually. OK, so now I know that if I have tendonitis I'm more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome and the rest of them but this book doesn't give me information on what tendonitis (or the others) actually is or how to make much of a change. There are quick mentions of various treatments but there is no discussion of their relative merits. The author tells us about her own exercise program (30-40 minutes a morning with weights and 1 1/2 hours of ballet four times a week plus walking and stretching) but there are no specific exercises that can help you avoid recurrance or assist in healing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recent Patient
I am quite thankful for this book and its many valuable tips.I recently had liposuction and feel that had I not reviewed some of the information for recovery, I might have been in greater discomfort. You don't really understand what it will be like until you become a patient, but I can tellthat the author is a patient as she is extremely thorough with herrealistic and helpful explanations.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for anyone who is considering cosmetic surgery
With all of the hype about cosmetic surgery I have found it very difficult to get impartial and informative assistance on selecting a physician who best meets my needs.I had also never considered the importance ofselecting an accredited surgical facility-but as I researched the horrorstories and read the book, I realized this decision can be as important asselecting the right physician. The detailed information on what to expectbefore and after surgery was very helpful.A must read if you areconsidering cosmetic surgery! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but too much nutrition, exercise info.
While this book is helpful as a basic tool for understanding what you'll go through with liposuction, and which areas can be done, it spends too much time on nutrition and exercises. These are things that the surgeon will go over with the patient, and, for me, it was a detour from the real reason I bought the book: to find out more about which areas can be done, what recovery will be like, etc. I didn't really learn anything new from this book, but if you want the basics, it's not bad... ...
