I found Going Under filled with useful information that helped me get through my recent hernia surgery. Sometimes you get skeptical about relaxation techniques, but the ones given here really worked for me. I also like the tone of the book. It is respectful yet informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for all women
I came across this book after reading the authors' first book about Csection, which I found really helpful. I haven't had a hysterectomy but I needed some minor surgery and this book really explained the procedure well and what to expect afterwards. It also explained why I had the symptoms I did. My Mom also read it and though she's already had a hysterectomy found a lot of things she hadn't known (especially about the menopause afterwards) The book doesn't push you into surgeries but gives lots of information and a guide for making up your own mind.Queenie

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains what to expect and how to make the recovery easier
In Do You Really Need Surgery?: A Sensible Guide To Hysterectomy And Other Procedures For Women, Michele Moore (a family physician specializing in women's health) and Caroline de Costa (a gynecologist and obstetrician, and a mother of seven who has herself undergone a hysterectomy) combine their more than fifty years of experience to provide accurate and clear information to the reader about the anatomy, physiology, and common gynecological ailments of women. They deftly and accessibly cover diagnosis, alternative surgery, and full details about medical procedure of hysterectomy surgery. Do You Really Need Surgery? also takes the reader through the post-operative phase, explains what to expect and how to make the recovery easier, as well as how to take care after the surgery to insure against post-operative complications. Critically important and very highly recommended reading for anyone contemplating such surgery, Do You Really Need Surgery? also informatively addresses possible non-surgical options.
5-0 out of 5 stars terrific information for any woman with 'women's problems'
I was lucky enough to get hold of a review copy of this book while going through the investigations and decision-making for my upcoming hysterectomy. This book covers everything I needed to know, without pushing the reader too much in any one direction. It's really good on the details and risks of hysterectomy with the laparoscope, this is information I couldn't find in any other book. As a result I now feel confident about having this procedure. I'll have the book with me as I go through the process, it has a lot of information about what happens in the weeks after hysterectomy and how to get back to better health quicker.Five stars to these sympathetic women ffor producing this sensible guide. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It Can Change Your Life
If you're looking for an authoritative review of weight loss surgery, including how it could actually save your life, this is the book for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very understandable, comprehensive, yet succinct
I am the father of a highly overweight adolescent girl, whose furure may include weight loss surgery (WLS). This book explained the many issues involved not only about the surgery itself, but, importantly, about many basic concepts about obesity (including very useful definitions and formulas about what constitutes obesity). The book also clearly discussed the critically important subject of the co-morbid conditions (diabetes II, high blood pressure, e.g.)that can be caused by obesity. The danger of obesity, as mainifested by the presence of these co-morbid conditions, was dramatically described. These issues, as well as the more technical description of the various types of WLS surgeries, was set forth in a manner that was easily understood by this lay person. I felt as if I was involved with a personal consultation with the physician/author, where the surgery was described, and the potential risks and side effects, and benefits, were being explained to me in a very understandable way. The book also contains an ending chapter of Frequently Asked Questions which provided an excellent review of the entire book's contents, and could serve as a condensed version of the book should a reader just wish to address a certain issue, and have the answers presented quickly and directly. The book greatly advanced my understanding of the meaning and problems of obesity, and placed me (and ultimately my daughter)in a substantially more enlightened and informed position to make a potential decision about whether or not my daughter should undergo this surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST WLS Book!!
I have read this book several times and it is the only book on this subject that you will need.I have read the others but this book has EVERYTHING you will need to know INCLUDING how to select a surgeon, and even how to get approval for your surgery.A MUST HAVE ITEM IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING WLS. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still Valuable Information
This book was the only one of its kind for a long time. In fact, I found it years after my father's liver transplant, and found it helpful even "after the fact."
5-0 out of 5 stars A True Sourcebook for Information on Transplants
There is such a scarce amount of information for families of transplant recipients. In fact, this is the only book on the subject at my local library.I found it extremely helpful and informative for many of the technical questions I had about what my father went through and would continue to endure.(He had a liver transplant 7 years ago.)I wish I had found it years ago!Thank you Robert Finn!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo
As a clinical social worker that works with patients facing the possibility of organ transplantation, I picked up this book with the hope that it would be something I could recommend to patients. It did not disappoint me!Very well written and comprehensive, it gives a huge amount of information in an easy to understand format. It is also a very interesting read - I had a hard time putting it down!It is a great starting point for people that are just beginning to learn about transplant.I will be strongly recommending it to all patients and families that I meet as part of the pre-transplant evaluation process. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Up-To-Date Information on Plastic Surgery
This is an excellent, well-researched book on plastic surgery. The fact that the author is not a plastic surgeon is a big plus. She covers the material thoroughly (including microsurgery) and objectively. There is newinformation not available in the other books on cosmetic/plastic surgery. She's experienced cosmetic surgery and explains what it's like from apatient's viewpoint. But this isn't just another book about a patient'sexperience. There is thorough information in this book and it is wellarranged and very accessible. Her coverage of the subject is very thorough.I definitely recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If Treatment Option is Radiation
This is the fourth book I've read on prostate cancer and easily the most upbeat and practical for a prostate cancer victim who has the option of choosing radiation treatment, specifically 3D Conformal Radiation. Dr. Priest is an excellent writer who takes you through the day to day process of getting 3D conformal radiation treatment, which is a two month process. What he describes is the reality of going to the hospital every single day for two months and dealing with the minor episodes that occur. Although the process is not without its problems, they are far less than a typical surgery patient goes through. As Dr. Priest explains, doctors know better than anybody all of the problems that can occur with any major surgery - and prostate cancer surgery is major with the potential for some serious side affects. Radiation therapy is not a walk in the park but it is far less threatening than surgery. The day to day diary approach Dr. Priest takes makes for some very easy reading. The processes that he describes, including the drinking to of water before each and every treatment are exactly what I was told my my radiation oncologist. I haven't started my treatments yet, but this book did a lot to ease my fears. Intertwined in the diary are sidebars covering some of the prostate cancer technical issues which seem to be up-to-date. If you are considering radiation treatment using 3d conformal radiation, this book is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to deal with a serious disease
This excellent book is a personal story about prostate cancer contracted by the author and how he dealt with it.He also very nicely summarizes his extensive research on the disease and how to treat it.However, it is much more than a book aboout prostate cancer. It is a template for how to deal with any serious disease.Dr. Priest gives us a picture of the emotional turmoil surrounding being diagnosed with cancer, how some of the shortcomings of the medical establishment add to the turmoil, and how to navigate through the maze with the help of family and friends.Although the subject is cancer, the author has writtten a positive and encouraging account of how to deal with it.I highly recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars For families and friends of brain trauma patients
This book is a must have for patients and families of brain trauma. It clearly states symptoms and stages of the trauma. It tells you what to expect. It isn't a medical description but a patient to patient description in terms that anyone can comprehend. It is one excellent book.Thank you Gail Denton for writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recovery begins with understanding
This book is a guide to sanity for those who have experienced mild brain injury, as I have. In the fall of 2000, I suffered an accidental fall and spent the following 15 months in a struggle to recover my 'real self". With the aid of this book, I am now fully functional again and able to cope with the minor relapses. I strongly recommend this book to those who suffer, their friends and caregivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brainlash reviewed by a head injury patient.
I have read a number of books on the subject as I am a person who has a brain Injury. This book, more than any other I have read, has been extremely helpful to me. First of all because it explains so well what happens to the sufferer, both physiologically as well as emotionally. The book also gives lots of possitive suggestions for coping as well as for healing.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This is one of the books I've read as I've considered and studied weight loss surgery.I found this book very informative and especially liked the discussions of the history of this surgery. The text is easy to read (i.e. you don't have to be a doctor to understand it).

3-0 out of 5 stars Does have interesting perspectives and information
Well, I must say that I was a bit surprised by the author's tone in the first few chapters.Although the book is about (and is even titled) "the answer for the dangerously overweight", the author seemed a bit harsh against the obese and, although showing this option, also is able to chastize many readers.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for researching the surgery option.
I read this book with the hope of answering numerous questions I have had about the various surgical procedures available for treating obesity.I found most of the answers I wanted.I also created a whole new list ofquestions because the author does a good job of discussing the topic.Ashe did this I found questions about things I hadn't even thought of.Heleft me wanting to know more. I am very glad I read the book and wouldrecommend it highly to anyone who is seriously considering surgical optionsto treat obesity.I was glad to have this resource available withinformation coming directly from a practicing physician.I plan to, ofcourse, look at the other side of things again too, so I can weigh thebenefits and consequences. The book is also written fairly plainly so thateveryone can understand. Some of the diagrams and things should have maybebeen compared to "normal" people so we could differentiate whatneeded to change, etc. But, for the most part, the book was excellent! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Detail for Learning
Much of the book is dedicated to getting around on crutches.Under "Fitting of Crutches" Pryor states "All too frequently crutches are fitted improperly - generally too long - even by trained personnel."This is exactly what happened to me.I was nearly falling off the crutches every "swing-through" step.I fitted the crutches per instructions.By the next day I had the swing-through step down.By the next week I was successfully practising "non-weight bearing" stair climbing. This made a huge difference to me as my bedroom is on the second floor and the kitchen and living room are on the bottom floor. The detail of the book is wonderful for doing things the first (few) times.Keep re-reading.All that detail makes perfect sense when you are learning. Some of the hints are counter-intuitive and this saves you the trouble of doing it wrong or getting discouraged and giving up.I really wish the hospital had given me this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended -Been there and back, this book helps!
I agree, every orthopaedic patient should leave the hospital with this book! My only wish is that I'd had it sooner after discharge.Helps with topics other titles just don't cover, like flying while disabled, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Information
Like some of the others here, I came across this book because I work for a website that contains information about cosmetic surgery.I research articles and books for the website Breast Implants USA, and Dr. Engler's book has helped my understanding of many procedures and products. He speaks in a clear, concise way which is understandable by the lay person -- which is great because, if you've ever researched this stuff, you know how difficult it can be to understand some of the medical terminology.Engler takes the extra effort to make all the information real, interesting and accessible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and thorough
As someone who operates a popular and very informative breast implant web site and forum...I cannot recommend this book enough.Dr. Engler covers everything, including information on other plastic surgery techniques, such as liposuction, breast lifts, breast reduction, and tummy tucks. The complete history of breast implants is covered, as well as the types of implants available (saline and silicone), the silicone controversy, shapes of various implants, placement of the implants, possible risks and complications, as well as before and after photos. This book really has everything. You will learn what to expect at your consultation, to anesthesia, to what the neighbors will say.5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, yet thorough. BRAVO!
I have run a popular plastic surgery resource website, IMPLANTFORUM.COM, for over 4 years and I cant think of a thing Dr. Engler neglected to mention in this book, BodySculpture! Dr. Engler covers everything. From what to expect before, during & after surgery to the emotional aspect of undergoing plastic surgery. Each procedure (breast augmentation, breast reduction, liposuction and tummy tucks) is explained thoroughly, yet in easy to understand laymans terms. He details what youll get from a consult and all your options, to how to prepare for surgery and what transpires during surgery. He lists the risks of each surgery and what to expect when recovering and he does not sugar coat! Bravo!Read more
