5-0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt
I finally had the chance to read this book, which has been sitting on my night table for a while. Some books are easily forgettable - sometimes you can't even remember if you've read it or not. That is not the case with this beautifully written memoir - it has evoked feelings in me that remain strong even though a few weeks have passed. My father had an aortic valve replacement last year, and I've had my own episodes of arrhythmia and tachycardia, so I felt a real connection with both the science and emotion regarding the heart. The personal recollections are both honest and real, and kept me wanting more. It's such a delight to find a writer who is courageous enough to let the readers in for a glimpse into his personal relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science and Society
I am a very enthusiastic reader of medical memoirists such as Nuland, Solomon, and Seltzer, and after reading A Man After His Own Heart I'd place Siebert immediately in the same company, and a step better for the exceptional writing. These authors act as literary mediators between the general readership and science and health, where cultural myths and the obscurity of technical information cloud essential understanding of our bodies and ourselves, and ultimately of our own mortality, and perhaps worse, how our genetics may be used to marginalize us and our families. With all the personal pain and difficulty, struggling with the death of a father, and perhaps a genetic death sentence, Siebert, as a journalist, connects in a Whitmanesque way with people all over America suffering from heart disease, in its variants.Reading Siebert's book put me in mind of how critical it is to find a link between science and society, and how desperately we need such gifted authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart and Soul
Never have scientific and personal oddysseys been so deftly woven into whole cloth.Charles Siebert has allowed us to share a personal journey motivated by emotion but marked by intellectual discovery.Apparently, Mr. Seibert is a poet as well as a writer of prose, and his lyricism transforms material that might otherwise be drily academic into the stuff of poetry. And what better subject than the heart? The center, presumably, of our emotional life as well as the focus of complex science and medicine. All of this takes place in this book within the vehicle of a heart transplant operation, which provides a narrative movement that keeps the reader turning the pages. On the path of this riveting account of the writer's personal experience with a heart transplant team, there are surreal landscapes humanized by the characters embodying the scientific and medical details as well as personal landscapes, including Mr. Siebert's confrontations and reconciliations with his own heart and his father's failing heart, all vivified by factual understanding. The special effects in this book are real, making the reader see that knowledge is the true landscape of the imagination. Science has long been seen as the enemy of the spirit;here is one writer who marries the two with astounding results.Artificial hearts, transplanted hearts, broken hearts, and loving hearts:anyone with a heart will love this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great balanced guide
I picked this book up at the library and am considering buying a copy, even though my surgery is scheduled for just a week from now.It is a great guide to what will happen, what questions to ask, how to prepare, etc., etc., etc.I'm on my second reading now and will probably read it again.Definitely worth the $10 or so price tag in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, fairly up-to-date, unbiased.
Less biased than some books on the subject.Discusses hysterectomies and less-drastic alternative treatments, including the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of each.Discusses different methods of hysterectomy -- vaginal, abdominal, and laproscopic, and includes the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of each method. Some hysterectomy books do not mention the newer all-laproscopic method of hysterectomy, but this gives it good coverage. Also pros and cons of what to include in the hysterectomy, especially ovaries which have a major impact. Includes an in-depth discussion of what to expect after hysterectomy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book
I found this book clear, concise and very helpful. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that once again, despite it's title, it includes alternatives to hysterectomy. For those of us who have already made the decision out of necessity, I find that annoying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The big picture
I had never heard of these cosmetic procedures except for botox. I never considered any kind of plastic surgery or cosmetic procedure because I've seen those women with their stretched-looking smiles after face lifts. I knew a few people who have had botox and I thought they were nuts. This book is clear and understandable and separates fact from fiction with no nonsense. Starting today I'm saving my pennies!

5-0 out of 5 stars I finally did it!
I always wanted to try something to improve my appearance, but I never felt I had enough information on botox, or chemical peels or micro demabrasion, etc. to actually do anything. I had no idea which one would be right for me, and I didn't have a lot of time to do research. This book solved my problem by putting all the info I wanted into one very easy to read book with amazing pictures. The detailed descriptions of the procedures made me confident I really was ready to do something. Now, thanks to this book, I've had microdemabrasion, and it was just as easy as they said. I'm thinking of lip augmentation next. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving his or her appearance and wants to be informed quickly by experts who really know what they are talking about and can make you understand too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I found this book to be very helpful, especially if you are wanting to have some of these procedures done yourself. I especially liked the sections on lip augmentation--for example, I didn'tknow their were choices on temporary vs permanent filler materials. An around a good book. Easy to understand. Great before and after pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on chiropractic philosophy
This book is excellent because it tells why adjustments are given--to correct subluxations. It talks about innate and so forth. However, sometimes it's a little scary how some members of the chiro profession worship B.J. and D.D. Palmer.Forms of adjustments have been around for thousands of years from the Romans, Greeks, Chinese.Yes, I know, they were not specific, they did manipulations.Anyway, chiropractic works, it has been working for thousands of years in one form or another. However, it works greater now because now it is specific--targeted to removing nerve interference and correcting the subluxation.I also, highly recommend.5-0 out of 5 stars Chiropractic First of Portland, OR recommends this book.
Here at Chiropractic First, LLC in Portland, OR we love this book. We encourage our patients to read it and to increase their health care knowledge about Chiropractic. This book accurate explains Chiropractic in an easy to understand model. It stays true to the nature of Chiropractic as is was first designed, it's philosophy, art and science. We love Chiropractic First. Even though we did not write this book we wish we had. Call or visit us if you have questions about Chiropractic at c1pdx.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars For open minded people
If you're locked in the "medical model" of treating sickness and disease, you probably have no interest in chiropractic or any other "alternative" health care system. So, this book won't be for you. But if you are looking for a better way to approach health and wellness and want an easy-to-read introduction to chiropractic, this book is excellent.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book not designed for senior vision
The information and exercises in this book are good...BUT...certainly most of us with osteoporosis are past 60, as I am, and this book is fairly small at 5 1/2 x 8 inches. We need to have the print and illustrations larger, darker, and easier for us seniors to see.My husband agrees with me, and he also found the smaller and lighter print difficult to see and read. That fact didn't seem to be taken into consideration with the creation and publication of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally a life saver!
After being in a car accident, dealing with fractured vertebrae and completing all the required bed rest, I was searching for something that would help me with the healing process.Being secure that I would not cause further injury to my spine by using the book as a guide and support, I began VERY slowly to try Sara Meek's program.I can only say that this book was my life saver. At the beginning I could only partially complete the most basic exercise, but I was determined to succeed. With the help of this program, both the exercises and the sense that I was getting better, I am now able to resume most daily activities and needless to say, my back has gotten straighter!Thank you Ms. Meeks.I hope you see this review.I have been wanting to thank you so much.I don't know how I would have made any progress without your help.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
This is a very good book for people who want to strengthen their backs, especially the upper back, and improve posture. The exercises (one to a page) are clearly explained, but not with too much explanation so you get lost, and the author tells how each exercise helps you. There are simple little drawings of people to show how to do each exercise. The exercises are not difficult, and you do not need to do dozens of repetitions. The book is a good size, not too big, and lays open flat.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Achievement for People & Health Care
Just holding this magnificent book is a thrill. It's 800 pages seem like a caress rather than a task as the book's preface writer, Dr. Bernie Seigel, states: " this book is for everyone".The McClanahan's have been working on this challenge for over a decade! It is woven like the finest oriental silk rug as each thread comes from life itself and the aesthetics of its design and substance instill the same emotional and intellectual reaction that a great hand made rug has on a prospective buyer. So much knowledge and wisdom are part of this great weaving that I found myself hungry to read sections apart from any given particular interest area simply by virtue of the sweep and grasp of the amazing brother and sister writing team's power. We all experience a terrible deep seated apprehension of our culture's medical care system for it is grounded in the most barbarous preoccupation with profit, innimicalto genuine quality health care. Thus the angst embedded in approaching being and getting well, especially when we are assaulted by illness or disease, results in a pain often worse than the reality of our medical/healthproblem.The crystal clear journey that Doctors Sandra and David take us on is so friendly, so characterized by an ancient sweetness flowing from the edict to "do no harm".Theirs is truly an interest in our understanding... not being victimized by the fear of the unknown, the arrogant, the subjugating norm that is so part of our medical service system and culture inAmerica. This book makes a major contribution to empowering all of us as we expose ourselves to the danger of dependence in that speciality of medicine where hybris is at its most menacing.5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every patient and physician
In this exhaustive guide through the oft confusing and terrifying land of illness and it's many treatment options, the Doctors Maclanahan cover the topic from head to foot, mountain top to waterfront. As a surgical educator I found the descriptions of the mechanism of disease clear and concise. The treatment options are equally instructive and should be easily understood by the majority of the readers. For the patient, this is an essential reference for sorting out their symptoms before heading off to theclinic. Arriving at the doctor's office better informed they will be better able to retain the all too often confusing explanations and complicated care plans. In the strained environment of modern health care, these critical discussions are more likely to be monologues dished out in the time pressured, intimidating environment of the office to a stunned patient unable to absorb their meaning.5-0 out of 5 stars Every family should own this book!
Dr.s McLanahan have made a unique and extraordinarily valuable contribution to health care. Truly this is a resource, not only for making wise choices when faced with the possiblity of a surgical procedure, but for also maintaining and improving your and your family's health. Integrative medicine (combining the best of conventional Western medicine with the best of alternative/complementary medicine) is rapidly becoming mainstream. Dr. Sandra McLanahan has been a pioneer in alternative/complementary medicine for over 25 years, and her brother is an outstanding surgeon with impeccable training and credentials. Both of them are very clear and down to earth writers, and their combined effort is very readable for people without medical training. Because of my own interest in integrative medicine, I've read most of this book. Because of its size and scope, however, this is probably not something most people will want to do. Used as a reference text, reading areas of personal interest because of personal or family medical issues will be of great interest to all people who care about their health. Having it available as a reference text when worrisome symptoms arise, or new medical diagnoses are made will provide all medical consumers with a much greater wealth of options than they are likely to receive from their medical practitioner. The information is well researched, documented, and credible, and can go a long way toward educating medical professional who have not yet taken the plunge into the huge and often bewildering area of alternative and complementary medicine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Misinformed Consent: Women's Stories About Unnecessary Hyste
I want to congratulate Lise Cloutier Steele, and Mary Anne Wyatt, for this excellent book on the devastating effects of a hysterectomy. Incredibly, the vast majority of women who have a hysterectomy do not receive adequate information about the harmful side effects of their operation before their surgery. The womens stories represent the tip of an iceberg that reveals the chilling effects these surgical procedures have had on the lives of so many women: one in three women over the age of sixty-five in Canada have had a hysterectomy. It is difficult to comprehend the thinking within the medical community that ignores the scientific literature which speaks of the side effects and is responsible for the loss of so many vibrant, intelligent, and powerful women to our society. These are other excellent resources: http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/show_hysterectomy.html and the HERS Foundation in the U.S.5-0 out of 5 stars DorothyWelsh Review
I thank Lise Cloutier for writing misinformed consent book. Many of us women have been hysterectomized and we had no idea of the facts involved, simply because doctors do not tell the facts. I had a hysterectomy several years ago at age 21 at the advise of my doctors.I find misinformed consent to be specially informative for those facing hysterectomy, and informative for the rest of us as well because it indicates many of the side effect of a hysterectomy, which many are suffering with, but are not aware of the source of their problems.I do believe misinformed consent will help many women.Again, thank you Lise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
I work in a medical library and am scheduled for my gastric bypass soon.I have done tons of research of both consumer information and clinical information.I found this book to be very honest and to be very much in line with the program at our hospital.
2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Information
I was extremely disappointed in this book.I have done hours of research on all types of Bariatric surgery and this book is one of the least informative.Gastric Bypass is hown as the magic answer.Easy, simple, and the only way.In reality this is far from the truth.Gastric Bypass is a huge decision for a person to make, and one that should not be made unless the patient is adequately informed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completly useless
I purchsed this and a few other books on cosmetic surgery as I am considering tummy tuck.
1-0 out of 5 stars The 'Cliff Notes'version of a Plastic Surgery guide-useless
I'm considering plastic surgery and ordered 3 books to research it.This book, at [$$], was a total waste of money.I guess thats one of the problems buying a book online-you can't page thru it and see how material is presented.Had I been at abookstore, this book would have quickly gone back on the shelf.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
This book provides a frank, and eye opening discussion of popular cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures.Definitely worth the effort to read if only "thinking" about undergoing a facial make over.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!
This book really summarizes and clarifies the process of undergoing facial plastic surgery in very plain terms. It is an excellent resource for my patients who are looking into facial cosmetic procedures. It not only describes what the procedures are, but explains why certian patients are better canidates for particular procedures, as well as what types of physicians should be doing them. I have purchased numerous copies of this book for my office, and reccommend it on a daily basis.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST if you are considering surgery!!!
Whether you want to find out what facial treatments work in your 30's, or are 60 and considering a total facelift, this is the read you need.Dr. Jacono breaks it down to a level that is truly easy and fun to understand.I have been considering getting my upper eyelids done, but it seems that I would get my desired result from an endoscopic browlift.Reading this book has certainly been an "eye-opening" experience. I will definitely recommend it to anyone interested in improving their appearance whether from injectibles (Botox, Restylane) or surgery.I just love the "pearls of wisdom" sections throughout the book.Great read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book
I must say that I do agree with "a reader from California's" review in that some of what Dr. Cutler had to say scared me because I bought the book right after my surgery and everything was already taken out.I couldn't go back and change that. As I began reading the book I became anxious about what might happen to me now that I have had this surgery, but as I read, I realized what she was doing with this book.So many women have had hysterectomies in the United States when there might have been better alternatives.Dr. Cutler is trying to make women understand that it is a very serious thing that you do to your body when you have this operation. She addresses HRT therapy and diet, exercise and other areas that can help if a hysterectomy is needed. This is really a very comprehensive and informative book and I intend to keep if as a reference book for the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required -If Slightly Outdated - Pre-Op Reading
This book should be handed out by OB/Gyn's to all their patients considering hysterectomy. It explains in detail what all the fuss is about, and doesn't pull any punches when relaying to the reader exactly what to expect from the procedure, before during and after. Cutler's advice on self-care is invaluable, and this book has become standard reading for women considering the procedure.1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Title is Misleading!!!
I bought this book PREVENTING, PREPARING FOR AND MAXIMIZING HEALTH AFTER HYSTERECTOMYseven days before my scheduled hysterectomy.I already knew my hysterectomy and ovaries/fallopian tube removal were necessary. In purchasing this book, I was looking for some positive ways to deal with emotions before the operation; additionally, I was looking for what to expect immediately after surgery and ways to reduce post-surgery trauma.I also was looking for concrete ways to help myself recover from this surgery.Unfortunately, what I found in this book was FEAR---yes, this book's contents led me to doubt my physician and myself. I felt the author was very biased against hysterectomy.I would not have purchased this book if I had known the author was basically anti-hysterectomy.I found the book extremely unsettling and do not recommend it to any one. ...
