5-0 out of 5 stars GRATEFUL EX-PATIENT OF DR.HUFNAGEL
In November of 1997 I was hospitalized for a week with abdominal pain. Hospital tests showed a heterogeneous mass on my left side.Seven doctorsfrom the gynecological group I had always gone to in Mineola, NY, decidedexploratory surgery was needed and also most likely a hysterectomy;IREFUSED!I walked out of the hospital in pain, at the threat of death andwith surgery scheduled for the next day!I had the courage to walk out - Ihad Dr. Hufnagel's book inside the drawer of my night table at the hospitaland had been in contact with her that week!At 34 years old I wanted tokeep ALL MY ORGANS and keeping the option of having children!5-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts
This book made a lot of sense to me and my wife as we have tried to negotiate the maze about hysterectomies. It seems that many AMA license doctors are quick to take insurance money and make snap decisions that arenot supported by the findings of the diagnostic tools we paid for.1-0 out of 5 stars Hufnagel's Following "Review" Reveals Her Sensibility
The following "review" by Hufnagel (the author) demonstrates her poor clarity of thought, unprofessionalism, and apparent inability to dicipher the purpose of this customer-review service. This is Hufnagel'sthought process unedited and without the guidance of a co-author.Nonsensical. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENCE
FOR ANYONE CONTEMPLATING A FACE LIFT..THIS BOOK IS INVALUABLE.
1-0 out of 5 stars OK, BUT THERE ARE MUCH BETTER BOOKS
I was disappointed by this book. There are much better books available.... "The Hollywood Facelift" or "The Youth Corridor" or "Nips and Tucks" are all much better than thisbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, straightforward and "right on the money" !
I am offering my review "after" having cosmetic surgery. Reading Helen's book helped me interview 5 doctors prior to making my cosmetic surgery decision. Having never considered cosmetic surgery, I would nothave known the best questions to ask, what to look for in a doctor, hisnurses, his education, training, office etc. had it not been for Helen'sbook! Helen's book offers the most realistic before, during and afterinformation...including pictures!By applying her advice, I selected asurgeon and had surgery that I am unbelievably happy with!I achieved whatI wanted and more...and continue to get compliments regularly on how greatI look...but no one can quite figure out what is different...which isexactly what I wanted!I have had several friends select my plasticsurgeon and schedule surgery after seeing my results and reading Helen'sbook! The most ironic part of all...is that I gave the book to my plasticsurgeon! And now he gives it to patients and recommends it!If you'rethinking of plastic surgery...of any kind...reading this book first is aMUST! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best most comprehensive guide to medical tourism!
Jeff Schult's new book Beauty from Afar is the best most comprehensive guide book on medical tourism I've ever seen. I love the layout of the book. Very easy to read, and to find information. Mr. Schult has a wonderful way of writing that holds your interest while offering invaluable information about medical tourism. He's not biased toward or against one country or doctor over another. He takes a neutral position and simply shares the knowledge he has garnered over several years of intense research. I've recommended this book to all my friends and family members, particularly the ones who I happen to know, are seriously considering going out of the United States for plastic surgery or dental work. I give this book BOTH of my thumbs way way up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and informative
I was pleased to read "Beauty from Afar". I was at a conference where the author spoke before the book came out and I was eagerly waiting for it. I have been to Brazil twice for plastic surgery and think the book has a lot of good information for those who are considering surgery out of the country. Medical tourism will keep being more popular as people realize that we are not the only country in the world to provide excellent medical care, and that the only way to afford what you need to have done may be to go abroad. Jeff Shult's book tells you what to look for, what to watch out for, and how to choose where to go. He gives a lot of information from people he's personally talked to or visited, so you can trust the information. Some books and articles on the subject are just rehashing what someone found on the Internet. This book actually gives you REAl information from someone who's been there (Costa Rica for dentistry). I highly recommend it as the best one out there of its type.

4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for anyone waiting for NHS Treatment!!!
If you, or anyone in your family is stuck waiting on the NHS for surgery then I can highly recommend this book to you. It covers absolutely everything you need to know about getting medical treatment abroad fast and without breaking the bank. It is also one of those rare medical books that you can actually read cover to cover - this isn't just a reference book. If you are like me then you probably know several people who have managed to contract MRSA whilst in an NHS Hospital for something quite routine. I'd sooner avoid that at all costs. Any alternative to super long NHS Queues and high cost private healthcare also has to be a winner. If you can get better treatment, throw in a holiday and a tan and STILL come back with change then you can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I absolutely loved Darrell Stoddard's book.He makes complex concepts about Chinesemedicine accessible to the layman. He also has some interesting theories re: the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Absolutely worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain free for sure....
I bought Darrell Stoddard's book "Pain Free for Life" for the same reason that I bought Hulda Regehr Clark's book "The Cure for all Diseases", because I thought that the title was bold and fairly presumptuous. Because of this, it piqued my curiosity and I wanted to see if it could deliver on its seemingly boisterous title. I was pleasantly surprised by the contents and found myself unable to put the book down until I'd read the whole thing. I then went right to the computer and looked up the author's web site (...) and proceeded to go through that quite thoroughly. The web site had little more to offer than the book, other than a lot of fairly impressive testimonials from quite a few Doctors (some very famous ones)and other healthcare professionals and the like... The web site is a fairly rudimentary one, but easily navigable. The book is a good and interesting read and fairly well written for a first try. It has a lot of very interesting information and science-backed theories regarding the origins of pain and disease and suggested methods of dealing with same.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pain Free For Life
I have just finished reading "Pain Free For Life" and was thrilled with the book!I couldn't put it down.I was captivated about the way many of today's diseases, pain, and other ailments were described and how we can prevent them and heal them.Dr. Stoddard wrote in a down-to-earth manner making the information very understandable and most useful.Pain has never been described like this before and it made total sense.I am trying to take more control of my health and "Pain Free For Life" was a wonderful, easy, educational experience.Pain Free For Life gave many every-day examples about how we can alter our habits in such little ways that make BIG differences to ease or delete pain and disease from our lives - common pain and common diseases. This is not brain surgery-type reading. This is real life reading.I highly recommend it.I even got my 72-year old mother to read it and take action.THAT speaks volumes! When you read this book and implement just a few of the very sound concepts that are based on published medical literature, you will feel a positive difference in your life!I have to say that this is one of the best health books that I've ever read.It will be a staple that I'll refer to and share the information for many years to come. ... Do not buy this book, it is basically just a depressive book.By Dr. Uppgaard's book instead, this dentist is a pessimistic dentist so stay away from this book and his "knowledge".

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Fascinating
I have a stack of books on this subject, but this is my favorite. Reads less like a medical journal, and more like a novel, while still including all the important information you will need if you're preparing to take the plunge yourself. I found the background on plastic surgery fascinating. This book is very well researched, and wonderfully written. If you enjoy good writing and are looking for a book that's more than surgery descriptions and pictures, this is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book by an Outstanding Writer
As a board certified plastic surgeon, and author of my own book about cosmetic plastic surgery, one might assume that I would write an unfavorable and possibly harsh review of a book written in my area ofexpertise by one who is not a plastic surgeon. However, that is far fromthe case. This book is an outstanding guide, written in an insightful andentertaining style - so much so that I recommend it to my own patients!Further, Joyce is an accomplished and experienced writer who knows hertopic well and presents it objectively. Congratulations on a book welldone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lift
Of all the books I have read so far, Joan's "Lift" is one of my favorites. She gives that personal touch to the surgery by describing without glory the tedious days and weeks of after care. When I decide to take the plunge, I will no doubt reread this personal and informingbook.Believe it or not, I emailed Joan to tell her how much I liked herbook, and she emailed me back with encouragement the next day. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for any woman
A few years ago, I discovered that I had a prolapsed uterus. My usual inclination is to try to find natural therapies or remedies that will support my body and restore health, resorting to medical solutions as a last resort. When I tried to get information on this subject, it was next to impossible. When prolapse is mentioned in a woman's health book, the information is scant, and usually suggests Kegel exercises (which were discouragingly useless for me) or surgical intervention.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I only read part of this book, the part on the procedure I am interested in (tummy tuck). It was useful info that was not sugar coated about the hard parts, etc. of the surgery. Some of the words are a little vulgar and I'm not really into that, but it's a small detail. At least the ladies tell it like it is. I'd suggest this book if you are considering surgery since there are not a whole lot of people out there to talk to about it depending on where you live. Plastic surgery is still considered taboo to talk about by many people. There is still a lot of negative talk about people who have plastic surgery. This book will also tell you how to handle questions about your new appearance when you don't want to tell the whole story. This book was written 6 years ago as well, so I'm sure some of the surgical procedures, etc. have been even further improved.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I love this light-hearted book. It tells you what it's really like to go through the procedures. It has great before and after photos. The author uses a very friendly style. It's not overly technical, but it's the most down to earth. I felt like I was talking to friends about what they went through. I highly recommend this book as an excellent overview of what to expect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!!!
In doing all of my reasearch for hysterectomy, this has to be the absolute worst book I've read. It is full of whining, complaining women. The title definitely needs to be changed. I think of all the stories in there I only read one truly positive one. Most of these women talk about the pain that they are in before the surgery then blame their doctors for trying to help them. My suggestion to all women about to undergo this procedure is to get a second opinion and to stay away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading before surgery and maybe after too!
Useful information and a balance of opinions. This book contains more than women's emotional reactions to hysterectomy.Useful information about various methods of hysterectomy, including little-publicized side effects and risks, is contained in the stories. To get the full picture, you need to read all the stories. This book helped me come up with a list of questions for the doctor, and helped me decide on which type of hysterectomy. This book had little or no information about the newer all-laproscopic option for hysterectomy surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile information
Two years ago, I did not read hysterectomy stories. Friends told me not to read "that stuff", since I was so strong, and mine would be a breeze.Much of medical literature even suggests that women who have problems post surgery are just "problem women."Read more

Dr. Pathak did a wonderful job of explaining the various aspects involved in Spasmodic Torticollis and its clinical course. 1-0 out of 5 stars Another gimmick to make money
If the doctor tells you the same thing in person as in the book, then I might think it was helpful, but since most doctors aren't honest when it comes to lasers, I know most of the facts in this book are not necessarily true and aren't what the doctor actually tells you in person.Lasers are very invasive procedures that can cause permanent damage.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I thought this books was great, however I did not like how it put down Carnie Wilson basically saying that she makes WLS look glamorous, obviously they have not read her books to see she dealt with the same problems & emotions that most WLS patients deal with.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor resource
I bought the book because I am considering weight loss surgery and am trying to educate myself about all aspects of the surgery. The author of this book reportedly had the surgery in 1999. For someone who had the experience, she is very negative and only gave negative view points and negative feed-back from people who had bad experiences. I know from talking to many people that this can be a very positive and life-saving adventure. I would not advise wasting money on this book. I have read six books so far, and they were all better than this one and much more upbeat and positive! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars There are much better books out there
I ordered this book along with "The Smart Woman's Guide to Plastic Surgery" and "Change your Looks, Change your Life" for patients in my office. These others were FAR SUPERIOR in every aspect-- depth of information, pros and cons, etc. While reading this book, I kept thinking that this read like a poorly researched high school term paper. Rather than clear, concise information, it had a lot of pointless "filler words" as well, causing me to wonder if their editor told them they had to beef it up from a two page outline in order to sell it as a book.I was very disappointed in this and highly recommend purchasing the others instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
I thought that I knew what the downsides of hysterectomy could be since so many of my friends have had to submit to one and I've done some reading here and there. But I learned a great deal more from this book. The title sounds a little alarmist, but the actual writeup is very thoughtful and well-supported information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a physician who is on a woman's side
Read this book before you agree to having a hysterectomy.I have had two doctors recommend that I undergo hysterectomy.I refuse.A woman's uterus is her vital female organ, and there is no reason to have it removed unless there is cancer present.Find a physician who is skilled at performing myomectomies, or consider embolization, but don't let them cut out your uterus.Dr. West gives clear, eye-opening information, and much detail to allow a woman to make an informed decision.Dr. West also gives important information about the after-effects of having a hysterectomy. This is one of the most important books that a woman will ever read. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Misleadingly Titled
A more accurate title for this book would be "The Spiritual Person's Guide to Coping With Heart Surgery and Bypassing Depression." Although it contains much good (but poorly organized) practical advice, it also contains many of the homilies held so dear by members of that group. Those who share similar beliefs will find it comforting, while others are likely to find it cloying.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to avoid depression after heart surgery.
I was fortunate to find a copy of this excellent book which prevented me from being depressed after my triple bypass surgery on August 5, 1999. Having read it, I was prepared for the outcome BEFORE the surgery. It waslike having the shop manual for an automobile in your hand. I wouldrecommend it to anyone who will have open heart surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ESSENTIAL FOR ANYONE ABOUT TO UNDERGO HEART SURGERY
I found this book after my mother underwent valve replacement surgery and was experiencing deep depression. If we had had this book BEFORE the experience we both think things would have gone a great deal better.I cannot recommend it highly enough; the book is very clear on the actual process of heart surgery as well as the aftermath and road to recovery.A beautiful treatment of the psychological issues raised by this experience for both the patient and his or her family. ...
