I didn't know anything
until I read this excellent book, I was lost and confused.This book covered everything I wanted to know about strokes.It was written clearly and plainly. Medical terms that were often used were explained simply.Though most of the information seems to be up to date, I wish there would be a newer edition available.

Good info, but written with a lot of technical jargon.
I had no previous experience with strokes.This book has a lot of info, but not as well written for a non-medical person as some of the other books available.Although the technical terms are accurate, I felt like I was back in college wading through professional jargon to get a grade, ratherthan simply finding answers to my questions. ... A must-read
I've not only had the pleasure of reading this book, but I've met it's author.She's the real thing.She absolutely shines.She walks a couple of feet off the ground.Ms. Newborn is not only a survivor, but a person who has happiness to share with others.Her book offers incredible insight to those who have either experienced a stroke or know someone who has.She gave me a clear understanding of aphasia and how strokes effect people.

A must read for stroke survivors!
I read quite a few books about strokes following my own, but only wanted to own two. This book, which was a gift from a dear friend, provided such inspiration during my recovery. I still read it from time to time becauseit continues to be a touchstone for me. I've always loved the poem"Ithaca" which is referenced in the title but it's taken on aspecial meaning since reading this book. Thank you for writing it, Barbara.

It gave good insight to whatmany stroke survivors face when they confronted with the disablity of not being able to communicate by speech.It's obvious that Dennis Tanner has a great degreeof empathy for stroke survivors and their care providers. The bookdescribes indetail what is transpiring physically with apraxia of speech.Speech is compared to a computer and its many funtions.As a strokesurvivor with severe Broca's apshasia and resulting apraxia I found thebook to be of great help as did my family. It was well written and answeredmany of the questions that my family and myself had. I would recommend itas a "must" for stroke survivors with communication disorders.

The author, a speech therapist, discusses in great detail the "big three" communication disorders caused by stroke:aphasia, apraxia and dysarthria as well as the ramifications of these disabilities for thepatient.Technical terms are explained in detail so that the non-medicalperson can understand them.The psychological aspects of language loss arediscussed in terms of the patient's anxiety, depression and acceptance ofunwanted change.Speech rehabilitation is covered and the book has typicalquestions and answers a reader might ask following the last chapter. Resources such as web sites, support groups, etc. are also included. Thebook may be overly detailed for some readers.
