5-0 out of 5 stars Ready To Tell It Again
I wrote this short story, as I am disable, but working. It's been 14 years since the accident, and my life changed forever.Without words to match the feelings, words are the tool's of thought's and believing that I can do it.

I wrote this book, as I am disable, but working. It's been 14 years since the accident, and my life changed forever

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially helpful and filled with new perspectives.
This is the first (and only, so far) book that gives the perspectives of everyone involved when someone has a debilitating stroke. It is a surprisingly well-organized collection of essays from individual doctors, medical prsonnel, caregivers --through to the stroke patient, himself. Perhaps the best essay is is saved for the end of the book.It is writtenby the editor, Dr. Wallace Sife.He explains the two sides to healing:medical and spiritual.Nobody had ever written about that, and it is soimportant that it be addressed.Dr. Sife has given enlightenment and hopeto his all his readers. This book is especially helpful for the strokepatient and his loved ones. They are scared, and need this kind ofpractical explanation, which is put into easily understandable, non-medicalterms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tiny book huge treasure
"The Case of Nora" is titled, or subtitled, in some languages "A Journey in the Jungle of the Brain". In fact, this book, modest in its dimensions, allows us to take a tiny little but invaluable journey into Feldenkrais' brain, so to say. For anyone interested in how this unusual man was thinking, it is a rare pearl among the Master's books. The text is so condensed that if you want to highlight key sentences you better get yourself a couple of markers, because you are going to highlight almost everything. Poor me, trying to review it: those of you who have read my other reviews of Moshe's books know that I try to reflect the uniqueness of each book mainly by quoting. Thus I hope my reader can get a substatial hint of what the book is about. But here - two thirds of the text are worthy of quotation in a review, so were to begin? Alas, I have already wasted too much space in this foreword... I hurry to the (Hebrew) text. The following will be almost as good as quoting (while translating), but of course I hope you will go to the origin. Moshe's own text is soooo beautiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learning - reformed!
The great educator, Professor Moshe Feldenkrais, describes his work in "An Adventure in the Jungle of the Brain" (Abenteuer im Dschungel des Gehirns) as this book is titled in German. And it is an adventure. A sixty year old business women wakes up one morning and cannot understand what has happend to her world. She discovers that she can neither read, get out of bed properly, cannot differenciate between her left and right slippers, bangs into the wall instead of passing through the bathroom door nor can she speak when she wants to express her irritation. Feldenkrais describes in detail all the steps he takes to discover how he can facilitate her brain to reajust and regenerate her capabilities to cope with the world again. He discribes his investigations, the mistakes and successes. This book is really a description on how we learn to learn and how we need to embrase our mistakes for only due to them we develope the facilities to learn. Gbor, Feldenkrais Movement Educator ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important self-help books on the market
Brain, Heal Thyself: A Caregiver's New Approach To Recovery From Stroke, Aneurysm, And Traumatic Brain Injuries is one of the most important self-help books on the market. The author's good friend experienced a near-fatal brain aneurysm and recovered: her title blends memoir and medical insights and will appeal to any caregiver who wants a blend of `how to' and biography.
5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning story of caring and committment
I was and still am stunned by the courage, love and committment shown in this story. I am looking forward to meeting Madonna Siles - soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Stop Reading! A Page Turner Through The End.
Anyone looking for inspiration dealing with a chronic illness or a brain injury...heck, anyone looking for just a darn good "read"... will find Siles' memoir of best friend Eve's aneurysm recovery fascinating and downright remarkable. Siles' direct, humorous, and brutally honest style draws the reader in from the first sentence. You'll find yourself nodding your head in agreement with her assessments of often contradictory medical thinking and cheering Eve on as she, under Siles' practical guidance, begins her remarkable recovery. If you doubt that belief in a higher power, a positive attitude, and dogged perserverance don't effect recovery, you're wrong. They're just as important as medical science and Siles and Eve prove it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable text
As a grad student, I'm often scrutinizing the prices and contents of my textbooks. This text approaches the occurrence of stroke from a rehabilitative standpoint. The etiology and functional sequelae are given as a requisite background, but the main focus is on treatment planning and intervention. The authors cite the latest literature in research regarding contemporary treatment approaches, as well as providing rationales for why older treatments may no longer be appropriate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXTRAORDINARY INSIGHT INTO BRAIN DAMAGE
The book Injured Brains of Medical Minds", compiled and edited by Narinder Kapur, gives an extraordinary insight into how brain damage affects the individual life. The book is very interesting and sometimeseven amusing to read. For instance, Karl Lashley, one of the outstandingneuropsychologists of this century, reports in a chapter that his ownmigraine attack brought about blind spots, elementary visual hallucinationsthat included scintillating scotoma. Bryan Kolb, a well-knownneuropsychologist and author of a standard textbook of neuropsychologydescribes in another self-report the consequences of his visual fielddefect due to a stroke as following: I still miss capital letters whenreading text ... and I am puzzled by the odd spellings or messages.Forexample a sign stating `women' can be misread as `men' or one saying`telephone' may be misread as `lephone'(...) I also decided to try skiingthat week. I was able to ski without difficulty, although I tended toovercompensate for my field defect and actually ran into a tree in my goodfield whilst trying to avoid a bush several meters away on the left!"In another book-chapter, Prof. Harold Klawans tells us about his colleague,a general surgeon, who suffered from an attack of transient global amnesiaduring a resection of a gallbladder. Again and again the surgeon asked thenurse: Did I take out the gallbladder?" In contrast to this severememory deficits he was able to continue in his work without any problems. But, by the time he successfully had finished the operation, he addedanother fundamental question: Where am I?". Lawrence Freedman, professor of medicine, suffered a cerebral concussion due to a bicycleaccident. He tells us about his anxiety to leave his home and go for asimple walk around the block with his little daughter. Halfway around theblock he tried to turn into the wrong direction. He was so absolutely sureto be right, that he bets a million dollar: He still owes this money to hisdaughter. Stories like this lead the reader to see not only the cognitivedeficits, but also the difficulties in activities of daily living and theemotional problems of patients after brain damage.Injured Brains ofMedical Minds" is not a simple case book. An introduction to eachsection of the book provides background information to the topic ofconcern. A commentary accompanying each of the personal accounts puts thepapers into the context of current theory and clinical practice, therebymaking Narinder Kapur's book a highly recommendable textbook introducingthe field of neuropsychology to specialists as well as to non-specialistreaders. It is important for everybody who would like to understand notonly the theory of a brain lesions but to get an additional touch of thefeeling" how it is to be a brain damaged patient. ... Read more
