5-0 out of 5 stars Readable with lots of good information
In response to a family emergency, I ordered four books on stoke recovery. Two had been recommended to me as being helpful for lay people: (1) "Living With Stroke: A Guide For Families" (Senelick, Rossi & Dougherty, 1999) and (2) "Stoke and the Family: A New Guide" (Stein, 2004). I ordered these for my family members (and myself). Two more were written at a much more scholarly, technical level for clinicans: (3) "Recovery after Stroke" (Barnes, Dobkin, & Bogousslavsky, Eds, 2005), and (4) "Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach" (Gillen & Burkhardt, Eds, 2004).
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
My aunt became partially incapacitated by a stroke at the age of 55, and I took on the responsibility of assisting her in her day-to-day activities.I bought a number of books on stroke, but found this one to be by far the most comprehensive and sensitively written on the subject.Dr. Stein's book describes the wide range of severity that strokes can take and offers in-depth guidance on how best to adapt to life after stroke.I especially appreciated that the author explained the medical implications of stroke in layperson's terms that I could understand without a scientific background. If you buy one book on this subject, let this be the one -- I recommend this book without reservation to anyone whose family has been touched by stroke. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 300 Great Tips from a Stroke Survivor
"After a Stroke: 300 Tips for Making Life Easier" is just what the title suggests. Cleo Hutton,a 12 year stroke survivor, shares what she has learned during the course of her own stroke recovery. This is not a book written by someone looking from the outside, but rather contains learnings from the inside, from the perspective of a stroke survivor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for ladies only?
OK, I'm humble enough to admit I was wrong. When one of my best friends, a Volvo-driving soccer mom if there ever was one, suggested that I read and PURCHASE "Into The Blue", I was skeptical at best. Scenario: author and sister rehabilitate stroke-afflicted father so he can - *gag* - fly again. Yet another "chick" book. Ho-hum.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story
This book is the fascinating story of two sisters and their dad who was suffering froma stroke. The sisters are determined to get him back to his airplane. In this book the author underlines the support a patient needs from his doctor for a fast and safe recovery. This book will definitely be a welcome read to any one suffered from a stroke.
4-0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating Read!
I loved this book! The writing was so sharp and funny, and the story is heartwarming and hilarious, without being overly sentimental.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is amazing. It addresses more than just hypertension. It looks at the way blood pressure links up with diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and even the selective information (and disinformation) we receive from the corporate and medical establishment about this condition. As someone who works with stroke patients every single day, I can tell you the tragedy is real. Not allowing this simple, common sense message to be more widely disseminated is flat out unethical. This book does disseminate it.It is a light shining in the wilderness!
5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous!!!
I have been on blood pressure medication for over 15 years. I was first diagnosed with high BP when I was 24. I tried most of the BP medications and hated all of them. I had significant fatigue and lethargy with all of them. I read this book and took the recommendations with respect to a high potassium diet (high K factor). To make a long story short, I have been able to reduce the medication by 2/3. Realize that switching to this diet is not easy. But for me it was, as anything I felt would be better than continuing to take the toxic BP medication. I anticipate that I will be able to completely get off of them soon. ... Read more

Editorial Review

On July 28, 1995, Robert McCrum suffered a severe stroke at the age of 42. His thoughtful memoir chronicles the long, arduous process of recovery. Drawing on his own diaries and those of his wife, Sarah Lyall (then the publishing columnist for the Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Year of Recovery
This book was not quite up to my expectations. It was interesting but I felt the writer wasn't being totally honest about his rate of recovery since it conflicted heavily with his wife's view.I actually liked his wifes diaries, they were very helpful in what the actual recovery process was.I wouldn't highly recommend paying the money for this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Everything Is Relative
Very insightful book.Referring to the past reviewer who dismissed this book because Mr. McCrum's stroke was not catastrophic enough, I am very sorry to hear of your loved one's difficulties. However this book could be helpful to many who suffer lesser degrees of stroke and eventually recover fairly well.I can understand this book would not be useful to you personally in light of your experiences.I can say though without a doubt, as a stroke survivor, that even a mild stroke is something no person would EVER want to experience. It often strikes like a lightning bolt and even if function is eventually regained it is hard for a person to ever get over being completely paralyzed and helpless even for a short period of time.Books like Mr. McCrum's help the world at large start to realize stroke can affect anyone, even the young.Best wishes and good health to all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful if you need info on serious strokes
This was one of a mountain of books I poured over following my father's severe intracerebral hemorragic stroke, which has left him quite disabled both physically and mentally. For persons, such as myself, searching for answers and insight on how to cope with the seriously disabling stroke of a loved one, this is not the right book.Mr. McCrum never lost consciousness, his mental faculties remained intact (indeed, he was keeping a copious and cogent log of his observations from the first days after the stroke), and his physical disabilities were relatively minor (a slowed gait, and weakness on right side).Frankly, the book had a slightly narcissistic tenor, McCrum using every opportunity to name-drop (constantly referring to his many notable visitors), recount his adventures abroad, and demonstrate his command of arcane literature, which he quotes constantly. He discusses how his stroke caused him to rethink his career choices, and feel more committed to his marriage.McCrum's existential crisis, which culminated in his decision to leave his editorial post to become a journalist, left me cold.I think of the thousands of stroke sufferers who cannot put two sentences together, much less write a book. In the end, McCrum's account is less about the consequences of his stroke, and more about the early mid-life crisis it provoked.Mrs. McCrum, on the other hand, wrote extremely candidly and touchingly of her fears and struggles throughout her new husband's recovery. Her passages provide a very real, honest glimpse into the turmoil suffered by the family members of stroke victims, who are often vexed by feelings of helplessness, fear, isolation and sorrow. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Clear Explanation of Brain Functions, by fermed
"The Shattered Mind" was first published in 1975, and its usefulness has not diminished in the quarter century since then. Yes, there have been dramatic changes in the neurological sciences since that time, but because the book deals with the "basics," it is still as relevant and useful as when it was first published. Howard Gardner's tone is uniformly optimistic and up-beat without being saccharine, something that is probably greatly appreciated by those suffering a sudden brain injury and by their relatives. The book allows them to acquire useful factual information and it also encourages them to develop the more rare and desirable qualities of hope and optimism when facing their difficult times.4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a complete picture of the unknowable.
Amnesia is the loss of memory, something that happenes to many with brain injury. What medicine does not understand is why the brain does what it does, what motives it.Gardner has put into words what many have tried butnever done successfully: describe and relate the indescribeable andunrelateable.I was amnesic for over 16 years; recovery showed me about"self", identity, and reasons for our actions and thoughts. Gardner has expressed what I learned without having to have been amnesic. A must for anyone who wants to learn about personality, what it is, whatimpairments can do to one's personality. ...
