Editorial Review

We've all got our idiosyncrasies when it comes to writing--a special chair we have to sit in, a certain kind of yellow paper we absolutely must use. To create this tremendously affecting memoir, Jean-Dominique Bauby used the only tool available to him--his left eye--with which he blinked out its short chapters, letter by letter. Two years ago, Bauby, then the 43-year-old editor-in-chief of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book close to my heart
The book has been the best book I have ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Where does one get the strenght to carry on?
A marvelous book in which a man tells his personal experiences and thoughts in dealing with a stroke that left him completely paralysed, speechless and able only to move one eyelid. It is amazing that he found a way to tell his story and it will show the reader what a slender thread it is by which we all cling on to life. It is a wonderful moving read and will surely leave one with much to think about. I also read many of the very personal reviews that customers have written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably beautiful
With every page, every sentence, every word....every letter....I try to put myself in Bauby's stiff-backed wheelchair and imagine the pain (physical, mental, spiritual and emotional) he was going through at the time. And you know what? I probably didn't even scratch the surface.

5-0 out of 5 stars The final Armada!
As a professional neuroradiologist, I recommend this book to all radiologists, neurologists and neurosurgeons who wish to choose just one book in the field of cerebral angiography. In this era of MRA and CTA, thisbook can give readers not too much, not too little knowledge about normalanatomy and pathological findings. Figures were clearly drawn and clinicalDSA images were carefully chosen. Maybe those who wish to becomeprofessional neurointerventionists prefer those historical books edited byDr. Newton, but I suppose even such people would love this book and read itdaily. ... Having recently had a loved one who has suffered a devastating stroke, this book was so helpful in every aspect of what to expect on this very long journey to recovery. It was easy to read and to understand and I would highly recommend it to any family or caregiver who is going through this process with a loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Read on a Tragic Situation
This book explicitly carries the message that no matter how sick you are, your care and recovery is in your hands as much as in the hands of your doctors. Especially in a case like that of the authors, her doctors were just guessing. Consistent with this are hints of what you should do to be prepared for a doctor visit, i.e. a list of the medications you take.
4-0 out of 5 stars Surprised More Haven't Reviewed This Incredible Story
After I had read Julia's incredible story of survival, bravery, humility and humor, I had the pleasure of meeting her at a reading. And I can say from personal experience, her spirit, her incredible courage and her dedication to her mission shines through her writing. The voice you hear when she speaks is the voice you hear in her book. If you have the chance to meet her at a reading, GO!
5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring and eye-opening memoir
Reading Don't Leave Me This Way, I found myself filled with emotion and thinking about the many ways and the many people who could benefit from reading Julia Fox Garrison's amazing story. It's inspiring, instructive, humorous and moving all at the same time. But it's also an eye-opening and pragmatic description of what women in particular are faced with following a stroke--things that most of us would never consider. The author has captured the nuances and the emotional complexity of her ongoing encounters as a patient with the steady parade of healthcare professionals all so well and in a way to which many readers can relate. I am amazed at how she was able to remember everything in such specific detail. The story is very engrossing filled with humor and sensitivity. This book stands as a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of humor over adversity, and serves as an instructive tale to those in healthcare policy and practice who work with all patients, whatever their age, sex, condition, or needs.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Brain, Brain Injuries, and Brain Functioning
This book is actually a collaboration between a famed psychologist and a Russian socldier who experienced a devastating head wound in battle in 1943.The soldier in vivid detail expresses how the head injury haspermanently affected his life as well as how he processes perceptualinformation and communicates with the world.Very easy to read, I wasclearly struck by the heroic measures made by the soldier to enlightenLuria and other readers on how his functioning was irrevocably altered byhis brain injury. Normally complicated discussions on the brain arerendered easily understood in this book.I highly recommend this foranyone who works in the mental health field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An extensive scientific monography written with style
I've been doing some shamefully overdue reading lately and the reason of this review is to let others know about the delight I experienced in reading George Somjen's book on ions. I have no reserve in saying that the author is, at least for me, the most accomplished writer of the neuroscientific community. And this is why: stylishly speaking I read this book as if it was a thriller, I couldn't let it out of the hand before the end, and then I was sorry that it was over. Secondly, I rarely witnessed so much fairplay with respect to others' work and so much modesty towards its own. This comes accompanied by an encyclopedic culture of the literature that makes Somjen's writings true handbooks and even more so for poorly cultivated young scientists who think that neuroscience started when they opened their eyes. I like very much the balance between concepts known to create controversy nowadays, but this is far from emerging from Somjen's writing. And finally this book made me happy because I had the feeling of learning without effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Educate yourself about stroke quickly
Make sure to get the newer (2001) version of this text.Amazon will be more than happy to send you a "new" earlier edition (1999) if you aren't careful.Unfortunately, the 1999 cover of "Living with Stroke" is of very low contrast, and thus difficult to read. So, older folks or people with low vision may be a bit put off by the cover.(But don't let this scare you away. The text within is large and readable.)The newer version may very well contain more up-to-date info.
5-0 out of 5 stars great resource!
this book has been fantastic for helping families and other caregivers of individuals who have suffered a stroke!this book hadn't been written back when my own father suffered his strokes.i really wish that it had been - it would have been of immense help to my own family.now, i am fortunate to be able to recommend it and lend it to families, who all find it to be well written, easy to read and understand, and full of helpful and practical advice in dealing with our loved one, protecting them, and helping us to communicate more clearly and cope more effectively.an excellent contribution to the field!

5-0 out of 5 stars Start with this book - it should be in every ER waiting room
Recently, my 31 year old, pregnant sister had an emergency c-section and then had complications that resulted in her suffering TWO strokes. Doctors would not tell us anything, no one could even tell us what they thought would happen with her. Luckily I found this book. This is a primer for strokes -- it gives everything from a lesson on how the brain works to how a rehabilitation program is put together, to how to cope emotionally as a caregiver. It is a quick read, chock full of substantial information, clear and well-written. You don't have to read straight through: it is well indexed and has a clear table of contents so you can get to the information you need most quickly. The most valuable part of the book is the glossary of terms that helps you navigate the medical-speak you are going to hear. Start with this book and you'll be equipped with solid information and understanding. This book was a godsend in a time of crisis. ... Read more
