5-0 out of 5 stars Living Day to Day with Lung Disease
I bought the book "Breathe Better, Live in Wellness" a couple of years ago having heard about it from the COPD caregivers listserv. My husband who had COPD and just passed away last October, 2004, and I read the book from cover to cover. It gave us hope that we would be able to deal with this disease. Jane Martin is a wonderful storyteller both in the book and in her presentations. I would highly recommend this book to anyone coping with lung disease as well as their family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living a fulfilling life with breathing problems.
Breathe Better, Live in Wellness: Winning Your Battle Over Shortness of Breath, by Jane M. Martin is the second edition of her first edition, formerly titled Inspirations: Stories of Breathing Better and Living Well. Breathe Better has been restructured, having a section for each of several lung disorders and life issues, making this book more reader friendly. Jane has also added "billboard" like boxes with definitions, hints, and links corresponding with each specific subject matter. This helps readers quickly find resources so they can research the topics of greatest concern to them.Read more

Everything anasthmatic should know is included in this book, from nutrition, exercise, stress, inhalers, types of medication available, including breathingtechniques, choosing the right doctor and there is a section dealing withchildren and asthma. The writing style is great as the author is actuallyspeaking to the reader. Having grown up with asthma, I encourage familieswith asthmatic patients to get a copy of this book. It really is a musthave for all asthmatics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Up-to-date, but still the best
The best analysis of the common cold, its treatment, and related ailments ever to hit book shelves. It neither dimisses nor raises up, and thus does not take for granted, any aspect of this confounding illness. And yet, in doing so, it provides the clearest picture regarding infection, transmission, and treatment.Every element of discussion is loaded with analysis of scientific studies and balanced with humor and common sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing common sense for a governmental publication
This book provides a good baseline start for controlling environmental allergies for parents with highly allergic or asthmatic children. Of course, the parents themselves can also benefit by following the procedures indicated in the book. Two things that I did not find in the book were: a comprehensive plan for dealing with food allergies/food sensivities, and also what nutritional supplements people with allergies/asthma should be taking. Vitamin C should be taken by all people who have allergies and/or asthma, because high doses of Vitamin C block mast cell degranulation, which inhibits histamine release (thus Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine). Also, Vitamin C has bronchodilator effects. For more information about Vitamin C's myriad functions, read the book The Failures of American Medicine. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining , informative but still lacking
The title says "a medically proven program to cure...". After reading this book, I did not learn about the medically proven program. The author says the purpose of the book is to get relief from snoring. Page 16:"Researchers and clinicians have finally isolated the underlying causes of snoring and are now discovering a variety of realistic treatments for it. These can bring gratifying results to both snorers and snorees." My question is: what are these treatments? I did not read anything new: lose weight, take drugs, get an appliance, have surgery but we all know that these treatments have low success rates. The author did educate the reader on some of the original anti- snoring devices, showing many pictures with descriptions. He also addressed children who snore and the problems this can cause. Parents and pediatricians need to be educated about snoring and children. There is a great description and explanation for snoring and sleep apnea. However, just like so many of the other books available on snoring that say they have "the" treatment, there was nothing new here.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sand Man Cometh.
Even though this book is getting to be a bit old there is quite a bit of helpful and interesting stuff within it's covers. The author writes with a sense of humour, so it is quite a pleasant read.Read more
