5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book was very helpful in my understanding of childhood asthma. I know this is an increasing problem in the last few years, and this is a great resource.I especially liked the section on asthma myths - so many of those have been spread around causing misinformation and misunderstanding. I would highly recommend this to parents of children with asthma, and for healthcare professionals that care for these children. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
As a parent of a child with asthma, it can be very confusing to understand all the different medications my child takes, and the different tests that she has had. This book helps to make all that clear. I would strongly recommend it for any parents of children with asthma. I feel that I can trust the information from this reputable source.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great!
I loved it. As a pediatric pulmonologist, I found this book very helpful for my discussions with families.Chapter 4, "Medicines: The Right Way" was particularly outstanding. I recommend this book to all my patients. Asthma is an incredibly common problem in children and there have not been good resources to distribute or recommend. Thank you! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Stuffed head and sore throat, dripping nose and a chest-searing cough--these are the common miseries of millions. The physical torments are no secret, the problem is what to do about them. Ivker describes and evaluates the standard remedies currently available through pharmacy and prescription, and that in itself is a great boon. But he continues with a holistic approach, detailing how to change your environment, diet, and lifestyle to promote health and minimize the hazards that lead to sick sinuses, allowing a ray of hope to shine though all the mucus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with a deceptive title
This book should have been called "Sinus Survival, among other essential information about general health and wellbeing" because although the first half of the book is about sinuses, the second half of the book covers things like candida, and mental, emotional and spiritual health - which can all affect your sinuses and your health in general - and a guide to alternative medicine. This book is loaded with useful information (342 pages of it).

5-0 out of 5 stars there is hope!
This book has given me hope for a better quality of life.I am not able to try all the herbs because I am nursing but the yeast diet has changed my overall health.I don't recommend doing everything he says in the diet or you won't eat much but just cutting out sugar and bad carbohydrates I have been healthy and my last cold didn't turn into the usual nightmare sinus infection I always get!Now my brother is reading my book and I recommend to friends suffering with sinus problems. Exercising is possible for me now and is keeping me healthier. The fatigue is getting better now too.I think if you can do the herbs you will have even better results than me.This book has really helped me!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brathing Disorder Source book by Adams
Just as other reviewers had said, this is a great fundamental guide understanding breathing disorders. I got my brother-in-law a copy so he could read it as well to try and figure out what is wrong with him. His doctors can't tell him why he has disabling shortness of breath after crossing the room. We are going to create our own theory and present it to his doctors to comment on and this book is all we needed to draft that theory. The book gives hope and that is what I need right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Guide to Breathing Disorders and Treatment
The Breathing Disorders Sourcebook is "the guide" on the breathing process and the disorders that are associated with it.Diseases of the air passaages reviewed include, Rhinitis, Nasal Polps, Sleep Apnea, Asthma, Chronir Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Brochiectas, CysticFibrosis, and Lung Cancer. The book also covers diseases of the air sacsand pulmonary vessels. The introductory chapter has a good primer on howthe respiratory process works and is integrated with the rest of the body. Another chapter is devoted to medical evaluation and treatment, signs andsymptoms of breathing disorders. The text is succinct and direct, withfigures and illustrations to help the reader. At times, the book can betechnical for the lay reader, but the book includes a useful glossary forterms that are unfamiliar.Perhaps the best value of this book is theabundance of resource material in the Appendix. There are listings of howto get information by phone, contact referral centers, pulmonary rehabcenters, national organizations, newsletters, books and pamphlets, allergyand repiratory supplies, and of course, my favorite, a guide to the bestweb sites on breathing disorders. If you have a breathing disorder, thisbook definately should be read and will serve well as a future reference. The author brings a lot of experience to his book and it is clear he knowswhat he is talking about.A small investment for such an tremendous amountof information and advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone with a breathing problem.
How do we breathe.Dr. Adams' dandy book lets us count the ways of how we breathe, what can go wrong and what can be done to help us breathe easier.I found the Breathing Disorders Sourcebook a great read with so muchinformation that will allow you to improve your breathing and in many casesavoid lung disease by lifestyle changes.I recommended this book to anyonethat has a lung disorder or wants to prevent getting a lung disorder. ... Editorial Review

Of all the body's unconscious functions--those that occur whether we think about them or not--breathing is the one we're most aware of, the one we feel we have the most control over. That's why asthma, which makes breathing increasingly difficult by trapping air in the lungs, is one of the most terrifying diseases. And it's increasingly deadly, claiming more than 5,000 lives a year. Irwin Polk believes that the rise in deaths comes, in part, from an overuse of drugs to manage the disease and an underuse of breathing exercises to help release trapped air. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No exercises - read Asthma Free naturally for them
I was a chronic asthmatic and the principles enshrined in this book are excellent. The only way that I solved my asthma was to address my overbreathing. This books tells you just that. One downside is that it does not contain the exercises. I have came across two books which do. These are asthma free naturally and Close Your mouth. They are little gems and contain all the information that you need to know. In fact Asthma free is the best book that I have ever read for asthma. It offers a solice of hope and has helped my quality of life improve significantly
3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't exsplain how to do the excercises
This Book is a good supplement for information on Buteyko, but you will not learn how to do the breathing excercises from this book.I downloaded the James Hooper manual from here http://www.nqnet.com/catalog/paypal.html and after practicing Buteyko for a month, I am asthma free. I even scored 100% lung function on my test yesterday. It was only 60% three months ago. My doctor was amazed and even asked me to give him more information on Buteyko. It really does work, but you won't get the basics on how to preform the excercises from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another breakthrough exposing the medical establishment
This book was very helpful in eliminating my exercise induced asthma. The principles and theory are very valid. I have been suffering from insomnia and mild asthma for many years and I do not like to take drugs if I can avoid it. I was also diagnosed as having sleep apnea and treated for that condition though without lasting results. This book shows why asthma develops in people and how you can control it and then cure it without any drugs. The only reason I gave the book four stars was the fact that this book does not spell out the actual 5-day treatment so I went and bought the book 'Breathing Free' by Teresa Hale. With the help of that book, I could administer the treatment to myself at home and saw some remarkable improvements in my sleep and a complete disappearance of my wheezing during running!! I also lost some weight! I highly recommend both books. I am actually consulting with the the author for a fee to continue my application of the treatment program for maximum and long-lasting results. I start to wonder why our medical establishment seem to prefer expensive drug therapies for everything when there are so many simple and non-invasive treatments out there. Could the drug companies be involved in this attitude ? I wonder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books ever written
Vitamin C is so important for health that the vast majority of animals manufacture it daily in their bodies. This is why animals can live outdoors even in the winter without getting colds or most other illnesses. Being healthy is important to animals because if an animal gets sick it usually becomes eaten by a healthy animal. Only a few animals -- principally humanes, monkeys, and apes -- cannot manufacture vitamin C. The inability to manufacture vitamin C confines monkeys and apes to live in or near the tropics, where the weather is warm and edible fruits and vegetation is very rich in vitamin C and thus can supply their need for this essential nutrient. Outside the tropics they would get sick and die or be killed. When monkeys and apes are removed from the tropics to live in zoos or as pets, they are routinely fed a diet very rich in vitamin C in order to keep them healthy.
1-0 out of 5 stars No good
This book is insightful but is not very well organized.Pauling jumps around from thought to thought in almost every chapter. The information is not outdated, but too many of his references are.So much so that it makes it unenjoyable to read.I wouldn't advise anyone purchase this book, here in the year 2000. I would go for one of his later books.

1-0 out of 5 stars No substantial information
This book is basically a pamphlet for the Buteyko method and those that teach it.It briefly describes the Buteyko theory behind asthma,a bunch of testimonials, a history of Dr. Buteyko and the practice of his technique, and the goals of the technique. This information is freely available in equal or greater depth on the internet.I don't find testimonials to be terribly convincing. This book does not teach one how to do the Buteyko technique, claiming that it must be done under the close supervision of a properly trained person. As such, this book is worthless. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not a book about asthma as a physical ailment
I loved Desalvo's Crazy in the Kitchen and was very eager to read this book, as both my sons have asthma. However, I found this read extremely irritating.Of course, one can only write from one's own perspective, but Desalvo's perspective on asthma is so very different than that of so many asthma sufferers, young children. She seems overly involved in her own illness, and fascinated by her own symptoms, which do not seem terribly severe to me.Mainly, however, I was annoyed by her view of asthma as a illness caused by emotional trauma---a view that has long been discredited.Certainly it's a more interesting topic to write about than it would be to attribute asthma to traditional medical causes, and it allows her to explore asthma in literature, but it also reminds me of those bashing "refrigerator mothers" for autism.I think her asthma could be quite easily explained in part by living near NYC and driving through polluted air each day, and working in a closed building near smokers.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have allergies, you need this book!
I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!
