2-0 out of 5 stars Asthmatics- this is not the solution
I read Richard Firsheins book with much interest. Yes, it is well written and contains factual information but I found my asthma was as bad after reading it as it was before. The book did little to improve my condition - it did not reverse it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wrong theory?
Although I greatly admire Dr. Firschein for his initiative, my experience with asthma has taught me to be skeptical of the theory of correcting breathing presented in the book.If you consider how a normal person takes a natural deep breath you will see that the chest is vigorously expanded and the upper abdomen is drawn in and upward (Gray's Anatomy). It therefore seems highly arguable that an asthmatic simply "gets stuck" in his frantic effort to take a deep inspiration, and that the upward straining of the shoulders so typical of an attack is not pathological and the deep breath should be taught by correctly learning from a healthy breather in all details. Also, a healthybreather tends to restrict the inflow of air during the deep inspiration with his lips and/teeth.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a BLESSING!!!
This is a tremedous book for anyone that thinks they might have asthma or if they actually have been diagnosed with asthma. My 22 month old was recently diagnosed with asthma and even though I'm a college graduate I was having some trouble making sense of all the medications and reading the signs when he was having trouble since he's too young for a peak flow meter. This book covers it all in great deal and teaches you how to really manage your asthma whether you can use a peak flow meter or not. A wonderful book and worth far more than the list price. The author is actually an asthma specialist and indicated you can get the information in this book from your doctor, but it would take 10 hours. It would be difficult for you to remember and you would probably not want to pay for it! I think that is a good description of this book! It goes along exactly with what my doctor has been saying, only presents it in an organized manner along with some forms in the back to keep a daily diary and treatment plan. EXCELLENT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for asthmatics
I have read a number of books and articles on asthma. This is by far the most comprehensive, up to date and it is easy to understand, too. I checked a copy from my library but it is so good that I am going to purchase it for my personal reference library as well as my child's school nurse. This book even has short section explaining cough-variant asthma, which is what both me and my son have...this is a little known type of asthma which in my case was mis-diagnosed for 35 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
Read Plaut's book shortly after my oldest son had his first asthma attackwhich nearly resulted in respiratory failure.Plaut's book is by far mybest single source for useful information about causes, prevention andtreatment.I consult it regularly and highly recommend it for anyone withor concerned about asthma. It was a lifesaver in my family!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reporting and Story Telling
Mr. Greenfeld has written an immensely readable, honest, and intelligent history of epidemics past and possible future. If you are concerned about avian influenza and the future threat of a pandemic, read this book. Even if you aren't, read it anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Important than Hot Zone
Greenfeld has given us a medical thriller somewhat along the lines of Preston's The Hot Zone, but I find this is better than the Hot Zone because, in its more thoughtful pacing, it is better written and is much more informed about the native culture from which the bug emanates. Greenfeld spent a lot of time on the ground in China during the emergence of the viral illness known as SARS, sitting not in Beijing hotel rooms but mucking through the backstreets of crowded, stinking Guangzhou, and he brings all of this to the page in an unforgettable and somehow life-affirming portrait of humanity, painting streets as both a gory slaughterhouse and redoubt of animist superstition as well as the cutting-edge of epidemiological science that would affect the rest of the world. This is absolutely essential; rather than view China or Africa or any of the world's viral incubators as menacing, unknowable breeding grounds, this books makes it clear that the globalization of illnesses requires we understand global culture as our culture, and their consequences as our consequences. Thankfully, the latest avian flu scare has subsided somewhat, and other matters like war in the Middle East have grabbed the front pages; but when the next globalized epidemic emerges, I suspect Greenfeld's book will become something of a road map, if not a bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars True to life - pretty much
Having been involved in the SARS epidemic laboratory testing working group at CDC in Atlanta I was very interested in the way this book tells the tale of how it all came about. These things start with rumors, samples come in, testing is done and the results reported. So much for the lab work. Then the medical journals report the epidemiology - nice if you are an epidemilogist, but dry otherwise. We very rarely get a richly detailed account of the whole story. Mr. Greenfield does that here and does a great service in that he shows the real world of infectious disease - which most people don't want to think about. The descriptions are excellent (I will never approach a "wild flavor" restaurant as long as I live!).The tension is kept throughout the book, much as the tension in the lab when the outbreak is happening - round the clock lab work, constant talks with collegues around the world, competition to see who can get it first. It's all there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful General Information
My mother is newly diagnosed with asthma, at age 68. Getting this diagnosis been a confusing process that hasn't been very well explained by her doctor. This book is full of good, medically based general information. I would recommend it for someone who needs an introduction to the subject that is fairly detailed but easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, and biased....
This book is probably important for all of us to have in our library, since it's very complete and comprehensive in explaining what asthma is and what kinds of treatments are available - although a book like this goes out of date the second it is printed. There are already a number of new things available for asthmatics that have come since the last edition. If you are in the care of a doctor, you will ask much more informed questions - and understand the drugs you are on - after reading this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a great help .
This book was very helpful to me in being an informed health care consumer for my child. I especially found the detailed medication section helpful. My son's asthma had progressed from being mild to moderate and the thorough review of current medication options was very helpful. I purchased the book basedon the fact that a pulmonary nurse clinician had recommended it. I am a nurse practicioner in women's health and value the recommendation from another practicioner who is involved in educating her patients regarding their conditon. This book really helped me in making informed decisions along with my son's pediatrician. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Guide You to Your Pediatricians Waiting Room
Just because mainstream pediatricians can't cure allergies or asthma does not mean that they are incurable.Nowhere in this book is any understanding about why people get allergies and asthma in the first place, aside from a genetic tendency. What brings out this tendency in your child?Apparently, the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't know. This book is dedicated to keeping allergy medicine in the dark ages of throwing drugs at the symptoms without much attempt to understand their cause.Environmental approaches to allergy and asthma are almost entirely ignored, or contradicted in another part of the book.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative

3-0 out of 5 stars good but missing some essentials
This book has a great format with interesting case studies involving a number of respiratory conditions, however if you are looking for a thorough examination of respiratory disease, this is not where you will find it. It is completely lacking case studies involving Pulmonary Embolism and Pulmonary Hypertension-- two topics you probably don't want to miss.Overall, a good introductory text with clinical applications and a "big picture" approach to respiratory disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear explanations of disease processes
I am a Respiratory Therapy student and I have found this book very helpful. Each chapter presents a specific disease and starts with a full description of that disease process which is then followed by a case study. The reader is provided with information about the "patient" andis then asked questions. There are answers to those questions immediatelyfollowing. This book has really helped me to understand several diseasesand I would recommend it for any respiratory pathophysiology class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, Genius Author!!!!!!
I love this book!!!!!It is extremely informative and has helped our family's health problems immensely.I love the Oregano products recommended in this book. They WORK!!!!My child's asthma has completely disappeared, and my chronic sinus infections are gone. No more antibiotics every few weeks for me because of sinus infections.I can't tell you how relieved I am as a mother, to no longer have to worry about my child having a full blown asthma attack and needing nebulizer treatments every few hours every time he has a cold. Dr. Ingram is a hero to our family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thankful for Dr. Cass Ingram
Having just read the review of July 8, 2005 relating to a press release from 2003, it boosts my trust of Dr. Ingram's very informative books. The American Medical Association would like to see Dr. Ingram and many others like him "go away".We're sort of at the crossroads right now where our liberty to buy natural products (such as Oil of Oregano and Oregacyn, etc.) could be taken away, and we would need a prescription to purchase such items.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book.
If you suffer from sinus problems, such as myself, this is a great book to read. I have used one of the products, Oregacyn that Dr. Ingram recommends for sinusitis. It has helped greatly reduce the number of sinus infections that I have and has helped clear ones that start. I have allergies to pollen, trees, dust, etc. and this is the only supplement that I have ever taken that clears my sinus problems, so that I do not have to take antibiotics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally A Balanced View
Dr. Marc Siegel's book delivers what has been sorely missing in the discussion of bird flu--a balanced, reasonable, and objective view of this possible threat to our health. Dr. Siegel carefully explains that calls for alarm are not appropriate based on current scientific knowledge and only serve to raise the fear level. At the same time he outlines steps such as upgrading vaccine manufacture and government responsiveness in case a real threat materializes. His basic advice which is to eat smart, exercise, and reduce anxiety, will likely help all of us to live longer. This highly readable and informative book is really "everything you need to know" about this subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Insights!
Siegel believes that it is not likely that the bird flu will mutate to human form, and that even if it does, it will be less lethal than currently. In addition, generally unreported evidence from Hong Kong (about 16% of those tested had antibodies to the H5N1 virus) indicates it is less virulent than believed.
5-0 out of 5 stars A sensible look into the hype, the facts, and the fears of Bird Flu
The spread of a lethal strain of bird flu in the past two years has sparked fears of a new pandemic. In Bird Flu, Dr. Marc Siegel looks through the facts, the fears, and the realities to explain what has the experts so worried and why there's still plenty of reason to be calm.Regardless of whether a bird flu outbreak will occur this year in the United States, there's still plenty of work to be done in preparing America for outbreaks of any kind. ...
